Have you ever wondered about the intricate behind-the-scenes dynamics that can influence the trajectory of a TV show and the careers of those involved? Such is the tale of how Marisa Tomei—known to many as the heartwarming Aunt May in the MCU—faced a fork in her path to stardom after a brief but impactful stint on NBC’s A Different World.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has been allowed a commercial release in the Philippines, following a review by the country’s film censors. However, the scene that shows a controversial map may have to be blurred.
The film was last week banned in Vietnam over its inclusion of a scene with a map alleged to show the ‘nine dash line’ by which China lays claim to nearly all of the South China Sea as its own territory. Vietnam says that China’s claims violate its sovereignty and that films and TV shows must not show the illegal map. On Monday, Vietnam banned Chinese series “Flight to You” for showing the map in multiple episodes.
On Tuesday last week, the Philippines’ Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (Mtrcb) said that it would look into “Barbie,” noting similar concerns.
Distributor Warner Bros. denied that the map shown in the film showed the controversial ‘nine dash line.

The Jewel Thief arrives on July 13 to provide an account of Gerald Blanchard, one of history’s most creative criminals.
But where does the cartoon excitement comes in? Well, that’s because season 11 of Matt Groening’s beloved Futurama premieres on July 24. Fry, Leela, the Professor, and Bender will all return for a direct continuation of...

Former NBA star and social media personality Rex Chapman is the latest media figure to join the growing lineup of hosts at CNN Plus.
Per the WarnerMedia-owned subscription streaming platform, which is set to debut in the first quarter of the year, “Chapman is known for celebrating the highs of college basketball and NBA stardom, rebounding from the lows of opioid addiction and now for his viral social media presence where he shares humor and positivity.”
Chapman’s weekly CNN Plus show isn’t described as a talk show, but rather a program that includes “intimate conversations with athletes, entertainers and everyday heroes as Chapman looks for the silver lining beyond today’s toughest headlines.”
The currently untitled Chapman-hosted show will join the lineup of original series that CNN Plus has set to be available at launch.
Chapman was a basketball legend at the University of Kentucky and a 12-season former NBA star.

Anderson Cooper, the longtime anchor who leads off CNN’s primetime schedule each weeknight, will expand his hosting duties with a new show, “Parental Guidance” on CNN Plus, the streaming-video hub expected to debut in the first quarter of 2022. Cooper will also continue to host “Full Circle,” which will move to the streaming service in 2022.
Cooper will add to the options already announced for the new venue, which aims to lure news aficionados and CNN “superfans” to a new broadband subscription product. CNN has already announced series led by Chris Wallace, Eva Longoria, Kasie Hunt, Scott Galloway and Poppy Harlow.
CNN’s interest in streaming in the past came mainly in ancillary businesses, like Great Big Story, a site devoted to short-form documentaries, and a project with YouTube influencer Casey Neistat. CNN Plus, however, will rely on the news outlet’s full resources and brand, entering a field already crowded by rivals and upstarts.

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

Florida Georgia Line member Brian Kelley’s plan to bring a country-music musical to life as a legit stage production is now extending to a movie version that is being developed simultaneously.
Kelley and his partners announced not just a film iteration of “May We All” — whose planned staging has been put off due to the pandemic — but the director who’s been tapped for a movie version: Andy Fickman, whose credits include directing and exec-producing CBS’ TV series “Kevin Can Wait” as well as a number of feature films and stage productions.
The stage version, announced in Variety in 2019, was set for a developmental production at Memphis’ Playhouse in the Square in fall 2020, to have been followed by an official Nashville premiere in 2021. As lockdowns have pushed any of these stage debuts further back, producers decided to move up a film adaptation.

ABC has given a pilot order to Prospect, a single-camera comedy from I Hate My Teenage Daughter creators Sherry Bilsing-Graham and Ellen Kreamer; prolific director-producer Randall Einhorn; and ABC Studios, where Einhorn is under an overall deal.
This is the first in-cycle comedy pilot by ABC this season. Also heating up for a pickup is Kari Lizer’s comedy script The Village.
Written by Bilsing-Graham and Kreamer and to be directed by Einhorn, Prospect is described as a comedic Western with a feminist twist. An idealistic young woman moves to the frontier to be a schoolteacher, but her ideals quickly are tested when she learns that her students are rowdy ranch hands, not children.
Bilsing-Graham and Kreamer executive produce with Einhorn. ABC Studios is the studio.

Update Dec 26 Am writethru following Christmas Night post: As expected Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker posted the second-best Christmas Day ever at the domestic B.O. with $32M, behind 2015’s holiday record, Force Awakens, which made $49.3M. Industry estimates last night thought it could go as high as $35M, however, Disney has been reporting their actual daily figures for Skywalker at $1M-$3M below what rivals has been estimating. Skywalker also beats the Christmas Day grosses of Last Jedi ($27.4M) and Rogue One ($25.8M) which have the third and fourth best daily totals for the holiday. Skywalker‘s 6-day stands at $258.8M, which is -7% behind Last Jedi over the same period of time. That pic finaled with $620.1M domestic.
All pics according to Comscore grossed $80M yesterday, +2% from last year, but off 23% from 2015’s Christmas Day record when Force Awakens lead all movies to $103.3M.

At the end of a strong year with a five percent uptick in attendance, the post-Christmas box office fell off. With no new “Star Wars” installment, year-end grosses were down around $9 million from $195 million last year.
D.C. Comics’ latest offering “Aquaman” (Warner Bros.) is the easy winner this weekend. Its $51 million is nearly double the second-best “Mary Poppins Returns” (Disney), and its holiday-boosted drop of 23 percent put it in position to be the only December release this year to pass $300 million. Both 2017 movies “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” scored over $400 million.
This comparative weakness to last year means that 2019 will start with a shortfall. M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” (Universal) on January 18 could perform well, but February has to compete with 2018’s massive “Black Panther.”
