When Netflix launched "The Witcher" back in 2019, it was the streamer's attempt to kickoff a big fantasy franchise on the level with "Game of Thrones" or "Lord of the Rings." The move made sense. After all, not only are the "Witcher" video games very popular, but the Andrzej Sapkowski books they're based on offer a unique and different perspective on fantasy than other mainstream titles thanks to their Slavic mythology influence. This means the "Witcher" TV series and its spinoffs have a lot of rich source material to take inspiration from and change as they deem fit (something the main "Witcher" show has done a lot in the past). Netflix's "The Witcher" was also a huge hit, with the first season gifting us a viral hit song in "Toss a Coin to Your Witcher."

It didn’t take long for Netflix’s The Witcher to become a fan-favorite TV show, especially thanks to its incredible cast and the source material. The show also resulted in a spin-off film written by Beau DeMayo titled, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. The animated film revolves around Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir, and brings his origin story to the screen.

Upon premiering on Disney Plus, X-Men ’97, a continuation of the iconic X-Men: The Animated Series from the ’90s, became a huge success for Marvel, thanks to Beau DeMayo. DeMayo, who previously served as a writer in The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, hit it out of the park with the animated series, which has been lauded for its impeccable writing and unique art style.
Reasonably, fans have been imploring Disney to rehire Beau DeMayo, who was fired from the show. While the writer hasn’t spoken on the matter yet, he did open up about his input in the acclaimed series.

Beau DeMayo has worked with various different studios for the multiple projects the writer has been part of. Guillermo Del Toro once went on stage to demand respect for animated projects. For a long time, anything shown visually through an animated medium would automatically be assumed to be targeted towards children. Many of the best and most well-thought projects go under the radar simply because of the medium they are used in.

Misconceptions fly around just as fast as rumors do, from cartoons to anime and animated movies in general, all of these were disregarded not because their stories lacked complexity but because of the medium. Netflix was building up their series The Witcher, which is inspired by a series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, to be a major franchise. In addition to the flagship show, they made the anime film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and a prequel mini-series called The Witcher: Blood Origin, with another anime movie called The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep and a couple other spin-offs in the works… but now it looks like it’s all winding down. As The Witcher season 4 heads into production with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia from former star Henry Cavill, Netflix has announced that season 5 will be the end of the show. And while The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is still expected to be released through the streaming service by the end of 2024, Redanian Intelligence and What’s on Netflix have learned that two other spin-offs, one...

Beau DeMayo, the showrunner and executive producer behind Disney+’s upcoming animated series “X-Men ’97,” has been fired ahead of the March 20 premiere, Variety has confirmed.
DeMayo had completed work on Seasons 1 and 2 of “X-Men ’97” ahead of his exit. He will not attend the March 13 Hollywood premiere for the show. His Instagram account, on which he had been previewing artwork and answering fan questions about “X-Men ’97,” has also been deleted.
He wrote and produced “X-Men ’97,” which is a continuation of the popular “X-Men: The Animated Series” that aired on Fox Kids in the ’90s. It is unclear why DeMayo was fired from “X-Men ’97” so close to the premiere, but he will no longer promote the show or be involved with future seasons.
“He did excellent work writing Seasons 1 and 2, and I can’t wait for fans to see the series,” executive producer Brad Winderbaum told Variety.

If you grew up in the '90s, there's no way you could have escaped the cultural impact of "X-Men: The Animated Series." Alongside fellow Fox Kids superhero shows "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Spider-Man," the X-Men's animated adventures represented a true high point for superhero animation at the close of the century. Of course, it helped that the mutant team came armed with one of the most undeniably cool theme songs of all time. But the show itself was, much like the aforementioned Batman and the Spidey cartoons, memorable for not treating kids like dummies and including some pretty mature storylines and themes. As such, "X-Men: The Animated Series" left an indelible mark on kids around the globe with its 1992-'97 run.

There’s a Blade reboot in the works at Marvel Studios that will see the vampire hunter get worked into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there has been some concern that this version of Blade will be watered down in comparison to the R-rated Blade films we got from New Line Cinema a couple decades ago. Netflix has dropped the official trailer for “The Witcher” Season 3. After two seasons of Ciri (Freya Allan) learning sword-fighting and magic from the sidelines, this new look finally shows off her fighting skills.
The front half of Season 3, which will contain the first five episodes, will premiere on June 29. The second half, which will contain Episodes 6-8, will premiere July 27.
“Neutrality, it won’t get you a statue. But it will certainly help in keeping you alive,” Geralt (Henry Cavill) ominously says in the trailer.
The video then cuts between each character showing off what they do best. A black-eyed Geralt cuts down monster after monster as if they’re nothing. Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) summons circles of fire from nowhere. Ciri dodges, weaves, stabs and cast spells, putting her newfound training to the test. As for Jaskier the bard (Joey Batey) and his new haircut, he’s mostly there to make jokes.

The Witcher has captivated fans with its well-paced character-building and converging storylines. And with season 3 on the way, it remains one of Netflix’s most popular shows.
However, it seems the streamer didn’t expect the series to become as successful as it did. Because, in early discussions about the project, Netflix executives suggested making The Witcher a single movie.
‘The Witcher’ is based on a series of books
Many fans may know the concept of The Witcher from the popular video game series. And while the Netflix project shares similarities with the games, both the game and show are actually based on an eight-book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.

Is “The Witcher” in crisis? Among a family of intensely serious fantasy fare, TV’s silly, swearing cousin is struggling through an off-year filled with more dread than anticipation. Season 1 premiered in 2019, Season 2 in 2021, and Season 3 is expected sometime next year, but it’s not the wait that’s getting to fans — it’s the wondering. In October, Netflix announced Liam Hemsworth (“The Expendables 2”) will be taking over the lead role in “The Witcher” Season 4, making the upcoming third season the last with Henry Cavill. Initially, people thought Cavill was trading in his sword for spandex, returning to the DC Universe as Superman. But even when those plans were doused in kryptonite, Cavill isn’t climbing back into the warm baths of “The Witcher.”

The Witcher: Blood Origin, the prequel to popular Netflix series The Witcher, finally has an official release date–and it’s a holiday gift for all fans, with a Christmas Day streaming launch. Meanwhile, the original Witcher – season 3 – is set for a Summer 2023 return. Both release dates were announced during Netflix’s annual Tudum event.
Blood Origin, which was announced back in the summer of 2020, is, according to its official synopsis, “a story lost to time – the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal ‘conjunction of the spheres,’ when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.”
The series stars Sophia Brown as a warrior-turned-musician, Michelle Yeoh as a sword-elf survivor and Laurence O’Fuarain as a man out for revenge.

Since 1979, the TV academy has honored the field of animation by awarding the Best Animated Program Emmy on an annual basis. In its current form, this primetime category allows submissions targeted at audiences aged 13 and above, with series and specials made for younger viewers being relegated to the Children’s and Family Emmys. Since the creation of a separate short form category in 2008, submissions here have also been required to have runtimes in excess of 15 minutes.

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) made history as the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2022 Best Character Voice-Over ballot list below consists of a whopping 222 performances. Seeking a third consecutive victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

There were bound to be a few scenes in this movie that people would recognize and enjoy since Vesemir is by all accounts one of the greatest Witchers in the history of the group and there’s a reason why. What this movie manages to do however is show things that the live-action show hasn’t bothered to delve into, at least not with the kind of deep-dive that this story decided to execute. The life of a Witcher has been stated as being tough, unbearably so in fact, and Nightmare of the Wolf makes that abundantly clear. From the recruitment of

They say that good things are worth the wait, and when it comes to The Witcher, luckily this seems to be the case. The Witcher season two continues the story from the first, and doesn’t slow down at all. This is lucky, as there is a lot of story to cover in the eight episodes, which in the end don’t feel enough.
After the Battle of Sodden, Geralt (Henry Cavill) is dealing with his loss of Yennefer (Anya Chalotra). Now with Ciri (Freya Allan) in tow, he looks for answers as to the mysteries that surround his new companion. While the Witcher goes through his own issues, the world around him becomes a much stranger and dangerous place.
To actually go too deep into what happens in season two would ruin much of the fun of The Witcher, so don’t expect many spoilers here, if any at all.

Netflix’s investment in animation has paid off in a big way, as the streamer picked up a whopping 52 nominations at the 49th Annie Awards. Following behind is Disney, which received 29 bids between its film and TV projects.
Taking place on Feb. 26, 2022 at UCLA’s Royce Hall and presented by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, the Annie Awards recognize excellence in cinema and television.
Netflix picked up nine nominations for “Arcane,” its series based on Riot Games’ online multiplayer game “League of Legends.” The hit film from Sony Pictures Animation “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” earned eight nods, and Netflix’s own limited series “Maya and the Three,” directed by Jorge Gutierrez, has seven.
While Disney lagged behind Netflix for total nominations, the studio’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” led all content with 10 nominations, followed by its studio sibling “Encanto,” which picked up nine.

Sometimes, when you're not too focussed on the minutiae of the Witcher-verse, this series takes on the trappings and tropes of a classic wartime drama.
The Witcher Season 2 Episode 4 is one of those instances where Triss tries to intervene before Ciri goes full-blown child soldier, while Yennefer and Cahir experience the life of fugitive refugees.
War makes heroes out of the most unlikely candidates and Dandelion's ... uh, sorry, Jaskier's turn as elf sympathizer and transporter, Sandpiper, is both a welcome return for the character and the best Wtf moment of the season so far.
One of the most anticipated arrivals is Dijkstra, the Redanian spymaster.
Portrayed by Graham McTavish -- a Witcher double-dipper, having voiced Vesemir's mentor Deglan on the animated prequel feature, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf -- Dijkstra is a genius strategist whose mental projections outpace his ability to communicate them.
Even traitors speak the truth.

Elves! Tree monsters! An actual witch! (Maybe? -ish?)
The Witcher Season 2 Episode 2 introduces several new players to the game board, which may eventually connect the Nifgaardian conflict to the Wild Hunt and the Continent's potential end-of-days.
Of the newcomers, I'm most intrigued by the creature in the hut, known as Voleth Meir (according to casting announcements made in April.) Not only does she wield incredible skills, but she also offers compacts like the devils of cautionary folktales.
Voleth Meir presents like Baba Yaga, living in the hut on legs, and behaves like Freddy Krueger, haunting her victims in their dreams.
She zeroes in specifically on the victim's deepest desires.
For Fringilla, that's righteous authority. She is a true believer in the White Flame of Nilfgaard, and Voleth Meir appears to her in the form of Emhyr var Emreis. Her dream of self-determination is understandable as she's spent her life being a pawn for Aretuza,...

Netflix has handed an early renewal to the widely popular series The Witcher, greenlighting Season 3 months before Season 2 drops in December.
The streamer unveiled a slew of The Witcher news at its virtual fan event Tudum on Saturday. The Witcher, which was one of Netflix’s most popular shows of 2019, stars Henry Cavill as the grim Geralt of Rivia, the bane of supernatural beasties, in a story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified.
Set to debut on December 17, The Witcher Season 2 will follow Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia who, convinced that Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) died at the gruesome Battle of Sodden, seeks to bring Princess Cirilla (Freya Allan) to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen.

“The Witcher” franchise took over the last stretch of Saturday’s Netflix promotional marathon “Tudum: A Netflix Global Fan Event,” and fans were met with a ton of updates about the adventures of Geralt and his Witcher brethren.
Among the announcements, the main “Witcher” series has been renewed for a third season, ahead of the launch of Season 2 later this year.
Then, two new clips from Season 2 were shared, featuring a look at Kristofer Hivju’s monstrous character Nivellen and Ciri, played by Freya Allan.
From there, Netflix dropped the first behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming prequel series, “The Witcher: Blood Origin,” which will follow the creation of the first Witcher prototype, as well as trace the events leading up to the “Conjunction of the Spheres:”

Han Kwang-Il knows what fans want. Audiences watch “The Witcher” because we want to see our hero go on a colorful quest, perhaps while fighting monsters, not for the dreary goings-ons of medieval life. Yet, the 2019 series “The Witcher” was heavy on the goings-ons, with only one bright spot in the entire show: Henry Cavill’s blonde wig. Kwang knows where that show went wrong, and offers a spectacle drenched in action, adventure, apologue and atmosphere.

This article contains major spoilers for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf
There are many good reasons why The Witcher doesn’t feature Geralt of Rivia beheading a vampire and then quipping, “Fangs for the memories.” His sense of humor is more cutting and direct, definitely not as snarky as when his mentor Vesemir fights the leshen in the opening scene of Netflix’s animated spinoff, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. That difference may partly be explained by the movie’s ending, which enlightened fans about a number of worldbuilding details that cross over into the main series.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf presents an interesting dilemma in its premise: if the profession were more common, then there would be more competition for monsters to kill in order to earn a living. In the present time of the movie, Vesemir has made a lucrative haul before heading to Kaer Morhen,...

The Witcher has been a long-running franchise in the fantasy fandom. It was first a series of novels and short stories which spawned a series of popular graphic novels. In 2001, the idea was adapted into a film and TV series as The Hexer, and a series of board games were launched.
However, what really propelled its popularity has been the trilogy of video games developed by CD Projekt Red in 2007. With that in the collective consciousness, it was only a matter of time before a series like Netflix's The Witcher, featuring Henry Cavill, became a reality.
With a second season premiering in Dec 2021, Netflix is dropping a tantalizing animated feature that provides considerable backstory, and world-building for the world Cavill's Geralt introduced us to.
As a quick refresher, Geralt of Rivia, Cavill's character and the titular star of the live-action series, is one of the last witchers, monster hunters with supernaturally enhanced abilities.

Although it’s common for any show to shift its characters into new arcs from year to year, The Witcher season 2 is about to completely alter the lives portrayed on screen for a couple of its most important characters. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich spoke to reporters along with Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan, who play Yennefer and Ciri, about how massively different the two women will be in the coming chapter, especially when compared to the seemingly unchangeable titular character, Geralt of Rivia.
Viewers could be forgiven, in fact, for thinking the powerful sorceress Yennefer had died at the end of The Witcher season 1 when she sacrificed everything to defeat the Nilfgaardian army. “After her victory at the Battle of Sodden, she’s captured,” Chalotra reveals. “Her whereabouts are unknown and she has to survive being a prisoner of war… She goes back to Aretuza and she has to navigate...

As confusing as the fractured timeline of The Witcher‘s first season could be, one advantage it offered was an immediate sense that the show’s fantasy universe had history and scope — that it contained other times or places or people who might be worth exploring beyond their relevance to our protagonists.
