I've got a teaser trailer here for you to check out for an upcoming horror film called Lavender starring Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch, Limitless).
Cornish plays a woman named Jane who loses her memory after a car accident. Her doctor recommends she return to her childhood home to help kickstart her memory, and it's there that she begins to have unpleasant childhood memories and she starts to see unexplained things.
It's a really short trailer and doesn't give us much, but I like what I see. Hopefully it turns out to be a decent horror flick. The movie was written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Ed Gass-Donnelly, who previously made This Beautiful City, Small Town Murder Song, and The Last Exorcism Part II.

I have no doubt that one day gifted visual storyteller Ed Gass-Donnelly will make a brilliant work. With four features under his belt, including This Beautiful City, Small Town Murder Songs, The Last Exorcism Part II and now Lavender, he’s shown tremendous promise capturing haunting images that externalize the internal conflicts, horrors and phobias of their subjects. His latest is a meditative horror film that, despite masterful visual direction and captivating performances, falls back on familiar horror/thriller tropes, courtesy of the screenplay by Gass-Donnelly and Colin Frizzell. Students of the genre will be far ahead, although they may admire the muted, understated style even if you how the blocks will fit together.
Abbie Cornish stars as Jane, a young mother suffering from memory loss following a car accident. She’s haunted by the specter of her past. With an apt and horrifying sequence, young Jane clenches a knife...

The Last Exorcism 2 made an appearance at the annual November gathering in Santa Monica called American Film Market, where buyers and sellers haggle over rights to raise money for the film and to discuss a ton of upcoming projects.
One of the things discussed was the plot summary for next installment of 2010 surprise hit, which is now being titled as The Last Exorcism II: The Beginning of the End. The film has Ashley Bell making her return as Nell Sweetzer, the little girl that was possessed, struggling to put her life back together, but still being pursued by the demon that had possessed her.
Here’s a bit of news regarding the official plot synopsis for the upcoming sequel courtesy of Collider:

Back in January, Eli Roth, who produced the 2010 hit "The Last Exorcism," revealed that a sequel was in the works and was to be shot in February in New Orleans. We knew that Ashley Bell would return to play Nell Sweetzer, the possessed young girl, but now Bloody-Disgusting has a few more details from the new film. The site says: "The sequel follows Nell (Bell) who, six months after the first film's events, has moved to a halfway house only to realize that the demon that has ruined her life is still after her. Without giving anything away, the sequel takes an interesting romantic approach that's focused on Nell's new boyfriend, Chris. A subplot is that Bell is also targeted by a group of rogue Reverends who mean to kill her. The twist is something never before seen in an exorcism film." "The Last Exorcism" director Daniel Stamm didn't return for the sequel.

It's been quite a while since we heard any kind of news regarding the sequel to The Last Exorcism. Up until now, all we really knew was that Ashley Bell was going to reprise her role as Nell Sweetzer. But now we learned from Deadline that Ed Gass-Donnelly, whose credits include This Beautiful City and Small Town Murder Songs, will direct the R-rated follow-up to the 2010 PG-13 pic that grossed $70 million worldwide. Ed Gass-Donnelly ("This Beautiful City," "Small Town Murder Songs") has been hired to direct the R-rated follow-up to the 2010 horror/thriller hit "The Last Exorcism" for Arcade Pictures, Strike Entertainment and Studiocanal says Deadline.
Ashley Bell starred in the $1.5 million-budgeted PG-13 original film which ended up grossing $70 million worldwide. That story centered on a charlatan exorcist facing a crisis of conscience who invites a documentary crew on his final exorcism where he comes across the possessed Nell (Bell).
The sequel will pick up three months after that film left off, although further story details are being kept under wraps. Damien Chazelle penned the script.
Producer Eli Roth says "we want to go deeper and darker this time. The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film, but now we want to go R-rated and show the true horror of what this subject matter offers". Shooting kicks off next month in New Orleans.

Eli Roth's PG-13 horror film "The Last Exorcism" hit theaters in 2010 and grossed $68 million on a budget that was less than $2 million. It also has an impressive 73% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes. So a sequel being in development is not really a surprise. Now comes word that the sequel will begin shooting next month in New Orleans. Daniel Stamm, who directed the first film won't be returning. He's been replaced by Ed Gass-Donnely (This Beautiful City). But that's not the only change that the sequel will undergo. The plan is to take the PG-13 original and give it an R-rated follow-up. "[I'm] very, very excited to continue this story," said Roth. "Obviously with the title of the first one we had not planned on a sequel, but we love the story and subject matter and had what we feel is an inspired idea to continue it. The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film,...

We already knew Ashley Bell would be back for the sequel to The Last Exorcism, and now comes word as to who will be behind the camera barking contortion orders to her: Ed Gass-Donnelly (This Beautiful City, Small Town Murder Songs) has been tapped to direct the R-rated follow-up to the 2010 PG-13 film.
Per Deadline, Eli Roth returns as well, producing via Arcade Pictures, with Eric Newman, Marc Abraham, and Tom Bliss producing via Strike Entertainment. Studiocanal will fully finance and kick off international sales at the European Film Market in Berlin next month.
The sequel is said to pick up three months after the original left off, but of course further details are being kept under wraps. Production is set to begin in February in New Orleans, and delivery is expected for late 2012.

Rodrigo Gudino does not sleep. I'm convinced of it. Between running the Rue Morgue empire and now working on the Rue Morgue Cinema first feature film, The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh, I can't see where the man has time to lay his head down to rest. And today he's shared with us the name if the star of Rosalind Leigh, Canadian actor Aaron Poole.
Poole, a 2009 Genie Award Best Actor nominee, has been featured in such films as This Beautiful City, Killing Zelda Sparks and Adoration.
The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh will begin filming in October in Toronto and horror fans can only imagine what the mind of Mr. Gudino has waiting for them. Stay tuned for more info!

One of Canada’s hottest filmmaking prospects for much of the aughts, Toronto-based Ed Gass-Donnelly made a reputation for himself as a prolific short filmmaker, making the festival rounds with several shorts during the first half of the decade. He broke through as a feature director with his 2007 drama This Beautiful City, a look at five disparate citizens of Ontario’s largest metropolis that is at once a sprawling ensemble piece and an intimate investigation into ordinary lives intertwined by extraordinary events. A favorite at that year’s Toronto International Film Festival, it went on to be nominated for four Genie Awards (Canada’s equivalent to the Oscars).
Gass-Donnelly was back at Tiff last year with Small Town Murder Songs, an eerie, impeccably acted film that is both an incisive character study and a portrait of a community whose values are embattled by modernity and a ghastly killing. Featuring what...

"Ah, the pungent odor, the fermented esprit, the sulfurous insanity of the New York Asian Film Fest!" exclaims Michael Atkinson, introducing his overview of the lineup in the Voice. "It's a new year for the city's favorite attack of the imported-irrational, and as always, the jejune state of the late-spring/early-summer box office gets a shot in the ass. The pulp is especially ripe this year, particularly from Japan, where manga-ness seems to have gone from a national pastime to a mass psychosis."

Michael J Anderson splits the difference, concentrating on Takashi Miike's Ninja Kids!!! and Na Hong-jin's The Chaser (image above). Small Town Murder Songs is centered on the odd coupling of a kicking indie soundtrack and the somber setting of a small Ontario town dominated by a large Mennonite population. The second feature from promising Canadian filmmaker Ed Gass-Donnelly (This Beautiful City), the film is as much music-video collection as crime drama: The interludes in which the songs swell into voluptuous prominence balance out a tale of crime and redemption so spare, it’s almost abstract. It turns out to be an uncommonly powerful combination, the investigation of the rural area’s first murder case taking on the heft of ...

It doesn’t happen often but once in a while a film comes along that sweeps you off your feet from the opening credits. It plays, you enjoy it, it ends and you wish it were longer and that you had the opportunity to spend more time with the people, the places and the music. That’s what it felt like to walk out of Ed Gass-Donnelly’s sophomore effort Small Town Murder Songs.
I’m not familiar with Gass-Donnelly’s previous work (though you’d best believe I’ll shortly be getting acquainted with his debut feature This Beautiful City) but something about this trailer spoke to me. Chicago – The DVD Round-Up has traveled the globe this week to bring you a diverse slate of under-the-radar titles received in the HollywoodChicago.com offices this holiday season. With so many major releases this time of year, it’s hard to cover everything, but we wanted to make sure you knew these were out there in case you have a gift card burning a hole in your pocket.
One quick note: We don’t usually inject opinion into the DVD Round-Up. It’s a recurring column merely designed for informational purposes regarding some lower profile titles new on shelves. We’d like to make a rare exception for “Sita Sings the Blues,” a simply wonderful animated film that we only wish we had more time to spotlight but that we wanted to make sure you knew was available before the end of the year. Don’t just go rent it.

"Doesn't Mean Anything" music video opens with Alicia Keys uttering words, "This beautiful city feels empty. All the people in the world and you can still feel lonely. What's the point of having it all without the person you love. Sometimes you just need to start again in order to fly." All alone in her apartment, she is seen sitting behind the piano and singing to the song while watching the city view through the window.
"Doesn't Mean Anything" is the lead single from Alicia's December 1 release "The Element of Freedom". "You dream of having all these things, you dream of going all these places. But what's the point of doing that, having that, if the one you want to be there isn't with you?," Alicia said when explaining about the song.

Nathaniel Geary's independent film is a sign that not all independent films can be excellent despite the originality. This means that On the Corner always give you the feeling that it could have been better than what we see in the end-result. Hopefully, the film feels quite realistic since it was shot on location in the neighbourhood of Downtown Eastside (a place with serious problems of poverty and drugs) in Vancouver.
