Thomas Althouse is an actual person, a U.S. citizen and a human being who creates art, screenplays, and stage-plays. His birthdate is July 2, 1959 (although up until recently, the government computer records were in error, at July 22, 1959). He lives in Pennsylvania currently and of his own accord, he is available for interviews and discussions about his life story.
It is emphatically not a fiction. However that does not mean it proves everything that the characters are declaring (the jury is still out on that). The movie is based upon a true life story, the recollections of Thomas Althouse and others. It revolves around the untold story of the making of The Matrix franchise; not in the sense of the production, but in the sense of the creation of the script, where it comes from, what's the impetus. This movie is therefore a documentary because it uses facts in a primary way. It is a documentary because it presents archival footage and photographs as well as legal documents. In addition to documentary, the movie can also be classified as a biopic, the biography of an individual with necessary reenactments.
