Well it took long enough.
20 minutes into the 8th and final episode of season 4 and we have a plot. Does it justify having to wade through the first 7 episodes of the year? No, it does not. I'm afraid the mystery behind how Ari ended up nearly drowning the lake just hasn't been enough.
The eternal question: "was she pushed or did she jump?" to put it one way. Well at least in true Elite fashion from earlier seasons, the answer comes with a twist (which I won't reveal as I don't want to give away a spoiler ... not that there can be a spoiler when the writers have already spoiled the entire season).
This entire series has been about triangles. But do the romantic triangles have anything to do with the plot? Let's have a look.
First we have the Ari, Guzman, Samuel triangle. Is it related to the plot? Well as the only decent plot is Ari in the lake then obviously it does.
Secondly, we have the Mencia, Rebe, Armando triangle and, yes, it is related to the plot given Mencia is Ari's sister and also Rebe has a role here as well.
Next we have the tedious, interminable, boring, Patrick, Omar, Ander triangle. Related? Not really. It was all just tedious, interminable and boring.
Finally we have the Phillipe and Cayetana triangle. Hang on. A triangle with two sides? In this case the triangle really is completed by Phillipe's mysterious past which ends up being represented by his mother in the last couple of episodes. But is it related to the plot? In that Phillipe and his mother host the New Year's bash where Ari ends up in the lake, yes, but otherwise, a categorical no.
All in all, a wasted 7 episodes only serving to set up the likely departure of two of the lead characters in a closing scene as we head into next year with just the faintest possibility of a follow-up to the true story behind Ari's near drowning if that's where the writers take it.
