“When Harry Met Sally,” “13 Going on 30,” “Past Lives” and even “Spider-Man” have all included the complicated friends-to-lovers trope. Now, “Bridgerton” could be added to list as the latest season sees romance blossom between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) as they finally make it out of the friend zone.

Back in 2017, Robinne Lee dropped by a local L.A. news station for an interview promoting her role in “Fifty Shades Darker,” the second film in the steamy series based on books by E.L. James.
“You’re venturing out a little bit now with a new novel…” the Kcal anchor said to Lee, whose filmography already included “Deliver Us From Eva,” “Hitch” and “13 Going on 30,” teeing the actor up to mention her career pivot. “I have a novel coming out this spring called ‘The Idea of You,’” Lee replied, grinning.
The premise was unique: A divorced mother and art gallery owner, living in L.A. on the precipice of turning 40, takes her daughter to a concert meet-and-greet and the 20-year-old lead singer of the band falls in love with her. The story, Lee explained, was “as much about a love story complicated by celebrity and the underbelly of...

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. Twenty years ago this month, the fairy tale-like romantic comedy “13 Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner made its way into cinemas. The actress played Jenna Rink, a socially awkward soon-to-be 13-year-old who quickly realizes that she “hates being 13.” She makes a birthday wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving.” With the little help of some wishing dust, she wakes up the next morning to discover that her wish has come true.
It was a defining moment in Garner’s early career. Her role as Sydney Bristow in the television action thriller series “Alias” had made her a breakout star (including at awards shows) just a few years earlier. She won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in 2002 and had competed again in 2003 and earlier in 2004. She had also been nominated for two Emmy Awards one Screen Actors Guild trophy.

Twenty years after its release, the Jennifer Garner-led comedy 13 Going on 30 is still thriving.
Sony released Gary Winick’s comedy in theaters April 23, 2004, and the film earned $96 million ($159 million today) at the global box office. Also featuring Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer and Andy Serkis, the movie centered on teenage Jenna Rink (played by Christa B. Allen, now known as Christa Belle), who gets embarrassed at a party and makes a wish that transforms her into her 30-year-old self (Garner).
Co-writers Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, in addition to Belle, separately share with The Hollywood Reporter about other actresses being considered for Garner’s part, Ruffalo feeling hesitant to do the “Thriller” dance, memories of Winick (who died of cancer in 2011 at age 49), the status of a stage musical, and persistent chatter among the film’s team regarding a potential onscreen reboot.

The Christina Applegate-led dark comedy from the 90s gets a shrewdly made update that acts as a blueprint for how Hollywood should revisit older material
Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is the ultimate ode to the latchkey generation. To watch the 1991 film now is to be reminded of a simpler time when parents barely checked in, house parties were all the rage and Christina Applegate was the ideal girl nextdoor. Given its place in the grand tradition of coming-of-age classics, somewhere between Tom Hanks’s Big and Jennifer Garner’s 13 Going on 30, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood mulled a remake of Applegate’s celluloid breakout. Any update would have to relate to a new generation that, in many ways, has had to grow up even faster than their predecessors.

Netflix says its ad-supported plan includes “the vast majority” of TV shows and movies available on the standard no-ads tiers — but more than a year after the streamer introduced the cheaper option, several popular titles remain unavailable to customers with the ad plan.
Most recently, Netflix customers noticed that Eli Roth’s horror film “Thanksgiving” (pictured above), added Feb. 17 for subscribers on ad-free tiers, is unavailable on the ad plan. The service notes that the slasher pic — currently at the No. 3 spot on Netflix’s top 10 movies in the U.S. — is not available to members on the ad plan because of licensing restrictions.
“While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions,” the streamer says in an article on its help site. “These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.

“I have got to be here to honor and elucidate rom-com Ruffalo,” she said (via YouTube).
“How lucky are we to have been in a movie that kids are dressing up for as Halloween? It still means something to people,” she added of the 2004 movie.

Do you remember the show "Raising Dad"? The 2001-2002 single-season series from The WB grabbed my attention because it was another show starring "Full House" star Bob Saget, but would also serve as the gateway to two actors who would become all-time favorites of mine: Kat Dennings and Brie Larson. When it was announced that the latter was going to appear in "Fast X," I couldn't resist bringing up her history of playing a hot rodder in the Disney Channel Original Movie "Right on Track," and I'm always elated when people realize that Larson is one of the members of the Six Chicks clique in "13 Going on 30" and one of the popular girls in "Sleepover."
When actors can transition into a successful acting career as adults, their childhood careers either become the comparison of everything they do moving forward, or a non-discussed subject. For Larson, her past as...

American sweetheart Jennifer Garner was one of Hollywood’s top actresses of the 2000s. Her on-screen presence and poise easily helped contribute to her likeability as a person and an actor. Jennifer Garner is known for her performance in 13 Going on 30 (2004) and for portraying the Marvel Comics superhero Elektra in the comics’ film adaptations. Although she has had successes as a film actress, most of her major award nominations and wins have been for her work on the small screen. Interestingly, although Garner began her acting career in theater, television was where she made her on-screen debut. These...

In body-swap comedies, the acting is its own kind of brazen put-on fun. Adult actors get to channel their inner innocent kid; young actors get to channel their “serious” adult. And that’s why, ever since the original “Freaky Friday” (1976) brought this genre into being, it’s been marked by instances of true Hollywood artistry, like Tom Hanks’ classic performance in “Big” (though that wasn’t technically a swap comedy) or the lyrically funny bedlam that Jennifer Garner brought off in “13 Going on 30,” one of the best movies of its year.
But even that was 20 years ago. In the decades since, dozens — hundreds — of Hollywood comedies have wallowed in a baseline joke of American middle-class behavior, repeating it again and again like a sacred trope. Today, the movies teach us, adults already are overgrown children: creatures of impulse and appetite and development arrested by their immersion in pop culture.

Hollywood has a long tradition of brutal honesty, as Mark Ruffalo found when in negotiations for David Fincher’s Zodiac. More below…
As the Incredible Hulk himself, Mark Ruffalo is surely one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood in 2023. Combining his Marvel clout with some brilliantly restrained performances in films like Spotlight and Dark Waters, he’s a rare actor that seems able to do it all. And with a particularly, shall we say, memorable turn in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things arriving in the UK early next year, it looks like his range is only getting wider.
But that wasn’t the case back in the mid-noughties, it turns out. In a new interview with High Snobiety, Ruffalo is pretty candid with the position his career was in before David Fincher cast him in his serial killer drama, Zodiac.
“Studios, they weren’t coming to me in that way,...

The San Francisco-based Dave Toschi was a vital figure in one of the most high-profile criminal cases in U.S. history: the hunt for the Zodiac Killer. His methods and demeanor also served as inspiration for Steve McQueen’s titular Bullitt and Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry. But when it came to bringing the man himself to the big screen, who better than Mark Ruffalo? As it turned out, the studio didn’t care if Ruffalo signed on for Zodiac or not.
Speaking with highsnobiety, Mark Ruffalo said that his offer for Zodiac was a take it or leave it one, which is no surprise given the actor had more indie cred than studio push. “Studios, they weren’t coming to me in that way. I’ll never forget when they were negotiating my deal [for Zodiac], the studio negotiator literally said to my manager, “Look, we don’t give a shit about Mark Ruffalo,...

Mark Ruffalo’s name holds serious clout in Hollywood these days (no doubt helped by his ongoing role as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), but it wasn’t always like that for the 55-year-old actor. In a new interview with High Snobiety, Ruffalo recalled the casting process for David Fincher’s acclaimed 2007 crime thriller “Zodiac” and being told by studio representatives that nobody cared about him.
“Studios, they weren’t coming to me in that way,” Ruffalo said of his career in the mid-2000s. “I’ll never forget when they were negotiating my deal [for ‘Zodiac’], the studio negotiator literally said to my manager, ‘Look, we don’t give a shit about Mark Ruffalo. We don’t even want Mark Ruffalo in this movie, so you’re going to take what we’re offering you or forget it.’”

All the Light We Cannot See is a drama series created by Steven Knight, directed by Shawn Levy, and based on the novel by Anthony Doerr.
Prepare your hearts to beat to the rhythm of one of the most sentimental series you can watch on television. “All the Light We Cannot See” is a spectacular production set in the final days of World War II during the German occupation of Paris, in which a blind girl broadcasts a radio program and helps the French resistance win the war. Meanwhile, the Germans search for her, some driven by sentiment and others for different reasons.
The series showcases stunning imagery, such as the breathtaking aerial shots, and boasts solid execution and writing.
However, be warned if you’re not a fan of sentimental stories, because this series delves deeply into the realm of emotions.

Bodyswap comedies are a time-honored tradition in Hollywood. From “Freaky Friday” to “13 Going on 30” to so, so many more, the idea of a kid switching bodies with an adult is something studios can’t get enough of. But how do you up the stakes? Well, in “Family Switch,” it’s not just one kid who switches bodies with a parent. Instead, we get both kids switching with both parents.

Exclusive: Saoirse Ronan (Foe) has found her next project in Bad Apples, a biting satirical comedy with thriller elements, for which HanWay Films is launching worldwide sales at AFM. Marking the English language debut of Swedish writer-director Jonatan Etzler (One More Time), the film to be produced by Pulse Films is targeting a UK shoot — under an Equity contract — in spring 2024.
Written by Jess O’Kane, Bad Apples adapts Rasmus Lindgren’s debut novel De Oönskade. The film tells the story of Maria (Ronan), a primary school teacher doing her best to inspire a class of 10-year-olds but unable to because of one unruly and chaotic student. Furniture stores are strange places. The liminal feeling they give off is something like a life-size dollhouse or home you once lived in but can’t remember when. If you’ve ever been into an Ikea, chances are you thought about what it’d be like to spend the night in one of the staged rooms that has a sink with no running water.
A friend told me once that when she was younger, her parents would take her and her older sister to Bob’s Furniture for snacks and movies. While her parents would pretend to shop around for a pressboard dresser, she and her sister would raid the store’s self-serve cafe for popcorn, ice cream, candy, cookies and then sit down in the store’s small theater while something like “Finding Nemo” or “Shrek” played.
