Tianna Johnson’s “Obeah” has topped The Brit List, an annual league table of top unproduced screenplays from the U.K.
Established in 2007 and similar to The Black List in the U.S., The Brit List is compiled from recommendations by British production companies, talent agencies, sales companies, financiers, distributors and broadcasters.
The list includes both feature and television screenplays.
Johnson’s urban fantasy drama, which scored fifteen recommendations, tells the story of a woman on the hunt for a serial killer. The teleplay, set in North West London, incorporates indigenous spiritual practices from the Caribbean.
In second place with thirteen recommendations was “Maps” by Jessica Drewett, a sci-fi drama set in an installer mine.
To be included on the list scripts need at least 7 recommendations.
In 2021, 300 scripts were submitted of which 18 received the requisite number of recommendations. Nearly a third were feature scripts. 65% of the list is made up of female writers.

This year’s Brit List of best unproduced UK film and TV scripts is topped by Tianna Johnson’s urban drama series Obeah, which received fifteen recommendations. The North London-set thriller follows a woman on the hunt for a serial killer. Scroll down for the lineup in full.
Close behind with thirteen industry recommendations is sci-fi TV project Maps by Jessi Drewett. The drama follows a woman who assumes a false identity to work in an interstellar mine and save her family from debt.
This year’s lineup includes projects set up with BBC, Heyday, Bad Wolf and Company Pictures, but the two highest-rated scripts are currently without producers.
Inspired by the U.S. Black List, the scripts showcase is compiled each year from recommendations by British production companies, talent agencies, sales companies, financiers, distributors and broadcasters.
In 2021, the bar for inclusion moved higher, with scripts needing a minimum of seven recommendations for inclusion.

Tom Hiddleston will no doubt always be best known for playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Loki, which is hardly surprising when you consider it marked the breakthrough role of his career that brought him worldwide attention, and six of the actor’s eighteen live-action movie appearances to date have seen him suit up as the Asgardian God of Mischief.
McU fans can’t wait to see him return to the small screen in Disney Plus exclusive Loki, but before that, the 39 year-old will be seen in another small screen project from a rival streaming service. Exclusive: It’s a deal that’s been nearly six months in the making, but on Wednesday, Sony Pictures Television finally confirmed it has acquired one of the hottest properties in the British production business.
The Hollywood studio has taken control of Sex Education producer Eleven following what president of international production, Wayne Garvie, described as a “pretty competitive” process earlier this year. We first sniffed the deal in April.
Deadline understands that other groups, including All3Media, were in for Eleven, while there were even rumors that Netflix took a look at the company on the back of Sex Education and upcoming Tom Hiddleston thriller White Stork.
In the end, Garvie’s years-long wooing of Eleven founders Jamie Campbell and Joel Wilson paid off. He first discussed the idea of investing more than six years ago, but Eleven ultimately sold a 20% stake to Channel 4’s Indie Growth Fund.
Then,...

Sony Pictures Television has acquired London-based “Sex Education” producer Eleven.
As previously reported, Sony is believed to have beaten off a number of potential buyers, and has taken a majority stake in the outfit.
The investment in Eleven marks one of the few major M&a deals to have emerged from the last four months, when much of the industry has ground to a standstill due to Covid-19. Tom Manwaring of Helion Partners advised the shareholders of Eleven Film on the transaction.
The deal forms part of a wider expansion drive for Sony Pictures Television, who also own “The Crown” producer Left Bank Pictures, and is diversifying the group’s production portfolio and growing IP. In December 2019, Sony Pictures Television expanded further into children’s programming by acquiring Silvergate Media, and broadening the group’s capability in sports and live entertainment production with the acquisition of Whisper Films in February.

Sony Pictures Television has confirmed what we revealed back in April — that it is investing in Eleven, the British production outfit behind Netflix smash hit Sex Education.
Sony has taken a majority stake in Eleven after a competitive process in which a host of potential suitors showed an interest in the producer, including All3Media. The size of the stake and financial terms were not disclosed.
In completing the takeover, Sony is buying out Channel 4’s 20% stake in Eleven. The British broadcaster first invested in the company in 2014 as part of its Indie Growth Fund initiative.
Eleven was founded by creative directors Jamie Campbell and Joel Wilson in 2006, and teen drama Sex Education has become its biggest calling card after launching last year.
Other Eleven commissions include Red Rose, a BBC Three horror created by twins Michael and Paul Clarkson, which has been picked up by Netflix in the U.
