In the wake of Hayao Miyazaki’s latest Oscar win for “The Boy and the Heron” and the VOD dominance of “Godzilla Minus One,” Japanese cinema continues to be as vital as ever to American audiences. That should make the upcoming edition of Japan Cuts, the annual film festival celebrating Japanese cinema co-produced by Japan Society, one of the most exciting events on New York cinephiles’ summer calendars.
The lineup, which IndieWire can exclusively reveal, contains a mix of American and New York premieres alongside a curated selection of newly restored classics. Notable titles include “Shin Godzilla: ORTHOchromatic,” a new black-and-white version of Hideaki Anno’s 2016 kaiju blockbuster; and “Shadow of Fire,” the war drama from “Tetsuo: The Iron Man” director Shinya Tsukamoto that premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.

Although many of us consider ourselves movie experts, our knowledge is often limited to U.S. and British productions, completely ignoring creators from around the world. Knowing this, Martin Scorsese, in response to a young filmmaker named Colin Levy, created a list of 39 international films that you must see.
While 39 may seem like a lot, you can always start with 10 that other people considered the best. Here is the list of the top 10 Martin Scorsese recommendations, according to IMDb rating.
10. Ugetsu monogatari (1953) – 8.2/10
Country: Japan
Set in a rural area during Japan's civil war, this movie follows Genjuro and Tobei, two men driven by the need to make money for their families. Ignoring the signs and possessed by their greed, they make enough to feed everyone but bring devastation and destruction as their punishment.
9. Umberto D. (1952) – 8.2/10
Country: Italy
Umberto D. Ferrari is a retired government clerk living in Rome and struggling to make ends meet.

After Netflix’s recent success with the live-action One Piece adaptation, the company seems to have acknowledged the potential of anime. Several Netflix original series have been released in the past few years, and the latest addition is Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf.
This no-nonsense action-packed series is very obviously targeted at fans of Baki, Spriggan, Kengan Ashura, and other original Netflix action anime. No one can deny the cult following these action anime have, and the company did not waste any time catering another series to this growing audience.
Netflix Ona Garouden: Plot, Trailer, and Other Updates
Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf anime is inspired by a Japanese martial arts novel by Baku Yumemakura. The protagonist, Juzo is a skilled martial artist and practices Takemiya-ryu. He is on the run from a dark past and is being followed by a detective.

Piracy and anime have been linked together since the beginning of this century. It is a subject that continuously indicates the want to watch shows regardless of where you reside.
It was very irritating to numerous fans that they couldn’t get access to particular anime series or read their preferred manga because distribution didn’t bring them into their nation. Fansubs eventually provided millions of fans worldwide the opportunity to explore and like manga and anime.

The publishing industry in Japan has won a big fight against online piracy. The Tokyo District Court told the person who used to run the manga piracy site Mangamura they must pay three important publishing houses – Shogakukan, Kadokawa, and Shueisha – 1.7 billion yen for damages caused by their actions.

When the Library of Congress Music Division made the extraordinary discovery of handwritten scores composed by Alex North for two of Anna Sokolow’s dances, Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble Artistic Director Samantha Géracht reimagined the dances using archival evidence and the music. “Slaughter of the Innocents” is Sokolow’s 1937 lament for Basque women suffering under Nazi aerial bombing. “Ballad in a Popular Style” is a wistful lyrical excursion into jazz, first performed in 1936. Both will be performed by members of the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble to the original music, for the first time in 80 years, showing that the creative collaboration...

Tamil actor Karthi’s upcoming action-thriller film ‘Japan’ has released its latest track ‘Sottangalla’. Sung by Sean Roldan, ‘Sottangalla’ is a very soft piece which has a feeling of emotional nostalgia, as well as a kind of romance to it.
The song is radically different from the previous song ‘Touching Touching’ from the movie which was totally sexual and laid out the character’s hedonistic lifestyle. ‘Sottangalla’ in contrast has no sexual elements and is entirely devoid of any such references.
Rather it is more of a looking back on things as the video shows the titular character’s early childhood, him growing up, and then falling in love at the very end.
The whole movie’s premise is about a man who was born into destitution and poverty, and how he rises up to become a wealthy thief who has no shortage of money.
As such, ‘Sottangalla’ perfectly complements this feeling of nostalgia.

Tamil star Karthi’s film ‘Japan’ has released its trailer and shows the actor in an eccentric, murderous, thrill-seeking, arrogant, and hedonistic new avatar as the titular character. Earlier in the teaser, the Karthi-starrer had shown the actor’s persona to be that of a thrill-seeking thief with a murderous attitude. In the trailer, it picks up on that and expands further on his new persona.
The trailer starts off in a very simple fashion in a village area by the sea, as Karthi’s character Japan narrates the story of a young fish that began digging in holes for his food such as scorpions, crocodiles, crabs. Before he knew, the fish had dug so many holes that he transformed into a whale.
This cuts to Karthi’s character raising himself up in the underworld as he soon gains a penchant for theft. Committing the biggest heist of his career ever,...

Before he knew, the fish had dug so many holes that he transformed into a whale.

Chennai, Oct 18 (Ians) Tamil superstar Karthi’s ‘Japan’ had garnered much interest after its poster was released. Donning the avatar of a highly clever, intelligent, thrill-seeking, thief, Karthi looks full of swag.
A heist-action-thriller-comedy film, ‘Japan’ sees the ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ star as the titular character. Contrary to the title, the film has nothing to do with the country Japan. Instead, Karthi is a criminal who goes by that pseudonym, and is a criminal with a very sharp mind who ends up performing a massive heist, managing to rob over Rs. 200 crore.
The Tamil Nadu police, who feel absolutely baffled by these robberies are left helpless as they reveal that Japan has committed over 182 such heists before, and each time the police have tried to catch him, they failed.
Attempting to catch him, Karthi’s character is revealed to be a gun swinging maniac who leads a hedonistic lifestyle, donning a lot of bling,...

Modern-day production in Argentina lifted off from its new Argentine Cinema, born over 1991-95, in Brazil with Walter Salles’ 1998 “Central Station,” in Mexico from Carlos Reygadas’ 2002 “Japón.”
Now, Latin America is seeing second-phase expansion based out of smaller markets, driven by the energies of forward-thinking production companies determined to not just build slates but their national film industries.
In line with the massive new talent focus of many of Locarno’s industry programs – this year’s Germany First Look with five feature debuts, the Match Me! emerging producer springboard – Open Doors will focus on Latin America’s most under-represented territories and the Caribbean, where production companies have sprung up after national cinema lift-off in more major countries in the region.
Bolivia’s Empatía Cinema, for example, was founded in 2007, but most key companies at Locarno launched significantly later: Ypr Films in 2010, La Linterna Films in 2011, Paraguay’s Asociación Cultural Arraigo...

There is no denying the appeal of “The Confidence Man Jp” to its domestic audience. A successful TV series, in addition to three films, have all been undeniable hits, leading the box office and entering homes since 2018. The first of these big-screen showings, “The Confidence Man Jp: The Movie” shows why, but also allowed room for future instalments, ones which subsequently came.
“The Confidence Man Jp: The Movie” is screening as part of the Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme
At its core, there are a group of con-artists, both ambitious and reckless, yet at the same time somewhat grounded and tactful. They are Dako (Masami Nagasawa), Boku-chan (Masahiro Higashide), Richard (Fumiyo Kohinata), Igarashi (Shinya Kote), and newcomer Monako (Lisa Oda), who team up to try and take down “Ice Princess,” a Hong-Kong based triad boss and prominent corporate figure who possesses an item the gang are desperate to get their hands on.

University is supposed to be a time where you start off naïve, but come out the other side ready for the real world. But, as is the case for many of us, Horigai (Yui Sakuma) is approaching the end of her time in higher education but is far from ready for anything. Ryohei Yoshino’s third feature “Eternally Younger Than Those Idiots”, however, is an assured piece from a director that looks to be finding the right course.

Having already arranged a child welfare role in her hometown, Horigai spends her last few months of uni handing out surveys as part of her thesis. But she’s in no hurry to get it written, and so spends her days lazing about. But with time on her hands, and an impending job that will prove difficult,...

News of the four Academy Awards nominations was reported by all major Japanese media, from the most serious Nikkei business daily to the sports tabloids whose usual coverage of local art films is zero.
The news also lit up Twitter.
“An Academy Award nomination for Best Picture is a great accomplishment. I think the melding between Haruki Murakami and Chekhov has created a universality that can be felt around the world,” said Twitter user YasioE.
“I really want it to win the Best Picture award, don’t you? Judging from the state of the awards race, I think it can win it. And as a film based on Murakami’s work, I think it should win the Adapted Screenplay award too,...

The Tokyo International Film Festival will showcase the works of director Yoshida Keisuke at next month’s 34th edition. The festival runs Oct. 30-Nov. 8, 2021.
Two films by Yoshida are getting commercial releases this year, his recent “Blue,” and “Intolerance,” which reaches Japanese theaters later this month (Sept. 23.)
The festival will give house room to “Blue,” “Intolerance” and his 2016 title “Himeanole.” Yoshida has also gained currency in recent years for titles including “Thicker Than Water” and “Come on Irene,” both from 2018.
The newly-expanded Nippon Cinema Now section replaces the previous Japan Now section and aims to bring more diverse Japanese films to world audiences by focusing on emerging and singular talents who deserve greater recognition on a global scale.
“Each film expresses his singular vision and deeply moves audiences. Yoshida’s talent for depicting the madness of human relations between a diversity of characters, including a stalker, siblings, an international couple,...

PlayStation owners will have their first chance to try Call of Duty: Vanguard during a public alpha test this weekend that’s open to PS5 and PS4 players. The alpha will focus on Champion Hill, a new multiplayer mode that’s described as “a mix of battle royale plus Gunfight with progression happening between each of the rounds.”
Champion Hill, which can be played as 2v2 or 3v3, sees teams compete in tournament-style deathmatch rounds on a map split up into five sections, including a Buy Station Area at the center where players can upgrade their loadouts, buy Perks, new weapons and equipment, and more. But you’ll need to take out your enemies to earn the cash to be these goodies. The goal of the mode is to deplete every other team’s life count to zero and becpome the last squad standing.
This is definitely an interesting experiment for Call of Duty.

This excerpt is from The Faber Book of Mexican Cinema (2021), by Jason Wood. It was conducted before the premiere of Franco's latest film, New Order (2020).As a director, screenwriter and producer, Michel Franco is a prolific figure in Mexican cinema. Daniel & Ana (2009), Franco’s debut feature as director, premiered at Cannes and established him as a film-maker with a forensic eye for detail and character. Franco is also incredibly attuned to contemporary issues in Mexican society, in this instance the rise of underground pornography. The winner of the Un Certain Regard award at Cannes, After Lucia (2012) continues the director’s interest in fractured family lives and how technology can act as a powerful and poisonous tool. A los ojos (2014), a collaboration with Franco’s sister Victoria, adopts a documentary aesthetic to explore the ends to which a parent will go to protect their child, whilst also examining how little...

After going virtual last year and not handing out any prizes due to the Covid pandemic, the 2021 Cannes Film Festival returned to form by announcing its winners on July 17. How many of these will figure in the upcoming Oscar race? We recap the results from the 74th edition of this foremost of film festivals and review its history as a forecaster of the Academy Awards.
The top award at Cannes is the Palme d’Or. Over the years, 40 winners of this prize have amassed 135 Academy Award nominations. Seventeen of these have claimed a combined 32 Oscars. This year, the Palme d’Or went to French filmmaker Julia Ducournau‘s “Titane.” Her dramatic thriller centers on a father reunited with his son who was missing for a decade during which several unexplained crimes were committed. Preparing to launch its biggest and broadest sales slate ever at Cannes, driven by 13 festival titles, The Match Factory has dropped a first trailer to Tatiana Huezo’s “Prayers for the Stolen,” lead-produced by the award-winning producer of “Roma” Nicolás Celis.
Playing at Cannes in Un Certain Regard, the new feature – glimpsed via a couple of excerpts at Los Cabos Festival in 2019 – marks the much anticipated fiction film debut of Huezo, who has risen to prominence as one of Latin America’s most respected documentary filmmakers on the back on just two doc-features, 2011’s “The Tiniest Place” and 2016’s “Tempestad,” which was selected for Berlin Forum.

As the title suggests, the documentary “Queer Japan” is big and broad, not focused. A vigorous smorgasbord of sexual orientations and gender identities, Graham Kolbeins’ feature encompasses enough varieties of L, G, B, T and Q to leave you exhausted, and does so with energy, style and open-hearted appreciation.
“Right now in Japan, we’re in the middle of an LGBT boom,” says a voice over an opening shot of Tokyo’s Rainbow parade, followed by another voice talking about the importance of becoming visible but “not generating any friction with the majority.” The film celebrates the boom, but its characters aren’t too concerned about the friction; with a couple of exceptions, they’re out and proud, with any days they might have spent in the closet well behind them.
Those opening remarks, by the way, are as close as you’ll get to an overview in “Queer Japan.

At the Moosic Lab 2018, the short film “Made in Japan” by Yusaku Matsumoto was awarded the Audience Award, the Special Jury Prize and a Best Actor Award. The ensemble of actors that Matsumoto has engaged for his fast-paced and extremely concise social satire is indeed extraordinarily impressive. The strength of the film is based on the dynamics between the characters, which in all its compactness makes a relevant and haunting impression.

On March 6, at the opening ceremony, Kamikura Tsuneyuki, Chairperson, Osaka Executive Committee for the Promotion of Moving Image Culture, gave an opening speech:
“Aiming to be Asian film’s gateway to the world, Oaff has now reached its 15th edition. Films are made to convey to contemporary society what people are thinking now, and we have strived to introduce these films to as wide an audience as possible. Oaff, however, has not been able to realize a number of our planned projects this year. To fight against an invisible enemy, and to minimize the possibility of tragedy, we decided to cancel all filmmaker-in-person events so as to reduce the chance of possible coronavirus infection. Upon asking filmmakers’ understanding, we have decided to focus on our fundamental purpose: screening films which show the many other things which are happening around us.”
On March 15 the winners of this year’s edition were announced.
