Today, Apple TV+ revealed the premiere date and a first look at Women in Blue (“Las Azules”), its upcoming ten-episode Spanish-language crime drama featuring an entirely Hispanic cast and crew led by Ariel Award nominee Bárbara Mori.
Created by International Emmy Award-winning showrunner and director Fernando Rovzar and Pablo Aramendi, Women in Blue will make its global debut with the first two episodes on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, on Apple TV+, followed by one episode weekly through September 25.
Set in 1970 and inspired by true events, Women in Blue tells the story of four women who defy the ultra-conservative norms of the time and join Mexico’s first female police force, only to discover that their squad is a publicity stunt to distract the media from a brutal serial killer.

Self-righteous certitude, seething resentment, and taciturn parental authority collide repeatedly in Lowriders, an exploration of a nuclear family and Mexican-American culture. Directed with conviction by Ricardo de Montreuil and bathed in amber by cinematographer Andrés Sánchez, the film is similar in look to the duo's previous feature together. Released more than 10 years ago, La mujer de mi hermano (aka My Brother's Wife ) was a gauzy representation of a dreamy fantasy, filled with familial melodrama. More grounded in reality, Lowriders is nonetheless still stuffed with a heightened sense of drama, blended this time with an earnest desire to educate outsiders and celebrate car culture. The original script by Elgin James and Cheo Hodari Coker lays out the archetypes clearly, mostly following Danny Alvarez (Gabriel...

Barbara Mori's latest film has encountered problems with the Indian censor board. The Mexican actress, who made her Indian cinema debut opposite Hrithik Roshan in Kites, will be seen next in La Mujer De Mi Hermano (My Brother's Wife). A source for Mid Day said that the film, which releases in both Hindi and English, faced cuts from the censors. "The Spanish version has frontal nudity and a lot of intimate lovemaking (more)...

If cinema reflects the state of its country of origin, and I believe it always does, then things are not looking up for Mexico, nor have they in all of my lifetime (Bunuel was not imagining things with his darkly imaginative creations). Scratch a Mexican movie and -- unless it's a nitwit romantic comedy or something on the order of the soap-opera slushy, Latin American co-production La Mujer de mi hermano that was released here a few years back -- you're likely to have your nose rubbed in heavy-duty class divisions, with the nasty rich struggling to hold onto everything they have, while the poor and would-be upwardly mobile, hardly much better, are scrambling to pull themselves up by their crap-infested bootstraps. Nothing changes and everything looks grim -- though it's often brought to life with great style. (See Nicotinafor a dose of that style.

Barbara Mori's latest picture has not been released in India due to Kites's poor box office figures, according to reports. The Mexican actress made her debut in Kites alongside Hrithik Roshan but the film was not a hit with Bollywood audiences. Her new Spanish movie La Mujer De Mi Hermano (My Brother's Wife), which has been dubbed in Hindi and English, will now apparently not be released in India because of the Kites failure.

Yesterday I posted a trailer for the Bollywood film Kites, which opens today all over the planet on the same day it also opens in India: it’s an attempt to drum up some love outside India and Indian ex-pat communites among mainstream moviegoers for the movies that are often seen by more people than many Hollywood films... though only inside India. Bollywood certain makes more films in any given year than Hollywood does, but so far, not one of them has captured the attention of non-Indian audiences around the world the way that Hollywood films cross cultural barriers. So, here comes Kites, which is not exactly a traditional Bollywood film to start with. From a press release about the film: Produced on an epic scale, and set primarily against the lavish backdrop of Las Vegas, Kites tells the story of two star-crossed lovers who are destined to be together...

The positive energy here is palpable. Everyone is not only happy to be here, but business is brisk. It feels like a natural place for a Latin American market with films, buyers and sellers all discussing Spanish language films con mucho gusto.
A lot of Incaa and Euro money went into this. Held in the magnificent space of Harrods next to Calle Florida where shopping deals rule, and in the Cinemark Theaters on the Rio de la Plata River, well organized with online screenings of films which will continue to be available to participants for the next two months on Cinando, it looks ordained as a key event on the market calendar.
How it will compare to Guadalajara Film Festival and Market in March is a question that hangs in the air. Cinando's participation there goes back four years with its active Co-Production Market.

Roadside Attractions is releasing both Good Hair and From Mexico with Love today. We all know about Good Hair, the Toronto premiering doc by Chris Rock inspired by his daughter’s hair styling concerns. Check out Roadside Attraction’s Facebook Page and you’ll see more on this hands-down, well-loved film.

PARK CITY -- A taut, stylish drama brimming with heated sex and illicit desire, Ricardo de Montreuil's Mancora represents a noteworthy sophomore feature from the Peruvian director.
The film's appealing cast, alluring locations and fluent visual style comprise distinct assets for a specialty distributor capable of following up on the boxoffice accomplishments of de Montreuil's 2006 debut feature, La Mujer de mi Hermano, released domestically by Lionsgate.
Moody 21-year-old Santiago Santi Pautrat (Jason Day) snaps out of his smoldering self-absorption when his father -- a faded pop singer -- jumps off a bridge to his death, leaving his son wracked with guilt.
Santi blames himself for not spending more time with his dad, and things only worsen when he flunks his economics studies at university and his girlfriend breaks off their relationship.
Losing his job is the final straw. With few ties to keep him in Lima, Santi plans a road trip north to the beach town of Mancora. The arrival of his attractive older stepsister Ximena (Elsa Pataky), a photographer from New York whom he hasn't seen since their mother died five years before, and her wealthy, petulant husband Inigo (Enrique Murciano) force Santi to revise his solo getaway plan and the trio set out together in his dad's old Mercedes sedan.
Ximena and Inigo's rocky relationship feeds Inigo's petty jealousy over the closeness between Ximena and Santi. Tensions gradually build with nasty comments until Ximena impetuously decides to leave with Santi en route to surf a famous beach praised by Batu (Phellipe Haagensen), a hitchhiker they pick up along the way. The pair continues on to laid-back Mancora with Batu, who invites them to a street carnival where Santi is drawn into a drunken brawl with a local hard case after his girlfriend makes a public pass at Santi.
Following their night of heavy drinking, Santi and Ximena end up on a beach where they are forced to confront the sexual tension building between them, fueled by significant glances and shared intimacy. Inigo's unexpected arrival in Mancora further aggravates the siblings' complicated situation, as they all set off on a binge of ill-advised relentless partying that irrevocably strains their already frayed relations.
The attractive international cast, anchored by Day's intense channeling of Santi's personal demons, delivers solid support for the colorful if occasionally overheated script by Oscar Torres, Angel Ibarguren and Juan Luis Nugent, particularly Pataky as the perilously conflicted Ximena.
The film's energetic pacing, proficient camerawork and broad-minded approach allow de Montreuil to balance the foreboding that overshadows the narrative with a sense of expectant possibility, though the open-ended conclusion may prove perplexing for some.
