This week, the most-watched YouTube video in Korea is by the girl group aespa (에스파) with their hit song ‘Supernova.’ This track has quickly become a sensation in Korea and, like much of K-pop, is poised to take the rest of the world by storm.
Aespa consists of four members: two Koreans, one Japanese, and one Chinese. Since their debut in 2019, they’ve been enchanting us with their music. The group’s name, “aespa,” is a combination of “æ,” which stands for “Avatar X Experience,” and the English word “aspect,” representing a duality. The name reflects their unique concept of meeting avatars and experiencing a new world.
Earlier this year in April, aespa pre-released the single “Illusion,” and they will be dropping their second mini-album titled “Girls” in June, alongside their second album “Life’s Too Short.” Additionally, aespa has joined the ranks of Warner Records, becoming the first K-pop group signed by the American label.

When most cinephiles think of Francis Ford Coppola, they think of his miracle run in the 1970s. During that decade, he directed four films, all of them five-star masterpieces: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather, Part II, and Apocalypse Now. Or they think of embarrassments from his for-hire period, including the Robin Williams weepy Jack. Yet those five films hardly encapsulate the entire career of Francis Ford Coppola, which will likely end with the upcoming Megalopolis. Instead the best indication of Coppola as an artist and filmmaker might be found in the most recent movies he’s made, with Coppola having released three self-produced and self-financed pictures every two years between 2007 and 2011: Youth Without Youth, Twixt, and Tetro.
Although they vary in quality, and none top his work from the ’70s, this independent trio captures the experimental and romantic heart that lies at the center of Coppola’s overall oeuvre.

‘Citadel’ actor Stanley Tucci has insisted it’s “fine” for straight actors to play gay roles. The 62-year-old actor – who is married to Emily Blunt’s sister Felicity – famously played gay characters in 2006’s ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and 2020 movie ‘Supernova’.
He told BBC Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Discs’: “You’re suppose to play different people. You just are. That’s the whole point of it. Obviously, I believe that’s fine.”
Stanley noted that he gets plenty of gay men approaching him to talk about the films and praising him for taking on the roles “in the right way”, reports ‘Female First UK’.
He added: “I am always very flattered when gay men come up to me and talk to me about ‘The Devil Wears’ Prada or they talk about ‘Supernova’, and they say that, ‘It was just so beautiful’, you know, ‘You did it the right way’. Because often,...

Stanley Tucci spoke up in defense of straight actors playing gay characters, so long as it’s done “the right way,” and doesn’t slip into stereotypes, during an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s “Desert Island Discs” program.
Tucci, who is straight, has played a handful of gay characters over the course of his career. Most recently, he and Colin Firth co-starred in Harry Macqueen’s Supernova, a romantic drama about a gay couple who take a road trip after Tucci’s character is diagnosed with onset dementia. His...

Although he’s been in a heterosexual marriage for over a decade, Stanley Tucci has a bit of a reputation for playing gay characters. Speaking in a recent interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs show, the actor doubled-down that he thinks it’s “fine” for straight actors to take on queer roles — as long as they’re done “the right way.”

As “Super Nova” eloquently expressed, Baek Seung-kee is definitely an unusual director with his episodic filmmaking moving into many directions, usually with a sense of (self) parodying humor. His approach finds its apogee in “Jango: Uncharged”
“Jango: Uncharged” is screening at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival
As flashbacks throughout the movie show, Jango is a poor man who wants to be a director, but is stuck in doing delivery work with his sister Juju, who wants to be a movie star. Jango saves money in order to make a movie but eventually has to give a lot of money to his sister, in order for her to join a famous entertainment agency. As his debt increases, he finds himself enslaved and about to move into a slave camp. That is when Dr Salt appears and buys him out while riding in a horse that is obviously a man dressed in a horse costume.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

“Forest,” an Italian eco-themed animation film about deforestation, has scored some strong pre-sales for Rome-based True Colours at the Cannes Marché du film.
The still-in-production 3-D animation feature – the protagonist of which is a young mushroom named Fey – has been picked up for roughly 20 territories by Top Film Distribution which will distribute “Forest” in Ukraine, Cis, the Baltics, and Eastern European countries including former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Poland, Czech and Slovak Republics, Romania, and Hungary.
Helmed by Luca Della Grotta and Francesco Dafano, the film is produced by Italy’s Al One, the same team that previously spawned 2020 similarly themed animation feature “Trash” that sold in more than 30 countries.
“Forest” – which is the first animation title on the True Colours slate and a rare case of an Italian animation feature film – was presented last year as an in-development project at specialized co-production platforms including Cartoon Movie in the French city of Bordeaux.

Laetitia Casta will soon appear on the big screen as the former wife of an abusive southern Italian man whom she is accused of murdering in the thriller “A Dark Story,” directed by Italy’s Leonardo D’Agostini.
In “Dark Story” the French star, whose recent credits include “The Crusade” directed by her husband Louis Garrel, plays Carla (first look image above), the ex-wife of Vito Semeraro, a banker who beat her when they were together and is the father of her three children. She is accused of murdering him a few years after they split up.

Sam Fender, Little Simz, and Harry Styles are among the artists shortlisted for the 2022 Mercury Prize.
The shortlist was unveiled in July, comprising 12 albums – from rap and jazz to indie and Cornish folk-rock – that will compete for the coveted award at a ceremony held this September.
This year’s entries are among the most eclectic in recent years. Little Simz is shortlisted for the second time with her critically adored Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, following on from her nod in 2019 for Grey Area.
Rock singer Sam Fender receives his debut nomination for his second LP, Seventeen Going Under, as does pop star Harry Styles, who has been shortlisted for his third studio album, Harry’s House. His record is arguably the most “pure pop” album to be shortlisted since Ed Sheeran’s controversial nomination in 2017.
First-time nominees make up most of this year’s nominees, following last year’s shortlist which included 10 debuts.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you combined Shark Tank with influencer marketing? Karat Financial‘s new series shows us what that concept looks like.
The fintech company, which is known for launching a credit card that is used by many top creators, has debuted a show that helps startups go Supernova. The program gives founders the opportunity to pitch their products to a dragons’ den of YouTube and TikTok stars. Like on Shark Tank, the founders who appear on Supernova are looking to secure support. But in addition to providing straightforward investments, the featured influencers can back the startups they like by coming on board as a “creator partner.”
Karat held its first Supernova event back in April. Encouraged by positive feedback, the financial firm set up another round of pitches in August, and it secured a larger venue with help from sponsor Breeze. Karat then assembled...

If you’ve been waiting to watch Christopher Nolan’s confounding sci-fi thriller “Tenet,” now is the time to finally get to it on your HBO Max watchlist. Nolan’s latest film is one of many movies leaving HBO Max in July, the full list of which you can read below.
Also leaving HBO and HBO Max this month is another Nolan classic, “Inception,” Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” as well as two rom-com favorites “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “You’ve Got Mail.”
If you’re looking to prioritize some selections, “American Gigolo” was Richard Gere’s break-out role — and it would be a good time to watch ahead of the upcoming TV series starring Jon Bernthal.

Liam Gallagher launched his tour in support of his new album, C’Mon You Know, Thursday with a hometown gig in Manchester where the singer performed an Oasis track neither he nor his former band ever played live.
Midway through his Oasis-heavy set at Etihad Stadium — the show featured 12 Oasis tracks on the 22-song setlist — Gallagher whipped out “Roll It Over,” the closer from the band’s 2000 LP Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, and a song that had never been performed live by any member of Oasis since its release 22 years ago.

Matt Reeves' "The Batman" is easily the most-hyped event film to hit theaters in 2022 so far (sorry "Uncharted"). As such, it's only natural that Paramount Pictures would try and ride on the DC movie's coattails by releasing a new trailer for "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" that explicitly name-drops "The Bat."
Titled "Blue Justice," the promo starts with Sonic (Ben Schwartz) doing his best growly Bat-voice while narrating over shots of police cars pursuing a van full of armed criminals in a vast metropolis at night. "I have been called many names. Vengeance. The Spiky Supernova. But you may call me...

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired North American rights to “True Things,” Harry Wootliff‘s critically acclaimed sophomore film headlined by “The Affair” star Ruth Wilson and Tom Burke.
The psychological drama world premiered at this year’s Venice and went on to play at Toronto and London film festivals. It marks Wootliff’s follow-up to her BAFTA-nominated and BIFA-winning romantic drama “Only You,” which starred Laia Costa and Josh O’Connor.
“True Things” is an adaptation of Deborah Kay Davies’ book “True Things About Me,” based on a script by Wootliff and Molly Davies.
Wilson stars as Kate, a woman who is sleep-walking through life when a chance sexual encounter with a charismatic stranger awakens her. High on infatuation, what follows is an intoxicating car crash.

Updated, 6:50 Pm: Stanley Tucci has shed new light on his battle with cancer, describing in great detail how it impacted his work on CNN culinary series, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy.
The Oscar-nominated actor’s comments came in an interview with the New York Times published Saturday. In it, he explains how his recovery affected his ability to savor the very dishes he aimed to exalt with his Emmy-nominated travel docuseries, noting that “horrible” radiation treatments resulted in vertigo and mouth ulcers, along with a loss of appetite.
Tucci said that after three sessions of radiation, all food tasted to him like cardboard “slathered with someone’s excremement.” Throughout his recovery, his greatest fear wasn’t death, but rather the prospect of a life without taste. “I mean, if you can’t eat and enjoy food, how are you going to enjoy everything else?” he wondered.

In a new interview, Stanley Tucci shared that he was diagnosed with cancer and underwent successful treatment three years ago.
The actor told Vera that doctors discovered a large tumor at the base of his tongue. “It was too big to operate, so they had to do high-dose radiation and chemo. I’d vowed I’d never do anything like that, because my first wife died of cancer, and to watch her go through those treatments for years was horrible,” he said, referring to Kate Spath-Tucci, who died in 2009.
“The kids were great, but it was hard for them,” he said. “I had a feeding tube for six months. I could barely make it to the twins’ high school graduation.” Tucci is a father of five: he has three children from his marriage to Spath-Tucci, and two younger children with Felicity Blunt, his wife since 2012.
Tucci said that his cancer is unlikely to come back.
