Haven’t had enough Glen Powell yet? Well don’t worry, the “Anyone but You” and “Hit Man” star will be back on the big screen soon enough with “Minari” director Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters.” Coming to theaters July 19, “Twisters” is a sequel to the 1996 disaster film and box office bonanza “Twister,” but features a new, young cast headed by Powell and including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Brandon Perea, and Anthony Ramos. To tease the upcoming blockbuster, all four actors sat down with Fandango to discuss the making of the film and the level of authenticity sought through practical effects.
“There’s a sequence in the movie that I think is going to be one of the most incredible action sequences of all time,” Powell said. “It all happens in a oner and I think that we shot that in December with a rain machine. One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced,...

Glen Powell has promised 'Twisters' features “one of the most incredible action sequences of all time”.The 'Top Gun: Maverick' actor teased the storm footage in the upcoming blockbuster "all happens in a oner" and he was "hit by debris" and got soaked through when he had to go and film the scene with the stunt cast.Speaking in the 'Fandango's Big Ticket' interview, he said: “We shot that in December, with a rain machine. One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced, getting dragged across a pool by a wire. I think it was the most physical thing that I’ve ever done.“You’re talking about humans getting sucked up into a tornado. But you’re recreating what it’s like to be getting hit by debris and all that stuff. So you’re watching real stuntmen getting sucked up into the sky,...

Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters sequel will receive its Italian premiere at this year’s Taormina Film Festival, which takes place July 12 to July 19 in southern Italy.
Twisters will screen at the festival’s historic Teatro Antico amphitheater. This year’s event will mark the festival’s 70th edition. The film will be released in Italian theatres on July 17 via Warner Bros. Pictures and will hit North American cinemas on July 19 via Universal Pictures.
“I am grateful to Warner Bros. for this wonderful gift, which confirms one of our programming guidelines: relying on diversity of styles,” said Marco Müller, artistic director of the Taormina Film Festival. “With Twisters, Lee Isaac Chung has gone from his Academy Award-winning drama Minari to deliver a spectacular cinematic event speaking to an even wider audience.”
Twisters is billed as “a sweeping current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster.” The film stars Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser, and Glen Powell who plays Tyler Owens, a charming and reckless social media superstar. The synopsis reads: Two opposing forces, come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.
The cast also features Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos (In The Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), Golden Globe awardee Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy), and Sasha Lane (American Honey), along with David Corenswet (the upcoming Superman), Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Nik Dodani (Atypical).
Producers are Frank Marshall (the Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones franchises) and Patrick Crowley (the Jurassic Park and Bourne franchises). The film was written by Mark L. Smith, screenwriter of The Revenant, from a story by Joseph Kosinski, based on characters created by Michael Crichton & Anne-Marie Martin.
The Taormina Film Festival is promoted and organised by the Fondazione Taormina Arte Sicilia with the support of the Assessorato del Turismo dello Sport e dello Spettacolo della Regione Siciliana of the Sicilia Film Commission, the Municipality of Taormina and the Ministry of Culture–General Directorate for Cinema and Audiovisual (MiC).

Lee Isaac Chung exposed the cast of 'Twisters' to the elements during filming for the disaster movie. The 45-year-old director has helmed the sequel to the 1996 tornado flick 'Twister' and pushed the stars – including Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones – to the limit to ensure the film was "as practical as possible".Lee told Empire magazine: "This is an elemental story, so I wanted us to go as practical as possible."We really tore things up. We had jet engines blowing. We had fans so massive you'd lose your hearing without earplugs. We were pelting our cast with everything – dirt, wind, ice."Chung also explained that the picture was shot during tornado season in Oklahoma which increased the complexity of the production. The 'Minari' filmmaker said: "It was tough. The unpredictability of the weather caused a lot of issues and delays."It was my choice...

Korean Oscar-winning actor Youn Yuh-jung has been the focus of attention for the past week as the subject of a retrospective series at The Academy Museum in Los Angeles.
Youn came to the attention of many late in her career playing the grandmother role in Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari.” But her entertainment history dates back to one of Korean cinema’s golden eras and a screen-scorching 1971 debut in legendary director Kim Ki-young’s “Woman of Fire.”
“Youn refused to compromise her practice to serve the patriarchal systems which dominate the majority of mainstream cinema in Korea. As an iconic figure and role model to many actors in Korea, Youn continues to push boundaries in her incredible scope of storytelling, routed through her bold and forthright perception of each character she portrays,” says the Academy’s notes to the seven-film series.

Digital media is convenient, storage efficient, and easy to access. However, there’s nothing quite like the real thing. As a collector of physical media (much to the distress of my shelving units), I love slipping a new Blu-ray, vinyl, video game, graphic novel, or book onto the shelf. That satisfying sound when you hear the media slide into place. It’s a chef’s kiss. Thankfully, A24 knows the value of physical media, so they’re partnering with the publishing house Mack to bring its screenplay collections to stores worldwide.
The union between A24 and Mack is the first of its kind. The partnership will see A24’s existing line of film, TV, and creator-driven books sold in bookstores globally from September, distributed via Mack’s network in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Steven Yeun has done quite well for himself since parting ways with the land of the Walkers. From earning an Oscar nod in 2021 to becoming the first Asian actor to win a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a limited series, the actor has been successful in building an impeccable resume.
But before earning acclaim for his versatility, the actor initially rose to prominence following his portrayal of fan-favorite Glenn in AMC’s The Walking Dead Series. Although in hindsight, leaving the show back in 2016 turned out to be a wise choice for Yeun, the decision wasn’t easy for the actor.

After months of waiting, fans finally got to witness the continuation of the season 6 finale’s cliffhanger in The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be, which saw Glenn taking a baseball bat to the head.

Steven Spielberg’s production company Amblin Entertainment was one of the production companies that backed up the 1996 film Twister. The hit disaster thriller starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, and Cary Elwes introduced storm chasers trying to contain a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma. Spielberg also served as an executive producer (EP) on the film.

Many years later, Spielberg is also an EP on the standalone sequel Twisters which is coming soon to theatres. The film stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos. It's been 28 years since Jan De Bont's "Twister" ripped through theaters and whipped up a $496 million worldwide gross. In the meantime, it's become a weekend cable mainstay, where viewers can tune out its wafer-thin plot and simply enjoy the foul weather spectacle. It's far from a classic, but its visual prowess is undeniable, and its colorful cast of storm chasers led by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt seem to be having a ball. Any film that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Jami Gertz, Todd Field, and Lois Smith is bound to be fun on some level.
So why has it taken so long for Universal to make a sequel to the second-highest-grossing film (domestically) of 1996?
"Twisters" didn't exactly have a stormy development process, but it did go through a couple of iterations over the last four years. Joseph Kosinski was attached to direct in early 2020. When that fell through,...

The film will be directed and co-written by Andrew Ahn. Focus Features founder James Schamus, who co-wrote the original film with Lee, will again serve as co-writer. Yang previously worked with Ahn on the 2022 film Fire Island.

Who says this summer is light on blockbuster fare, despite the strikes holding productions and release dates up?
Big movies coming to theaters in the next hot few months include favorite IP getting a 2024 burnish, from “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” to “Alien: Romulus” and “Twisters”. Oh, and a little movie called “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (May 24), which George Miller will first bring to the Cannes Film Festival before opening it in theaters later that month. Plus, poised to be a Netflix hit this summer is Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” (May 24 in theaters), playing for a couple of weeks in select cities before the crime comedy starring Glen Powell hits the streaming platform.
But those bigger-ticket titles aside, summer 2024 is a time for indies to shine, from Annie Baker’s long-awaited festival hit “Janet Planet” (June 14) to India Donaldson’s wonderful Sundance premiere “Good One” (August...

Kim Ki-young will be forever remembered for one of the undeniable Korean masterpieces, 1960's “The Housemaid”. Recently, however, and particularly after Youn Yuh-jung won the Oscar for “Minari”, much light was shed to some of his previous works that included her in the starring roles, “Woman of Fire” and “Insect Woman”, both well accepted films that featured a narrative similar to that of “The Housemaid”. On the other hand, “An Experience to Die For”, the third collaboration between the two, was made in 1990 as Kim's last work, but was not released as he is said to have been disappointed with the outcome and decided not to release it. The film was submitted to the censors twice — once in 1990 and again in 1995, but was not screened for the public until the 1998 Busan International Film Festival, following Kim's untimely death in a house fire.

Since the tremendous commercial success of the film “Crazy Rich Asians” in 2018, there has been a gradual increase in the number of pictures being produced in America that depict the lives of its Asian citizens. This trend allows for the presentation of the experiences of this over 20 million-strong group of people to a broad audience. Such portrayal can be seen in “Smoking Tigers”, a full-length debut by So Young Shelly Yo. The movie, made by a first-generation Korean-American director, screenwriter, and editor from California, was praised by critics and received several awards, including for the Best Performance, the Best Screenplay, and the Nora Ephron Award at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones have somehow found a way to make relentless natural destruction sexy.
The leads of “Twisters,” along with costar Anthony Ramos, showed up onstage at the annual movie theater owners gathering CinemaCon to offer a first look at the sequel to the 1996 adventure film “Twister,” which starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton.
The chemistry between the “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Normal People” stars was palpable. The exhibitors ate up Powell as a cocky “tornado wrangler” fond of strutting in wet t-shirts and pushing an absurdly tricked-out pickup truck. The actors were also open about their intense filming conditions, saying they shot in 120-degree heat, got hit with a jet engine, smothered with hay, had a water tank dumped on them, got pelted by ice, were covered in trash and dragged by wires.
While Powell and Edgar-Jones are proven box office draws, the ensemble cast...

By taking home the 2024 Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy blazed a trail as the first Irish-born lead performer ever honored by the film academy. Prior to his victory, there had not been a native Irish acting winner in over 30 years nor any from his city of Cork, as the only earlier examples had involved supporting winners and fellow Dubliners Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker. His historic achievement brings the total number of different countries that have produced acting champs during the last decade to eight.
As has been the case throughout practically all of Oscars history, the United States is by far the dominant birthplace among the 2015-2024 acting winners. Of the group’s 37 unique members, 26 (or 70.3%) originate from there, including newly-crowned victors Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Could “Anyone But You” co-stars Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney be the next Julia Roberts and George Clooney? The duo’s work on the past romantic comedy just brought in a record-breaking $200 million worldwide. Thus setting the twosome up as a bankable pair that audiences might be ready to watch fall in (and out) of love over and over.

“When you find somebody that you really jive with, Sydney is so easy to work with and so fun. We’re definitely trying to find the next thing,” Powell said. “Please send us all the scripts you got.

In April 2019, the Academy made a major change to the category formerly known as best foreign-language film. The following March, at the 92nd Academy Awards, Parasite made Oscar history when it became the first non-English film to take best picture — and the first movie to win the Oscar for the newly designated category of best international film.
The decision to rename the category was born out of the Academy’s efforts to diversify its membership and embrace the global filmmaking community. “We believe that ‘international feature film’ better represents this category, and promotes a positive and inclusive view of filmmaking, and the art of film as a universal experience,” Larry Karaszewski and Diane Weyermann, then co-chairs of the international film committee (Weyermann died in 2021), said in a statement.
The Academy has embraced more foreign-language films in its competition — since Parasite’s win in 2020, the best picture category has seen international (or largely non-English) nominees Minari,...

The disaster film Twister (watch it Here) was a massive success for Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and Amblin Entertainment when it was released during the summer movie season in 1996. Made on a budget of $90 million, it earned almost $500 million at the global box office and ranked as the tenth highest-grossing film of all time. Quickly cashing in with a sequel would have made a lot of sense. But while there were rumors – including a memorable one that said the sequel would involve a tornado hitting a major city – a follow-up never made it into production. Until now. Universal and Amblin are reviving the Twister IP with a film called Twisters, which is set to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024. Twenty-eight years later, will it be able to replicate or surpass the success of its predecessor? We’ll have to wait and see. But for know, we’re going to...

This summer, the epic studio disaster movie returns with the adrenaline-pumping, seat-gripping, big-screen thrill ride Twisters, a current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster Twister, that puts you in direct contact with one of nature’s most wondrous—and destructive—forces from the producers of the Jurassic, Bourne and Indiana Jones series.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the Oscar-nominated writer-director of Minari, Twisters stars Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell as opposing forces who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.
Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming...

“Don’t breathe. Don’t look back,” commanded the tagline for the movie Twister from 1996. Apparently, that’s not a warning that Universal Pictures wants to heed. Instead, they’re looking back to the ’90s with a new adventure about storm chasers and the flying cows in their wake with the upcoming sequel Twisters.
That said, first trailer for Twisters features no familiar faces. Not only do we see no characters played by actors who sadly passed in the interim, such as Bill Paxton’s Bill or Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Rusty, but also missing is Helen Hunt’s protagonist Jo.
In their place is a new cast, primarily Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing) as Kate Cooper and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) as Tyler Owens. Based on the trailer, the script by Mark L. Smith focuses on the braggart Tyler luring Kate back into the world of stormchasing after an expedition gone wrong.

Filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung broke out with 2020’s “Minari,” which landed multiple Oscar nominations including two for Chung (Best Director and Best Original Screenplay) and Best Picture. (The film won an Oscar for Yuh-Jung Youn in Best Supporting Actress.) Now, four years later, Chung is back and with an expected follow-up: “Twisters,” a sequel to 1996’s blockbuster hit “Twister.”

You've got to feel a little sorry for Anthony Ramos, who had been presumably looking to ride his Hamilton time into a bigger film career, doing great work in In The Heights and paying his dues in Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts. But here comes the first Twisters trailer, dropped during the Super Bowl, and it's (primarily) all about Glen Powell. See the windy new promo here:
Described as "a current-day chapter" that follows the 1996 disaster movie (no word on whether any of the original cast will cameo or otherwise show up), Twisters follows Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, who used to chase storms, but prefers to study their patterns from a screen in New York following a tragic twister encounter.

“We’ve got twins!”
Those words, delivered with a mixture of terror and excitement, tell viewers all they need to know about the chaos and carnage that a group of storm chasers is about to encounter in “Twisters,” a follow-up to the 1996 box office hit “Twister.” The disaster film aired its first trailer during the Super Bowl. Starring Glen Powell, who plays a self-described “tornado wrangler,” and Daisy Edgar-Jones as a scientist, the film is set for a July 19 release.
Billed as a “new chapter” of the original, the film is directed by Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung, known for his film “Minari,” which shared an agricultural setting and little else with “Twisters.” Along with Powell and Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack and Maura Tierney round out the cast.
Powell is channeling a charismatic daredevil in the first look, declaring, “You don’t face your fears. You ride ’em.

All anybody wants to talk about these days is flooding, winter vortexes, and other natural disasters stemming from the ongoing climate crisis. Well, apparently, the tornado from "Twister" got wind of this (I'm sorry) and is back with a vengeance in the newly unveiled Super Bowl trailer for "Twisters."
Neither a direct follow-up to director Jan de Bont's 1996 natural disaster thriller nor a complete reboot of the franchise, "Twisters" follows a new team of storm chasers as they battle destructive cyclones in the present day. Apparently, at one point, "Twister" star Helen Hunt and "Blindspotting" co-writers/co-stars Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal pitched a proper legacy sequel that, according to Hunt, would've focused on "all Black and Brown storm chasers." However, the studio powers that be didn't go for it for "potentially shady" reasons, as Diggs told Business Insider last year.

Super Bowl Lviii on Sunday night out of Las Vegas brought more than just excitement for 49ers and Chiefs fans: Universal Pictures debuted the first footage from Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters” during the big game. Check it out below.
The Golden Globe-winning director’s first film since “Minari” serves as a follow-up to Jan de Bont’s 1996 original blockbuster about storm chasers in Oklahoma, led by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. “Twisters” is written by Mark L. Smith, the scribe behind “The Revenant” (with Alejandro G. Iñárritu) and director George Clooney’s Netflix sci-fi “The Midnight Sky.” Chung’s film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos, with Universal releasing the picture on July 19, 2024 in the United States.
Plans for a “Twisters” follow-up have been in the works for half a decade, with Helen Hunt pitching a sequel about a diverse set of storm chasers that she said the studio rejected.
