Video game movies have come a long way in the last several years, with the likes of "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," among others, making great strides. As a result, many Hollywood studios are turning to the gaming world in hopes of finding the next great big-screen franchise. To that end, Lionsgate is set to release "Borderlands" as one of this summer's big blockbusters and yes, it is based on an extremely popular series of games.
This one has been in the works for a long time and even finished filming several years ago. But it's finally arriving this year and fans will soon know if this will be the next step in the right direction for video game movies. Last week, the trailer for director Eli Roth’s long-awaited video game adaptation Borderlands, which is set to reach theatres on August 9th, made its way online – and while talking to Entertainment Weekly about the trailer, Roth revealed that he’s currently writing a horror script with 16-year-old Borderlands cast member Ariana Greenblatt, who plays Tiny Tina in the upcoming movie!
Roth told Entertainment Weekly that Greenblatt “loves horror, and we have a great idea, so we’re writing a movie together. That is an exclusive, nobody knows that. I don’t want to say anything about it yet, but she’s so smart I’m like, ‘Let’s write a movie together, and we’ll produce it together, and I’ll direct it, and you’ll star in it.’” Of course, Roth didn’t give away any details about the story he and Greenblatt are collaborating on. In Hollywood, January is generally considered a "dump month" where studios dump movies that they lack confidence in. Scattered box office hits like "American Sniper," "Bad Boys for Life," and last year's "M3GAN" have defied those expectations (mainly by taking advantage of the lack of competition), but this week's biggest release fits the "dump month" box to a tee. Sci-fi thriller "I.S.S." -- which stars Ariana Debose ("West Side Story") and was directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite ("Blackfish") -- grossed just $1.2 million from 2,520 theaters on its opening day (including Thursday previews), and is projected to gross just $3.3 million in its opening weekend, per Variety.
This won't come as a surprise if, like me, you've seen almost no marketing for this movie. "I.S.S." was distributed by Bleecker Street, which also released Meg Ryan's "What Happens Later" and Catherine Hardwicke's "Mafia Mamma" in 2023. Both of those movies scored smaller opening weekends...

The release calendar for new movies over the next couple of weeks could best be described using an image of a tumbleweed lazily making its way across a desolate road. January has always been known as a dump month for Hollywood but this year is particularly bad as so many movies were pushed to later this year (or into 2025) due to the strikes last year. But it's not as though we have nothing coming down the pipeline. To that end, Bleecker Street is bringing an original sci-fi thriller in the form of "I.S.S." to a theater near you next weekend. Can it defy the odds and become a relatively rare original sci-fi hit?
As it stands, the film figures to have a muted debut. Box Office Pro currently has director Gabriela Cowperthwaite's latest taking in anywhere between $2 and $7 million on opening weekend. That's a pretty wide range but even...

A Quiet Place (2018) co-writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods returned in 2023 as directors and co-writers of the 2023 science fiction film 65. Released in the early quarter of 2023 on March 10, 2023, 65 held so much promise as one of the year’s earliest Box Office hits. However, besides its mixed or average reviews, it was far from being one of the year’s Box Office competitors. Set 65 million years ago, 65 (2023) follows a pilot whose two-year space expedition transporting humans in cryonic chambers is cut short after a mass of asteroids hits his ship. This forces...

"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" has worked its way into the hearts of fans across the country since it was released this June. The movie stars Miles Morales as he meets many different versions of Spider-Man (and Spider-Woman) who are trying to keep the Spider-Verse itself from breaking apart. Their leader, Miguel O'Hara (aka Spider-Man 2099), tells Miles that he's not supposed to be Spider-Man at all and that if he doesn't let his story follow some specific canon events (like the death of his dad), the universe will fall apart.
Fans will have to wait for the sequel, "Beyond the Spider-Verse," to arrive, but in the meantime, they've come up with a lot of theories for it. One of the most popular is that Gwen Stacy, aka Spider-Woman on Earth-65, is actually trans. And now, the beloved movie is streaming on Netflix, letting even more fans into this chaotic story...

For 30 years, the "Jurassic Park" films have helped keep prehistoric beasts on the big screen, dating back to Steven Spielberg's original, groundbreaking blockbuster. Ever since, this has pretty much been the only game in town as far as dinosaurs go. Sure, other movies have tried to do dino action on a large scale, such as the recent Adam Driver sci-fi flick "65," but nothing ever seems to truly click with audiences in a meaningful way. At least not nearly on the level that these movies have for three decades.
Across three decades and spanning six films, the franchise has come a long way. For anyone looking to revisit the series, or perhaps anyone who fell off at some point and wishes to get back on board to see what John Hammond's dream of uniting dinosaurs and mankind together after 65 million years resulted in, we've got you covered. “Ahsoka” has been climbing its way up the streaming charts since its August debut.
On Tuesday, Disney+ streamed the Star Wars series midseason episode, which expanded on Ahsoka Tano’s (Rosario Dawson) reunion with her former Jedi master Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen).
The episode, titled “Shadow Warrior” also introduced a young Ahsoka, played by teen actor Ariana Greenblatt. If Greenblatt looks familiar underneath all that makeup and prosthetics, it’s because she appeared in two other major projects this year.
Read on to find more about her “Ahsoka” appearance and career.

This article contains spoilers for "Ahsoka" episode 5, "Dark Warrior."
Given the pretty massive cliffhanger fans were left with at the end of "Ahsoka" episode 4, "Fallen Jedi," expectations were sky-high headed into episode 5. But Dave Filoni isn't one to disappoint. The episode, titled "Shadow Warrior," in some ways represented a culmination of the filmmaker's many years working in "Star Wars" up to this point. It even allowed him to bring a young Ahsoka Tano to life in live-action. For those who felt like the actor underneath that young Ahsoka makeup felt familiar, there's a very good reason for that.
Fans of "The Clone Wars" had a lot to soak in with the episode serving as a real blast from the past, as we got to see Anakin Skywalker and a younger Ahsoka Tano in the heart of battle long before he became Darth Vader and she left the Jedi Order. It was just Anakin and Snips.

On paper, it seemed like a quiet weekend at the box office. "Blue Beetle" entered its second weekend and the only major newcomer was Sony's racing drama "Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story," which is, as the title implies, based on a real story about a gamer who ends up getting the chance to become a racing driver. But between National Cinema Day bringing out tons of moviegoers on Sunday and an unexpectedly tight race for the top spot on the charts, things did get interesting after all. Now, Warner Bros. and Sony are in a bit of a dispute over who actually came in at number one. So, was it "Gran Turismo" or "Barbie" on top? It depends on who you ask.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. is claiming that "Barbie" was the number one movie this past weekend, with Greta Gerwig's blockbuster taking in $15.1 million in its sixth frame.

The behind-the-scenes of ‘The Creator’ was released, clearly showing the Sony FX3 as the dominant (and only?) camera on set. As demonstrated in the BTS, the advantages of the FX3 were well utilized in short and fast cuts, to deliver this ‘Vietnam- robotic sci-fi’ movie to IMAX. Explore what director Gareth Edwards has to say about his shooting style, allowed by the compactness of the FX3.

Original R-rated comedies are a dying breed in theaters, which is why all eyes were on Jennifer Lawrence's "No Hard Feelings" heading into its release this summer. The film casts the Oscar-winner as Maddie, a woman who tries to solve her financial woes by responding to a Craigslist ad to "date" an unworldly, college-inbound 19-year-old named Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) at the behest of his wealthy, meddling parents (Laura Benanti and Matthew Broderick). What could possibly go wrong?
Directed by Gene Stupnitksky from a script he's credited for writing with John Phillips, "No Hard Feelings" wasn't exactly a hit (it grossed $83.5 million against a $45 million budget). It did, however, fare much better than other recent adult sex comedies at the box office, which is our cue to pour one out for "Bros" and "Joy Ride." Reviews were pretty decent too; /Film's Josh Spiegel gave it a 7 out of 10 in his review,...

It's Barbie's world and we're just living in it. Warner Bros. released director Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" in theaters over the weekend and, despite some very serious, much-hyped direct competition from Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," the film managed to make history with a record-breaking $162 million domestic box office debut. The record-breaking, however, wasn't over — this Monday the film broke a record that has been held by "The Dark Knight" for 15 years.
"Barbie" earned $26.1 million domestically on Monday (per The Numbers), the best performance ever for a Warner Bros. release. The previous record holder for a Monday at the box office in the studio's storied history was, indeed, Nolan's "The Dark Knight," which took in $24.6 million on its first Monday back in 2008, as noted by Variety. It is not lost on me, or likely anyone, that Nolan is involved once again, in a sense, as "Oppenheimer" is in direct competition with "Barbie.

It’s the latest example of what co-ceo Ted Sarandos called “sports-adjacent” programming on Wednesday’s earnings call, and this one scored big.
Initial viewership of the series proved that football still reigns as an American favorite, and Netflix might not need to pay up for expensive broadcasting rights to profit from the national obsession. Newly released Netflix docuseries “Quarterback” takes viewers on an inside look at the lives of some of the league’s most-watched players’ off the gridiron.
A total of 1.1 million households tuned into the premiere episode of the series in its first five days released, according to the latest Wrap Report for the week of July 10-16.

Bron Studios, the Canadian finance and production company that emerged as a media force in 2017 and has backed awards favorites like “Joker,” “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “Licorice Pizza” and commercial plays like “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” “The Mule” and “65,” has filed for bankruptcy.
Co-founder and CEO Aaron L. Gilbert disclosed the news in a statement on Wednesday, penning a letter to the banner’s “friends, partners, team members and backers.”
“Having explored many options for many months, Bron had no choice but to take this step in light of its financial circumstances. The last few years have been incredibly difficult for Bron, and things have only gotten more complicated over these past months,” Gilbert shared, citing the Covid pandemic and both the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes as insurmountable headwinds for the company’s continued operations. The exec also stated that the company would not be doing press.

Bron, the Canadian studio behind films including “Joker” and Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule,” filed for cross-border bankruptcy on Wednesday.
“The decision to seek creditor protection was not taken lightly and was adopted with a view to the best interests of the company and its many stakeholders,” a company memo from CEO Aaron L. Gilbert read.
The company filed for creditor protection in Vancouver, B.C., and Chapter 15 in the U.S.
Gilbert wrote that Bron will be working with its creditors and stakeholders alongside court-appointed monitor Grant Thornton Limited and that proceedings “are expected to be completed by late

He thanked the Bron team, as well as the company’s “incredible creative, production, and business partners,” as corporate backers and reps and service providers for “all the support and patience through a very tough few years.”

Hollywood actors and writers may be on the picket line, due to the many issues they have with various studios and networks, but they can’t really say that all streamers aren’t reporting how their shows and movies are faring. That’s exactly what Netflix has been doing each and every week with the Top 10 charts for the week of July 10, giving a detailed report on its current films and series, as “The Lincoln Lawyer” took the top spot for the latter and the sci-fi sequel “Bird Box Barcelona” entered the charts.
We’ll begin with the latter, since “Bird Box Barcelona” is the sequel to one of Netflix’s biggest hits, 2018’s “Bird Box” starring Sandra Bullock, the streamer’s fourth most-watched feature film ever. In this case, as the title implies, the post-apocalyptic action has been moved to Spain, and thusly, it charted on the non-English film...

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘ is the second installment of what will be an animated movie trilogy revolving around Miles Morales, a variant of Spider-Man from Earth-1610, aka the Marvel Ultimate universe.
The first film, ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ dropped back in 2018 and garnered incredible reviews, winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film – and rightfully so. Five years later, we finally got the sequel, which absolutely met our expectations.
The movie arrived in theaters worldwide on June 2, 2023, and immediately blew us away with an even more complex story and the signature phenomenal animation that basically granted its prequel the Oscar nod. It also grossed around $664 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Marvel films in recent years.
But, if you missed the movie when it was in theaters – or just can’t wait to give it another watch – you might’ve wondered when you’ll be able to watch ‘Spider-Verse 2’ at home.

Three VOD charts and Netflix’s top 10 all resulted in films set in non-Earth planetary worlds leading the pack in home viewing. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Disney) is #1 on VOD (at $19.99) at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, while “65,” four months after its theatrical release and multiple weeks scoring on VOD, tops Netflix’s movie chart.
“Galaxy” had a two-month window, as Disney increasingly slows down its initial home releases (“Avatar: The Way of Water” waited 100 days), and then to PVOD, not streaming. It was dominant enough that it led Vudu’s revenue-based list, even though it was only available for three of the seven days of their full-week rankings.

In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Oppenheimer director, Christopher Nolan, talks about his favorite toys, which are IMAX film cameras. “The headline, for me, is by shooting on IMAX 70mm film, you’re really letting the screen disappear. You’re getting a feeling of 3D without the glasses” Nolan says. Do you agree?
IMAX Presents: A Rare BTS Look of Oppenheimer First ‘Film in IMAX’ drama?
Most probably, Oppenheimer will be the first movie drama filmed in IMAX. At first, you ask yourself why shooting a drama on cumbersome and complex IMAX cameras. But then, you can answer that as well: Because Nolan can. And it looks beautiful as hell. Cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema elaborated regarding that challenge: “IMAX is a medium format of spectacle and it’s made for vistas, but I got curious of to use it as an intimate format. Faces look like a landscape.

As the summer movie season motors along, we’re bound to get several more films grossing $100 million at the domestic box office. Universal and Blumhouse’s horror film “M3GAN,” released the very first weekend of 2023, may not be one of them, but as of now it is still the only original movie that isn’t a sequel or remake that holds a place in the Top 10 with the $95 million it’s made in North America.
Directed by Gerard Johnston and starring Allison Williams, the high-concept sci-fi horror film opened with $30.4 million in 3,509 theaters on the weekend of January 6. It managed to stick around for a while, which isn’t always the case with horror. The fact that it has done so well without being a remake or sequel is quite astounding when you look at the rest of the list of 2023 blockbusters.

“65” is a sci-fi thriller that follows a pilot (Adam Driver) and a young girl (Ariana Greenblatt) who crash-land on Earth 65 million years ago and have to survive among dinosaurs and other dangers. The film is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who also wrote A Quiet Place, and produced by Sam Raimi. The film was released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on May 30, 2023.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray offers a stunning visual presentation that showcases the 4K source and enhances the detail and contrast of the film. The Dolby Atmos soundtrack is also impressive, especially during the action scenes and the score by Bear McCreary. However, the disc is lacking in bonus features, as it only includes a few deleted scenes and a short featurette on the making of the film.
In my opinion, 65 is a fun and exciting film that delivers on its premise of space man vs dinosaurs.

In the wake of A Quiet Place and 65, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have set up their next project, with Deadline announcing the A24 horror movie Heretic this afternoon.
Beck and Woods wrote the screenplay and they’re also directing the film.
Additionally, Hugh Grant (D&d: Honor Among Thieves) is in talks to star. Update: THR now reports that Chloe East (The Fabelmans) is also in talks to star.
Deadline reports…
“Plot details are officially under wraps, but the film is rumored to center on two young women of faith who are lured into a cat-and-mouse game in the home of an eccentric man.”
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods wrote A Quiet Place with director John Krasinski, and they just wrote/directed the high concept Adam Driver dinosaur movie 65 earlier this year.
The duo also wrote/directed Haunt and wrote this year’s Stephen King film The Boogeyman.

Get ready for a continuation of the recurrent rotation between “The Super-Mario Bros.” (Universal) and “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) as #1 and #2 on PVOD charts. Both films (each priced at $19.99) will likely add two more weeks minimum back and forth atop the lists after a similar battle the last two.
Netflix meantime has about as top-heavy a list of older theatrical releases, with only one original making their top 10 (in tenth place). Of note there — “To Leslie,” virtually unknown before Andrea Riseborough’s surprise Oscar Best Actress nomination, initially reached #1 before dropping to a still notable #2 (behind the 2013 comedy “We’re the Millers”).
“John Wick” kept “Smb” from a second week at #1 when it was released. But this week, “Smb,” by far the biggest domestic theatrical hit for 2023 so far, returned to #1 at both iTunes and Vudu. “John Wick” still leads at Google Play, but that site usually lags for a few days,...

This article contains Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse spoilers
Sony is giving the Marvel Cinematic Universe a run for its money, and much like there’s no stopping the ever-expanding multiverse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has weaved a complex web of Spider-People into the lives of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld).
While Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (Ssu) struggles to find where it fits alongside the MCU, Across the Spider-Verse brings us one step closer to a unified Spider-Family. We’re a far cry from those feuds between Disney and Sony – where it looked like Tom Holland’s wall-crawling hero would be annexed – but that doesn’t mean both sides are quite agreeing on everything.

The ending of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has as many threads as a spider’s web.
The superhero sequel ends on a major cliffhanger, which co-director Joaquim dos Santos likened to “The Empire Strikes Back” in an interview with SFX Magazine.
“We hope that it’s a satisfying tee-up for what’s coming in the third film, because you want people to be excited about what’s coming next,” co-director Kemp Powers added. “And it helps that we knew going in that this was part two of a three-part story. Since you already know that that third story is guaranteed, you can tackle it a bit differently. That being said, there’s a lot of key characters in this film, and there’s a story in this film that has an arc of its own that we needed to complete.”

The complexity of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” became evident even prior to the completion of its ground-breaking, Oscar-winning predecessor, “Into the Spider-Verse,” so producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller recruited three new directors, who eagerly asked to join the franchise: Joaquim Dos Santos (“The Legend of Korra”), Kemp Powers (“Soul” co-director and “One Night in Miami” Oscar-nominated screenwriter), and Justin K. Thompson (“Into the Spider-Verse” production designer). The producers called them their “band of musicians,” with each contributing his own creative specialty in helping Miles Morales forge his own Spidey path in this epic sequel.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is a film that is as visually stunning as it is philosophical. After the first chapter of Miles Morales’ journey in 2018, (Into The Spider-Verse) directors Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson, and Joaquim Dos Santos bring the spectacle that is nothing short of a woven tapestry of comic book realness. With an action-packed concept, it’s a roller-coaster ride through alternate realities and timelines as the viewer is introduced to hundreds of Spider-people.
Written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Dave Callaham, this movie hosts a stacked voice, including Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Daniel Kaluuya, Issa Rea, Oscar Issac, Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Jason Schwartzman, Karan Soni, Luna Lauren Velez, Shea Wigham, and Andy Samberg.
The film starts with a bit of backstory on Gwen Stacy, aka Spider-Gwen (Steinfeld) in Earth-65, and how she gained her powers, in addition to what happened to Peter Parker from her universe.

Every world gets the Spider-Man it deserves. And here on Earth-1610, our webslinger is one Miles Morales: a half-Black, half-Puerto Rican teen who loves graffiti, Air Jordans, and quantum physics. Like most Spider-Folk, he was bit by a radioactive arachnid, developed the ability to crawl up walls and sense oncoming danger, ginned himself up some shooters and a suit, and learned that with great power came great responsibility. He also managed to save the many multiverses from collapsing in on each other, after a handful of other interdimensional Spideys — Spider-Gwen,...

After their mind-blowing “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Oscar-winning producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller break even more animation rules in “Across the Spider-Verse,” the second installment in Miles Morales’ three-part journey about becoming the most creative and individualistic Spider-Man.

Arguably the best look yet at “Barbie” was released Thursday by Warner Bros. The new trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film mixes goofy comedy with some existential conflict while also showcasing the star turns from leads Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
The “Barbie” main trailer opens with the title hero (Robbie) having yet another “best day ever” and a blowout party that gets interrupted when Barbie asks her friends if they ever think about dying. The cracks in her happy facade continue from there before Barbie and Ken (Gosling) are forced to go to the “real world” to find out the “truth about the universe.” Once in reality, Barbie and Ken are faced with confrontation and disinterest as they seemingly must work to escape the clutches of a corporate overlord (played by Will Ferrell). Think “Elf” meets “Lady Bird” meets “The Lego Movie.”

Redbox first gained a reputation as the company that helped Netflix bring down Blockbuster. Redbox rental kiosks still litter the country’s grocery stores and gas stations, a reminder of a time when most home media took the form of physical discs that had to be returned after watching.
But unlike Blockbuster, Redbox has continued to evolve past the offering of physical home media. It also operates a digital rental platform, which is likely a big reason Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) saw Redbox as a worthwhile acquisition. Csse purchased Redbox last summer in a deal worth around $375 million.
That investment is paying off handsomely, according to Csse. This week, the company announced that Redbox saw its highest revenue-earning week ever from May 14 through May 21.
