I don't see this particular artistic project as just as parallel between Glauber Rocha's iconic Cinema Novo classic "Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol"
("Black God, White Devil") and the wisdom brought by revolutionary Antônio Conselheiro, a known figure after the conflict in Canudos, Bahia. It's a wide
view on the whole evolving coming from the battle of poor and common people against the armed Republican forces who wanted them evicted from the region, and
that tragedy moves to another resistance movement, the Cangaço (bandits) with Lampião, Corisco, Maria Bonita and many others, on similar fights against
the powerful people on the Northeast region of Brazil and that bit is what composes Glauber's film, through a series of poetic speeches about the region,
the men and the everlasting struggle for survival among those people.
The piece follows Carlos Sampaio in wild performances using verbatim from the forementioned names, including his own views as well, as he moves
through many historical places from the region, specially the ones where the 1964 film was made. An interesting project that validates the whole culture
developed in the area, the popularity of it all and how it remaind on people's collective minds through almost 100 years later. It certainly makes a great
addition to the classic Rocha film, "Os Cangaceiros" (1953 or 1997 remake), "Guerra de Canudos" (1997) epic film and also the writings of Euclides da Cunha
"Os Sertões", where he covered the Canudos War. Viewers can get a wide scope about the social constracts of Northeast with problems and dilemas that are
still present not only in that place but also in many others when it comes to the issue of social justice, freedom, land reform and the clashes between those who have with those who have not. 6/10.
