Adam Wingard’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” has already proven to be the biggest box office success of the current pandemic era. For the 38-year-old filmmaker, it’s a radical new chapter after his initial foray into the studio arena, when the response to his 2016 Lionsgate-backed “The Blair Witch Project” sequel left Wingard uncertain if he’d make another studio movie again.
The found footage project wasn’t a total bust — “Blair Witch” made a healthy $45 million compared to its $5 million budget — but it wasn’t the cash cow Lionsgate anticipated after the massive success of the original film. After its disappointing first weekend and mostly tepid reviews, Wingard and writer and frequent collaborator Simon Barrett took to Twitter to lament the film’s chilly reception, with some cheeky jabs at the weekend’s big winner, Clint Eastwood’s Tom Hanks-starring “Sully.” Wingard first tweeted, “Ya win some. Ya lose some,...

Watching the evolution of Adam Wingard’s career over the years has been a lot of fun for this writer, as he’s navigated the waters of low-budget/high-ambition genre projects like Pop Skull and Home Sick to his work on notable indie horror fare like A Horrible Way to Die as well as the first two V/H/S films to other fan favorites like You’re Next and The Guest, and he even had the chutzpah to take on Blair Witch back in 2016 as well (a film that I rewatch every Halloween season and still adore). And while Wingard has never been a filmmaker to shy away from a challenge, his latest project—Godzilla vs. Kong—is easily his most ambitious effort to date.

Indie horror wunderkind Adam Wingard has signed on to direct the next blockbuster in Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s growing monster franchise, “Godzilla Vs. Kong.”
Quite prolific at 34-years-old, Wingard cut his teeth on micro-budget horrors “Pop Skull” and “A Horrible Way to Die,” often working with indie mainstay Joe Swanberg. His more recent film, “The Guest,” starred Dan Stevens and premiered at Sundance in 2014. He has been moving into bigger budget indies with his last two projects, a 2016 follow-up to “Blair Witch,” and “Death Note,” a manga adaptation set for an August release.

We know Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as the Kingslayer on “Game Of Thrones,” but he’s a versatile actor with a lot of range and even good comedic timing – which works perfectly for the new humorous crime thriller, “Small Crimes.”
The picture is the sophomore effort by Evan Katz, the director behind genre fave “Cheap Thrills.” Katz has collaborated with acclaimed director Adam Wingard on several features, including “Pop Skull, as well as with Jim Mickle as a screenwriter/producer on his Sundance channel TV-series, “Hap And Leonard.” Alongside Coster-Waldau, the movie co-stars Jacki Weaver, Robert Forster, Gary Cole, Molly Parker, Macon Blair, and “Cheap Thrills” lead Pat Healy.

When I reviewed the original The Blair Witch Project, it was March of 1999. I saw it in Austin, in the apartment of a couple of my friends, thanks to Harry Knowles, who had been sent a VHS copy of the film by the filmmakers during its Sundance run. I went to Austin in February, and Harry had been sitting on his copy, waiting for us to get to town. We were there for the third Quentin Tarantino film festival at the still-young Alamo Drafthouse, and on the last night of the festival, my friends and I were set to hit the road as soon as the movies ended. We were road-tripping, and between the four of us, we figured we’d be able to do the entire drive back to La straight through with no stops for sleep. Harry asked us not to leave town right after the film, though.

With films such as Home Sick, Pop Skull and A Horrible Way to Die, and more recently, You’re Next and The Guest, Adam Wingard has established a reputation as one of the most inventive filmmakers working in the horror genre today. Wingard’s latest film, The Woods, tackles the found footage sub-genre and we’re bracing ourselves for maximum scares. Written by Simon Barrett (The Guest, You’re Next), The Woods involves a group of college students on a camping trip who discover they are not alone. The trailer (above) reveals little in terms of plot, but surely succeeds at setting the creepy tone. On Twitter, Wingard boasted that The Woods “is my first full on […]...

No, this is not about cold medicine (for that see Pop Skull) and it looks like it took a few pages from Equilibrium. Billed as a "A sub-atomic fight for the subconscious", Dxm has received very little press even though indiewire debuted a trailer back in May and it just premiered at Grimmfest in Manchester. Someone send me a screener, it looks incredible!

Over the course of the last decade, filmmaker Adam Wingard has risen to prominence among genre fans, for his short films in the horror anthologies V/H/S and V/H/S 2, as well as full length features such as Pop Skull and You’re Next. Many were thus excited to learn that Wingard was beginning work on a new feature, his first full-length film since 2011. Titled The Guest, Wingard takes on directing duties, with Simon Barrett writing the screenplay, and a cast that includes Dan Stevens, Joel David Moore, Lance Reddick, and Maika Monroe. The first trailer for the film has now been released, and can be seen below. Sound on Sight was able to see the film at SXSW 2014, and our review can be read here.

Sundance’s Trevor Groth has a special place in his cinephile heart for Adam Wingard’s filmic output – allowing the filmmaker to present the V/H/S omnibus series (V/H/S and the festival titled S-vhs) in back to back years. Production on The Guest began in August, which is pretty much the cut off date for late entries at the fest. We haven’t thrown in the towel yet on the Pop Skull (2007) / You’re Next (2013) director making it three for three. The recent concept artwork (tagline says it all) is a positive sign, but seeing that this “action thriller” is larger in budget chances are indeed slim for a January fest showing. Downtown Abbey‘s Dan Stevens toplines with a supporting cast comprised of Sheila Kelley, Leland Orser, Brendan Meyer and Maika Monroe (At Any Price).

If you’re in the mood for something really scary — and maybe a little off beat — to watch this Halloween, you’re in luck! A terrific crop of wickedly frightening and ghoulishly grotesque horror flicks that terrorized the underground film circuit have made their way to your favorite VOD streaming service just in time for this All Hallow’s Eve.

How crazy would you be prepared to get for $50? What about $500? What about a quarter of a million dollars? Such questions form the dramatic spine of the booze- and drugs-fueled black comedy Cheap Thrills, which is screening at this year’s Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Anchorman star David Koechner and Sara Paxton play a rich couple who challenge a pair of much poorer new acquaintances — portrayed by Pat Healy and Can’t Hardly Wait actor Ethan Embry — to complete a series of ever more out-there challenges for increasing amounts of cheddar.

Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

While at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival, Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down and chat with You're Next filmmaker Adam Wingard the day after the film's hugely successful first screening in Austin.
Written by Simon Barrett, You're Next (review) centers around a family reunion gone horribly awry after the family becomes targeted by masked murderers who crash the party. As it turns out, their only hope to make it out alive is Erin (Sharni Vinson), the Australian girlfriend to one of the family's sons whose experience living as a survivalist in the Outback turns out to be very handy against the mysterious killers who will stop at nothing until everyone is dead.
You're Next also stars Aj Bowen, Barbara Crampton, Joe Swanberg, Wendy Glenn, Ti West and Amy Seimetz and will be arriving in theaters August 23rd courtesy of Lionsgate.

“This year, we wanted to make people laugh before we made them squirm,” New Artists founder/producer Gabe Cowan tells Fango. “Both films are funny and intense, and defy genre in their own ways.”
Milo stars Gillian Jacobs, Ken Marino and genre regular Peter Stormare. Marino plays Ducan, a man whose stomach issues prove to be much more than irritable bowel syndrome: A demon child is inhabiting his intestines. How’s that for nausea inducing? Jacobs plays Sarah, Ken’s stressful wife, and Stormare is his therapist Highsmith. This is the first feature from director Jacob Vaughan since 2006’s narrative-bending Cassidy Kids; this time, he teamed up with writer Benjamin Hayes (True Blood, Angel Of Death) for the Milo script, so it’s certain to be equal parts blood and camp. The producing team is comprised of Cowan and longtime producing partner/New Artists co-founder John Suits, along with the Duplass brothers and Adele Romanski.

Magnet has released Tony Moore's comic-style one-sheet for V/H/S (review here), and we have this beauty right here for you to dig on. This could be our favorite one yet.
In a truly genius move Magnolia created a series of five posters with all-star artists similar to how the films used multiple all-star genre directors for its five segments. The artist lineup includes James Stokoe, R.M. Guera, Jason Latour, Esad Ribic and Tony Moore.
The one-sheet below is inspired by Radio Silence's segment, "10/31/98."

The last horror film we can really remember making any sort of waves in the film community was April’s excellent “Cabin in the Woods,” which was able to deconstruct many of the genre’s tropes while also affectionately playing into them to great success. Since then there’s been a dearth of things that go bump in the night at the cinema, with the Johnny Depp-starring “Dark Shadows” doing little to excite, and even a few independent features making their way to arthouses or Video On Demand.
Well, hopefully the tide is about to turn, with Sundance favorite “V/H/S” checking in with a terrifying little red band trailer as it makes its way to theaters in the fall. We found it to be “a solidly delivered horror anthology that brings the thrills” when our writer caught it in Park City, and the trailer certainly hews close to that assessment.
