- TriviaThe scene in which Bart welds on his racer resulted in an argument between the staff of the show and the Fox network's censors. The censors were concerned that children would imitate Bart by misusing welding tools; however, the staff was able to convince them that very few children have access to welding tools.
- GoofsWhen Homer is being taken to the institute, Milhouse assumes he is finally being taken to a mental institution. Bart replies that this is perhaps for the best, both seemingly forgetting that not very long ago, Homer was committed.

Homer: Oh, that sounds too complicated.
Homer's Brain: Okay, don't use reverse psychology.

Homer attempts to spend more quality time with Bart.
This is a another strong fatherhood episode involving Homer with multiple well placed movie tributes.
The character-driven plot has some enjoyable moments for Homer and Bart. The Martin Prince character is written well as support, along with Marge, Patty and Selma. Plus the cameo from McBain is very memorable.
I think the sporting theme and general tribute to Soap Box derby racing is very entertaining, particularly the race sequences and the homages to 'Ben Hur' and 'The Natural'.
