Warner Bros. Discovery kept up with TV upfronts week’s biggest trend at their presentation out of The Theater at Madison Square Garden Tuesday: Promoting not just its TV slate as a prime ad-buying opportunity — but also its film franchises.
First up from CEO David Zaslav’s team, WB Discovery revenue and strategy chief Bruce Campbell addressed the Madison Avenue crowd following a sizzle featuring top Wbd IP and brands across film and TV series. Then Mindy Kaling took the stage to promote her Max comedy “The Sex Lives of College Girls” before introducing HBO and Max chairman and CEO Casey Bloys.
“I know when you look at me, you see a young, beautiful mother,” Kaling said. “The truth is I am an old Max veteran. I was here way back when Max was HBO Max, it was this whole other thing. It was just me, ‘Tom & Jerry’ reruns...

Back in November, Mark Hamill told fans at Fan Expo San Francisco that he would no longer be portraying the Clown Prince of Gotham.
Despite being considered by many to be the best Joker of all time, Hamill believed he just couldn't play the role unless it was opposite Kevin Conroy's Batman. Conroy, who voiced Bruce Wayne/Batman across several projects, passed away in November 2022.
But it seems there was a little caveat that allowed for Hamill to reprise the iconic villain role one final time in an upcoming game called MultiVersus. As it turns out, prior to his passing, Kevin Conroy also voiced Batman in the fighting game. It's perhaps for this reason that Hamill made an exception to his previous statement and returned to the role of Joker in the game.
For those unfamiliar, MultiVersus is a free-to-play platform fighter, in the same vein as Nintendo's Super Smash Bros.

After accidentally revealing the news to a handful of trade publications on earlier this week, Weigel Broadcasting and Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) formally announced the forthcoming launch of their classic cartoon television network MeTV Toons on Thursday.
The channel will debut in June on broadcast stations across the country and on free, ad-supported streaming television platforms, and will include dozens of classic animated series like “Tom & Jerry,” “The Flintstones,” “Johnny Quest” and “Scooby-Doo.”
MeTV Toons builds off a Saturday morning cartoon block that has aired on Weigel-owned MeTV for several years now, which consisted primarily of animated shows from Warner Bros. MeTV Toons will expand on this idea by incorporating other Warner Bros series into the mix, along with shows from Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony’s Columbia Pictures and others.

Itchy and Scratchy are responsible for some of the most memorable episodes of "The Simpsons." Every fan will fondly remember "The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show" or Marge's crusade against the ultra-violent kids' cartoon in "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge." Indeed, "The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show" landed at number five on /Film's ranking of the best episodes of "The Simpsons," with "Itchy and Scratchy Land" coming in at number 15.
Clearly, then, "Itchy and Scratchy" was more than a parody of "Tom & Jerry"-style cartoons. Though the central joke was as simple as "What if Tom & Jerry was super violent," the show-within-a-show was often used as a way to extend the cultural satire that was so integral to "The Simpsons." Plus, as legendary writer John Schwartzwelder once told The New Yorker, it allowed the writers a break from the rules of the show overall:

Exclusive: Netflix’s new feature Boss Dan Lin has tapped former DreamWorks Animation and Coyote Vs. Acme producer Chris deFaria to consult for the streamer’s animation department, we hear on very good authority.
Lin and deFaria worked together on the mega success of The Lego Movie when the duo were at Warners. Essentially, what is being sorted at Netflix is how to eventize their animation movies more. The streamer, together with Annapurna, saved the Blue Sky axed Disney LGBTQ+ movie Nimona, a casualty of the Disney-Fox merger; the pic wound up getting an Oscar nomination for Animated Feature.
Animation reports into Lin. Karen Toliver serves as VP of Animated Film.
At Warners deFaria worked as the president of Animation and Innovative Technology. He held that position for four years between 2013 and 2017, which included co-oversight of the studio’s Warner Animation Group. While at Warners, deFaria’s credits included Man of Steel,...

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened an investigation into the accident on the set of the Amazon MGM Studios film The Pickup.
A U.S. Department of Labor spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter early Wednesday that an inquiry had been initiated into the incident. “As the investigation is open, we are unable to provide preliminary or interim information at this time,” the spokesperson added.
The accident in question occurred on a second unit set of the Atlanta-based film on Saturday and injured multiple crewmembers, an Amazon MGM Studios spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday. Crewmembers were shooting an action sequence that had previously been rehearsed and “did not go as planned,” the spokesperson stated. “We are still in the process of gathering facts on what happened and why, but first and foremost our thoughts are with those who are recovering.”

Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp is a movie directed by Jonathan A. Rosenbaum. It stars Eric Bauza, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Tom Kenny.
Basing on Woody, a character given life by producer Walter Lantz and cartoonist Ben “Bugs” Hardaway. Woody was a star from the 40s to 72. Yes, fifty years have passed, but here is Woody again, with all of the animation spirit.
Like what happened with the cinema adaptation of Tom & Jerry, this movie picks up an almost forgotten old cartoon and is, indeed, totally faithful to its original style: same characters, same jokes and, in current times, some might argue a bit out of context.
There will be those who like this blend of times in a kind of space-time wormhole … and others might not.
A movie totally designed for the youthful audience or for the nostalgics … very nostalgic ones.

"Toonami" debuted on the Cartoon Network in 1997, back when the network was just hitting its stride. Cartoon Network debuted in 1992, and originally offered mostly old animated reruns. It was, for years, the best place to find old Droopy cartoons, as well as Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry cartoons, old DC superhero fare, and reruns of Hanna-Barbera trash like "Scooby-Doo" and "The Flintstones."
In 1994, the network had the brilliant idea to repurpose a largely forgotten Hanna-Barbera character named Space Ghost, transforming him into a talk show host. "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" set a new dadaist tone for the Cartoon Network, proving that it could make hip, self-aware, original content in addition to its blocks of reruns. In 1996 and 1997, Cartoon Network launched a quartet of new shows -- "Dexter's Laboratory," "Johnny Bravo," "The Powerpuff Girls," and "Cow and Chicken" -- and their reputation was solidified. It was now a destination station.

In January 2019, Paul Simon awoke from a dream. Some voice in his head had informed him, deep within his Rem cycle, that he was going to work on a project called “Seven Psalms.” The singer-songwriter behind “The Sound of Silence,” “A Bridge Over Troubled Waters,” “Love Me Like a Rock,” and several dozen other songs that have likely been part of the soundtrack of your life, willingly or unwillingly, had effectively been retired for several years. Music-wise, he had nothing on deck except for this lovely little riff he’d...

“Wonka” reigns again on the VOD charts, but the week’s real star is Amazon/MGM’s “American Fiction.” Driven by its five Oscar nominations and continued success at the box office, it reached #2 at Apple TV/iTunes on Saturday and is currently #4. Not bad for a racial satire that’s grossed $17 million to date.
It suggests the film will earn substantially more than its theatrical take, reflecting smart strategy: While Amazon makes movies for streaming, it recognizes (like Apple) the value of making VOD its first at-home platform. It’s also a good argument that the Netflix Mo of deemphasizing theatrical and skipping VOD misses opportunities to get awards and audience traction.
“Oppenheimer” (Universal) repeats as #2 on two charts, though its reduced price keeps it from making Vudu revenue-driven list. Christopher Nolan’s Oscar frontrunner has been the strongest film since its home-viewing debut three months ago, now sustained by Oscar nomination-leading total.

One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.
“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

Warner Bros. Discovery has acquired BluTV, a subscription video-on-demand service in Turkey, the company said Friday. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.
“The announcement follows three years of extensive partnership, which started in 2021 with the launch of Discovery+ on BluTV and an investment by Discovery Inc. that made the company a 35 percent shareholder of BluTV,” Wbd said. “One of the components of the partnership was the option to invest further in BluTV, which has now resulted in the acquisition of the rapidly growing SVOD service.”
BluTV launched in Turkey in 2016 and then in the Middle East and Northern Africa (Mena) region in 2018. It is also available globally to Turkish- and Arabic-speaking audiences.
The streamer offers premium BluTV originals, Turkish TV series and movies, as well as Hollywood and international series and films. “BluTV offers more than 10,000 hours of on-demand premium content and live channels to BluTV subscribers,” the company says. Its...

Did you know "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie" was even happening before you clicked on this article? You would think Warner Bros. would treat the first-ever fully animated feature-length theatrical film (not including any of the previous "Looney Tunes" package movies that compile multiple shorts) featuring some of the most iconic cartoon characters in cinema history as a momentous occasion. But no, under the reign of current WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav, "The Day the Earth Blew Up" has thus far been treated as little more than extra "content" for the fire (apologies for using the C-word).
Case in point, the original plan was to quietly shuffle "The Day the Earth Blew Up" onto Max with little fanfare -- right up until Zaslav's regime went all Freddy Krueger on the streaming platform's animation department and canceled half a dozen of their developing projects back in...

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Lionsgate gave director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening a theatrical release on June 16th – but if you didn’t catch the movie on the big screen or if you did and want to watch it again in the comfort of your home as soon as possible, we have some good news. The Blackening is set to receive a Premium VOD release on July 7th. Yes, tomorrow!
Story directed The Blackening from a screenplay by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins. Inspired by a Perkins-scripted 3Peat comedy sketch that aired on Comedy Central in 2018, the film is about a group of Black friends who go away for the weekend only to find themselves trapped in a cabin with a killer who forces them to play a game with life-or-death consequences. Warner Bros. Discovery will rebrand its kids’ TV channel Boomerang to Cartoonito in Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong, with effect from July 28.
The company said that the “switch is a result of positive feedback to the Cartoonito-branded block on Boomerang and Cartoon Network launched in 2022, and is focused on being more inclusive to pre-school aged viewers.”
Sources close to the company explained that the move is “part of a big regional and global commitment by Wbd to preschool content.” It follows Cartoonito rebrands and launches in other international territories including Emea and LatAm.
As a full regional channel offering, Cartoonito will introduce a new generation to a diverse slate of original series and franchises. Modern preschool adaptations that support children’s potential include fan-favourite franchises such as “Batwheels” and “Bugs Bunny Builders.”

Exclusive: As the Annecy Animation Film Festival gets underway this weekend, Warner Bros’ newly hired President of Feature Animation Bill Damaschke has announced a rebranding of the motion picture division with a focus on filmmakers.
Previously known as Wag, aka Warner Animation Group, the Burbank, CA lot’s feature toon unit will now be known as Warner Bros Pictures Animation.
“It’s honoring the past and rich history of the company. Warner Bros Pictures Animation released movies like Iron Giant, Space Jam, Corpse Bride, Polar Express, Happy Feet and The Lego Movie — benchmark films that broke new ground, new technology, new ways of telling stories and were successful, artistically and commercially. They last in people’s hearts, every one of those films,” said Damaschke about the label, which counts a filmmaker-driven original feature animated canon from such directors as Brad Bird, Tim Burton, George Miller, Robert Zemeckis, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Road rage can be terrifying. Depending on where you live in America, a flipped bird can land you a honk in return, or something much more intense, and sometimes even violent. I grew up in a gun-toting rural area and heard road rage horror stories as a kid, so to this day I don't so much as let my passenger mean mug the drivers around me.
But what happens when you do end up entangled in a road rage incident and a moment of anger spirals far beyond a quick exchange? That's the premise for "Beef," the fantastic new Netflix series starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun. It's also the thought that led series creator Lee Sung Jin to come up with the show in the first place.

Atomic Heart (one of the biggest new games of 2023) is currently being protested and boycotted by Ukrainian officials, individual gamers, and other sources over the game’s subject matter and alleged ties to influential Russian sources.
While this situation is ongoing and still developing, here’s what you need to know about the controversy surrounding the game up until this point.
Why Is Atomic Heart Being Boycotted?
Most of the Atomic Heart boycotts and protests we’ve seen so far can be attributed to concerns regarding the game’s possible association with prominent Russian individuals and institutions.
Developer Mundfish describes itself as a “video game development studio headquartered in Cyprus” that is “led by a talented global team.” However, key members of its initial team are originally from Russia, and the developer is still described as a Russian studio by certain sources (including Russian media). Historically, the Mundfish team hasn...

(For the 30th anniversary of Sam Raimi's "Army of Darkness," we're looking back at some scary and funny anecdotes about the movie this week.)
Sequels -- especially horror ones -- have a bad reputation for repeating the original story. Part of this has to do with the rise of slashers during the 1980s. When the audience is there to see Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger, it's easy to follow the same beats of them killing teenagers in movie after movie, with only the window dressing changed.
However, the '80s were also the decade of Raimi's "Evil Dead," one of the wildest horror franchises out there. Now, "Evil Dead II" does have a similar story to the original — Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) and co. are stuck in a cabin in the woods, menaced by undead summoned via the Necromonicon. The sequel opens with an abbreviated version of the first film's events.

A new era for Warner Bros. animation is about to begin.
Veteran animation executive Bill Damaschke, who rose to lead DreamWorks Animation before its sale to NBCUniversal, is in final talks to take over as head of Warner Animation Group, the beleaguered animation arm of Warner Bros. Pictures..
The company has been leaderless since the exit of executive vp Allison Abbate, who departed in the summer of 2022 amid the Warners takeover by Discovery and the shake-up that followed. That included the shelving of Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, a completed feature that was co-written and produced by Abbate’s husband, Tony Cervone.
The executive is expected to report to Warners film bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. It is unclear what title he will hold.

Colin Jost became a household name for his humorous delivery of the “news” on Saturday Night Live‘s “Weekend Update.” He might also have garnered a fair amount of fame simply for being Scarlett Johansson’s husband. But the comedian has carved his own path to the spotlight.
Just as SNL helped cast members like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Bill Hader launch careers beyond the live stage at NBC, Jost has also dipped his toe into other acting waters. And whether he’s to be believed or not, it’s landed him some high-profile acting gigs — perhaps even without formal auditions.

Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer and founding member of both The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash, David Crosby, passed away yesterday at the age of 81. A legendary and influential musician, Crosby recently developed a new generation of fans following the theatrical documentary, "David Crosby: Remember My Name," which was narrated and produced by Cameron Crowe. Not long after, Crosby famously made headlines when he pulled his musical catalog from Spotify after they continued to platform problematic podcaster, Joe Rogan. When Crosby's passing was announced, fans rightfully cited his remarkable contributions to the world of music, but many also referenced his eclectic collection of appearances in film and television.
Crosby's music is as distinctive as his appearance, with his trademark mustache unmistakably "Crosby." The combination of his legacy and his distinguished look made him the perfect person to make random cameo appearances in sitcoms and in tertiary roles, in addition to fictionalized versions of himself.

As much as we respect Christopher Nolan for giving his Batman trilogy a clear-cut, definitive ending after only three films, one can't help but wonder what could've happened if there had been four or five movies in total. What other villains could Christian Bale's Batman have gotten to face off against, and what would that have looked like?
It's a juicy, albeit admittedly pointless question, as Nolan was always interested in doing no more than a trilogy, after all. But if a 2020 interview with Nolan and co-writer David S. Goyer is any indication, they would've picked the villain based on what they wanted Bruce Wayne's character arc in the film to be. "With these three films, and with 'Man Of Steel' even, we always said, 'What kind of story do we wanna tell about our protagonist, what kinda challenges do we want to have them face?'" Goyer explained.

Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty talked about his friendship with veteran actress Padmini Kolhapure and how in fact once he faked a stomach ache on the sets of one of their movies so that Padmini could run away and get married to the producer Pradeep Sharma in 1986.
He said: “Little does anyone know but I got Padmini married on the day of our shoot. In fact, I faked a stomach ache in front of everyone so that she could run away, get married and come back. I helped her run away that day, and till the time she didn’t come back, I continued acting as if I had a bad stomach ache. This is something no one has got to know till date.”
Both Mithun and Padmini came together after 33 years on the sets of the singing reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs’ and recalled some memories from their past.

There's a lot to like about "The White Lotus," between its sharp writing, superb casting, and incisive criticisms of the richest folks in our society. But one part of the show that's been a standout since its premiere has been its score.
Composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer's score in the show's first season was heavily percussive and intense, creating an atmosphere of tension highlighted by its Hawaiian tribal accents. It made every scene feel almost scary, like every scene was about to be interrupted by a sudden tiger attack. The show used the music's intensity to turn every one of the character's social interactions into more animalistic encounters, playing off one of the season's main themes, that humans are deep down just monkeys.
The show's second season, which is now two episodes deep, has been a big shift from the first. With an almost all-new cast and a brand-new location,...

Lionsgate has come out the winner in a bidding war over the distribution rights to director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening, which made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. Deadline reported that three offers, which were “just short of 20 million”, were made by potential distributors soon after the premiere screening. Apparently Lionsgate had the most appealing offer on the table. Now they’re planning to give the film a wide theatrical release.
Story directed The Blackening from a screenplay by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins. Inspired by a Perkins-scripted 3Peat comedy sketch that aired on Comedy Central in 2018, the film is about
a group of Black friends who go away for the weekend only to find themselves trapped in a cabin with a killer who forces them to play a game with life-or-death consequences. The idea asks a reasonable question: since it seems that...

It’s last call for a number of excellent Comedy Central series as well as a handful of genuinely great films on HBO Max this month.
On Oct. 31, the Comedy Central shows “Key and Peele,” “Nathan for You,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” “Reno 911!” and “Chappelle’s Show” (the first two seasons) will depart HBO Max, likely heading to Paramount+ at some point in November.
Also leaving HBO Max this month is the Halsey music film “If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power,” as well as the surprisingly great horror prequel “Annabelle: Creation.” Other noteworthy depatures include “Capote,” “High Fidelity,” “Jerry Maguire,” “McCabe and Mrs. Miller,” the 1994 version of “Little Women” and the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” movies.

Universal Acquires Action-Comedy ‘Regulators’ From Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios Starring Nicky Jam
Universal has acquired the rights to “Regulators,” an action-comedy produced by Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios that will star singer and “Bad Boys for Life” actor Nicky Jam, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Will Smith is producing the film on behalf of Westbrook along with Jon Mone, Miguel Melendez and Heather Washington for Westbrook Studios. Jam will also produce the film with Juan Diego Medina and Lorenzo Braun for his music label La Industria, Inc. and Three Six Zero.
“Regulators” is the second Westbrook Studios project that has picked up steam at a major studio in recent weeks after Paramount attached a director to a Smith passion project called “Brilliance,” one that at one point had the “King Richard” actor attached to star.
