The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature brings back the characters of the 2014 animated film The Nut Job for another round of puns and slapstick, in a sequel that is a bit better than the original. It works as a summer afternoon’s distraction for young kids but this unoriginal 3D animated movie won’t impress their parents much.
Instead of another heist plot, this time the animals are fighting to save their home from development. Surly Squirrel (Will Arnett), his wordless pal Buddy the rat, pug dog Precious (Maya Rudolph), and the other animals of Liberty Park in Oakton are living the easy life feasting on the contents of the town’s nut shop, even though red squirrel...

The advent of streaming services may have mixed results for the experience of watching movies, but at the very least it may have turned movies like The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature into less of an environmental blight. Twenty-five years ago, a low-rent sequel to a low-rent cartoon that made a bit of kiddie cash as a January release might have still received a theatrical release, but its real bread and butter would be a VHS release, to the tune of thousands of chunky plastic tapes housed in those big clamshell boxes. The Nut Job 2 will still sell some DVDs, of course, and maybe even some Blu-rays for home-theater enthusiasts insistent that their children must experience the adventures of Surly Squirrel in full high-definition splendor. But the main reason this movie has been cobbled together with the help of six different corporate entities (and without the help of...

You don't need to have a nut allergy to experience a bad reaction to this new animated comedy, which arrives on UK shores this week seven months after its initial run Stateside. Director Peter Lepeniotis expands his short Surly Squirrel, but even at an ever-so-brief 86 minutes, the story struggles to fill out its feature-length running time.
Will Arnett lends a Mafia wise guy-style twang to the voice of Surly, a purple squirrel who finds himself cast out from his park after destroying their winter food supply. Banished by leader Raccoon (Liam Neeson), Surly and his mute rat sidekick Buddy face gnarled rodents, a Pug called Precious (Maya Rudolph) and the mob (led by Stephen Lang) as they look for redemption by way of a giant nut heist.

Chicago – It feels like when any studio besides Walt Disney or Pixar does an animated film with celebrity voices, there is a little less lacquer on it. What the other two remember, and others forget, is that it starts with a script. All the toon landscapes in the world can’t fix a dull story.

“The Nut Job” is a case in point. It looks lovely, with well-defined characters and scenic composition – set in the “Guys and Dolls” era of caper heists. But the story lacks substance or verve, and there were stretches of dead audience silence in the preview screening. Not a good sign, because the room was populated by the target audience of kiddies. Also, the film steals gags from the Warner Brothers era of cartoons, in more of a rip-off than a tribute. All these poisonous bits add up to a long 86 minutes. That’s right,...

Way more fun than its mid-January release date would have you believe, The Nut Job is a delightfully goofy slapstick cartoon with a surprisingly dark heart. A noirish heist flick about a group of hungry animals attempting to rob a nut store in an effort to stockpile food for winter, it’s the kind of movie whose surface frivolity masks all sorts of interesting things going on underneath. Plus, it’s got a bizarre Psy cameo, so there’s that.Heroes in children’s films often start out flawed — the better to learn the obligatory life lessons — but it’s rare to find one who’s an outright jerk. Even Gru from the Despicable Me films usually confines his villainy to poetic feats like stealing the moon. But “jerk” is a good way to describe the aptly named Surly Squirrel (voiced by the aptly cast Will Arnett). He’s not a haunted loner,...

Underwhelming is the word for The Nut Job, an animated kidflick that’s nowhere in the same league as films like Despicable Me 2 or The Croods. Instead it’s more like last year’s Turbo or maybe Hotel Transylvania. Pixar aside, CG-animated films tend to be an interchangeable bunch. There’s invariably a gang of wiseacre animals, a starry cast and a climactic pursuit. The Nut Job doesn’t break the trend so much as tick every box, and while the film, based on director Peter Lepeniotis’ 2005 short “Surly Squirrel”, looks great and tries hard to earn our affection, its mediocre script and lack of memorable characters bring it down a few grades.
The story is set in fictional city of Oakton in the 1950’s, where a nut shortage is threatening the existence of the local park animals. Surly (gruffly voiced by Will Arnett) is a seasoned, tough-talking squirrel who,...

Will Arnett makes mischief as a cartoon squirrel named Surly but cartoon feature The Nut Job offers few laughs Director/co-writer Peter Lepeniotis dusts off his 2005 cartoon short Surly Squirrel and with the help of former Saturday Night Live comic Will Arnett updates the cartoon critter for The Nut Job, a feature-length adventure that borrows heavily from the DreamWorks Animation method of celebrity voice casts, four-legged heroes and enough silly slapstick for ten Looney Tunes shorts. Unfortunately, Lepeniotis’ first feature-length directing work (as well as the first animated feature from Open Road Films) fails to deliver any memorable laughs or an exciting climax that will make kids clamor for more Surly Squirrel adventures.

It was not long ago when Will Arnett mined gold with a curt, hilarious voice-acting role in Pixar’s Ratatouille as intimidating cook Horst, who brags about conquests of killing a man with his thumb. Well, Arnett’s thumb has about as much personality as his dithery voice in The Nut Job, a new animated film where the Canadian actor has the leading role. Here, however, he gives a rather unexpressive tone to Surly, a purple squirrel who is bossy, selfish and has little pity for anyone – even his mute, dependable rat sidekick, Buddy.
Surly is not just a bland protagonist, but he is intensely dislikable and Arnett’s smarmy voice does the protagonist no favors. By the film’s end, you wish that another of the actor’s characters, G.O.B. from Arrested Development, had passed you a “Forget-Me-Now” pill to remove this weak, children-aimed adventure from your memory.

This weekend, a brand-new animated comedy scampers into theaters with "The Nut Job," a furry take on the heist movie. Directed by Canadian animator Peter Lepeniotis (who has worked for both Disney and Pixar), "The Nut Job" is an adaptation of his 2005 short film "Surly Squirrel," this time expanded to feature-length and complete with an all-star cast that includes Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Katherine Heigl and Liam Neeson.

It makes sense that The Nut Job has more nut-related jokes, puns, and entendres than other films less concerned with squirrels and nuts.
But a running count yields only 13, including the title — a stingy number, considering the film's proliferation of opportunities, including a climax hinging on nuts in sacks.
This animated feature's script doesn't shy away from low-hanging fruit, though, indulging in slapstick, wacky voices, and wildlife-themed insult humor, but the filmmakers really threw off their restraints with the animals' exuberant, beefy farting.

The Nut Job is, oddly enough, an animated film that I’ve been looking forward to probably since long before it was even an idea. It was probably the release of Cars that got me thinking about animated films taking on classic genres of film, and a heist film seems a fair enough place to start.
The trailer manages to give us a good feel for what we’re getting into here, and even if it looks like we may lean a little heavily toward juvenile humor, there could be a pretty solid story here. Surly Squirrel (Will Arnett), a continuation from director Peter Lepeniotis’ 2005 short, is a squirrel with a lot of ideas. His wild machinations clearly get him into trouble at times, and his latest scheme seems to have caused widespread difficulty in the form of the destruction of much of the winter food supply. Now it’s time for a new plan,...

Must… avoid… obvious… “Among his particular set of skills" gag… Urge to write…. Rising… Okay, we’re good. Ahem. Liam Neeson is getting deeper into the cartoon movie business, signing on to play a villainous raccoon in indie CG comedy The Nut Job.The film, which Peter Lepeniotis has adapted from his 2005 short Surly Squirrel (see below), finds the titular squirrel and rat friend Buddy hatching a nut store heist that goes badly wrong in 1950s’ town Oakton. To add to their numerous troubles, they also have to deal with Neeson’s bandit-striped type. And no, it's not to be confused with animation's other famous bad-tempered squirrel. “Having the distinguished Liam Neeson lend his talents as the raccoon villain is the perfect finishing touch,” says Lepeniotis. “His contribution fulfils that dramatic need in our comedy adventure. It’s an honour working with him.” Neeson joins a cast that already includes Will Arnett,...
