Sony Pictures Animation must certainly be enjoying how people are taking in the Pac-Man-heavy marketing for this weeks' Pixels (and, to the film's mild credit, he is the best part of it), because the suits in charge have ponied up the near seven figures to have some other yellow-faced friends transition to the big screen. In a heated three-studio audition, Sony won the right to have their banner placed in front of an Emoji movie. With Warner Bros and Paramount reported to be the other two studios vying to get the expressive, social media/text message-based personalities their cinematic due, it's apparently a ripe opportunity to take this property (c) to the next level, as the Japan-hatched ideograms don't subside themselves to any pesky rights, making them essentially free-reign when it comes to marketing, promoting and all that jazz. Does it matter that they'll have to take the extra route...

This week’s Jim’s Notebook gets emptied out with remnants of my East Coast trip, where I hit the set of Smash as well as New York Comic-Con. But once I landed back in La-la-Land, I was off and running to cover a slew of other TV happenings...
Smash If you read last week’s Notebook, you caught part of my chat with Law & Order: Svu star Danny Pino. The day after visiting Svu on location in Brooklyn, I was off to Queens to spend some time at the set of Smash, where the cast was busy shooting episode eight of the second season.
With new blood coming in like Jennifer Hudson, Broadway’s Jeremy Jordan and a Will & Grace reunion with Sean Hayes and regular Debra Messing, NBC is giving it their all to shape Smash into a, well, smash when it returns, more than likely in January...

Wow, wow, wow! Thanks to everyone for making it out to the hugely successful December Hollywood Web Television Meetup last night which packed the James Cagney Boardroom at the Screen Actors Guild with nearly 300 members of Hollywood's burgeoning web television community. Studio executives, agents, managers, actors, writers, producers, show creators and fans lined the walls to hear presentations from Cristian Cussen, VP of Original Content at MySpaceTV and web superstar Felicia Day, creator of the hit indie web series The Guild and star of Joss Whedon's summer sitebuster Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Cristian Cussen led off the night, talking about a number of MySpaceTV's successful web series partnerships like Prom Queen, Sorority Forever and Roommates, before getting into what was on the minds of a good chunk of the crowd—how does he find new web series and what are they looking for? He said his team is always...

It's official. Felicia Day is a certified web star. The creator, lead actress and producer of what has become the gold standard for independent web series, The Guild, has redefined what it means to be a star. Some were introduced to her this summer through her standout performance as Penny (she can sing!) in Joss Whedon's summer mega-hit web series Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Still millions more have been with her since her few episodes as Vi on Buffy or even the early days of The Guild. Matt Enlow wrote an excellent piece on Why We Follow Felicia: Analysis of The Guild's Success Story, which summed it up this way: "Above all, Felicia brings savvy and grace to web video. She knows her stuff, hell – she helped invent it." Season 2 of her hit series The Guild premieres today, fresh off the heels of a massive sponsorship and distribution deal with Microsoft and Sprint.

With the end of the writers strike, casting has picked up on some of the pilots ordered before and during the work stoppage.
Tim Peper has been tapped as one of the two leads in the CBS comedy pilot My Best Friend's Girl, and Bernardo De Paula has joined another NBC pilot, the comedy Zip.
On the cable side, Dorian Brown is set as a lead in the ABC Family series Roommates, while Michael Mosley has been added to A&E's drama pilot Danny Fricke.
Girl, from Sony Pictures TV and writer Mike Sikowitz, is a multicamera comedy about two male best friends who own a bike shop and whose relationship becomes complicated when one (Peper) starts dating the other's ex-wife.
Zip, also from UMS, centers on Trip Stringer (Steven Weber), a guy with no money living in Beverly Hills who, with the help of his Latino partner, Hugo (De Paula), and a colorful cast of accomplices concoct one scheme after another in the hopes of making it big and securing the glamorous Beverly Hills lifestyle for his three children.

ABC has picked up the light drama pilot The Middleman to series. Also picked up to series is an untitled drama project from 7th Heaven creator Brenda Hampton.
Sources said ABC Family also is ordering to series the pilot Roommates, subject to recasting one of the roles.
Meanwhile, the cable network has opted not to renew the drama series Wildfire beyond the current fourth season.
ABC Family also is said to be high on the pilot Samurai Girl and the sophomore series Lincoln Heights, but no decisions had been made by press time.
All ABC Family orders except the Hampton project are said to be cast pickups, with details about production schedules and launch dates in flux because of the writers strike.
Middleman, from writer-producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, stars Natalie Morales as a twentysomething struggling artist recruited by a secret agency to fight comic book-type villains and Matt Keeslar as the title character, a sci-fi superhero who serves as her guide.
The Hampton project is described as a teen relationship series similar in sensibility to Juno. The show is said to have received a six-episode order.
