That beautiful house (on the Universal lot) that the Cleavers moved into in Season 3 is historic. Personally, I never cared much for the original homestead the gang lived in, as it looked old and the yard was too small. What were the producers thinking? They didn't even have much room to make some decent basketball shots in front of the garage.
That said, the new house, long called the LEAVE IT TO BEAVER HOUSE for generations, had all the amenities; a beautiful street, large driveway and lots of space in the front and back yard. I remember seeing it in the background of other tv shows, such as ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, and it was apparently re-built, and exceptionally well. It also had history. This was "the house" (the front lawn) where gangster Humphrey Bogart was shot and collapsed in the DESPERATE HOURS, one of his final classic films. Watch for that ironic scene. Years later, it became the home of MARCUS WELBY, and featured in the background of so many other movies and tv shows. As for the poem, and trying to learn and understand it, that's tough when you're 10 years old! Of course, it all relates to a tree Beav wants to retrieve from their old house with lots of sentimentality attached. The folks get mad, especially Mr. Cleaver, but it all kind of works itself out. This is an episode I think everyone could relate to, thinking back if and when they moved to a new house and leaving "stuff" behind. Right? But no matter what, the new house still takes the headline as there are so many fine memories attached to that famous pile of wood. The same would apply to the BRADY BUNCH house for that matter. Hats off to Larry still trying to memorize that "pain in the butt" poem. I sooo can relate to that! SEASON 3 dvd box set. Check out the individual season box sets, which vary in price. You're better off to buy the box sets on line than in a store as they can be extremely high, such as the final season.
