Back in 1991, Troma‘s Toxic Avenger franchise – which is full of nudity and vulgarity, and soaked in bodily fluids – unexpectedly got a kid-friendly spin-off with the animated series Toxic Crusaders… and a few months ago, Retrowave announced that they’re bringing the Toxic Crusaders back in a beat ’em up video game that’s described as a “radical, radioactive romp for a new era, featuring awesome action, crushing combos and more toxic waste than you’ll know what to do with!” The Toxic Crusaders game is expected to reach PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, and Xbox One sometime in 2024, and today a trailer for the game has arrived online! You can watch it in the embed above.

No Troma remake should attempt to match Troma at its revolting, boundary-demolishing, trigger-happy game. Take 1980’s Mother’s Day, for example. Troma Entertainment ringleader Lloyd Kaufman let his brother Charles Kaufman shoot a rape-revenge exploitation sleazefest no mamma would applaud. Darren Lynn Bousman’s 2010 remake abandons Tromaville signatures almost entirely for a mean-mugging reinterpretation rooted in more straightforward thriller formulas because few indie studios are willing to push as far as Troma — especially in today’s acutely more socially attentive climate. You could get away with Mother’s Day (1980) in the 80s, especially with its cereal bowls filled with consumerism commentaries, but even today’s midnighter-loving moviegoer is looking for something more evolved.
Then again, Troma’s catalog might be the most fertile soil for remakes, given how even midrange studio pocket change would be a budgetary increase. Troma Studios has earned its legacy as an independent horror tentpole, but...

Retroware has announced another blast from the past for Saturday morning cartoon aficionados (and horror fans) with Toxic Crusaders. Yes, the same Toxic Crusaders cartoon that’s now streaming on Screambox! The game is aiming for a late 2023 release on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series and Xbox One.
The story sees Dr. Killemoff once again causing trouble, and it’s up to Toxie and his team of hideously deformed creatures of superhuman size and strength to stop Dr. Killemoff and his plans for global pollution.
Similar to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge last year, Toxic Crusaders will see you as Toxie with up to three other players in an arcade-style beat-’em-up. You’ll be able to choose from seven playable characters, including Toxie, No-Zone, Junkyard, Major Disaster, Headbanger, Toxie’s musically “gifted” girlfriend Yvonne, and the mother of all mothers, Mrs. Junko, Toxie’s mom!

Mubi's retrospective, The Vulgar Disruptor: Troma Restored, runs March - May, 2020.Illustration by Ethem Onur Bilgiç“To understand Troma, you must first know a bit about Taoism…,” or so says Lloyd Kaufman, president and co-founder of one of the longest running independent film studios, in his 1998 book All I Need to Know About Filmmaking I Learned from The Toxic Avenger. Which may or may not be so. He also says, “Troma films do exactly what low-budget films shouldn’t do. Our films defy genre… We are the Cuisinart of cinema.” Troma Studios was founded in 1974 by Kaufman and Michael Herz. Today, Troma is known for its mutating creatures and graphic violence commingling comedy, science fiction, horror, gore, and sex in films that defy categorization. It wasn’t mutating chickens (Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead) or toxic janitors (The Toxic Avenger 1-4) that first brought Troma success, however, but...

After five decades of being one of the biggest crusaders, innovators, and purveyors of independent genre filmmaking, the legendary Lloyd Kaufman shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of speaking with “Uncle Lloyd” about TromaDance 18, which kicks off this weekend in Manhattan, and he also discussed Return to Return to Nuke ’Em High, which is officially set to premiere later this year, and how the new Troma Now streaming service is giving fans access to an amazing array of indie horror films. Suffice to say, when it comes to fighting the good fight for indie cinema, Kaufman is still happy to be in the frontlines alongside Michael Herz and his Troma family more than 40 years now.
Congrats on another year of TromaDance. Can you talk about what the mission was when you guys first started this festival nearly two decades ago, and...

Epicureanism has come to be associated with mindless indulgence in food and sex, even if those ancient Athenians called for more restraint than you’d typically see in your average horror movie.
Countless horror films, of course, have echoed cultural anxieties surrounding sex, but that other physiological need, food, is also a common ingredient. Poor impulse control is at the heart of every slasher film—usually the perp acting on his, but also the risk-taking behaviors of his victims. And it’s not much of a stretch to consider that there’s a genetic component to this, whether manifested in psychopathy or an inability to keep the fridge door shut.
According to a Bloomberg report, 2015 was the first year Americans spent more on dining out than on groceries, as at-home food prep shows proliferate and the real-life horror that is the obesity epidemic shaves years off our lives. Luckily, amidst...

1986 was a hugely important year in genre cinema—part of the five-year stretch between 1982 and 1987 that arguably makes up the best run of genre movies in history. Major studios and major filmmakers like Fox, James Cameron, David Cronenberg, and John Carpenter were turning out genre classics. New voices like Fred Dekker and John McTiernan were introducing themselves to audiences. Franchises like Friday the 13th, Star Trek, and Psycho were still going strong on the big screen. And in the middle of all this, America’s longest-running independent studio, Troma, cemented their very specific and wholly original cinematic voice with Class of Nuke ’Em High.
Troma co-founder Lloyd Kaufman had already been producing and directing films for over a decade—first art films and then a series of outrageous sex comedies like Waitress! and Stuck on You!—but it wasn’t until 1984’s The Toxic Avenger that Kaufman more or less established Troma’s house style.

Lloyd Kaufman has been a major innovator in the indie film industry since the ’70s, and now his company, Troma Entertainment, is entering the world of online streaming with their new service Troma Now.
The notoriously irreverent filmmaker took to Reddit yesterday to discuss his biggest Hollywood fans, his most famous films and even the state of current reality television (and how he would improve upon it.) Check out some of Kaufman’s most entertaining answers below.
What do you think of the current state of “midnight movies”? Would you like to see them make a comeback?
I think they are making a comeback. Not so much at theaters but at places like Tromadance/other festivals, college film societies, and lots of bars. I specialize in showing movies at bars because I am an alcoholic.
Could you create a Troma today, with Netflix/YouTube etc? Would it be easier?
That is a great question, no. Today is harder, Netflix does nothing today to support independent cinema. The marketplace is controlled by a very small number of media conglomerates. The good news is that you do not need a lot of money to create something amazing, check out Troma’s “Father’s Day,” which was made with under a 25k budget. This is due to young filmmakers having a solid grasp of this new digital age, which I myself need to work on still. The “Return To Nuke’Em High” budget is 400k per volume, for example.
Will Troma Now get an Android TV/Apple TV apps in the future? What do you think about the dwindling relevance of physical media?
Go ahead and watch “VHS Massacre” on Troma Now (working on the apps!). I am a believer in new technology in the same way I would not use a buggy whip to get around town, I would use a car. I believe digital looks better than 35mm which is why I shot the volumes of “Return To Nuke’Em High” digitally, not in film.

I want to say how sorry I was to hear about Joe Fleishaker’s death. Did he have a role in “Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 2”? Looking forward to checking out Troma Now!
Spoiler Alert: You will see Joe Fleishaker and the late Lemmy Killmister in “Return To Nuke’Em High, Volume 2.” We will be dedicating Vol. 2 to the memory of these two wonderful Troma friends.
What are a few of your favorite scenes or elements in Troma films?
Penises! Farts! Explosive Diarrhea! Lesbians! Fighting against the conspiracy of elites! And of course, certain Hideously Deformed Creatures of Super Human Size & Strength!
Hey Lloyd, big fan! I’ve seen quite a few of your movies but “Poultrygeist” may be my absolute favourite – do you have any memorable experiences from working on that one?
The entire experience was a nightmare of the most horrible kind. If you’d like to see it, go to Troma Movies on YouTube and watch the feature length behind the scenes documentary “Poultry in Motion: The Truth is Stranger than Chicken”. You will see fist fights, people getting on bended knee asking for hands in marriage, as well as Uncle Lloyd being an asshole!

Hi Lloyd! What have been some directors or specific movies that inspired how you make your own?
Chaplin, Keaton, Stan Brakhage, Jean Renoir, Fritz Lang, Samuel Fuller, Roger Corman, comic books by Stan Lee (who is a good friend and with whom I wrote a screenplay in the early 70s). Today I am inspired by directors who were inspired by me: Trey Parker, Quentin Tarantino (who inspired me to make “Return to Nuke ‘Em High” a two-part event film), and Takashe Miike. Most recently, John Brennan’s “Kabukiman’s Cocktail Corner” changed my whole worldview.
What do you think of reality TV? Its more or less today’s cheap, popular exploitation media?
I believe that reality TV could be terrific, but unfortunately it aims at the lowest common denominator. They all seem to be scripted and want to appeal to Kim Kardashian. We are developing a reality show starring Kim Kardashian and Kim Jong Un. It’s called “I Love Myself, I Love My Ass.”

Credited to 38 writers and directors, 2016’s Grindsploitation is the ultimate homage to exploitation cinema, a two-and-a-half hour anthology consisting entirely of fake grindhouse trailers. Among the directors are Lloyd Kaufman (Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead), Donald Farmer (An Erotic Vampire In Paris) and porn star Tommy Pistol, which gives you an idea of the content.
The movie is released in the UK in October, and in order to whet your appetite for it is Grinsploitation 2: The Lost Reels (“the sequel that nobody asked for and nobody wanted”), the fake sequel to the fake anthology. It’s clearly meant to be a joke because Body Bag Films are releasing the picture on April Fools’ Day.
Promising a mix of shorts, banned scenes and trailers, all filmed in a faux grindhouse style (expect lots of fake scratches and static bars), The Lost Reels throws in all the ingredients you’d expect – martial arts,...

As paradoxes go, this one’s up there with Schrodinger’s Cat: while it’s easier than ever to find movies to watch, it’s never been more difficult for a film to find its audience. Most films are sneaked out rather than released, and if you’re not a blockbuster, nobody appears to be paying much attention.
When Troma attempted to self-distribute their movie Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead, they lost money on the theatrical release and the DVD. Not because it’s a duff movie – it’s one of Troma’s best – but because they didn’t have sufficient resources to reach viewers. Instead, the movie just lay there, unseen and unsung.

This week, Anchor Bay Films is unleashing Lloyd Kaufman’s Tromasterpiece, Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 1, to Blu-ray and DVD. To mark the occasion, Daily Dead recently chatted with Uncle Lloydie about his latest directorial effort, his approach to controversial material, and what kind of madness Troma fans can expect from Volume 2:
Thanks so much for taking time to speak with me today, Lloyd. Being a big Troma fan, I thought Return to Nuke ‘Em High (Volume 1) might be my favorite sequel to come out of Tromaville. With it being a few years since you were in the director’s chair, why did you decide to return with the Nuke ‘Em High franchise?

When Lloyd Kaufman invites you to Troma Studios to conduct an interview, you go to Troma Studios to conduct an interview. What I expected was more of the same – walking in, waiting patiently, rocking through a short one on one session, and going about my merry way. Another day, another dollar.
What I got was more than I ever could have asked for from the fabled company, as I was first greeted with a complimentary tour around the building, showing off props and old film reels from some of Troma’s very first productions – a bit of Z-movie history if you will. Then, as I was waiting, Lloyd was kind enough to let me watch how the magic happens, granting me access to the editing room while Return To Nuke ‘Em High Vol. 2 was being worked on. Finally, my interview with Lloyd ran a rich 40 minutes, mano y legendary filmmaker,...

Greetings from Tromaville everyone! Yes, I was permitted to walk the halls of Troma Studios today for an exclusive interview with legendary low-budget filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman (which will be posted in full tomorrow), but I’ve got a hefty report for you all in the meantime. There’s some good news, some bad news, and of course – some strange news.
Let’s start off with the biggest bombshell for those of us gearing up to see Steve Pink’s remake of The Toxic Avenger, which was supposed to have Austrian muscle-head Arnold Schwarzenegger attached as a major character. Here’s the key phrase – supposed to. While IMDb still might have Arnie listed as the only cast member announced as of yet, it looks like the newly rejuvenated action star is no longer attached. While talking to Lloyd, he mentioned the following snippet:
Wgtc: I love that Arnold Schwarzenegger has committed...

Man, Tromaville High School just can’t catch any breaks it seems. Cretins, subhumanoids, monsters – the classes of “Nuke ‘Em High” have seen their share of death and destruction, but it’s been about twenty years since we last heard from them. Seems like the perfect time for writer/director Lloyd Kaufman to go all radioactive again to torture a fresh class of Tromaville’s best and brightest if you ask me – and Troma! Yes, we all know the antics that come along with a Troma feature, and Return To Nuke ‘Em High Volume 1 may be one of the most Troma-y movies Troma has ever made. The Class Of Nuke ‘Em High was built on a sturdy foundation of social satire, raw sexuality, goo-oozing gore, and slapstick, spoof-ish comedy, and Lloyd Kaufman’s latest return doesn’t abandon a single ideal. Nudity, hyper-aggressive violence, evil glee clubs, duck rape, radioactive tacos,...

What's weirder, that the former Governor of California might appear in "The Toxic Avenger," or that there's a 21st Century remake of the freaky underground favorite in the works? The original "Toxic Avenger" was a low-budget, gross-out comedy about a nerd who mutates into a gnarly superhero and takes on the bad guys of Tromaville, NJ. Although it's not clear which part Arnold Schwarzenegger is in talks to play, this is indubitably an odd move for the former Terminator. Heck, it's an odd move to reboot this for today's audience, even with an updated story: to wit, "an average teen joins an environmental club to impress his crush. While doing some investigating at a waste plant, he is thrown into a tub of waste and transforms into a radioactive hero." Writer and director Lloyd Kaufman and his studio, Troma Entertainment, have been an endless font of modern B-movie madness since the '70s.

Pairing wine with chicken is easy. With all the apps available for the purpose of food and wine pairing, it’s – as the Rolling Stones might have sung with a more digital upbringing – just a click away. Or, in this case, just a cluck away.
Of course, we could go right to the top for a pairing with Poultrygeist. The Court of Master Sommeliers recommends Pinot Noir, Gamay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and of course, Riesling, with chicken. But then, the Court of Master Sommeliers recommends Riesling with everything.
Not that the Court would appreciate being dragged into this fray. After all, it’s not just chicken with which we’re pairing, but killer chickens. Chickens that turn the table on man and scratch out a sign saying, ”Eat Mor Peepul.”
“Poultrygeist” – subtitled “The Night of the Chicken Dead,” takes nothing seriously, so neither will we.

Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film has long been a huge fan of the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival. Every year we’re extremely impressed with the way it pokes, prods, pushes and stabs the horror genre in entertaining new directions through its diverse selection of boundary breaking movies. Some of our favorite horror flicks of the past few years — such as James Eaves‘ Bane, Rona Mark‘s Strange Girls and Stuart Simpson‘s El Monstro Del Mar — came to us through Spooky Movie.
This year will mark Spooky Movie’s seventh year in existence and it should prove to be a major milestone in the fest’s history as it will move to a new home at the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland. As the festival busily prepares for their biggest edition yet to be held on October 10-18, we thought we’d check...

It's the goo that just keeps on giving.
Filmmaker Gregory Lamberson is spreading his sticky celebration of 80s cult movies even further.
Slime City Massacre, which stars Debbie Rochon and Brooke Lewis and features cameos by Roy Frumkes and Lloyd Kaufman, is heading for Buffalo's Beyond Ghosts ParaHorror Weekend on May 26 following this month's screenings in Tampa and Las Vegas.
After slithering around the horror film festival circuit, Scm - which sees bomb survivors transformed into murderous slime creatures - was released on DVD in 2011 by Media Blasters and enjoyed a limited theatrical release from Indie Film Net.
"This is what it takes to make the audience aware of a film that defies easy categorisation," says Lamberson. "Scm is horror, it's sci-fi, it's action, it's bizarro comedy."
He added: "It took the original Slime City about 18 years to develop its reputation as a cult film; it needed to fade away and be rereleased and rediscovered.

Father’s Day
Directed by Adam Brooks and Jeremy Gillespie
Written by Steven Kostanski and Adam Brooks
2011, Canada
Every once in a while a special film comes along that inspires and uplifts a generation. Troma’s latest production, Father’s Day, is not one of those films. It’s sick, depraved, exploitative, ultra-violent and outright offensive. One cannot help but wonder what kind of demented mind(s) would create such unspeakable mayhem. Even worse, what unruly souls would take pleasure in viewing its wickedness. These sentiments represent the majority of the movie-going public and mostly I would tend to agree, but in light of the obvious fact that the film’s debasement is tongue-in-cheek and a bold homage to 80’s grindhouse, I’ll give it an enthusiastic pass.
A sadistic predator is assaulting and mutilating defenseless fathers and, unfortunately, the city’s only hope is Ahab (Adam Brooks), a bumbling,...

[1] Troma Entertainment may be famous for its low-budget, independent approach to filmmaking, but the B-movie house isn't averse to the big-money kind, either. Last year saw the Fantastic Fest premiere of the Brett Ratner-produced Mother's Day remake [2], as well as the announcement of a Toxic Avenger reimaginging [3] by to be produced by Akiva Goldsman and directed by Steven Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine). Now comes news that the studio is interested in doing still more remakes, and is currently in negotiations to sell the rights to Class of Nuke 'Em High and Poultrygeist. Read more after the jump. For those who aren't familiar with Troma's works (or just need a reminder), here's the synopsis for Class of Nuke 'Em High via Troma's press release: The original Class of Nuke 'Em High, directed by Richard W. Haines and Troma President Lloyd Kaufman in 1986, tells how a radioactive leak in the...

Who knew that the little studio that could, Troma, would now find success outside of the horror and cult-movie loving community with Hollywood remakes of their movies? First we had the Brett Ratner remake of Mother’s Day starring Rebecca DeMornay and Jaime King, and there’s also a remake of The Toxic Avenger on the way too from producer Akiva Goldsman (Paranormal Activity 2 & 3, I Am Legend) and Hot Tub Time Machine director Steven Pink. And to top it all off, Troma have released a statement that say remakes of both Poultrygeist and my personal all-time favourite Troma flick Class of Nuke ‘Em High are planned as well!

Yes indeed my good friends you read that title correctly. Legendary Indie label Troma are currently in negotiations over remakes of two of their most (in)famous movies. One of my personal favorites, the 1986 shocker Class of Nuke ‘em High, and the more recent Poultrygeist both look set to get the remake treatment. How these turn out, and what the fans response will be, remains to be seen but we will keep you posted on any further developments. One thing is for sure and that is more folk will no doubt check out the originals if and when these do get made.

One of my absolute favorite Troma titles is Class Of Nuke ‘em High. I love post apocalyptic movies, and when you add the level of zany depravity that Troma brings to the table, you’ve got an instant cult classic. Though this isn’t the first sequel to “Nuke ‘em High”, it’s certainly the most surprising. It’s good to see Troma pumping out new original content. I’m glad they buy and distribute other filmmakers oddities, but this is a welcome turn of events.

What does your average film festival run for? A weekend, maybe a full week? Across the pond at the London Horror Festival, they're giving you five weeks of madness from October 25 through November 27 (thus, their Halloween is only the beginning tagline). Oh, and one other thing ... they're acting it out live every night! Any festival can pop on a movie reel, sit back and relax. These blokes have to dig down deep for every single performance ... three shows a night!
I've never heard of a five-week horror-based theatrical event, but I think it's a bloody great idea! Why do we always need the folks from the UK showing us how to do things properly? If it's not Simon Cowell or that Piers Morgan dude trying to set us straight, then it's Gordon Ramsey gagging on our inferior cooking or "Supernanny" Jo Frost whipping our kids into shape. Come on, America,...

Hard to say for certain whether or not Satan Hates You will turn out to be anything more than a bunch of forced humor and a pile of stunt casting. I'll be honest, it certainly appears that way. But I'm curious to give it a whirl and, admittedly, today's look at the DVD cover art is pretty awesome.
Satan Hates You is an over-the-top shocker full of blood, gore and plenty of appearances by genre favorites. Appearances are made by Larry Fessenden (Habit, I Sell The Dead), Angus Scrimm (Phantasm, Alias), Reggie Bannister (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep), Debbie Rochon (Night of the Living Dead, Slime City Massacre and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead) and Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes, One Flew Over The Cukoo’s Nest). Satan Hates You was written and directed by James Felix McKenny (Automations, Hypothermia).

With Cannes speeding at us like a freight train filled with goodies, super genius Lloyd Kaufman and his Troma team have unveiled some kick ass new sales art for both Father's Day and the big daddy of them all, The Toxic Avenger 5: Toxic Twins. Dig it!
Father's Day, written and directed by Astron-6 (yes, that's right - Astron-6) and starring Adam Brooks, Mackenzie Murdock, Matt Kennedy, Conor Sweeney, Amy Groening, Meredith Sweeney, Garrett Hnatiuk, and Ross McMillan.
Details are still on the scant side regarding The Toxic Avenger 5: Toxic Twins but obviously it follows everyone's favorite super hero from New Jersey into fatherhood.
Kaufman's last turn in the director's chair for a feature was the 2006 production Poultrygeist, a film that was plagued with financial and production problems, and one that threatened to actually close the doors at Troma. But, with Toxic Avenger being remade by Akiva Goldsman and...

Lloyd Kaufman
By Scott Zakarin
(April 2011)
Lloyd Kaufman is a scoundrel to the studio system, a rebel to the film festival independents and a hero to the filmmakers who don’t fit into the models that are general accepted as what movies are supposed to be. His production company Troma Entertainment (co-founded with partner Michael Herz) has been making movies with titles like “The Toxic Avenger,” “Class of Nuke ’Em High” and “Tromeo and Juliet” for almost 40 years.
The films have one thing in common: They are fun. Kaufman’s films don’t take themselves too seriously. Instead, they celebrate true independence, where the boundaries of what is considered acceptable has no bounds. A graduate of Yale University, Kaufman is fiercely intelligent and incredibly driven, and despite his outlier status, he has an incredible track record of profitable releases.

In our next installment regarding the celebration of Women in Horror Month, we maneuver our lens and focus onto the amazingly talented (and extremely busy) actress, Tara Cardinal. Take a gander below to see what Tara had to say about her thoughts on horror, fear and other such aspects of the business that you do not want to miss. Enjoy!
MoreHorror.com Hi Tara. How did you get involved in the horror business?
Tara Cardinal Horror is just extreme story telling, so I find it's a fairly natural extension for those of us Type A personalities that have to tell a story So deep that it shakes the audience to it's core. At least that's the goal!
To that end, I did a little film called "Delivery" directed by Jose Cassella, and starring myself and Matt Nelson. It's a slasher film, a throw back to...

Horror fans who live in the Buffalo, New York, area will be happy to hear a new genre film fest is coming to town this October 21-24 called the Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival, and the full lineup of short and feature films was announced earlier this week.
Gregory Lamberson and Emil Novak, Jr., are the founders of Buffalo Screams, which is happening at the Screening Room, 3131 Sheridan Avenue, in Buffalo's Northtown Plaza.
