I did not have Jonathan Groff singing “Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jana Sanam” on my 2024 bingo card. The Broadway actor humbly steps into Indian culture in Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy,” which repeatedly connects back to Aditya Chopra’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” — the film that originated “Tujhe Dekha”.
Written by Eric Randall (and based on Madhuri Shekar’s play), “A Nice Indian Boy” is all about subverting stereotypes about Indian culture, both within and outside of the community. The title itself is a cheeky twist on every aunty’s favorite refrain: that when a girl is of the right age, she or her family will find her a “nice Indian boy” to settle down with.
This time, however, protagonist Naveen (Karan Soni) is the one planning to bring home a nice Indian boy, which is probably not what all those aunties were picturing. But “A Nice Indian Boy” delights in defying expectations,...

The upcoming Marvel Studios production Thunderbolts is going to feature multiple actors from various previous Marvel films and TV shows reprising their roles. It’s got Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster… and if Thunderbolts had started filming last summer, as it was supposed to before the strikes hit, it also would have had actress/writer/comedian Ayo Edebiri, whose credits include Big Mouth, The Bear, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, in the cast. Unfortunately for Edebiri, the production delay caused her to run into scheduling issues, so she has had to drop out of the project. Deadline reports that the character she was going to be playing will now be played by Geraldine Viswanathan.

Watching an international version of Taskmaster has the uncanny quality of trying to explain a dream. The sets are the same, but also not. The theme music’s a match, but it’s playing over people and tasks you don’t recognise. The Taskmaster was there, but it wasn’t the Taskmaster, just some other tall man in a suit. And instead of the familiar comedian configuration of ‘two off telly, two off Twitter and one you’ve never heard of’, you (probably) haven’t heard of anybody.
Once you have your bearings though, free Taskmaster! Multiple new-to-you episodes to fill the gap while we wait for series 16. And it’s good stuff. The New Zealand version is particularly strong, with an excellent choice of Taskmaster’s Assistant and consistently funny comedians. Also, thanks to (the show’s own) joke that New Zealand has a population of just eight people,...

If you’d like to see the world’s saddest math equation, just watch “World’s Best.” After being given a lighthearted “equation of me” homework assignment on the first day of school, 12-year-old Prem Patel (Manny Magnus) formulates the following: Prem = (mom + dad) x math + Jerome – dad.” A math whiz still reeling from the loss of his father, Prem proves easy to root for as he navigates adolescence in “7 Days” director Roshan Sethi’s coming-of-age dramedy. But while the Disney+ original ultimately receives a passing grade, it doesn’t exactly ace the assignment the way its protagonist so often does.
Prem’s ostensible nemesis as he prepares for the upcoming Mathlympics competition is fellow math genius Claire (Piper Wallace), who literally haunts his stress dreams and proudly declares that her family “doesn’t celebrate summer” after being asked how she spent the last three months, while his best friend...

Mark Duplass and Sterling K. Brown have survived the apocalypse. Now what?
The “Safety Not Guaranteed” star and “This Is Us” alum actor play the two last men on Earth who must adapt and evolve to save humanity in Mel Eslyn’s debut feature “Biosphere.” The film premiered at 2022 TIFF and is executive produced by Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass.
Per the official synopsis, Billy (Duplass) and Ray (Brown) are lifelong best friends, brothers from another mother —they also happen to be the last two men on Earth. Their survival is largely due to Ray, a brilliant scientist who designed the custom biosphere they call home, outfitting it with both creature comforts and the necessities to sustain life on a doomed planet. When the population of their fishpond — which supplies essential protein — begins waning, the men find themselves facing an ominous future. But life may yet find a way…

"You don't need to be married to cuddle with someone." That's true! Cinedigm has revealed the trailer for 7 Days, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Roshan Sethi. This premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival last year and it just won for Best First Feature at the 2022 Indie Spirit Awards. As if their pre-arranged date, organized by their traditional Indian parents, wasn't uncomfortable enough, Ravi and Rita are forced to shelter in place together as Covid-19's reach intensifies. Ravi and Rita seemingly have nothing in common. The situation turns both awkward and enlightening when they find themselves trapped inside together for a week. Starring Geraldine Viswanathan and Karan Soni. It's executive produced by the Duplass Brothers, who are some of the best supporters of up-and-coming indie filmmakers. This looks really sweet! And awkwardly fun. Even though it's yet another pandemic comedy about being stuck together. Here's the official US...

Dating during an ongoing pandemic is hard. Well, dating has its difficulties in general, especially in this modern era that includes endless swiping on apps and filling out profiles like they're job applications. But when you add the complications of coronavirus on top of all that, the chances of finding a significant other drop considerably. For some, an old-fashioned arranged marriage might not sound so bad at this point.
Except just like nearly anything and everything during these unprecedented times, even that comes with a few challenges. But instead of experiencing that for yourself, it looks like the new romantic comedy "7 Days" from executive producers...

The 37th Annual Independent Spirit Awards took place on Sunday, returning to an in-person format following last year’s virtual ceremony. Many of the biggest names in the independent film community made the trek out to the beach in Santa Monica with the hopes of taking home the most coveted prizes in indie film. While the Spirit Awards typically take place the week before the Oscars, this year’s unique Covid-influenced awards season calendar meant that they were held nearly a month in advance. Hollywood couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally served as emcees of the proceedings.
This year’s class of nominees draws from films largely shut out from the Oscars, with indie hits like Oscar nominee “The Lost Daughter,” “C’mon C’mon,” and “Zola” racking up the most nominations. “The Lost Daughter” cleaned up, with three wins for Netflix including Best Feature and Best Director Maggie Gyllenhaal. 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards: ‘The Lost Daughter’ Takes the Top Prize (Complete Winners List)
The 37th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out Sunday at the Santa Monica Pier, with comedy power couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally serving as hosts.
There weren’t too many surprises throughout the night. Troy Kotsur won the first award of the evening, Best Supporting Male Actor for “Coda,” very much as predicted. Taylour Paige took home Best Female Lead Actor, for “Zola,” while Simon Rex, of “Red Rocket,” walked away with Best Male Lead. Ruth Negga won Best Supporting Female Actor for “Passing,” beating out Jessie Buckley from “The Lost Daughter.”
But Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of the Elena Ferrante book won the three other categories in which it was nominated — Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Feature — and was the night’s biggest victor. Gyllenhaal gave three effusive thank you speeches, spreading her appreciation around to her cast, crew, financiers, publicist, husband and mother. “Women in film!

How well do you know someone? First impressions are far from reality for two people in “7 Days.” The rom-com tackles traditions while exploring a relationship’s unusual beginning. ‘Days’ hails from director and co-writer Roshan Sethi. A practicing physician (no really), Sethi is also co-creator of Fox’s “The Resident.” Karan Soni co-wrote and stars in ‘Days.’ The actor is himself no stranger to directing — making his directorial debut on an episode of HBO’s “Room 104.” The film also stars Geraldine Viswanathan, the break-out star of “Blockers,” and the star of her endearing rom-com in “The Broken Hearts Gallery” and currently stars on “Miracle Workers” on TBS.

Three awards ceremonies are taking place the weekend of March 5. On Saturday, a double dose of the Art Directors Guild (Adg) and American Cinema Editors Awards (Ace Eddies), and on Sunday, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, airing on IFC.
Paying special attention to Adg and Ace Eddies since there’s Oscar crossover, we’re expecting a couple of surprises at both. On the Adg side, “Dune” and “Nightmare Alley” should reign triumphant, but “Don’t Look Up” may overcome fellow Netflix property “The Lost Daughter.”
At Ace Eddies, there’s a possible upset on the drama side in the favor of “King Richard’s” Pamela Martin, besting Joe Walker for “Dune.” On the other hand, “Tick, Tick … Boom!” is expected to sneak past “Licorice Pizza.”
What’s most interesting is that there is very little to no presence of the presumed Oscar frontrunners this weekend, including Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,...

Rihanna's 777 Tour is unlike anything that's been done before: Seven performances. Seven countries. Seven days. And 200 embedded journalists. Hey, it's a tough job, but someone's got to do it, and E! News was along for the ride as the weeklong whirlwind kicked off in Mexico City last night. "#777tour is about to jump start, my foot is about to touch the plane!!" Rihanna tweeted ahead of the inaugural flight yesterday. "Mexico City, are you ready?" Spoiler alert: it was. And so was Rihanna. As she told the assembled reporters in her welcome letter (nice touch), the whole endeavor started as a theoretical "Wouldn't it be cool if…" idea. Well, the rock...

It has probably never crossed your mind. It is silly, it is subtle, and it is the height of banality. But once you read this article, I suspect you will view horror movies in a whole new way. I am talking about telephones, and how they are the most important prop in the horror genre.
The Call is Coming From Inside the House!
Even if you have never seen 1979’s When a Stranger Calls, you probably know the infamous line: “The call is coming from inside the house!” From that, I’m sure you can infer that the bad guy who is stalking the girl is calling from, well, inside the house she is at. You don’t need to know that she is a babysitter, alone, or being tortured by a mystery phone caller. “The call is coming from inside the house!” is truly all you need to know.

I'm not sure he can bluff at poker, but when it comes to diplomatically not answering a direct question, Bruce Greenwood can hang with the best of them. I've interviewed him before, I've watched him work on sets, and I've had the opportunity a few times to just chat with him informally. He strikes me as really down-to-earth, a decent guy who projects a certain kind of charisma. There's a reason he got tapped to play JFK in "Seven Days," and there's a reason Jj Abrams cast him as Commander Pike, who had such a great couple of scenes with Chris...

Kim Hyoung-jun's 2010 debut feature No Mercy is the sort of twisted revenge thriller that many casual fans associate with post-2000s Korean cinema. It has drawn many comparisons with Park Chan-wook's Oldboy, mostly due to the concluding twist, which fairly shamelessly cribs from that earlier film. However, the more pertinent comparison would be to another Korean film, Won Sin-yeon's 2007 film Seven Days, in which Yunjin Kim (Lost) plays a lawyer who is compelled to seriously compromise her ethics and help free a convicted murderer to release her daughter from a kidnapper. A very similar situation sets up No Mercy. Kang Min-ho (Seol Kyeong-gu), one of Korea's top medical examiners, is ready to retire to reconnect with his daughter, who is returning to Korea after studying...

Michael Winterbottom is a predictably unpredictable filmmaker – always zigging when you think he's going to zag, and taking on material that is uniform only in the sense that it's always very different and very challenging. Everything from his hardcore sex romp "9 Songs" to his sci-fi-ish "Code 46" to a bunch of movies that don't have numbers in the title (like his terrific Southern noir "The Killer Inside Me" and his ridiculously funny "The Trip"), Winterbottom constantly surprises and even if they aren't all classics (like his revisionist literary take "Trishna" from earlier this year), they're all interesting. And with the release of the teaser for his new film "Everyday," set to premiere at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, his trend for eclecticism seems to have continued unabated. Originally titled "Seven Days" (and later "Then Here and There"),...

Previously known as Seven Days, Michael Winterbottom‘s long-developing Everyday will head to Toronto to make its world premiere and we’ve got the first festival teaser.
Winterbottom’s film has been shooting for the last five years capturing a man (John Simm) who is in prison for drug smuggling, yet trying to maintain a relationship with his wife (Shirley Henderson) and four children.
Short teaser gives us a taste of what this one has, ‘documentary-style’ feature which ‘offers a masterful meditation on the daily travails of a family living apart from their imprisoned patriarch’.
The first photos were revealed last week, and now we get a glimpse of a car ride and some attractively-shot footage of a family reuniting in the woods.
The film written by Winterbottom and Laurence Coriat will air on U.K. television later this year with some kind of stateside theatrical bow.

Well, here's a bit of surprise in a fall festival season that seems full of them. With Tiff announcing their final batch of titles today, Michael Winterbottom's long-developing "Everyday" (previously known as "Seven Days") will head to Toronto to make its world premiere, and now we have our first images from the film. Taking a page from Richard Linklater, Winterbottom's film has been shooting for a few weeks over the past five years, and stars John Simm (who worked with the director on "24 Hour Party People" and "Wonderland") and Shirley Henderson (who featured in those aforementioned films as well as "The Claim" and "A Cock And Bull Story"). Here's the official synopsis: Everyday tells the story of four children separated from their father, and a wife separated from her husband. The father, Ian (John Simm), is in prison. The mother, Karen, (Shirley Henderson) has to bring up a family of four.

When I requested a friend to water my plants, while I am away to attend a screenwriters’ workshop in Bhubaneswar, he got excited and told me how he always thought that I should also try writing sometimes and that he’s happy that I am at least giving myself a chance as a writer. But he was surprised when I told him that I am attending the workshop as an actor and not as a writer. He didn’t understand what are actors invited for in a screen writers’ workshop, honestly so didn’t I, but something about this ten day workshop with writers just intrigued me and I decided to take some time off; also the idea of exploring Bhubaneswar was fascinating too. So I landed in the city and took a cab to the venue with my friend Sunny, still wondering what I was getting into.

Screened at Taiwan Cinefest 2012. Popular Taiwanese star Blue Lan follows up domestic box office smash “Night Market Hero” with “The Spin Kid”, a fusion of modern and traditional culture with the actor as a dance music DJ and temple performer caught up in drug related troubles. Lan also produced the film, which marks the debut of writer director Joe Lee and was chosen as the opening film of the 2011 Kaohsiung Film Festival as well as playing at Taiwan Cinefest 2012 in London. Blue Lan plays A-Hao, a young man who has grown up with his temple caretaker grandfather after his mother died and his policeman father (Tai Bao, “Seven Days in Heaven”) proved unable and unwilling to care for him. Although he spends most of his time taking part in religious performances at the temple, A-Hao’s dream is to become a DJ, spinning records as a means of connecting with his memories of his mother.
