Have you ever wanted to trade places with someone else, even just for an hour? Well, the old adage “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes” has spurred an entire comedy movie sub-genre: the sometimes hilarious, plenty times not, body swap trope that sits right up there with buddy movies and road trip plots for recognizable narrative arcs.
The concept has been explored with plenty of non-comedy body swaps; it’s a staple in the horror genre thanks to possessions (“Invasion of the Body Snatchers”), Satanic rituals (“The Skeleton Key”), sacrifices gone wrong (“Jennifer’s Body”), and plain ol’ demons (“The Exorcist”). Then, there’s the surgical body swap that lacks the certain je n’ai sais quoi of mystical intervention that comedies such as the live-action “Scooby Doo” movie and “All of Me” offer.
And doe time travel count as body swapping? As much as we love “13 Going on 30,” “Big,...

This weekend, Rob Savage (Host) brings his adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman to theaters. But for those of us who were of horror-watching age eighteen years ago (that hurts to say out loud), there was 2005’s Boogeyman… a horror film that launched an entire trilogy.
That first movie was successful enough to spawn both Boogeyman 2 and Boogeyman 3, though both sequels went straight to video here in the States. So, in honor of the upcoming The Boogeyman, let us take a look back at the Boogeymen of old. Even if they are completely and utterly unrelated in every way possible… and we cannot stress that enough.
Boogeyman (2005)
Directed by Stephen Kay, Boogeyman came to us at an interesting time for the horror genre. “Torture porn” was in full swing with Wolf Creek, Saw and Hostel all releasing. PG-13 horror competition included The Grudge, The Skeleton Key and The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Twenty-seven years ago, Drew Barrymore’s movie night was ruined when she picked up a phone call that should have gone unanswered. The resulting carnage remains one of the most chilling moments in slasher cinema. Thus began Scream, a horror movie that changed the face of the genre and which nearly three decades later is still going strong. In fact, Ghostface—the mysterious and chatty Halloween costume worn by various killers—ranks these days among the movie monsters he once idolized. Freddy, Jason, even Michael Myers have had to make room for a character whose series is arguably just as popular now as it was in 1996.
Through it all, the Scream movies have found surprisingly consistent ways of keeping the formula fresh while maintaining the core concept: a group of young people who consider themselves media savvy find themselves trapped in a retro scary movie that also doubles as a particularly gory whodunit.

Netflix is on the cusp of taking down a wide selection of movies and TV series.
The streaming service removes numerous titles each month, but without fanfare; unless you happen to select the thing that’s about to leave, you will have no idea there’s a limited amount of time left to watch.
Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of every movie and TV show being removed from Netflix in April 2023.
We’ve aggregated all the impending removals from Netflix in the UK and US, which we’ve signalled below. If there isn’t a territory listed next to the title, then it will be leaving both.

"The Skeleton Key" is a strange movie. For about 90 minutes, it's a routine supernatural thriller with all the usual mysteries and scares, something that seems instantly forgettable. Then it unloads a nasty little twist that suddenly throws everything that went before into a ghoulish light, making you re-evaluate all the clues threaded through the story.
The film has its fans, but I still can't quite decide whether it is a clever ploy from screenwriter Ehren Kruger ("Scream 3," "The Ring") and Iain Softley or just bad filmmaking. After all, what is the point of constructing a puzzle box of a film if it only becomes interesting after the credits roll?
For the bulk of its running time, "The Skeleton Key" is a glossy slice of Southern Gothic that feels at once oddly timeless and deeply derivative. It got lost in the mix at the time of release among the emerging...

On a balmy autumn morning in September 1999, Kate Hudson felt different. She tried to put it into words in her diary. She’s always “journaled”, once telling an interviewer that it keeps her “centred”, which is a very Kate Hudson thing to say. She was in the middle of shooting Almost Famous – the shaggy coming-of-age story that ignited her career and earned her an Oscar nomination – and had woken up after a night of filming on a cramped tour bus. “I walked outside the hotel and said hello to the light coming up over the hill,” she wrote. “I feel extremely emotional today. My heart is constantly aching. I don’t know why. It’s not that I’m missing anything; it’s that I’m feeling everything, and my heart’s accepting it.”

NBCUniversal’s international flight plan for Peacock starts this week: Starting Nov. 16, Sky TV and Now customers in the U.K. and Ireland will get access to the streaming service for no additional fee.
Comcast had announced plans this summer to launch Peacock as a free add-on for Sky’s satellite TV customers in Europe, representing a base of close to 20 million households. According to NBCU, after the “soft launch” in the U.K. and Ireland, Peacock will continue to roll out across Sky platforms in territories including Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland in the next few months.
Sky TV customers and subscribers to the Now Entertainment package in the U.K. and Ireland will get “early access” to the new ad-supported Peacock destination, with original and library TV shows and movies from across NBCU although the content availability will differ from what’s available on Peacock in the U.

Running for more than three hours, overflowing with film clips, and populated by truly insightful experts, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror is a cinematic graduate-level course––in the best sense. Written, produced, and directed with stylistic verve by Kier-La Janisse, the documentary is a staggeringly immersive experience, all somber music, eerie singing, and unsettling, often gruesome imagery. It is also a creation that inspires the viewer to dive even further into the world of “folk horror.” Tracking down and watching the films highlighted here would be difficult, if not impossible, but that search is part of the fun. Make no mistake: folk horror is fun.
As Woodlands begins, Janisse’s stellar experts explain, in voiceover, what it means to be considered “folk horror.” This array of words forms a strange and enticing tapestry, from “The juxtaposition of the prosaic and the uncanny” to “The Devil...

“After lots of collaboration and conversations with Joy and Samantha, we realized that we have the same vision to tell unique stories that are also uplifting. We are so incredibly thrilled that they made Sony their home, said Lauren Stein, EVP of Development for Spt. “And as a bonus, their actual hot sauce they make, is amazing!”
Bryant stars opposite Nicholas Pinnock and Indira Varma in For Life, which is currently airing its second season.

A man is kept captive by a sinister elderly couple in a slick piece of schlock that recalls far better and scarier movies
In Halloween hoodoo horror Spell, protagonist Marquis is trying to escape a past of violence and poverty, a dogged struggle mirroring that of the film’s makers simultaneously trying to escape comparisons to past thrillers Skeleton Key and Misery, both sides as doomed as the other. There’s a cinematic slickness to the film (it was intended to be released theatrically until the pandemic) that separates it from its more noticeably shoddier fright night competitors but it’s mostly a familiar, if not entirely fruitless, trudge down a well-trodden path, one that takes us into, at times, questionable territory.

Mark Lanegan composed his upcoming album, Straight Songs of Sorrow, as a companion piece to his gritty memoir, Sing Backwards and Weep, which chronicles his drug use and time in Screaming Trees in the Eighties and Nineties.
Wednesday, he dropped “Stockholm City Blues,” which finds him looking back regretfully on a visit to Sweden’s capital, feeling junk sick late at night. “I pay for this pain I’m running through my blood,” he sings somberly over loosely plucked acoustic guitar and cinematic strings. “You couldn’t ever tell me when enough’s enough.

Alt-rock stalwart Mark Lanegan unveiled a chilling new song, “Bleed All Over,” from his upcoming album, Straight Songs of Sorrow, set to arrive May 8th.
The track boasts an icy post-punk edge thanks to the tight skip of the drums, the queasy synth trails during the verse and rubbery plunks during the hook. Anchoring the song with some semblance of warmth, though, is the constant strum of an acoustic guitar and Lanegan’s resonant vocals as he pleads, “Baby, baby, baby don’t you say it’s over/Now that...

Happy October, readers! Over the last few years, I’ve put together various lists of horror movies from a variety of streaming platforms, but for 2018, I thought it might be fun to do some themed lists of what’s available on all the different streaming services, in case you happened to be in a mood for a particular kind of film. Because let’s be honest, we’ve all fallen down the rabbit hole of endlessly searching for something to watch after we’ve scrolled through hundreds of available titles on Netflix, Vudu, Tubi TV, Shudder, and the like.
So, for this first installment of our special “From Streams to Screams” column series this month, I’ve put together a rundown of 25 different supernatural-themed movies that should undoubtedly get you into the Halloween spirit (see what I did there?). And be sure to check back right here on Daily Dead...

Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that several of its original series will be debuting new episodes on the streaming service in August, including the third season of “The Man In The High Castle” and the first of Emmy winner Matthew Weiner‘s anthology “The Romanoffs.”
Likewise, there will be plenty of movies making their first appearances on Amazon Prime Video including those featuring Oscar-winning turns by Robert De Niro (“Raging Bull”) and Halle Berry (“Monster’s Ball”).
Unlike Netflix, Amazon does not disclose the shows and movies leaving the service in any given month. We’ve done some digging and unearthed a few titles that will be exiting Amazon Prime Video in the first week of October. News of these is detailed at the bottom of this post.

There isn’t much in Stephen King’s oeuvre that hasn’t been adapted for either television or film, but his fantasy epic, The Talisman, is one piece yet to receive the visual treatment. Not for lack of trying, mind you.
Written alongside Peter Straub, the 921-page novel has been in Steven Spielberg’s ownership since the 1980s and the three-time Academy Award winner has attempted, on multiple occasions, to adapt it. Most notable was a six-hour-long miniseries written by The Skeleton Key screenwriter Ehren Kruger, which was deemed “too rich for TNT’s blood.”
In a recent sit-down with EW, Spielberg discussed how he came to be in possession of the King novel and revealed that, after thirty five years, he still wants to see The Talisman grace the big screen.
“I feel that in the very near future, that’s going to be our richest collaboration. Universal bought the book for me,...

Couch Tomato's latest movie comparison video offers us 24 reasons why The Skeleton Key and Get Out are the same movie. It's always weird when he compares a completely awful movie with a great movie because you don't want the two films to be the same! In this case, I didn't like The Skeleton Key but I loved Get Out. But then you watch the videos and it makes sense. It's hard to argue with him, these two movies are pretty much the same!

As I set out looking for sponsors for our Broken Moon Monster Makeup Challenge, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to speak with Academy Award winner and long-time monster kid Matthew M. Mungle! For those
who don’t know, Matthew is a highly regarded member of the movie makeup effects world, whose credits include Edward Scissorhands (1990), Bram Stroker’s Dracula (1992)—which earned him his Academy Award— Schindler’S List, Bedazzled, The Skeleton Key, Red Dragon, Anchorman, The X-Files, Inception, and more, not to mention his numerous TV and Broadway credits. Matthew is still very active in film while continuing to work on shows like C.S.I., NCIS, and Wgn’s new series Salem. Matthew was extremely generous in his donation of prizes for our contest, and was even gracious enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for me!

Which is the scariest Scream of them all? We’ve put the satirical, postmodern slasher series in order…
This feature contains spoilers for all of the Scream movies.
Do you like scary movies? Director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson decided most people probably did. In the mid 90s, they breathed life into a flagging genre by creating a new knife-wielding icon who, crucially, was aware of all the horror movie villains who’d gone before.
In fact, ‘Ghostface’ was so into his horror trivia that he quizzed his victims about it before striking. Could watching enough horror movies save you when your own life threatened to turn into one? According to Scream, maybe it could.
Although the first movie ends with – spoiler! – the death of both the killers behind the mask, the Ghostface persona proved harder to kill. In the tradition of so many other slasher villains, Ghostface came back for more.

Hollywood has no shortage of talented composers crafting mostly serviceable tunes for the next young adult literary adaptation or prestige awards tearjerker. But for every auteur like Hans Zimmer and John Williams, you have musical yes men pounding out ominous notes in anticipation of the next horror movie jump scare or making ratatat noise to underscore a superhero chase scene. The film world screams for diverse sounds, but is often left wanting when scores become interchangeable to feed the Hollywood machine. The current film decade is no different from any other in terms of talent, mediocrity, and ingenuity, but could always use a boost from professionals who bring specificity to the table. These five forgotten or diminished artists, each among them with varied yet singular skills, are screaming to be brought back into the Hollywood fold to create their signature sounds.

Summer movie season is a magic time of year when Hollywood traditionally rolls out its most appealing merchandise. It’s true that some summer movie seasons are better than others. This is our ranking of all the summer movie seasons since 1980 from worst to best.
On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). But when they return to the tranquil French villa where they spent so many happy summers in their youth, tragedy strikes. A fire engulfs the building,...
