Will you pay to watch broadcast TV shows—with ads? CBS bets you will. The network just announced a stand-alone online streaming service called CBS All Access. The service will charge $5.99 a month for full seasons of the network's current daytime and primetime shows, as well as thousands of episodes from CBS' library. The announcement comes the day after HBO surprised the industry by finally announcing a stand-alone streaming service that will debut next year. CBS is betting viewers will pony up for the convenience of streaming its shows anytime, anywhere, as well as access to a vast library of content.

Yesterday, HBO said our a la carte TV future was coming. Today, CBS said that it's already here. A day after HBO announced the vaguest of plans for a standalone streaming service, CBS not only announced specific plans for its own, but launched the thing. You can already sign up for CBS All Access, a subscription service that, for $5.99 a month, will offer the following: * Full seasons of 15 current CBS shows, with new episodes available the day after they air. * The ability to live stream local CBS stations in 14 participating markets — including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver, Sacramento, Pittsburgh and Baltimore, "with more to be added" — with more affiliates allegedly to follow. * Full past seasons of 8 current shows, including "The Good Wife," "Blue Bloods" and "Survivor." * More than 5,000 episodes of classic series from the CBS library, including every episode of "Cheers,...

If you follow along with our DEADtime TV series, in which we review as many currently running horror TV shows as we can, on an episode-by-episode basis, you will know that I am the one that decided to tackle Showtime’s Penny Dreadful. This was a show that turned out to be entirely different than I expected it to be. Penny Dreadful gives new meaning to the term “slow-burning”. If you followed along with my reviews, you will recall that I spent much of it practically begging for something exciting to happen. But, at the end of the day, it started strong, told a strong story, and ended on a strong note. It is a very good show, despite the possibility of turning off some viewers that need to have everything bombard them in the face at a constant rate. I have a feeling that it will be a little more bearable,...

Under the Dome Gets a New Season, Comic-Con Panel Clips Hint at What’s to Come, Plus Blu-ray Details
During the Comic-Con panel for Under the Dome, showrunner Brian K. Vaughan warned that Season 1 “ends with a helluva a cliffhanger, so if we’re not lucky enough to get a ‘next season,’ you guys are just screwed.” Yikes. Well fortunately, that isn’t the case, as CBS today confirmed that it has picked up the show for another season.
We warned you recently that this might be the case, that the show that was marketed at least half-heartedly as a limited series might not actually be a limited series. But wait. American Horror Story is considered a limited series and a continuing series at the same time. And earlier in the panel Vaughan states that we’ll find out the answers about “all the people up here” – meaning ostensibly Mike Vogel (“Barbie”), Dean Norris (“Big Jim”) and Rachelle Lefevre (“Julia”) but that they’ll hold a few secrets about the dome.

CBS chief Les Moonves has said that his company would work with Netflix in other countries. Look out Netflix...The deal brings old series including Star Trek, Frasier, and Cheers to Amazon Prime, increasing its library of streamable movies and TV shows to 8,000. Although the companies aren't talking about the terms, Wells Fargo analyst Marci Ryvicker says it's a "big positive" for CBS. Unlike the two-year deal that CBS cut with Netflix in February, she says the arrangement with Amazon probably just runs for 18 months and would include a payment for each subscriber as well an upfront fee. "These differences make a lot of sense to us given that Amazon is still in a 'build-out' phase when it comes to its streaming TV offering," Ryvicker says in a report. The bottom line: She expects CBS to see $100M in revenue, most of it early in 2012.
