Hinton Battle, the Tony-winning performer who originated the role of The Scarecrow in Broadway’s The Wiz, has died. He was 67.
The actor died Tuesday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles following a lengthy illness. In a statement, a rep told The Hollywood Reporter that his family has no plans to disclose his cause of death.
Battle made his Broadway debut in the original production of Broadway’s The Wiz and then won three Tonys — all in the category of featured actor in a musical — for his work in Sophisticated Ladies (1981), The Tap Dance Kid (1984) and Miss Saigon (1991). An NAACP Image Award winner, the actor, director, producer and choreographer was also a SAG and Critics Choice nominee, honored for his work as part of the ensemble of 2007’s movie musical Dreamgirls.

André 3000 has announced the release of his long-awaited debut album, New Blue Sun, which will arrive on November 17th.
Right up front, however the OutKast rapper warns fans that the album is not a rap record. The cover artwork says as much, as it includes a label warning that the album contains “no bars.” Instead, according to NPR Music, New Blue Sun is an 87-minute collection of minimalist and experimental music featuring André 3000 playing a variety of flutes and other wind instruments. There are no bars, no beats, no vocals.
“I don’t want to troll people. I don’t want people to think, Oh, this André 3000 album is coming! And you play it and like, ‘Oh man, no verses,’ André 3000 said in an interview with NPR. “So even actually on the packaging, you’ll see it says, ‘Warning: no bars.’ It’s letting you know what it is off the top.

Tierra Whack's fate in hip-hop was set the moment she entered the world on Aug. 11, 1995 - the same day the culture was born 22 years prior. The North Philadelphia native turned heads thanks to a YouTube freestyle that went viral when she was just 15 years old and known as Dizzle Dizz. The breakout moment was a culmination of Whack's early years, studying all she could about rap and finding inspiration in iconic albums like Outkast's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" and Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP." Years later, she'd emerge with her own acclaim as one of the most promising lyricists of her generation.
Whack's 15-minute debut album "Whack World," released in May 2018, skyrocketed her to superstardom, taking the rap sensation to global stages and new heights in hip-hop. And today, she's grateful for how it all blessed her career. In Netflix's "Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" docuseries,...

André 3000 has a new album on the way, if longtime OutKast affiliate Killer Mike is to be believed.
In a recent interview with Sway in the Morning, Killer Mike revealed André played him a bunch of new tracks after coming by to check out Mike’s latest album, Michael, while it was being recorded. This led to Dre appearing on “Scientists & Engineers,” a Dungeon Family reunion also featuring Future.
“He played like nine, 10 joints for us and he said, ‘Well, just pick what you like and do something with it,'” Mike remembered, adding that André has often turned down offers to collaborate “over the past decade” by saying, “I’m not into rapping right now.”
Apparently, André was in a completely different headspace this time around and actually gave Mike two records, one of which is “like 11 minutes long” and features a seven-minute verse from Three Stacks. André...

Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. They have one assignment: assassinate Nazi leaders. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the unconventional war drama. Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Walz co-star.
Watch the trailer of “Inglourious Basterds”:
The network is also streaming the original documentary “Mystery Unsolved: The Adnan Syed Story” on June 7. The murder of teenager Hae Min Lee was the focal point of a “Serial” podcast, which questioned if boyfriend Syed was her killer. After serving 22 years in prison, Syed was released, still proclaiming his innocence. Now, he may return.
Another streamer original, “Magic Carpet Rides,” arrives June 14. It centers on a social influencer torn between sharing her budding romance or honoring her boyfriend’s request to keep their life private.

The Grammys have a weird relationship with hip-hop. For decades, one of the biggest complaints about the Grammys has been that they constantly relegate hip-hop artists to wins in the rap field, despite them getting general field nominations and oftentimes being the most nominated artists of the year. But the Grammys don’t always snub hip-hop in the general categories. We’ve seen multiple rappers win Best New Artist, including recently Megan Thee Stallion in 2021. Furthermore, it was not too long ago when the first hip-hop song won Record and Song of the Year: Childish Gambino’s “This Is America.” However, when it comes to Album of the Year, the genre only has one win: OutKast’s “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” 18 years ago.
OutKast’s road to the top Grammy honor was, in hindsight, much smoother than you might think given the usual anti-hip-hop bias at the academy. “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,...

Rock ‘n’ roll bands, we’re told, are the closest and most combative of families. They come up in the world together, they eat and sleep and ride a tour bus together, they haunt the recording studio together, they become experts in how to manipulate (and shield themselves from) the media together, and, in a funny way, they break up together. But in 1970, Joe Cocker fronted a band of virtuoso ruffians called Mad Dogs & Englishmen, who put on some of the most musically rambunctious and cathartic concerts of their time, and the strange thing is that the band members barely knew each other.
In 1969, Cocker had made a splash at Woodstock — it was the first time almost anyone had seen his writhing British blues-dog self — and after riding that buzz for a while, he fired his band out from under him and tried to take a break. But an American...

Even if you haven’t heard of White Dave before, chances are you’ve listened to one of his songs.
The Bay Area-born rapper and producer has earned track placements in the critically-acclaimed films “Black Panther” and “Creed,” and is featured in the official “Inspired Album” for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” which is up for best picture at this year’s Oscars.
Dave, whose birth name is Noah David Coogler, acknowledges that the placements are a combination of talent and the family business — his older brother is director Ryan Coogler, who helmed “Black Panther” and “Creed.”
“I’ve been creating music for my brother’s movies since he started making films. For me, it’s still that basic element of, I’m doing something to help my brother,” Dave tells Variety. “It doesn’t matter if it’s for a big budget film or for something he shot with a camcorder,...

Kate: It’s not meant to be.Alex: No. Don’t say that. Something must’ve happened.A decade and a half is not really long enough to commemorate a film’s anniversary—but then again, bogus nostalgia for the immediate past is the main engine of pop culture discourse today. So here’s a wild proposition: what if 2006 was the last great year for adventurous, bigger-budget movies? It’s impossible to answer, of course, but consider these studio releases: Marie-Antoinette, Children of Men, Southland Tales, Clint Eastwood’s Iwo Jima diptych, Inside Man, Miami Vice, Idlewild, Crank, Idiocracy, The Holiday, The Black Dahlia. Millions were spent on bizarre highbrow and/or vanity projects like Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep, Soderbergh’s The Good German, Tommy Lee Jones’ (phenomenal) The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, or Ryan Murphy’s (excruciating) Running With Scissors. Emmy- and Tony-winning actress Cicely Tyson, who distinguished herself in theater, film and television, died on Thursday afternoon. She was 96.
“I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing,” her manager, Larry Thompson, said in a statement. “Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Today she placed the last ornament, a Star, on top of the tree.”
Her memoir “Just As I Am” was published on Tuesday.
Tyson broke into movies with the 1959 Harry Belafonte film “Odds Against Tomorrow,” followed by “The Comedians,” “The Last Angry Man,” “A Man Called Adam” and “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” Refusing to participate in the blaxploitation movies that became popular in the late ’60s, she waited until 1972 to return to the screen in the drama “Sounder,” which captured several...

With the 2021 Grammy nominations came a slew of critiques against the awards, mostly for their notable omissions. Over the past few years concerns for the integrity of the recording academy have been raised. With all of this in mind, we have to ask, what can be fixed and what should be addressed?
Complaints that the Grammys are corrupt or suffer from conflicts of interest aren’t new. Last year HitsDailyDouble reported that industry insiders were upset by the lack of nominations for certain artists in the country genre, particularly Maren Morris (who seemed like a strong contender to win Best Country Album for “Girl” before noms came out), and pointed to the possibility that the snub might have been due to Morris’s Playboy magazine appearance.

Although it still has a long way to go to catch up to Netflix, HBO Max is gradually building a reputation for both an impressive library of content and its own original programming. Ava DuVernay, Tyler Perry, Viola Davis, Lee Daniels and many more industry luminaries today paid tribute to Charles Gregory Ross after the Emmy-nominated hairstylist lost his battle with the coronavirus yesterday.

Roseanne may have been canceled by ABC just over a week ago after its star let loose online with racist tweets, but this week TV Academy members are receiving magazines in the mail that are playing catch-up with the still-smoldering fiasco.
“Shortly before this issue was to be mailed, ABC canceled Roseanne,” says a note from the TV Academy that was included with the latest copy of Emmy Magazine. “This issue includes a brief reference to the show in a profile of ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey (page 120) without this additional context,” the correspondence torpidly adds. “The digital version of the magazine has been updated to include this new information.”
With a one-page New York Times-quoting ad for Roseanne’s now-abandoned Fyc campaign also in the glossy publication, “brief reference” is a bit of an evasion in relation to what is actually said in the four-page ingratiating Dungey piece.

The status of Kenya Barris’ future with Disney-ABC is still uncertain but we know for sure that the Black-ish executive producer will not be going to trial over the Emmy nominated sitcom.
With a June 11 start date set for the courtroom drama, Barris and his former writing partner Bryan Barber have reached a settlement in the one and half year-old dispute. “This entire case is settled,” said documents filed in La Superior Court late last month by the Barber’s attorney Kenneth Ingber. “A request for dismissal will be filed within 45 days after the settlement,” the short notice of May 23 added (read it here).
No details of the confidential settlement were disclosed in the filing but Deadline has learned that all sides were indeed eager to see the matter concluded. This occurred a week after the Black-ish Season 4 finale aired and as Barris’ contract talks with ABC Studios continue.

There hasn’t been a proper OutKast release since 2000's Stankonia. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below was a pair of solo albums connected at the hip, and Idlewild was odds and sods and a great Lil Wayne verse—not exactly the return of the player and the poet. They’ve teased a return to straight rap called 10 The Hard Way…

Before the Haze: Ridley’s Nuanced Portrait Worthy of Legendary Subject
After a rather cool reception following high profile festival play at Toronto and SXSW, John Ridley’s Jimi Hendrix biopic, Jimi: All is By My Side will be sure to garner a divisive response upon a theatrical release as well. Unable to acquire the rights to any of his music from the Hendrix estate, those looking for an audio celebration of the legend’s greatest hits will surely be disappointed. Likewise, Ridley, who wrote the screenplay and won an Oscar for 2013 Best Picture Winner 12 Years a Slave, does something even more daring by covering a specific period in Hendrix’s life, paring down the scope for what becomes a startlingly intimate glance at the man’s demeanor and philosophies. While liberties have arguably been taken (Kathy Etchingham has quite vocally railed against the film), gripes considering the presentation of...

Though you might know André Benjamin better as his chart-topping alter ego Andre 3000, one-half of the hip-hop duo OutKast, he's also ventured onto the big screen with roles in films like Four Brothers, Idlewild, Semi-Pro and Be Cool. Now he's taking a big step with a lead role in Jimi: All is By My Side, a biopic about rock legend Jimi Hendrix, one of the best guitarists the world has ever seen. And now we have a trailer showing off Benjamin's impressive transformation into Hendrix. But could it be good enough for Oscar? Watch below! For a while, it seemed like an Outkast reunion was never going to happen. After dropping the soundtrack for Idlewild together in 2006, no other official project from the Grammy-winning duo followed. They stopped performing together, and essentially went silent, much to the chagrin of fans. They crushed hopes of a reunion even more when Antwan "Big Boi" Patton dropped solo albums in 2010 and 2012, and talks of André "3000" Benjamin's solo LP weren't far behind. Over the years, they were featured so much on other artists tracks, like André on Frank Ocean's "Pink Matter" and Big Boi on Killer Mike's "Ready Set Go," that it made us crave the days they rapped...

It's been seven years since Outkast bandmates Big Boi and Andre 3000 parted ways, but the pair is reportedly slated to unite in next year.
According to Billboard magazine, the pair is ending their hiatus at the Indio, California Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in upcoming April, 2014.
A source told the publication that there has been "some conversations" about Andre and Big Boi deciding to make a reunion happen while another insider stated that "all systems are go."
Although it sounds as though things are in place for the reunion, Andre might have had second thoughts. Earlier this year, the rapper told Spin magazine that fans shouldn't be surprised if the pair doesn't make a joint appearance on Frank Ocean's "Pink Matter" remix as an official come back.
"I was approached as a solo artist by both Frank Ocean & Tip. I discussed musical direction with each other’s and completed my verses.

André Lauren Benjamin, unlike his Outkast buddy Big Boi, has never released a solo album. But over the weekend, Bet executive Stephen Hill tweeted the following, presumably from an interview or regular ol' conversation: "Me: hey what's up? You got the movie coming, right? Andre 3000: yeah...and I got a solo album coming top of the year." The movie in question is All Is by My Side, André's Jimi Hendrix biopic, which actually isn't allowed to feature any official Hendrix music. So it stands to reason that Three Stacks wrote some tracks for the film and then got a studio groove going and wrote a bunch more, right? It also stands to reason that he's just amassed a bunch of songs since Outkast's Idlewild dropped in 2006 and sees no reason not to use the movie's arrival as extra publicity for an album. Alas, Billboard hit up André's publicist...

The hip hop duo known as Outkast hasn't released an official album since 2003, but that doesn't mean André 3000 and Big Boi aren't interested in collaborating again in the future.
On HuffPost Live Friday, rapper Big Boi noted that he and André 3000 are still best friends and hang out with each other regularly.

Ask most Outkast fans and you’ll hear the same story: The legendary Atlanta hip-hop duo, made up of Antwan "Big Boi" Patton and André "3000" Benjamin, has not released a proper album since 2000's Stankonia (2003's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below might as well be considered each of the rapper's solo debuts, and 2006's Idlewild, well, most would like to pretend that never happened). In the meantime, amid continued "will-Outkast-ever-record-together-again" chatter, Big Boi has successfully struck out on his own — first with 2010's brilliant Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, and now again with his latest LP, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. Vulture talked to him ahead of the December 11 release about Obama's pimp game and Brazilian waxes. The album is titled Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. New York -- In order to capture his best version of Jimi Hendrix for an upcoming biopic, Andre 3000 said he had to think of him as a regular dude and not a rock star.
"I didn't look at him as an icon because when you're in it, you don't know you're an icon. You don't know you're an icon until another people say you're an icon," the 37-year-old said in an interview Tuesday.
"So I had to take it as a person, you know what I mean? And I just tried to say, `Well, what would Jimi want people to know that they can't get off of YouTube?' And that's how I approached it," he said.
Hendrix died at age 27 in 1970. He was ranked No. 1 on Rolling Stone magazine's greatest guitarists of all-time list. His band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, is known for iconic albums such as "Electric Ladyland" and "Are You Experienced.

Red Tails scribe John Ridley will be making his directorial debut, featuring André '3000' Benjamin from hip hop duo OutKast, as legendary guitar maestro Jimi Hendrix. Benjamin has been a big presence in developing the feature, according to Iftn [via Geek Tyrant], centering on the musician's time in England in the late 1960s, working on his now famous debut album Are You Experienced. It took Hendrix five months to record the album, which finally debuted in 1967. Production on All Is by My Side is expected to get underway in Ireland for six months in late May. This won't be Benjamin's first film as he's made appearances in Be Cool, Four Brothers, Revolver, Idlewild, Battle in Seattle, and Semi-Pro. He seems perfectly suited for the part...

First of several mooted Hendrix movies gets the green light
Jimi Hendrix is to be played by OutKast's André 3000 in a new biopic. Despite a prior dispute with the guitarist's estate, the movie will reportedly begin shooting in Ireland later this month.
To the surprise of many industry observers, All Is By My Side is currently in pre-production, the Irish Film and Television Network reports. André 3000 will spend six weeks at locations in Bray, Dun Laoghaire and Dublin, including the historic John Player Cigarette Factory. The film is to be directed by Three Kings writer John Ridley, who also wrote the screenplay, and deals with Hendrix's breakthrough in 1966, when he was discovered in a New York club by Linda Keith, then girlfriend of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
Several studios have tried to make Hendrix-related films over the last few years, including a failed project by Paul Greengrass.

Outkast's Andre Benjamin, aka Andre 3000, is developing and set to star in a biopic about legendary guitar player Jimi Hendrix. The film is titled All Is By My Side and is slated to start filming in Ireland later this month. Iftn reports (via FirstShowing) that the story will focus on Hendrix's time in England between 1966 and 1967 when he worked on his debut album, Are You Experienced.
John Ridley is making his feature directing debut. Producing is Tristan Orpen Lynch at Subotica Entertainment, Richard Kelly’s Darko Entertainment, and Britain's Matador Pictures. Ridley penned scripts for Three Kings, Undercover Brother, Barbershop, and Red Tails.
Benjamin has not been on the big screen since 2008, after starring in Be Cool, Four Brothers, Revolver, Idlewild, Battle in Seattle, and Semi-Pro. As a musician, he knows first-hand what it is like to be on stage. That, coupled with his uncanny resemblance to Hendrix, makes him a great casting choice.

Terrence Howard has settled a dispute with Victoria Fredrick, who alleged in a lawsuit last year that she acted as the actor's personal manager and was owed commissions. In a complaint filed in Pennsylvania federal court, Fredrick said that she became Howard's personal manager in 2005 and that an agreement entitled her to 10 percent of Howard's earnings in the entertainment industry. Fredrick demanded her allegedly owed portion from Howard's $1.75 million payday for Fightin, $1 million salary for Winnie, and further commissions for his work on such films as Hustle n Flow, Idlewild and Iron Man. Howard disputed
