- Ballet costumes are tight and slightly revealing thoughout the movie.
- Li shares a passionate moment with his girlfriend, kissing and caressing her. She says she is a virgin, and tries to explain to him what sex is (he doesn't speak good English). She explains it is a man and woman making a baby.
- The final performance involves Li dancing in a brief costume, with another woman in tight clothing.

- In training, Li undergoes physical pain to become a dancer. He hurts himself often.
- Li has a dream that his entire family is arrested by Communist forces and shot to death. (We see a gun pointed at his mom's head, then the scene cuts)

- In America, Li is worried that the Chinese government is still watching his every move.
