In his new book, It’s All Relative: Adventures Up and Down the World’s Family Tree, journalist A.J. Jacobs recounts his investigation into the DNA and histories that link almost every human on the planet. His deep dive led him to meet some very famous — and very extended —cousins, including Olivia Wilde and President George H.W. Bush.
“We were all told since we were kids that humans are all one big family, but now it’s so concrete you can actually see how we’re all related to almost anyone on earth,” Jacobs tells People in an exclusive interview.

Sundance is over and the prizes are won. People have dispersed to their homes and the realities that await them there.
This was a Sundance like no other I can remember, and I have attended every single one since 1986! The cold was extreme; and the political engagement and disgust was extreme. Not only did we have the Inauguration the first day, but the Women’s March the second day had probably 6,000 people marching and on that day the first of many deplorable executive orders (this one against women of the world and their control over their own bodies) began flying off the desk of our current president, who has continued to issue at least one every day, each one more despicable than the previous. Politics and women took center stage.

Just a few short hours after making everyone melt with his heartfelt speech for Rihanna at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, Drake posted a cuddly selfie with the "Work" singer on Instagram. Not only does he give her a sweet peck on the cheek in the snap, but he continues to sing her praises. "This is a night for us all to be thankful for what you have done for us!" he captioned the photo. "You have affected so many of our lives in the best way possible. Tonight we celebrate you! @badgalriri" The two shared the stage at Madison Square Garden earlier in the night when he presented Rihanna with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, telling the audience, "She's someone I've been in love with since I was 22 years old." After holding hands while walking offstage, they then ended the night by hitting up Rihanna's...

Though the main roster of WWE 2K16 is a stunningly diverse affair, it was inevitable that some fans would be unhappy with the missing faces, who’ve ranged from the inevitable (Hulk Hogan) to the entirely confusing (Road Dogg). But that’s where the Caw community comes in, offering fans the chance to bring back banned legends, former stars with WWE contracts elsewhere and fantasy characters who’d never get anywhere near the ring in real life.
Luckily, the community also self-moderates thanks to its in-built appraisal system: like Youtube’s much manipulated Thumbs Up and Down model, the best content attracts the most positive responses. Up and down the line, the 19th annual Hollywood Film Awards have made tremendous selections this year, but I’m not sure any are as pleasing to me as Amy Schumer receiving the Hollywood Comedy Award. Her film Trainwreck is not just the funniest of 2015 so far, it’s among the best movies of the year in general. This is a great way to honor her, considering she delivers not only a terrific comedic performance, she also penned the hilarious screenplay. Schumer is going to win plenty of awards over the course of her career, but this certainly doesn’t hurt the Trainwreck campaign for Oscar attention. We’ll see if the Academy notices her, but I’m thrilled that the Hollywood Film Awards have seen fit to do so here… Here’s part of the press release once again announcing this honor: Amy Schumer Set to Receive “Hollywood Comedy...

Here is the first installment of “Comics Mythos”, a semi-regular column about the literary and mythological roots of comic book characters (mostly superheroes). This article will look at the powerhouses of comics, or the “supermen”. (After the Big Blue Boy Scout, not Friedrich Nietzsche’s “Ubermensch”.)
In the world of superheroes, it seems that feats of physical strength and acrobatic prowess are possibly the most prevalent demonstration of super powers. One must wonder if such physical powers are a product of the time in which these comics were originally produced – the 1930s for DC’s iconic Superman and 1941 for Marvel’s super soldier, Captain America – or does this sort of hero have roots that extend deeper into literary history. Obviously, mythology is full of heroes who have superhuman strength, stamina, and agility with Thor and Hercules being the most famous in the world of comics for their huge roles in...

However, speaking at Channel 4's factual showcase last night, Rhodes admitted that he was shocked at the state of music lessons in the country and hit out at Gove, the secretary of state for education.

It turns out Justin Bieber may not have been behind the wheel of that Ferrari that was driving recklessly after all. It all started on Memorial Day when neighbors called the police on Beiber, including NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, to report the pop singer was driving way too fast through his gated community.
Cops reportedly responded to the call, but Bieber wouldn't speak with them. However, his security team told police that it was actually Tyler, the Creator, the front man for Odd Future, behind the wheel.
Tyler is backing that story up himself. In a tweet on June 1, the rapper writes, "That Was Me Behind The Wheel Of Justins Vehicle. Don't Blame Him. People Are Actually Evil Swearing Up And Down That It Was Who It Wasnt."
Bieber later responded, tweeting, "all good buddy. i deal with this everyday. thanks though. the baby aint mine either."

Cannes, France — The annual Cannes festival on the French Riviera is the grandest platform in the world for the highest ambitions of film, a place where the art form is worshipped with wild passion and adoring reverence. Movies are projected pristinely in regal theaters, where they're greeted by the world's cinephiles with feverish excitement.
But even at this bastion of the big screen, director after director has come through preaching the opportunities of the small screen. Up and down the Croisette, talk of TV's ascendance is rampant.

"It's opened up a whole new arena."

Once upon a time, there used to be a guaranteed present for the young Doctor Who fan in the house. Christmases, birthdays – any Doctor Who aficionado under the age of 12 would have received at least one Doctor Who annual. These booky bits of nostalgia would normally comprise a hastily assembled photo montage cover, a comic strip and some perfectly serviceable if insubstantial bite-sized short stories. If you're ever down at a car boot sale, look out for the tale called The Penalty from the 1982 Davison edition, in which The Doctor lives out his worst nightmare – it's a cracker.
The latest Doctor Who story curiously reminded me of one of those old Doctor Who Annual tales. Hide was perfectly serviceable, but ultimately insubstantial – a forgettable bit of ghostly fluff. Nab chief Gordon Smith told station owners today that they must redouble their efforts to persuade tech companies to build TV and radio receivers into smartphones and other mobile devices. Internet streaming services “will never have what we have — the ability to deliver our high quality content reliably,” Smith said in his keynote speech at the Nab confab in Las Vegas. But he adds that broadcasters who want to beam signals directly to mobile devices ”must continue to rise up to meet consumer’s desire for more live, local TV content.” He added that stations should “seriously consider the challenges and opportunities of moving to a new standard” that would enable them to “compete in a mobile world, and find new revenue streams.” Hurricane Sandy helped to make a case for adding radio to mobile devices. “Up and down the Eastern seaboard, we heard stories of cell networks and broadband connections being down for days,...

Well, her sister Jamie Lynn Spears' daughter Maddie took us back in time and dressed up as her famous aunt for "Celebrity Day" at school.
Jamie Lynn posted a picture of her adorable daughter on Instagram today, writing, "Guess who Maddie want[ed] to [be] for Celebrity Day at school! #HomecomingWeek."
In the photo, Maddie is sporting pig tails with feather hair ties and bows, a checkered skirt, knee-high socks, a white tank top and even a cropped sweater. Of course, the 4-year-old didn't dress as risque as auntie Brit did in the music video, but she's still the spitting image of the pop star.

The action film star reveals how Stallone, marriage to a good woman and dogs pulled him back from the drug-fuelled brink
Where is Jean-Claude Van Damme? We were supposed to meet in London, until he cancelled his trip at the last minute. Then I was to visit him on a film set in Budapest, but that fell through when he wrapped his scenes early, and so he invited me instead to his parents' home in Belgium, only to go missing in action for 24 hours in the middle of negotiations. None of this is too surprising; after all, this is the self-sabotaging prima donna action star who rose in the 80s and ignominiously nose-dived in the 90s, having burned all his bridges in Hollywood.
And then, as I'm beginning to give up hope, he calls. "I just finished two movies back-to-back," he says apologetically. "When you finish a film, if you believed in your character,...

The words to their 2005 hit 'My Humps' were chosen as "the most ridiculous" in a survey conducted by Global Gathering festival. The lyrics of the song, which include: "My hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, My hump, my hump, my hump, my lovely little lumps," topped the poll with 22% of the vote. German techno collective Scooter took second place at 18% with 'Nassaja', where they sing: "It's not a bird, it's not a plane. It must be Dave who's on the train," while Vengaboys completed the top three with their 1998 song 'Up and Down'. Nicki Minaj's 'Starships' finished fifth with "Jump in my hooptie hooptie hoop, I own that", and The Tamperer ft. Maya's 'Feel It' took (more)...

Small dogs occasionally get a bad rap, but apparently size mattered when it came to the pups that survived the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912.
"The dogs that survived were so small that it's doubtful anyone even realized they were being carried to the lifeboats," J. Joseph Edgette, curator of a Widener University exhibit that will feature the dogs of the Titanic, tells Yahoo. "Two were Pomeranians and the third was a Pekingese, all tiny dogs."
Eyewitness accounts and the ship's records indicate there were 12 dogs on board the Titanic. And normally, there would have been at least one cat on the ship to keep the rat population down, but some reports say the Titanic's mouser may have had a vision of what was to come.
"It's said that there was a cat with young kittens aboard the sea trials of the Titanic but when the ship arrived in Southampton from Belfast,...

Ron Perlman has been a force in television and film for three decades. He’s no stranger to fans, especially those he won as Hellboy and as Clay Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, and he’s appeared in a handful of movies every year since 1993 (with 1996 and 1999 being the only years he appeared in only one). You know him. You love him. Now, we’re ready to pronounce 2011 The Year of The Perlman because while he’s worked steadily in movies small and big alike for a long time, this was the year that he really ate his spinach and showed his face in an almost absurd amount of flicks. What’s more, his performances spanned the quality spectrum enough to earn him the Shyamalan Award For Bizarrely Up and Down Work. It’s important to note that his acting was rock steady throughout, but even with (and with the addition of his talents), he was in...

Former Czech Republic president Václav Havel died from respiratory problems earlier today. Havel, who had been a heavy smoker, was 75.
Besides his role as a political dissident during the Communist regime and as a representative of Czechoslovakia's transition from Communist rule to economically and politically troubled constitutional democracy, Havel was also a playwright.
A number of his plays were filmed for television throughout the '80s and '90s. In 2011, Havel himself directed for the big screen an adaptation of his play Leaving, which was released in the Czech Republic in March. Making clear allusions to Havel himself and to his nemesis and successor, Czech president Vaclav Klaus, Leaving is a dramatic comedy about a once-popular chancellor (played by veteran Josef Abrhám) whose fortunes have taken a dramatic turn for the worse. As a result, he must vacate his posh official residence so his successor, Vlastik Klein (Jaroslav Dusek), can move in.

A few months back, Blizzard mentioned that there were looking for console developers for "Diablo 3." When reached for further comment, Blizzard reps clarified that this was not the official confirmation that the game would be coming to consoles, and that they were just having an "investigation" into whether the series would work on 360 or PS3. Lucky for Blizzard, Runic Games seems to have done all the investigation for them, as the Xbla version of "Torchlight" clearly proves that a top-down, loot-heavy, hack-and-slash RPG can work wonders on consoles.

This. This is why I love Facebook* - crowdsourcing. I post on a Thursday afternoon that I'm looking for a book suggestion and get a few suggestions. And Then Yossarian posts Big Machine by Victor Lavalle.
Hol-eee cow! I was hooked right away, and it definitely lived up to my request for a page-turner. After finishing it, I posted that I really loved it and that it would be easy to write a review. Now, I'm not so sure about that. I don't quite know how much I want to reveal about Big Machine, because the twists and turns of the story are really unusual.
I can tell you about the protagonist, Ricky Rice. Now a middle-aged man who works in a train station, as a boy Ricky was the sole survivor of a suicide cult. But the event that opens the novel is the receipt of a note:

Up and down the video lists of YouTube’s top creators, hyperlinked annotations are ubiquitous. But in their three years as a supported feature on the platform, few have actually built their entire channels around them. The few that have honed this craft of viewer-guided storytelling have learned that it’s one way to keep viewers engaged in their work—rather than serving weekly snackables to their fans, creators like Chad Matt & Rob are serving bi-monthly feasts. Their latest interactive, The Treasure Hunt which came to be after teaming up with TV prodCo Fremantle, first screened for audiences at the Anaheim International Film Festival back in August.
