- TriviaWhen explaining the 1990s, Homer says that "Tracey Ullman was entertaining America with songs, sketches and crudely drawn filler material". The Simpsons began as a series of short fillers on The Tracey Ullman Show (1987) and ran from '87 to '89 when it was developed into a half hour show.
- GoofsDuring the scene where Homer has stolen Flanders' air conditioner, Rod and Todd can be seen and look like they're still 9 and 10 years old. Despite the fact that the scene is a flashback and takes place several years earlier.
- Quotes
Homer Simpson: Now son, on your first day of school, I'd like to pass on the words of advice my father gave me.
Grampa Simpson: [in Homer's mind, as he remembers] Homer, you're dumb as a mule and twice as ugly! If a strange man offers you a ride, I say, take it!
Homer Simpson: Lousy traumatic childhood!

... believe me, you'll be seeing plenty of them
Homer tells the story of Bart and Lisa's early school days.
This is a strong episode with good character moments.
The plot has some nice character arcs and backstory relating to Bart and Lisa, with their key personality traits in focus. His class-clown persona and Lisa's gifts are explained in some quite plausible moments. I particularly like the scene in the private school which is quite poignant when you consider how much potential is wasted on children whose parents cannot afford a private education or do not recognise their potential.
For me the humour is great in moments but the laughs do not come as consistently as in some of the strongest episodes. I do not think the writing is any weaker, but humour as always is in the eye of the beholder.
