Bryan Fuller and A24 have severed ties over the “Friday the 13th” Peacock prequel series.
The show was announced in 2022 at Peacock with the title “Crystal Lake,” and while details were kept under wraps, the series was confirmed to be a prequel to the original 1980 slasher film that followed the Voorhees mother-son duo as teenagers were murdered at an abandoned summer camp.
The series will go on, IndieWire has confirmed. A24 will remain the studio and Peacock the platform — they’re currently searching for a new showunner. Production on the series had yet to start.
“Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with. These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people to take the leap with me,” Fuller captioned on Instagram. “For reasons beyond our control, A...

The “Friday the 13th” prequel series in the works at Peacock from A24 is in search of a new showrunner.
Bryan Fuller — who was announced as the show’s writer, executive producer, and showrunner when it was first ordered to series in 2022 — took to Twitter to announce that he has been fired from the show due to creative differences.
“For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” he said. “We hope the final product will be something ‘Friday the 13th’ fans all over the world will enjoy.”
Trouble on the series was first reported earlier in the week by the InSneider newsletter. However, according to an individual with knowledge of the project, the series order remains in place with hopes to line up a new showrunner as soon as possible. Production had not begun on the series, nor had any casting taken place.

Showtime Cable Channel Is Now Officially Paramount+ With Showtime, But What Does That Actually Mean?
There is some level of content reciprocity between the two versions of Paramount+ With Showtime, but the whole thing is just confusing.
Nearly one year ago, when Paramount Global announced that it would be rebranding its iconic premium cable network Showtime as “Paramount+ With Showtime,” it drew a lot of confusion from customers and people in and around the industry. The first step in this transformation came when the company renamed the premium, ad-free tier on its flagship streaming service Paramount+ with the Paramount+ With Showtime moniker back in June 2023. As of Monday, Jan. 8, Paramount has now officially made the move on the cable side as well, making things even more confusing than they already were.
As of Monday, both the ad-free streaming tier and premium cable channel are known as Paramount+ With Showtime. Streaming subscribers have access to the linear channels, but linear subscribers will not automatically have access to the streaming service.

The Streamable has compiled a list of the top 25 pilots in TV history, and where you can watch them now.
The breadth of TV content available these days is truly staggering. Whether on live channels or on-demand, on linear TV or via subscription streaming services, there has never been a wider availability of TV shows, and that can create some real uncertainty about where to start!
When picking a new TV series, it’s obviously best to start with the pilot. That’s a TV industry term for the first episode of a series, and every show that’s ever been made (along with thousands that ultimately weren’t sent to production) has had one.
Choosing the best titles amongst these is difficult, particularly since “best” is a subjective term dependent on the individual user to interpret. However, the following list has been pulled from an Ask Reddit thread which...

“Queer for Fear” executive producer Bryan Fuller has been sued for alleged sexual harassment and sexual assault on the set of the 2021 Shudder docuseries. An attorney for the “Hannibal” creator said he intends to countersue for defamation and malicious prosecution.
Sam Wineman, a producer on the series about the history of LGBTQ characters and actors in horror movies, claimed that from 2020 to 2022, Fuller “cultivated and maintained a hostile work environment” that included “harassment, discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault and retaliation.”
In Wineman’s suit, which filed last week in Los Angeles Superior Court, he alleged that “Mr. Fuller sexually assaulted plaintiff several times” throughout the production of the series. The concept of death can be confusing at any age. Even adults have a hard time processing this unavoidable part of life. For young people, though, death should be the last thing on their minds. And for a long time, the two main characters of Crazy Fun Park didn’t have to consider their mortality. Best friends Chester and Mapplethorpe were more concerned with finishing their graphic novel and making it to school on time each morning than the possibility of never seeing each other again. Yet in this Australian teen-drama series, death catches these boys completely off guard and puts their friendship to the test.
Death is typically the conclusion of relationships in other stories, but here it’s just the beginning for these two soulmates. Chester and Mapplethorpe (neatly played by Henry Strand and Stacy Clausen) are the embodiment of the word “inseparable.” Drawing from real life, series...

Bob Odenkirk played the character of Saul Goodman for 13 years, first appearing in the second season of "Breaking Bad" to guide Walter White into the depths of the criminal underworld. Future appearances marked him as a key player within the show's supporting cast, able to function as a comic archetype as well as a moral barometer for just how far White had fallen in his quest for power. Two years after "Breaking Bad" ended, Odenkirk returned to lead "Better Call Saul," a spin-off that arguably surpassed its parent series by the final episodes. Odenkirk received five Golden Globe nominations, five Emmy nominations for "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series," and another six Emmy nominations for "Outstanding Drama Series" in his capacity as a producer for "Better Call Saul." Taken separately, Odenkirk's performances in "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" are impressive. Together, they represent a process of long-form character...

From 20th Century Studios, Riele Downs stars in the supernatural comedy Darby and the Dead, and the official trailer has arrived ahead of the film’s Hulu premiere on December 2.
Some people never truly leave you…alone. After suffering a near-death experience as a young girl, Darby Harper (Downs) gains the ability to see dead people. As a result, she becomes introverted and shut off from her high school peers and prefers to spend time counseling lonely spirits who have unfinished business on earth.
But all that changes when Capri (Auli’i Cravalho), the Queen Bee of the school’s most exclusive clique, unexpectedly dies in a freak hair straightening accident, resulting in the obvious cancellation of her upcoming “Sweet 17.” Capri, however, pleads with Darby from the other side to intervene and convince Capri’s friends to proceed with the party as planned.

Christina Applegate will be receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next week, and to mark the occasion she sat down with Variety for an extensive interview covering the past, present and uncertain future of her acting career in the wake of her multiple sclerosis diagnosis last year.
In addition, next week will also see the debut of the third and final season of Netflix comedy “Dead to Me”, a role that she describes as “a gift.”
Playing Jen Harding in the series, she admitted, could be the end of the line for her. That role, she mused, is “quite possibly the last one I’ll play. With my disease, I don’t know how capable I am.”

Bryan Fuller's style is difficult to replicate. Full of detail, sometimes muted by shadows or vibrant with gore, it's easy to recognize his signature on earlier creations such as "Pushing Daisies" and "Dead Like Me." "Hannibal" has resonated the strongest with his fans, though. Hannifans are a testament to the power of fandom, keeping this three-season series alive — with the hope of a continuation — via new art, fanfiction, and recreating Hannibal's cuisine with the help of the series' food consultant Janice Poon ... without Lecter's most unique, uh, ingredients.
Sumptuous and elegant (are we talking about the show or Mads Mikkelson as Dr. Hannibal Lecter?), Fuller's creation believes in the intelligence of its viewers, never holding back the details of a damaged mind. Lecter's psychology is the most intriguing, often kept locked tight, but Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) is the key to unraveling pieces of him. That requires an...

Bryan Fuller is heading to camp. The “Hannibal” and “Pushing Daisies” creator will showrun a new series in the “Friday the 13th” franchise, Peacock announced Monday.
Titled “Crystal Lake,” the plot details of the series are being kept under wraps. However, it will serve as a prequel to the original 1980 slasher film, which was directed by Sean S. A24 serves as the studio behind the series, while Fuller executive produces with Marc Toberoff, Rob Barsamian, and original film screenwriter Victor Miller.

Happy campers? More like dying campers.
Just in time for Halloween, Peacock has announced that it has gone straight to series on Crystal Lake, a prequel drama based on the hit horror movie franchise, Friday the 13th.
Bryan Fuller, the prolific television creator behind such shows as American Gods and Star Trek: Discovery, will write, showrun and executive produce the series, which will be produced by A24, the studio known for buzzy movies such as Everything Everywhere All at Once and this year’s horror one-two punch, X and Pearl.
Friday the 13th is the horror franchise that launched in 1980 and gave the world Jason Voorhees, the hockey-masked slasher who mostly kills in and around the verdant and idyllic grounds of Camp Crystal Lake (except for the rare jaunt to New York or outer space).

The movies birthed a TV series once before,...

Showtime has ordered a comedy pilot starring real-life husband and wife Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody.
The show is inspired by the couple’s real life and relationship. It follows the delightfully tumultuous relationship and life of a successful, gregarious, deeply committed, slightly insane married couple played by Patinkin and Grody.
“Seasoned” hails from co-creators Ewen Wright and Gideon Grody-Patinkin, the couple’s son. Both serve as executive producers along with Tony Hernandez, Brooke Posch, Isabel Richardson, Patinkin, and Grody. The pilot will be directed by Wright and produced by Jake Fuller. Jax Media is producing the project for Showtime. The pilot will go into production in July in New York City.
“Mandy and Kathryn helped me and millions of online viewers get through the pandemic with their wonderfully warm, funny and inspired social media posts,” said Gary Levine, co-president of entertainment at Showtime. “Together they fearlessly show us the...

Exclusive: AMC Studios has opened a writers’ room for Moonhaven, an AI drama from writer-producer Peter Ocko. The project is being developed as part of AMC’s scripts-to-series model, which includes the commissioning of a writers’ room to develop additional material and produce backup scripts for projects the network brass are high on. In success, the projects move from the writers room straight to a series order. Ocko, who is under an overall deal with AMC Studios, would serve as showrunner if Moonhaven moves ahead as a series. Veteran producer Deb Spera has joined him as a non-writing executive producer on the project.

Like many aspiring screenwriters in the 1990s, Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller eventually became aware of Star Trek’s remarkable open submission policy and pursued an opportunity to write for the popular franchise, but after seeing the way things played out in the writer’s rooms on both of Trek’s beloved series at the time, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, things didn’t go quite the way he’d hoped.
“I got wind of the open submission policy at Star Trek, which was to encourage writers to bring in ideas because it was syndicated and nothing had to connect, so there were a lot of standalone episodes and they were searching for people outside of their writing departments,” he told Post Mortem with Mick Garris.
Fuller had already attended a couple of Star Trek conventions as a fan, but during one particular con he was able to take a class...

Witches and warlocks everywhere got some bad news this week as Netflix announced that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will end after its upcoming fourth season. As a spinoff of The CW’s popular teen drama Riverdale, Sabrina has been a big success for the streaming giant, receiving critical applause and a lot of love from fans. As such, many are wondering why it’s being cancelled just two years after it debuted in 2018.
No official reason has been given as yet for why Sabrina is ending so soon, but ScreenRant has suggested that it might be less to do specifically with the show itself and more part of an ongoing Netflix trend. As you may’ve noticed, the company tends to curtail its original TV series at around two or three seasons. For example, all those Marvel shows they axed the other year and Dead Like Me, which was just...

You’ll know Linda Cardellini from any of her hit projects over the past three decades, from 90s classic Freaks and Geeks to the Scooby-Doo movies to Netflix’s Dead Like Me. It’s easy to forget that she’s also part of the McU, however. The actress first turned up as Laura Barton, wife of Hawkeye, in Avengers: Age of Ultron. She then returned for the opening and final scenes of Avengers: Endgame. And if Cardellini had her way, she’d return a third time. But on a much bigger scale.

Now that The Flash has wrapped up for another year, the entirety of season 6 is available to watch on Netflix. The CW’s partnership with the streaming service has typically been beneficial to its shows, as they’ve been able to get a second wind from the influx of new fans who flock to them once they’re made available online. The Scarlet Speedster’s sixth season is no different, as it’s gone straight onto the Netflix top 10.
The Flash season 6 debuted on the site just yesterday and immediately found itself in the top 10 most-watched titles of the day. At present, it’s currently sitting at #6, believe it not, but it will likely hitch up to a higher place on the ladder over the next few days, as more subscribers discover the latest adventures of Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen and his friends at S.T.A.R. Netflix's Dead to Me explores the power of friendship and forgiveness in a show about grief that cuts deep, but delivers a mixed bag.
“You are crazy, but who isn’t?”
Many television series, especially dark comedies, have made death and the subject of grief a central focus. Shows like Dead Like Me and Six Feet Under were prime examples at start of the 2000s, but lately the taboo topic has new life, whether it’s more thoughtful, esoteric takes on death, like in Forever, After Life, and The Good Place, or quirkier approaches like recently canceled The Santa Clarita Diet or Russian Doll.
Netflix’s new series Dead to Me falls comfortably in between those two camps. During a time in TV when a show like this has to work especially hard to stand out, Dead to Me still makes a strong impression as it tells a raw story about forgiveness,...

Jake Gyllenhaal will star in and executive produce a limited series based on the Gary Shteyngart novel “Lake Success” that is currently in development at HBO, Variety has learned.
Should the project go to series, it would mark Gyllenhaal’s first leading role in a television series. He will executive produce along with Riva Marker through their Nine Stories production banner along with Endeavor Content. Shteyngart will serve as co-writer and co-showrunner on the series along with Tom Spezialy.
In the series, narcissistic, self-deluded and hilariously divorced from the real world hedge fund manager Barry Cohen (Gyllenhaal) flees his family, his past, and the SEC on a cross-country bus ride in search of his college girlfriend and a last chance at romantic redemption. Meanwhile, back in Manhattan, his brilliant wife Seema struggles to raise their autistic son and begins a tragicomic love affair of her own.

Canadian kid Eric McCormack kept his youthful acting dreams local because he was too ignorant and afraid to figure out how to get to Los Angeles or New York, where he could go for bigger roles. The theater-trained thespian began his career with Canada’s Stratford Festival and traveled to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, paying his dues after the festival closed at the end of each year. It wasn’t until the early 1990s that he moved further west, to Vancouver, to begin his television career in earnest. It all paid off, and McCormack now stars in two series — the “Will & Grace” revival on NBC and “Travelers” on Netflix — and will receive his star Sept. 13 on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“I was doing plays in first grade, so for me, it was always that or nothing. I had no fallback position,” McCormack admits.

Star Trek: Discovery, the first Star Trek series since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005, finally arrives this September on CBS before boldly going where no Trek series has gone before, CBS All Access. The series is also the first since J.J. Abrams introduced the alternate "Kelvin" timeline in his films, though Discovery will be set in the original, "prime" timeline, taking place ten years before the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The show will explore the Federation-Klingon cold war in a more serialized format than previous seasons. That is how Discovery stands now, as envisioned by showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts. But, under original showrunner and creator Bryan Fuller, Discovery was almost something very different; something much more original and ambitious.
Entertainment Weekly's cover story this week is Star Trek: Discovery, where the magazine reveals some previously unreleased information about what Fuller's vision for Discovery entailed.

A magnetic and Tony Award-winning star of Broadway, it only made sense that Kristin Chenoweth would bring her charm to TV. After a false start with the 2001 NBC sitcom Kristin, which was canceled after six episodes, the 4-foot-11 actress, who currently plays Easter on Starz’s hit adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, eventually found her stride on The West Wing, on which she played Annabeth Schott during the NBC drama’s final two seasons.
But Chenoweth’s TV career really started with Pushing Daisies, from American Gods executive producer Bryan Fuller. “He changed my path,” she says of Fuller, who was known at the time for creating Dead Like Me and serving as executive producer on Heroes. Soon after she quoted Hannibal Lecter in a phone conversation with the producer, Chenoweth -- a self-proclaimed sci-fi and horror geek -- and Fuller formed a bond that led to one of the best roles of her career...

I must admit that considering the release of "American Gods" is just around the corner, I'm just not that excited about the project. I'm having a hard time putting my finger on exactly why that is but I have a feeling it may have something to do with the fact that I'm still not really sure what the show is about beyond the plot that has a guy named Shadow taking the job of bodyguard to a guy named Wednesday.

Bryan Fuller will be involved even less with “Star Trek: Discovery” than previously expected.
Several weeks ago, CBS announced that Fuller was stepping down as showrunner on the upcoming “Star Trek: Discovery” series due to a scheduling conflict with “American Gods,” the other high-concept show he’s working on.

At the time, it was unclear how involved Fuller would remain with the new “Star Trek,” which had been pushed to spring due to delays in getting the show off the ground. But now comes word, via a new interview with Newsweek, that Fuller has completely divorced himself from the show.
“Ultimately, with my responsibilities [elsewhere], I could not do what CBS needed to have done in the time they needed it done for ‘Star Trek,...

When it was announced that Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" was getting a TV adaptation, the internet went nuts. Fantasy fans were excited at the prospect of a smart new show, Gaiman fans were excited at the prospect of seeing one of the author's best works being adapted and me... well, I was excited that the project was being produced by Bryan Fuller (of "Hannibal," "Dead Like Me," "Wonderfalls" and "Dead Like Me" fame) and Michael Green (of the short lived but amazing "Kings," "Heroes" and "Everwood").

Labyrinth, starring late rock icon Davie Bowie as the Goblin King, opened in theaters 30 years ago today. Though Labyrinth — a dark, wonderfully weird, glam rock semi-musical populated mostly by puppets — was never going to be a movie that won over a wide audience, it’s still wild to think about how poorly it did upon release given the film now has a secure place in pop culture history and in Bowie’s legacy. It opened at no. 8 at the U.S. box office and earned less than $13 million, barely over half of its reported budget. It was the final film directed by Jim Henson, and in the aftermath of Labyrinth’s poor reception, son Brian said of his father, “that was the closest I've seen him to turning in on himself and getting quite depressed.” Though Henson never got to witness the full fandom that would amass around the movie,...

The key to every long-running television show in the history of the medium is, above all else, consistency. Why is Days of Our Lives still on the air? Because although it delivers ridiculous, trashy, mostly meaningless storylines (there’s no such thing as real death in soap operas, only the opportunity for a “shocking” resurrection later on), it delivers it with consistency.
So while shows like Community and Dead Like Me had to scrape and claw for every season (and often every episode) to be put on the air because of their unusual storytelling sensibilities, a show like The Big Bang Theory is bound to run on an endless network broadcast for all of eternity because it found an easy formula to replicate, and is more than happy to deliver the same familiar product over and over.
The easiest formula to ensure a long and prosperous run? Insert boobs.
