ScreamFest La is now in full swing, and I could not be more ready for a week+ of horror movies from some of the best up-and-coming horror producers/directors in the world! I attended opening night on Tuesday and was treated to Epic Pictures & The October Society’s horror anthology Tales Of Halloween. The film included ten short terrifying—and sometimes hilarious—films from the likes of Adam Gierasch (Fertile Ground, Night Of The Demons), Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy), Axelle Carolyn (Centurion, Soulmate), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2-4), Dave Parker (The Hills Run Red), John Skipp (Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child), Lucky Mckee (The Woman), Mike Mendez (The Gravedancers), Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent), Paul Solet (Grace), and Ryan Schifrin (Abominable).
There are quite a few horror movies reaching the silver screen this weekend, but Tales Of Halloween is the perfect film for the season.

In 2006, Alan Jones of Total Film coined the term "Splat Pack" to identify a group of young directors who were making waves at the box office with a crop of ultra-violent, hard-r horror films like "Hostel" (Eli Roth), "High Tension" (Alexandre Aja) and "Saw" (James Wan). Included in that group was Neil Marshall, who made his feature directorial debut with 2002's well-received werewolf horror-comedy "Dog Soldiers" and hit a high point with 2005's "The Descent," a harrowingly bleak, blood-drenched creature feature about a group of spelunkers being terrorized by pale-skinned humanoid cave dwellers. Though Marshall has dipped in and out of horror in the years since -- his recent credits include the 2010 historical actioner "Centurion" and two episodes of HBO's "Game of Thrones" -- he remains most closely associated with the genre that made him a star. Now he's making a return to form with "Tales of Halloween," a new ten-part anthology film created,...

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.
Writer/director Paul Solet first made a name for himself on the horror scene with his short film “Grace,” which he later adapted into an excellent feature starring Jordan Ladd. His contribution to Tales of Halloween, a pseudo-futuristic punk rock Spaghetti Western called “The Weak and the Wicked,” reunites a few cast members from his most recent feature, Dark Summer, and also showcases a different side of Solet.
Your segment, “The Weak and the Wicked,” is very much an homage to Sergio Leone. Did the story you came up with lend itself to that aesthetic or did you set out to make a Spaghetti Western-inspired piece and design the story to match that?

It may only be July, but it can take a while to get in just the right mood for certain annual festivities. So, thank goodness for the early arrival of a trailer for Tales Of Halloween – an anthology horror movie featuring ten different segments, directed by eleven different directors.
“Ten stories are woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only, to terrorise unsuspecting residents.”
In many respects, an advantage of a horror anthology is the fact that it allows for many filmmakers to showcase their work, giving the whole project a fascinating blend of flavours. However, what is notable about Tales Of Halloween, is that – despite – featuring the work of very individual directors, there is an overall tone that snakes through each one, making it feel very much like part of a larger whole.

Not only does he talk about Dark Summer‘s story, finding Keir Gilchrist, and selecting music for the movie, but he also give readers a tease of his Tales of Halloween segment that we’ll have a chance to check out later this year:
Mike Le wrote the script, but did you make adjustments to the story to fit what we see on screen?
Paul Solet: Mike’s structure was the movie that the producers were excited about making, so that stood. The principal twists and turns stand, but there were changes to the scene structure and execution. From scene to scene, within the scene, there were dialogue and structure changes.
Can you talk about finding your leading man in Keir Gilchrist?...

"Dark Summer" centers on a not-so-innocent teenage boy who gets put on house arrest after cyber-stalking a girl at his school. When his mother goes out of town, leaving him home alone, strange things start to happen around the house. The release of Paul Solet's sophomore feature film comes nearly five years after the Sundance premiere of his directorial debut "Grace," which was also a horror film. But 17 year old Daniel Austin gets none of that because his obsessive online stalking of his classmate and crush, Mona Wilson, got him put on house arrest for the whole summer. So, no cell phone, no Internet, no leaving the property, and especially no Mona. Then Daniel’s single mother has to go on a long business trip, and Daniel has the place to himself.
Daniel figures out a way to piggyback onto his neighbors’ wireless signal and believing he’s surfing off the grid,...

Anthology horror films are a tricky beast. The rule of thumb is, usually only half of the segments are generally satisfying while the remainder leave a lot to be desired (save for the few successes such as Asylum, Creepshow, and Trick ‘r Treat). Epic Pictures Group recently announced that they will help produce a new horror anthology set for release next year around Halloween. The new anthology, Tales of Halloween, is based on a concept created by Soulmate director Axelle Carolyn.
Twitch reports:
The ten stories will be woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only to terrorize unsuspecting residents. Apart from Carolyn the list of directors, under the name The October Society, includes her husband Neil Marshall (The Descent), Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), Joe Begos (Almost Human), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II,...

Every year, crackling bonfires, a steaming witch’s brew, and the crunch of dead leaves come together for a creepy Halloween night concoction that makes one feel like anything could happen. Michael Dougherty’s 2007 anthology film Trick ’r Treat certainly embraced the magic of this night and now a group of directors collectively called The October Society have begun development on Tales of Halloween.
A film featuring ten interconnected segments from 11 directors, Tales of Halloween begins shooting this November. Horror readers fond of the splatterpunk genre may be happy to hear that John Skipp, co-author of The Light at the End, the sought after Fright Night novelization, Animals, and many more novels will co-direct one of the segments with Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy). Neil Marshall (The Descent),Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III & IV), and Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!) are among the other directors.

Horror movie fans have a new anthology film project in development called Tales of Halloween. The film follows in the footsteps of previously released horror anthologies such as the Trick 'r Treat, V/H/S, and The ABCs of Death. I've always enjoyed watching movies like this! I grew up on films and shows such as Tales From the Crypt, Black Sabbath, Tales From the Dark Side, and the Creepshow. As long as Tales of Halloween turns out to be fun and entertaining I'll watch it.
The news come from Deadline, who reports that the movie will consist of ten segments from eleven directors. It will be an interconnected series of stories, and they will all be set in "a sleepy American suburb terrorized by ghouls, aliens, and killers one Halloween night."

Do you like your horror in easily digestible bite-sized pieces thrown together by a spooky wraparound story? That’s right, you got it, I’m referring to the horror genre’s latest trend – anthology franchises. As V/H/S and The ABC’s Of Death have proven, fans are happily gobbling up this new stylistic angle, and now there’s another one afoot. Deadline reports that the Epic Pictures Group are assembling a new anthology called Tales Of Halloween.
The report suggests that this new approach will enlist a great many horror maestros for the upcoming outing. The biggest names leading the pack are Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) and Darren Bousman (Saw), who’ll no doubt attract fans who may not be familiar with some of the lesser-known filmmakers. That’s inevitably one of the most promising aspects of this type of film; offering fledgling directors the opportunity...

In life there are ‘certainties’ and then there are ‘near certainties.’ Whilst the former might be represented by the rising and setting of the sun, the latter is most fittingly represented by Adam Green’s on and off the screen FrightFest attendance record. With a slight sense of amazement he reflected, “Every movie I have ever made has played here… every single one… its crazy.” In 2014 the trend is set to continue as the lights fade in the Discovery Screen 1 on Saturday evening for Digging up the Marrow!
So as Green prepares for his eighth FrightFest in nine years [abstaining from FrightFest 2012 not by free will and with an amusing story to the value of $75,000 to follow] he took us behind the story of one filmmaker and one festival.
There’s no better place to start than at the beginning, so how did your FrightFest journey begin?
Hatchet had world premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and whilst it did great, Tribeca is not a genre festival.

I’m back! It’s been a long time and I apologise for that, moving house turned out to be a far far longer process than I anticipated or had been led to believe. Three weeks turned into six, six weeks turned into three months and now here we are.
Aside from the length of time it takes, moving house was a real eye opener in other areas too. Specifically in terms of how I inform you week on week of all of this wonderful content available to stream and then how you have to put up with lacklustre delivery from various ISPs. I was living in someone else’s house on a connection that was not my own, not wanting to name names but there is one of the big three ISP’s in the UK which boasts about having one of, if not the, fastest broadband delivery on...

Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome is a relatively rare form of child abuse that involves the exaggeration or fabrication of illnesses or symptoms by a primary caregiver. The central idea around which everything swirls in Zack Parker's Proxy is as brilliant as it is dark, exaggerating a real medical condition in a similar fashion to what David Cronenberg did with the hysteria and outcry when soft core skin flicks were shown on local TV stations - the result was Videodrome - or how Paul Solet examined, in his film Grace, how newborn children sap the resources of their mothers and bring about an anxious protectiveness. The best horror movies exaggerate the anxieties of our times. Proxy illustrates how the egos and minds of new parents (or...

Wolfcop is a horror comedy from CineCoup. This title is completed and the film will release in select theatres June 6th, 2014. Wolfcop deals with an alcoholic cop, who is transformed into a hairy beast through a Satanic ritual. The film is from director Lowell Dean (13 Eerie). Also, the film stars Leo Fafard (Grace), Amy Matysio (Stranded), Jonathan Cherry and Sarah Lind. A preview of the film's launch is here. Director Dean gives more backstory on the character Wolfcop. Dean says of this werecreature: “my vision for Wolfcop was always somewhere between monster and anti-hero.” As well, Dean has taken some of the inspiration for the character from classic creatures of the past "I wanted the look to be an homage to the practical-effects werewolves of the past, characters like Lon Chaney Jr.'s Wolfman and Michael J. Fox as Teen Wolf -- but with a violent twist -- hence, the ridiculously large claws.

It's often pretty interesting when a smart male filmmaker tells a horror story that's about women. Directors like Eric England (Contracted), Paul Solet (Grace), or Lucky McKee (May, The Woman, etc.) But wouldn't it be a cool switch to see a horror story about a man that was written and directed by a woman? I say hell yes it would. Granted, Leigh Janiak's debut, Honeymoon, isn't strictly about a man; it's actually about a newlywed couple who arrive at an old family cabin to enjoy a sweet, old-fashioned honeymoon together. But beyond that, Honeymoon is about a young woman who seems to change into a new person overnight -- and the poor devoted husband who knows something is wrong, but has no idea how to figure it out. The premise is simple and the presentation is admirably low-key, but it's in the screenplay department (which Ms. Janiak wrote with...

Director: Paul Solet

Producer: Ross M. Dinerstein
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Peter Stormare, Grace Phipps, Keir Gilcrhist
After the success of his delightfully creepy 2009 debut, Grace, director Paul Solet returns with this thriller headlined by the young star of It’s Kind of a Funny Story, and, even more excitingly, Peter Stormare. While his last film was developed from his own short, we’re curious to see how Solet branches out in genre and this next effort should give us a definite indication, with enough scant details to garner some interest.

Well it finally happened; Now TV added a superb catch up/live option for their TV channels including Sky Atlantic, Living, Fox and even UK Gold! So now for just £4.99 a month you can get shows like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Hannibal and Eastbound and Down as they happen or whenever you want.
Considering that the movies package is now just £8.99 a month and the TV is £4.99 on top of this, it becomes clear that this is probably going to place them as the major contender now and Lovefilm/Amazon and Netflix need to start cranking out those exclusive series’ with major names pretty fast.

Although mainstream horror cinema has been slow to churn out titles, and as of late seems to have opted to focus primarily on remaking the classics of yesteryear, there are a vast quantity of low budget and independent horror films coming out every week. Due to limited means and the microscopic marketing budgets associated with independent filmmaking, it’s easy for quality films to slip through the cracks. In response, we created this recurring segment to explore some interesting horror movies that might have flown under your radar. [If you missed out on our previous lists of forgotten gems, follow the links to Parts One, Two, and Three of our series.] Now we present yet another five horror films from the past five years that you may have overlooked... but should definitely see. Dream Home (2010) It’s difficult to describe this multifaceted film, as it functions on so many different levels.
