As the 77th Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25) arrives at its halfway point, here is THR executive editor of awards Scott Feinberg’s assessment of the awards prospects — at the Cannes closing ceremony and later in the fall — of the films that have screened at the fest so far.
The Two That Popped
One cannot know what the specific preferences and priorities of the Greta Gerwig-led main competition jury are, but one can categorically state that two competition films — both of which are so original and out-there that they have to be seen to be believed — have been particularly well received. Both garnered nine-minute standing ovations and rave reviews, including particular praise for their leading lady.
The first is The Substance, a body-horror flick from French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat that might be described as Sunset Blvd. meets Freaks, and an instant classic. Demi Moore, in a gutsy career-best turn...

“La Mesías” star Carmen Machi, Almodóvar muse Rossy de Palma and Blanca Portillo, a Cannes best actress co-winner for Almodóvar’s “Volver,” are set to star in “The Prey” (“Dia de Caza”), billed as a contemporary revision of Carlos Saura’s 1965 pic “The Hunt,” quite possibly his crowing achievement.
The film is set to shoot in July in Spain’s Extremadura, with theatrical release scheduled for autumn 2025.
Brutal, kinetic at times and taking no prisoners, Saura’s original won a Berlin Silver Bear. The film follows three once-close friends reuinting for a rabbit hunt; the final bloody outcome was read as a broad metaphor of the social elite in dictator Francisco Franco’s Spain.
Directed by Pedro Aguilera “The Prey,” set in the summer of 2024, has three women reuniting for a rabbit hunt in the very same stark valley where Saura shot “The Hunt” almost 60 years before. Under a remorseless sun,...

Pedro Almodovar’s Strange Way Of Life is coming to Netflix in April, after debuting last year: more on the release here.
Pedro Almodovar has – of course – a hugely impressive filmography behind him, from his breakthrough film Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown to more recent successes like Volver, his highest grossing film worldwide to date.
His most recent release was a half hour short film entitled Strange Way Of Life, his second short to be written and shot in English following 2020’s The Human Voice.
The synopsis reads as follows:
A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. 25 years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting,...

Sony Pictures Classics is reuniting with Pedro Almodovar and will release the cinematic legend’s first English-language feature film, “The Room Next Door.”
The indie studio announced it has acquired all rights in North America, the Middle East, India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand to the film, which is set to star Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, along with John Turturro. The film will begin shooting this March in New York and Madrid. Almodovar has been thinking of directing an English-language feature for some time — at one point, he considered making 2016’s “Julieta” with Meryl Streep.
The news about the distribution deal is wholly expected (it would be more shocking if Almodovar found a different partner). That’s because Sony Pictures Classics has released nearly all of Almodovar’s movies. Most recently, it oversaw the distribution of “Parallel Mothers,” which earned an Oscar nomination for Penélope Cruz.

New Zealand-based sales and distribution company Black Mandala has picked up international rights to Spanish-language genre film and 2023 festival hit “I’ll Crush Y’All” (aka “Os Reviento”).
Portrayed by Mario Mayo, Gabriel, better known as ‘Tarado,’ is a former boxer who lives in a secluded village outside the city with his father and his dog. He could still box, but to avoid what led him to spend a few years in prison, he prefers to lead a quiet life. The death of his father and the shady dealings he was hiding attract a wide range of characters to his home, each with worse intentions than the last: a brother with a troublesome new girlfriend, an angry admirer, mobsters with dark purposes, and thugs looking for a stolen bag of money.
It debuted at the FantasticFest in September and won the audience prize at both FantasticFest and the Sitges genre film festival.

Kelsey Grammer doesn’t have any plans for any of the Cheers characters to pop up in the new Frasier sitcom. However, the actor who plays Dr. Frasier Crane does think that Diane Chambers, played by Shelley Long, deserves some closure.
“I would like to see Diane come back,” Grammer said on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “For one of those reasons of Frasier to be able to put something to bed. To end up with a nice thing between them.”
He continued, “When I first got the role, the key to Frasier for me was that he loved her with his whole heart, that he loved with all of his being. And that actually defined who he is and he’s been that way ever since. He just goes in wholeheartedly with everything — and that’s what makes him funny.”

Data was named one of the best albums of 2023 — but the brilliant compendium of futuristic, boundary-pushing songs took a massive amount of work from super-producer Tainy. The Puerto Rican innovator started masterminding the LP about three years ago, pouring his most avant-garde ideas and interests into the project. He finally ended up with an intricate maze of electronic, reggaeton, and ambient sounds that crisscross multiple styles and eras, all while yanking major acts like Bad Bunny, Four Tet, Feid, and Julieta Venegas into the album’s unexpected orbit.

The world of "Poor Things" is a cornucopia of zany imagery and the costumes are no exception. The clothes themselves tell a story, and the silhouettes are crucial in creating this whimsical imagery. However, some of these elegant shapes were created using rather inelegant methods.
Mark Ruffalo stars in Yorgos Lanthimos' newest film as a fun-loving lawyer named Wedderburn who falls in love with a mad scientist's latest experiment, Bella (played brilliantly by Emma Stone), and runs away with her. The actor describes his eccentric character as "a bon vivant, a total egoist, and megalomaniac" in an interview with Indiewire. Ruffalo might be playing a romantic hero in the film, but Wedderburn is far from a traditional leading man. Even his backside is unconventional — so much so that it required a bit of movie magic. Pedro Almodóvar’s canon abounds in nimble, yet edgy, remembrances of things past. In Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, All About My Mother, and Volver, he paid homage to the language of melodrama while crafting his own version of it. Those and many of his earlier films are pervaded with a humor toward the power that the most basic elements of drama have when pushed to their aesthetic, emotional, and formal limits.
Lately, though, Almodóvar’s work feels less bent on metatexually displaying his technical adroitness than his increasingly softer look at memory. Julieta, Pain and Glory, Parallel Mothers, and even his 2020 short The Human Voice are less fixated on accentuating the theatrical than stewing in nostalgia. And if his new short, Strange Way of Life, is any indication, each subsequent work in his filmography is proving the broth is losing a layer of flavor.

Oscar-winning Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar has made a name for himself with a series of brightly colored, delightfully kinky and unabashedly melodramatic titles, mixing comedy, drama, sex and violence to great success. He shows no signs of slowing down, with his latest outing in 2019 being the Oscar-nominated “Pain and Glory.” Let’s take a look back at all 22 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1949 in Spain, Almodovar came to prominence during La Movida Madrilena, a cultural renaissance that blossomed at the end of Francoist Spain. Staring with his filmmaking debut “Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom” (1980), the openly gay director showed an affinity for oddballs and outsiders, populating his films with transvestites, transexuals and homosexuals, all of whom had previously been relegated to the closet. He also showed a talent for working with women, and throughout his 40 year career has placed actresses such as Penelope Cruz,...

The great Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar won’t be crossing over to the dark side anytime soon.
Almodóvar, proclaiming himself an unquestioned auteur who makes all the big decisions in his films, pinpointed the reason he has abstained from making even one American movie in his nearly 50-year career in cinema.
“I have a specific way of working and my intuition has told me that it is not the way to work in Hollywood or with the studios,” Almodóvar said in an interview with the Independent. “I mean, I am an artisan.”
Almodóvar, whose gay Western short “Strange Way of Life” starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke debuts in theaters next month, stopped short of calling himself a “control freak” but made no bones about the fact he not only holds the cards in his movies — he keeps the whole deck close at hand.

Wes Anderson has done it all: India by train, Rhode Island by foot, the Mediterranean by sub, France by bike, faux-Germany by hotel, apple-orchard America by fox, animated Japan by dog, motel Texas by friends, New York City by family. But––despite the feeling that this couldn’t possibly be true––he’s never told a story in western America. In setting he hasn’t gone further west than Houston. A selection at Venice Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival, Emanuele Crialese’s 1970s-set, Penélope Cruz-starring drama L’immensità opened in theaters earlier this summer from Music Box Films. Now, with the film arriving digitally today, we’re pleased to exclusively debut an alternate poster inspired by Federico Fellini classic. Along with the poster debut, we’re delighted to give away 10 digital codes to watch the film on AppleTV. To enter, sign up for The Film Stage’s free newsletter by July 16 (available to U.S. readers only).
Designed by Greenlight Creative, here’s their statement about the new poster: “The La Dolce Vita-inspired poster for L’immensità evolved out of the original design explorations for the film’s theatrical poster. We were looking to find a design style that would place the film in a vibrant mid-century or ’70s period setting, communicate a bittersweet, nostalgic tone, and provide a star platform for Penélope Cruz.

Paris-based sales boutique Alpha Violet has acquired Spanish filmmaker Victor Iriarte’s directorial debut, “Foremost by Night” (“Sobre Todo de Noche”).
Described as a noir story with a political background, “Foremost by Night” revolves around two women who meet for the first time, one who was forced to give up her newborn child for adoption when she was young, the other who, unable to bare children of her own, adopted a child she raised as her own.
The film, which stars Ana Torrent, Lola Dueñas and Manuel Egozkue, was among this year’s winners at the Malaga Film Festival’s Work in Progress awards, where it secured the Latido Films distribution prize and the Aracne Digital Cinema award for post production services.
The Spanish-Portuguese-French co-production was produced by Spain’s La Termita, Inicia Films, Atekaleun and Csc Films; Portugal’s Ukbar Filmes; and 4A4 Productions in France. The film also shot in all three countries,...

Nine more minutes of footage would take Pedro Almodóvar’s film “Strange Way of Life” from a live action short frontrunner to a best picture contender.
To be eligible for the Academy Awards’ best picture category, a film must have a minimum 40-minute runtime. Almodóvar’s movie runs 31 minutes. With those extra nine minutes, we could also highlight the worthiness of actors Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and the project’s artisan categories. But for his second English language endeavor, coming three years after “The Human Voice” with Tilda Swinton, the Spanish auteur’s sensibilities are never lacking. His new Spanish Western stands proudly next to some of his most audacious movies such as “Talk to Her” and “Volver.”
A rainy Wednesday in the south of France didn’t keep crowds of ticket rushers and fans from trying to get a glimpse of Almodóvar’s short film starring Pascal and Hawke.

If you’ve perused our summer movie preview you may already have a sense of what films to keep on your radar this month, but it’s time to dig deeper into May. While much of our attention will be on the Cannes Film Festival, plenty of worthwhile offerings arrive stateside.
15. The Starling Girl (Laurel Parmet; May 12)
After breaking out in Babyteeth and Little Women, Eliza Scanlen finds an impressive new starring role with The Starling Girl. Michael Frank said in his review, “Scanlen shines as Starling, playing someone much younger than herself. She brings an assurance to the role. We belive in Jem. She’s naive-yet-overconfident, isolated-yet-connected, carefree-yet-shackled by a system designed to believe the word of men much older than her. Scanlen shows all of that and more. Her performance grounds a film that risks blending together with preceding pictures, raising it above any average trappings.”

A selection at Venice Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival, Emanuele Crialese’s 1970s-set drama L’immensità follows Clara (Penélope Cruz) and her emotionally distant husband Felice (Vincenzo Amato) as they relocate to Rome to raise a family. Their eldest child, Andrew, isn’t fully able to discuss his transgender identity in a traditional society, and the film captures a coming-of-age tale as he blossoms under the guidance of his mother. Ahead of a release this May from Music Box Films, the new U.S. trailer has arrived.

The Cannes Film Festival has announced that Pedro Almodóvar’s short film Strange Way Of Life will world premiere at its upcoming 76th edition, running May 16 to 27.
The Western shot in southern Spain stars Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and is the filmmaker’s second English-language experience, after The Human Voice in 2020.
The film had been widely expected to play at Cannes after the director told singer-songwriter Dua Lipa that he expected it to premiere the festival in an interview for her At Your Service podcast in January.
The confirmation of the film’s selection comes as Cannes delegate general Thierry Frémaux and his team tie up the 2023 Official Selection ahead of the traditional line-up announcement in Paris on Thursday morning (April 13).
Other titles already confirmed by the festival include the Johnny Depp-starring opening film Jeanne du Barry by Maïwenn, Martin Scorsese’s The Killers Of The Flower Moon...

Mubi is adding over 50 features from the Sony Pictures’ library to its U.S. streaming service. The mix of studio and arthouse fare includes Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence, The Last Picture Show by Peter Bogdanovich and films from Wes Anderson, Pedro Almodovar and Guillermo Del Toro.
The company’s growing and global streaming service currently offers over 900 titles in the U.S., where it adds one new film to the platform daily. The Sony deal is a significant haul, especially since studios have become more aggressive in retaining content for their own services. Sony, uniquely, doesn’t have a streaming platform in-house.

To say director Emanuele Crialese’s camera falls in love with Cruz would be an understatement. She is lovingly shot and framed (even her Sophia Loren bob brings attention to her expressive eyes) and we don’t even need to hear her speak to know whoever’s gaze she’s under has completely fallen under her spell.

What does winning a prize at Cannes mean in the long run? It depends on which one — the Palme d’Or and acting prizes have more impact than any of the nine awards. For every Penélope Cruz in “Volver” or Rooney Mara in “Carol,” who went on to Oscar nominations, there’s a Renate Reinsve, who rode a surge of nominations for “Worst Person in the World,” but got no Oscar mention.
A Cannes prize can help a Screenplay winner like “Boy from Heaven” to land distribution, including in North America. And it boosts a film’s chances of being submitted for the Oscar by its home country, although neither Swedish-Egyptian filmmaker Tarik Saleh’s “Boy from Heaven” nor Iranian-Danish Ali Abbasi’s “Holy Spider,” which won Best Actress for Zar Amir Ebrahimi as a journalist fighting for justice for slain prostitutes, will be submitted by Egypt or Iran, respectively.

The 2022 Cannes Film Festival is nearing its conclusion, and soon the jury will be selecting awards for this year’s impressive, albeit quieter, slate of films. After last year’s “Titane” from Julia Ducournau made history as the first female-directed film to fully win the Palme d’Or (Jane Campion’s “The Piano” tied with “Farewell My Concubine” in 1993), at this point in the festival, it doesn’t seem likely that a woman-directed project will walk away with it this year.
“Forever Young” by French-Italian director Valeria Bruni Tedeschi seems to be the only film directed by a woman that has so far invoked any passion for bringing it to the finish line. Claire Denis’ “Stars at Noon,” Kelly Reichardt’s “Showing Up,” Leonor Serraille’s “Mother and Son” and Charlotte Vandermeersch and Felix van Groeningen’s “Eight Mountains” are the other titles directed by women among the 21 contending features.

“Is It future? Or is it past?”
When the One-Armed Man Mike (Al Strobel) posed that question to Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) in the second part of Twin Peaks: The Return, he may very well have been echoing the thoughts of the viewers. After all, Mike asked that question while sitting in the Red Room, the interdimensional waiting room that became the signature location during the original two-season run of Twin Peaks, and the 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. In fact, Cooper wore the exact same suit and tie combo, and sat in the same chair from the original series.
Before Cooper could answer, Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) entered the room, decked in the same black dress that she wore in the season two finale. Although MacLachlan and Lee had both clearly aged in the two and...

Tom Hanks, Jodie Comer, Olivia Colman, David Cronenberg and Richard Linklater head projects at a Cannes 2022 pre-sales market that looks like the most buoyant in recent years, while also ushering in what is being hailed as a new era in global rights licensing.
“We’re very optimistic, expecting a pretty busy market with a lot of titles, the first real market after the pandemic,” said Constantin Film’s Martin Moszkowicz.
“Several distributors have told me that this Cannes will be the biggest market for projects in several years — in volume and quality,” said Cecile Gaget at Anton, which is selling Jodie Comer-led apocalyptic thriller “The End We Start From.”
Multiple larger packages hit the market late last week. “People are conscious there could still be quite a lot to come in,” said Anne Cherel at Studiocanal, which over the weekend unveiled one hot project, comedy “Wicked Little Letters,” re-teaming Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.

An “English Patient” reunion is finally on the horizon, as co-stars Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes are attached for a new “gritty take” on the beloved ancient Greece tale Homer‘s “The Odyssey,” according to Variety. The original epic focuses on a war-wary husband that sets sail to return home to his wife and son after the Trojan War. However, Odysseus and his crew keep running into obstacles on that mission thanks to the gods, a giant cyclops, a witch that turns men into animals, and shipwrecking sirens that use their haunting songs to kill sailors.

"John never actually stopped filming." Disney has revealed the trailer for The Biggest Little Farm: The Return, a surprise "follow-up" sequel to the beloved documentary The Biggest Little Farm from 2018. I fell head-over-heels for this wonderful documentary a few years ago, and I'm glad so many watched it when it was initially released. To celebrate "Earth Day" this year, Disney was able to get farmer / filmmaker John Chester to make a 30-minute follow-up "The Return". It follows the farmers' (now) 10-year tireless journey as they transform the land into a magical working farm and film the whole process in this heartwarming special filled with animals. "This Earth Day, see how the farmers utilize the interconnectedness of nature to help build [+ nourish] soil health, maximize biodiversity, and regeneratively grow the most nutrient-dense food possible." At the end of the first 8 years, they were barely equilibrium, but as that film showed us, it's...

David Lynch never goes out of style. Ask any artist who’s worked with him, from Laura Dern to Patricia Arquette, they’ll tell you the Missoula native and Eagle Scout is a master filmmaker and an empathetic collaborator, with anyone he hires willing to follow his strange star down the rabbit hole together. And so, more than 20 years later, we’re still talking about movies like “Mulholland Drive.” While actresses like Dern, Naomi Watts, Grace Zabriskie, and Sheryl Lee are often thought of as Lynch’s muses, there’s one woman without whom the entire David Lynch universe wouldn’t be the same: Rebekah Del Rio.
The three-octave singer from Chula Vista, California, famously renders Roy Orbison’s wallowing breakup ballad “Crying” as a glorious a capella epic in Spanish, “Llorando,” during a pivotal “Mulholland Drive” scene that serves as the bridge from fantasy to reality nightmare. At the...

The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Actress are Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penélope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”), and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”). Our current odds indicate that Chastain (17/5) will take the prize, followed in order of probability by Colman (39/10), Kidman (4/1), Stewart (9/2), and Cruz (9/2).
Stewart is the only first-time nominee among the five, as each of her competitors has been involved in at least two past acting contests. Kidman’s resume is the longest, consisting of three previous lead bids for “Moulin Rouge!” (2002), “The Hours” (2003), and “Rabbit Hole” (2011) and a supporting one for “Lion” (2017). She triumphed on her second outing and is now looking to become the 15th woman to win a bookend Best Actress trophy.
Colman also has a shot at achieving a second lead victory, having prevailed here three years ago for “The Favourite.” Her second career nomination came...
