Exclusive: The novel Next to Heaven hit the market this week. Written by Anonymous, it’s a social satire that is being shopped by WME simultaneously for both a publishing deal and a TV deal. The TV deal has just closed, and the publishing deal will be next.
The rights to turn the book into a TV series were snapped up by former Agbo and Chernin executive Mike Larocca and Michael Schaefer for their as yet-unnamed production venture. They will produce with Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady (Game of Thrones). Schaefer most recently ran New Regency and produced The Martian.
So, who is Anonymous?
Deadline sniffed out that it is James Frey, known for A Million Little Pieces and many other literary works. Actually, this was not like cracking the case of the Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping. Lit scouts who read the novel quickly deciphered the mystery. Frey has a way...

This post contains spoilers for Baby Reindeer, which is now streaming on Netflix.
It takes less than two minutes into Netflix’s Baby Reindeer for the words “this is a true story” to appear onscreen. This simple phrase, when used in pop culture, adds an extra level of emotional weight that tales sold as wholly fictional don’t get: Sure, your imagination can invent something crazy, but can you believe this thing actually happened to someone?!?!

“Fifty Shades of Grey” director Sam Taylor-Johnson needed way more than just 50 days to regroup after the infamously “tough” production.
“Back to Black” helmer Taylor-Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter that directing the 2015 romance drama required her to take four years off of work. Taylor-Johnson admitted that she and novelist E.L. James had “diametrically opposed visions” on what the adaptation should be like. The feature was a critical failure but a box-office success, propelling lead stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan further into fame and spurring a trilogy.
“This was her book and she had a very particular vision of how she wanted to see this film,” Taylor-Johnson said of James. “And I had a diametrically opposed vision. Where we got to is where we got to. The success of it was great, but the experience of it was tough.”
Taylor-Johnson added, “It took me about four years to regain my confidence and composure.

When Sam Taylor-Johnson started working on her Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, she asked screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh to listen to one of Winehouse’s tracks, “Tears Dry on Their Own,” before he started writing. “I kept saying in those early days, ‘I feel like this song is our path to understanding her,’ ” Taylor-Johnson says.
In the deceptively upbeat single about Winehouse’s tumultuous relationship with her on-again, off-again love, Blake Fielder-Civil, she sings, “It’s my responsibility/And you don’t owe nothing to me.”
For Taylor-Johnson, 57, that line spoke to something largely misunderstood about Winehouse, the English singer who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011: Just 27, she left behind an outsize cultural impact. Winehouse’s defining album, Back to Black, sold more than 16 million copies worldwide, and her unique mix of jazz and soul with punk-era defiance would go on to influence artists like Adele, Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish.

Sam Taylor-Johnson’s best film to date is more interested in romance and creativity than demons or blame
‘Her demons were probably worse’: does Back to Black reveal the real Amy Winehouse?
The last time Sam Taylor-Johnson directed a movie about drugs it was A Million Little Pieces in 2019, based on James Frey’s notoriously inauthentic memoir of addiction – and the last time she made a film about a music legend it was Nowhere Boy in 2009, about John Lennon.
Now she brings the two together in what’s easily her best work so far: an urgent, warm, heartfelt dramatisation, scripted by Matt Greenhalgh, of the life of Amy Winehouse, the brilliant London soul singer who died of alcohol poisoning at 27 in 2011. It’s a movie with the simplicity, even the naivety, of a fan-tribute. But there’s a thoroughly engaging and sweet-natured performance from Marisa Abela as Amy – though...

Sam Taylor-Johnson is certainly good with all of this her-husband-as-next-Bond talk. After all, if Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the next 007, she may be the next director of a Bond film. And if so, she’d be the first female filmmaker within the storied James Bond franchise.
On “The Johnathan Ross Show,” when asked if Aaron will play 007, the “Back to Black” director had another idea — or at least a second idea.
“You mean that I might direct a Bond film? The first woman director,” Sam said (via Deadline). “Carry on speculating.”
She added of Aaron, “He’d be great.”
Sam has already directed her husband in two feature films: “Nowhere Boy” (2009) and “A Million Little Pieces” (2018). And she knows her cinema history: In the half-century Bond franchise, there has never been a film installment directed by a woman. Another Sam (Mendes) addressed this very issue in 2022, telling Deadline that the “director...

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been the subject of James Bond casting rumors this month and now his wife Sam Taylor-Johnson is the latest person to weigh in on the reports.
Sam, who is an award-winning director, was asked about the speculation during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show in the UK this week.

[This story contains spoilers from American Fiction.]
It’s not often that a filmmaker gets to premiere their project to an audience they’ve set their hyperspecific comedic sights on. But it’s an experience first-time director Cord Jefferson can now claim after his new film, American Fiction, made its east coast debut at the Hamptons International Film Festival this past weekend.
At one point in the film, Jeffrey Wright’s Monk — an author and professor who has become increasingly frustrated with the suffocating, microaggressive treatment of his work and his Blackness amid the rise of a fellow writer’s success — admits that white people in the Hamptons are going to eat up his new book, “My Pafology.”
The kicker is that the book is an entirely made-up, satirical take on Black life. It’s written by Monk under a pseudonym, which is attached to the identity of a (fictional) formerly incarcerated man who intentionally embodies racially...

Eli Roth is looking to make 2023 a prolific year for horror, at least on his terms. In addition to the release of Thanksgiving – which we’ve been waiting to see for more than 15 years now –he is also behind the upcoming animated series Fright Krewe. Now, we have a trailer for that DreamWorks production.
While there is blood, voodoo, the undead, and more in the trailer, that Fright Krewe is an animated series and comes from the company that brought us Shrek and that little boy fishing from the moon shows that Eli Roth is ready to broaden his horror horizons. And whether you like his movies or not, Roth is one of the foremost historians of the genre and does objectively deserve respect in that regard. But can he handle animation?

Genre regular Eli Roth has another horror project coming our way – but this one won’t be nearly as brutal or bloody as the likes of Cabin Fever or Hostel. Instead, it’s some “gateway horror” entertainment that comes in the form of an animated series called Fright Krewe. Said to be aimed at “older children”, the first season of Fright Krewe will consist of ten episodes that will be released through both the Hulu and Peacock streaming services. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
The Wrap reports that Roth has teamed up with Dreamworks and author James Frey to bring this series to the screen – and they also point out that Frey is a rather controversial figure. His books A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard were initially marketed as memoirs, but it was soon revealed that large portions of them were either exaggerated or made up.

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

Another month means another streaming service overhaul: prepare for another round of disappearing movies and TV shows, just when you were finally gearing up to watch them. But on the bright side, that also means a bunch of new titles coming in to fill that void. As always, Hulu has plenty of titles — both old and new — to make sure it remains one of the dozen subscription services we all keep paying for.
Among the incoming titles are three different series set to close things out with their finale seasons: Hulu's widely acclaimed "Wu-Tang: An American Saga," the FX crime drama "Snowfall" and the recently canceled ABC drama, "A Million Little Pieces." The streamer is also daring to give Netflix a run for its money when it comes to the world of true crime docuseries. Shia Labeouf grew up in front of cameras. The actor made his acting debut at age 12 in an episode of "Caroline in the City" before getting a main role in the Disney Channel sitcom "Even Stevens," which lasted for 65 episodes and a movie. Say what you will about his personal life, his stunts, or his career, but he still was the star of an "Indiana Jones" movie, for better and worse. But before he played Indy's son, he was a child actor, with all the problems that come with the territory.
The reality of child stars is a difficult one, as people like Jennette McCurdy ("iCarly") have reminded us in recent times. Abuse by loved ones and by a cold, calculating industry aren't out of the ordinary, unfortunately, and Labeouf used his own experiences as a child actor to write the pseudo-autobiographical Sundance darling "Honey Boy."

ABC likes to have a sudsy primetime soap on its midseason roster, and Promised Land looks like a winner.
In the past, we've had one-and-done but highly watchable shows like Grand Hotel and The Baker and the Beauty, so we're hoping Promised Land stands the test of time.
The series is an epic, generation-spanning drama about two Latinx families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley.
The first trailer dropped at the network's panel during the Winter TCA tour, and there was another big announcement regarding the series:
The first two episodes will be available on Hulu the day after the series premiere on ABC, marking the first time ABC programming will be released on Hulu before debuting on the network.
The series premieres Monday, Jan. 24 (10:01-11:00 p.m. Est), on ABC, out of The Bachelor.
Will Promised Land and The Bachelor be a match made in TV heaven?...

It was a big night for multiple winner Daddy Yankee at the Premio Lo Nuestro awards, and it was a very big night for Univision.
Taking over the Spanish-language network’s entire primetime, the 32nd annual Latin music show was a star-studded night with Ricky Martin, Natti Natasha, J Balvin, Sebastián Yatra, Christian Nodal, Chiquis Rivera and Canada’s Snow. There also was a surprise appearance as co-host Pitbull was joined by fellow shaved-head pal John Travolta at the Miami-based shindig — with Chesca and Lil Jon coming onstage later too.

A first date spirals out of control after the pair are pulled over by a racist cop in this sexy, exuberant and anarchic drama
Big, charismatic performances and exuberant energy keep this movie on the road. It’s a serio-comic Bonnie-and-Clyde adventure, written by Lena Waithe and James Frey (still notorious for his faux memoir A Million Little Pieces) and directed by former music video specialist Melinda Matsoukas.
Daniel Kaluuya brings his seductive air of politely quizzical irony to the role of Slim, a guy who has managed to get a Tinder date with someone way out of his league. This is a beautiful, smart lawyer named Queen, played by Jodie Turner-Smith, who is richer and taller than he is – though this latter disparity is never remarked on – and only went out with him on a whim because his profile picture was so appealingly pathetic. Driving her home after their highly uncomfortable dinner,...

Aaron, 29, and Sam Taylor-Johnson, 52, are no strangers to working together, having met making Sam’s directorial debut Nowhere Boy in 2009 — but adapting James Frey’s controversial 2003 book A Million Little Pieces marked challenging new territory for the married couple.
The film adaptation of Frey’s addiction memoir, which he later admitted to partly fabricating, sees Aaron go to some very dark places to play a young drug-addled writer as he undergoes a grueling two-month detox program.
Below are excepts from People’s conversation with the pair, who wed in 2012 and have two daughters together now, in addition to two from Sam’s previous marriage.
