Inches before my face are two young rhinos, some of the last of their kind, close enough for me pet them as they eat from the hands of an animal trainer. But what I’m actually seeing is the footage from what looks like an IMAX screen, shrunk to the size of a 23 million-pixel postage stamp.

Ralph Lee, BBC Studios Productions’ CEO, will be leaving the BBC’s commercial arm in April after almost six years to pursue a new challenge outside the organization.
Since being appointed director of content in 2018, “Lee has guided BBC Studios Productions to unrivaled creative recognition – winning 111 awards and 400 nominations in the ’22/’23 financial year alone – and becoming the most awarded production group at the BAFTA and Rts Awards,” BBC Studios said on Thursday.

“It’s like The Hunger Games, the AMPTP thinks they can starve us back to work,” said Bectu National Secretary Spencer MacDonald, as around 200 below-the-line workers gathered in London’s Leicester Square this afternoon to urge a swift end to the actors strike.
MacDonald was bullish, however, in the face of a possible resolution in the coming days, telling studio bosses across the pond: “Every single time, we win these disputes.”
“We need to remind employers that by dragging their heels and digging themselves in all they are doing is digging a bigger hole for themselves,” he added. “And we want to talk about the impact on our membership.”
Although unions in the UK are forbidden to join foreign strikes by tight labor laws, a recent Bectu survey found that an incredible 80% of UK crew felt they had been impacted by what is happening in the States, and Bectu has...

Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for a prehistoric animals adventure series called Life on Our Planet, arriving for streaming later this October. From Executive Producer Steven Spielberg and the Emmy Award-winning team behind Our Planet comes this new series. This is the story of life's epic, four billion-year journey on Earth, told through its ruling dynasties, the underdogs who defied the odds to survive, and the cataclysmic events that reshaped it. Two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve (“Prehistoric Planet”) will compose the score for Sky and Peacock series “The Tattooist of Auschwitz.”
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Heather Morris, the limited series is inspired by the true-life story of Lale and Gita Sokolov. It follows Lale (Jonah Hauer-King), who arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942, where he was made one of the tattooists charged to ink identification numbers onto fellow prisoners’ arms. He meets Gita (Anna Próchniak) when tattooing her prisoner number, and they experience love at first sight. Under constant guard from a volatile SS officer Baretzki (Jonas Nay), Lale and Gita became determined to keep each other alive. Some 60 years later, Lale (Harvey Keitel) meets novice writer Heather Morris (Melanie Lynskey). Recently widowed, Lale finds the courage to tell the world his story.
The six-episode series is produced by Synchronicity Films in association with Sky Studios and All3Media International.

Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, prosthetic makeup artist Barrie Gower, and composers Hans Zimmer, Nicholas Britell and Danny Elfman were among the industry heavyweights who landed Creative Arts Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning.
Four-time Oscar winner Atwood landed her second Emmy nomination in the outstanding contemporary costumes for Tim Burton’s “Wednesday.” Speaking about her work on the show and about recreating the icon Morticia Addams’ costumes, Atwood said, “We reinvented look with this silver fabric on the side, which was bonded to the black, twisted and sewn over. Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

Additionally, Lisa Vanderpump was honored with the Impact Award, while Eugene Levy — who hosts Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy, which won best travel/adventure show — won Star of the Year.

“Prehistoric Planet” is back on Apple TV+ with over two dozen new extinct species to explore. Given the amount of dinosaurs and birds, the biggest challenge for supervising sound editor Jonny Crew was “capturing those prehistoric sounds.”
Without a library of extinct sounds to pull from, Crew, who also worked on the first season, says the trickiest task was distinguishing the sounds of different birds. That’s where chickens helped crack an important moment in the show’s first episode, titled “Islands,” in which audiences are exposed to the behavior of the Hatzegopteryx, a stork-like reptile. A key scene focused on two dinosaurs mating.
“Whether you’re in a rainforest or swamp, the birds are going to sound different, but at that time birds hadn’t properly evolved,” Crew tells Variety. The challenge was capturing the sound of “massive, ferocious creatures having this tender moment together.”

Apple TV+’s groundbreaking Prehistoric Planet will return for season two on May 22, 2023. Ahead of its premiere, the streaming service released the first teaser trailer for the award-winning natural history event series.
Season two will feature dinosaurs that have never been seen on the screen, including:
Isisaurus – An Indian sauropod that made its home in an extreme volcanic region known as the Deccan Traps, laying eggs in volcanic heated terrain. Pectinodon – a fierce hunter and fond parent, this bird-like North American feathered dinosaur was part of the troodontid family. A sharp-clawed, long-legged predator, it was an adaptable hunter, its teeth and jaws suggesting that many sorts of small animals would have been on the menu. Quetzalcoatlus and Hatzegopteryx – The biggest creatures ever to soar the skies, these gargantuan pterosaurs (prehistoric flying reptiles) were the size of a giraffe or small aircraft and are some of “Prehistoric Planet’s” most charismatic characters.

Dinosaur movies tend to be extremely popular at the box office, enough so one would expect them to have a shared universe by this point. Perhaps it's because the "Jurassic Park/World" franchise had held such a vise-like grip on the sub-genre these past 30 years, studios are hesitant to greenlight their own films about giant, prehistoric reptiles walking the Earth. Even when they do, they frequently employ animation to make the dinosaurs a little less daunting (including the carnivorous ones), like in Pixar's "The Good Dinosaur" or Disney's "Dinosaur."
Phooey to that, says Scott Beck and Bryan Woods! The "A Quiet Place" co-writers are ready to make dinosaurs terrifying once more with their new writing and directing effort, "65." The movie stars Adam Driver as a traveler who crash-lands on Earth 65 million years ago, pitting him and the sole other survivor (Ariana Greenblatt) against a whole lot of dinosaurs hankering for a tasty human sandwich.

You know what? Maybe "Jurassic Park" had it all wrong. Who needs to bring dinosaurs to the modern day when we could instead take a trip millions and millions of years back to the prehistoric past and imagine how they would've lived in their own natural environments? Apple TV+ apparently had the same idea with last year's debut of "Prehistoric Planet," the nature documentary series depicting Earth as it would've been in the Cretaceous Period. Spearheaded by Jon Favreau and narrated by the dulcet tones of Sir David Attenborough, the state-of-the-art graphics, up-to-date scientific research, and surprisingly compelling narratives all led to positive reactions all across the board (you can read /Film's review by Sarah Milner here).
Now, the streaming service is gearing up for round two of "Prehistoric Planet." Apple announced that the "epic natural history documentary event" has been greenlit for season 2, which will debut with five episodes...
