DC Extended Universe had its ups and downs during the ten years of its existence, and some of the biggest downs were 2016’s ‘Suicide Squad’ and 2017’s ‘Justice League.’ Both of these movies had troublesome productions, and ultimately, they were released with many changes and cuts that were orchestrated by the studio. Even though ‘Suicide Squad’ was undoubtedly a commercial success, the critical response from both critics and audiences was largely negative, even though Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn was praised, and the movie won the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling.
Following the theatrical release of 2017’s ‘Justice League,’ many fans started an online campaign, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, calling the studio to release Zack Snyder’s Director’s Cut, and that gigantic four-hour movie was ultimately released on HBOMax in 2021. The fans and critics agreed that the Director’s Cut is much better than the theatrical movie,...

"Superman II" is pretty entertaining, but no matter which version you watch, it feels like you're watching an incomplete movie. This can't be blamed on director Richard Donner, whose tribulations with making the movie are almost as infamous as the Christopher Reeve Superman era itself. It's just that a painful domino effect spearheaded by corporate bigwigs essentially doomed the project, even if the final products aren't necessarily bad. It's just that it could have been so much more.
For his part, Donner recognized this. While he sadly passed away in 2021, he had been quite open about the "Superman II" that could have been if his 2006 "Donner Cut" actually embodied his full vision. There were scenes that he couldn't include in that so-called definitive edition because Warner Bros. had destroyed them, but thankfully, he didn't forget about them. In an IGN interview leading up to the release of "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut,...

It took a lot to bring "Superman" and "Superman II" to the big screen. Director Richard Donner and producer Alexander Salkind didn't get off to the best start, with Donner having to salvage a truly disastrous script that Salkind evidently felt was "perfect." But once "Superman" debuted in 1978, things started looking up. Or so it seemed.
With "Superman," Donner helped invent the modern blockbuster, setting a blueprint for every superhero movie that would follow and breaking box office records in the process. What made "Superman" an even more impressive feat was that during production, Donner had simultaneously shot most of the sequel. "Superman" and "Superman II" were filmed simultaneously, which meant the crew worked from a hefty script that required Donner to film scenes for both movies alongside one another.
Unfortunately, in order to make the "Superman" release date, Donner and co. had to stop filming "Superman II" before it was finished.

Look, up in the sky! It's not a bird or a plane, but it's definitely one heck of a treat for fans of the big blue boy scout superhero. Superman may have experienced a bit of a rocky road in recent DC history on the big screen, despite an actor as capable and charismatic as Henry Cavill leading the action and even with James Gunn's promise that the immensely popular hero will be a "huge priority" moving forward. But even the biggest DC fans would have to admit that there's a certain ineffable charm to the original movies that first made audiences believe that a man could truly fly.

Hate to sound like Captain Obvious here, but there’s a disproportionate number of sequels out there. Of the ten highest grossing films of 2014, seven are straight up continuations of stories, while the other three are either reboots of existing properties or Guardians Of The Galaxy.
Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be another article moaning about how bad this is (not directly any way). Considering among those sequel box office hits are How To Train Your Dragon 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and X-Men: Days Of Future Past it’s clear they can be pretty damn good, with the guys behind them putting actual effort into making a solid movie. Which is more than can be said of days gone by, where sequels were unanimously cheap affairs with no semblance of artistic merit. How else could there be four Jaws movies?

How close to Superman lore does Man Of Steel fly, and are its changes for the better, asks Seb...?
Warning: This feature contains lots of spoilers for Man Of Steel.
A little over two years ago, I was at a screening of Zack Snyder’s film Sucker Punch, which also featured a Q&A with the director himself beforehand. Despite the protestations of the PR people and the fact that nobody was able to ask questions about a film they hadn’t yet seen, Snyder had only days earlier been announced as the director of a rebooted Superman film. As such it meant that the Man Of Steel was heavily on the agenda.
I was one of the audience members who asked a question that night, and was met with a dismissal of sorts by Snyder when I asked if there were any particular storylines,...

Any fan of the Superman movie series knows of the myriad problems experienced during the filming of Superman II. The most notable was the estranged relationship that director Richard Donner had with producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind. Donner’s plan was to film the first two movies simultaneously, but he was eventually dropped from the production and replaced with Richard Lester. In 2006, Warner Bros. worked with Donner to restore his own vision to Superman II, releasing his cut of the film. The result is an incomplete movie patched together from alternate takes and even some screen tests. However, as flawed as this cut of the film is, it is nice to see the original director get some closure in one of the original superhero movie franchises. Donner and his creative consultant Tom Mankiewicz lend their voices to the commentary on this film, which can be purchased separately or in the box set of Superman films available on...

It has been five years since Bryan Singer's last directorial effort, "Valkyrie." That film -- a modest success at the domestic box office (and an even larger one overseas) -- was a reclamation project, of sorts, for both its couch-jumping star, Tom Cruise, and Singer, who was looking to rebound after the disappointing box office tally of 2006's "Superman Returns." But, something even more important may have come out of the production of "Valkyrie": Bryan Singer's Twitter account, of all things.
If you follow Singer's Twitter feed, you'll notice that he's busy promoting his new film, "Jack the Giant Slayer" (which opens this Friday) like any filmmaker with a Twitter account would be doing. But he's also kind of revolutionizing the way a filmmaker can use the social media platform: by bypassing the usual trade outlets and tweeting the casting news of his next film, "X-Men: Days of Future Past,...

A little over a year from now, the most iconic comic character in history will be back on screens, courtesy of Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel." Seven years on from Bryan Singer's oft-derided "Superman Returns," it'll see "The Dark Knight" mastermind Christopher Nolan producing a new, seemingly darker take on the character, to be played by Henry Cavill with Michael Shannon as his Kryptonian nemesis, General Zod.
But Shannon will have big shoes to fill: the last time the character was on the big screen it was played by Terence Stamp in 1981's "Superman II," still seen by many fans as not only the best take on that character, but the best screen version of Superman to date. Which was impressive, considering it had about as troubled a production history as you could ask for, with two directors, production stretched over two years, and a recent, wildly different reissue of the film.

In 1987, director Richard Donner and screenwriter Shane Black came up with a new kind of action movie where the laughs were just as fast-paced as the thrills with Lethal Weapon, starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. The film made $120 million and led to three sequels in 1989, 1992 and 1998. With $900 million, the franchise was a huge success.
Unfortunately, after Lethal Weapon 4, everyone involved with the series went their separate ways. Although Gibson acted in blockbuster films like The Patriot, Chicken Run and What Women Want and directed the blockbuster Biblical drama The Passion of the Christ, he subsequently lost all public goodwill with his drunken Anti-Semetic remarks during an arrest in 2006; Gibson continued acting in 2010 with Edge of Darkness and followed a year later with The Beaver. Glover continues to act in films such as Saw, The Shaggy Dog, Be Kind Rewind and 2012. Donner essentially retired from directing after 16 Blocks and...

For many, the list of actors that are missed more than Gene Hackman isn’t all that long. His retirement in 2004, though not quite “official,” seems to have been legitimate, as the only acting credit he’s had since then is for Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut — and that’s all footage from the late ’70s-early ’80s.
If Alexander Payne gets his way, Hackman‘s last movie won’t be the awful Welcome to Mooseport. The Descendants writer & director is preparing his next feature, a Robert Nelson-scripted drama about a father and son who take a road trip from Montana to Nebraska so the father can “claim his million-dollar sweepstakes prize” with Publisher’s Clearing House. We heard in January that Descendants actor Robert Forster was rumored for the role of the dad, Casey Affleck the role of the son. If you've ever wrapped a towel around your neck and pretended to fly, humming or whistling John Williams' iconic theme song, you've known the joy - even if it's just momentarily - of being Superman. If recapturing that feeling is something you desire, I can think of no better way to accomplish that than through the monumentous Blu-ray collection of The Superman Motion Picture Anthology.
This astounding collection accumulates everything a Superman fan could possibly want: Superman The Movie, Superman The Movie: Extended Edition, Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman III, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, and Superman Returns. But not only does it include the films themselves (all complete with commentary tracks except Returns, itself loaded with a nearly three hour making-of documentary), this eight disk set contains over twenty hours of bonus features - enough to turn even the passing fan into a downright Superman historian.

Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology is the definitive comic book movie collection. While many long time Superman fans may still have the bad taste of Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace left on their tongues, this anthology rekindles all that was great about the franchise and, of course, Christopher Reeve. An added blu-ray bonus disc collects several feature length documentaries on Superman, ranging from an examination into the Man of Steel myth to a scientific exploration of his powers. Nearly everyone involved in the Superman franchise from its inception to Superman Returns shares their thoughts on the franchise, while paying tribute to Christopher Reeve. You will see cast members like Jackie Cooper (Perry White), Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) and Marc McClure (Jimmy Olsen) as well as Director Richard Donner and Executive Producer Ilya Salkind.

Who’S It For? Young super hero fans will eat this one up. It’s also funny enough to appeal to a wide audience.
Expectations: I thought the level of difficulty was pretty high with this one. The Avengers are based on fictional science and money (Hulk and Iron Man). Thor is a god with a big hammer from a land of rainbow walkways. Plus, Hemswroth is not a household name … yet.
