One of the world's highest-grossing and most famous film directors started out as a special effects artist for the king of B-movies, Roger Corman, known for his ability to shoot quickly and cheaply. Perhaps it was Corman's projects that made James Cameron swear off making low-budget movies, eventually becoming the first director in the world to receive budgets of $100 and $200 million.
Today, Cameron is considered to be not only one of the most important science fiction directors of our time, but also one of the most successful directors in general, whose films break unattainable box office records and are incredibly loved by audiences.
But few fans know that at the very beginning of the 2000s, Cameron created a sci-fi project for the small screens starring Jessica Alba – Dark Angel.

Nathan Fillion thought Ant-Man was a low-rung superhero before he saw Paul Rudd carrying the role easily. He was surprised when Rudd made the character almost endearing to him. Earlier it was rumored that Fillion was considered for the Ant-Man role. The rumors started after Joss Whedon directed The Avengers, as he and the director had worked together on Firefly.

Fillion debunked the rumors, sharing that there was no truth in them. Interestingly, Fillion had an affinity to play a comic book supervillain, which came true when he was cast as T.D.K. in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

10. The Mist (2017)
Based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, the idea behind this show is something the author loves to do: isolating a small town from the rest of the world, throwing in a bunch of stress for its inhabitants, and seeing what they do about it. The Mist didn’t perform too well in Season 1, but it had the right idea and potential.
You can watch The Mist on Netflix, Apple TV, and Prime Video.
9. Watchmen (2019)
What does it mean to be a hero? Watchmen tries to answer this seemingly straightforward but ultimately convoluted question with its unique premise and approach. In a world where superheroes are real and treated and outlaws and the police wear masks hiding their faces, who can break the cycle of violence?
You can watch Watchmen on Max, Hulu, Apple TV, and Prime Video.

When Paul Rudd debuted as Ant-Man, he quickly made the pint-sized hero one of the most popular characters in Marvel. His take on the character even impressed Nathan Fillion, who didn’t have the highest opinion on Ant-Man at first.
What Nathan Fillion thought of Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man Nathan Fillion | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Fillion considered himself a fan of superhero films, and starred in his own fair share of crime-fighting flicks. He was known for voicing Green Lantern on a couple of animated DC projects. He also had a role in the James Gunn original superhero movie Super.
In a resurfaced interview with the Advocate, while expressing his own desire to play superhero films, Fillion discussed his love of Marvel films. He was particularly surprised by the Marvel film Ant-Man, with Rudd playing the titular character. Fillion thought Rudd helped make a character he considered silly at first look quite endearing.

Actor Nathan Fillion has been the lead in several hit shows, with one of his most popular projects being Firefly. The show has been canceled for years, and yet Fillion is still recognized by the series to this day. However, he also starred in the hit series Castle, attracting a new legion of fans. But which one does he think brought him the most popularity?

It’s easy to see why Fillion would be recognized for Castle. The show was a hit on the network series ABC during its original run. 2002 was the year of the release of the already legendary Firefly. During its short life on television, the series managed to gain cult status, an army of loyal fans and an honorable place in the list of the best science fiction projects.
However, the love of critics and viewers could not save Firefly from a quick cancellation. The Fox network expected sky-high ratings, but its bosses interfered with the filming process and even showed episodes in a different order than the creators intended. As a result, the show was axed after its first season.
If you still haven't come to terms with Firefly's short life and have already watched its one and only season a hundred times, then you should pay attention to a series that went unnoticed by many viewers, but definitely deserves the attention of sci-fi fans – Dark Matter, released in 2015.

Actor Nathan Fillion had a brief period where he had trouble finding work before his breakthrough role. A couple of showrunners took a chance on him when he might’ve needed it the most, allowing Fillion to make a living doing what he enjoyed. Years later, Fillion would reunite with those showrunners again for a special occasion.

It can be extremely disappointing to get into a show only to have it canceled. But the more competition there is among TV networks, streaming platforms and production companies, the harder they are on shows that don't seem to bring in nearly enough viewers to be considered profitable.
Unfortunately, many great TV shows are overlooked today simply because they're cut too early. So, if you are willing to brace yourself and deal with the fact that you may never know the true finale, here are 8 amazing series that are worth every minute spent in front of the TV.
Firefly (2002-2003)
It's hard to say that the cancellation was unjustified, as Firefly premiered to very low ratings. However, it wasn't even given a chance to intrigue viewers, as the show was misadvertised and the network decided to air episodes out of order, making it difficult for viewers to get into the story.

When television science fiction works, it can change us. However, lasting long enough to make an impact is a hell of a trick. "Star Trek," the keystone franchise for multiple generations of fans and scientists, fought for its survival more than once. In the end, the original, larger than life phenomena lasted only three seasons. In a similar vein, "Babylon 5" remains a quieter but no less impactful series for modern science fiction fans, with the "Lord of the Rings" inspired space opera struggling every year since the poorly reviews first season for more time to finish its planned five year arc -- and a reboot from its original creator is still going through similar trials.
The problem is that good science fiction is always experimental, almost always more expensive than dramas or safe sitcoms, and it relies on an audience hanging in long enough for the plot to really hit its stride.

10. It (1990)
The story that gladly launched coulrophobia rates in the world off the charts, Stephen King’s It is haunting and unsettling. You definitely wouldn’t want to be a child when this demonic clown is clowning around: even if you somehow survived, you’d be mentally scarred for life. But you could always just move from the town he's in. You can watch It on Apple TV and Prime Video.
9. House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
One glance at Rob Zombie is enough to picture the kind of horror movies this man makes, and House of 1000 Corpses, his directorial debut, started off strong. Ending up in the Firefly family’s abode is a terrible, terrible idea… But at least, you’d know there’s no hope of escaping, so that’s kind of a nice bonus compared to later entries.

Normally, this would’ve been an easy scene to do for The Rookie star, as the actor was already experienced with crying on cue.

Actor Nathan Fillion got his breakthrough role in the cult classic Firefly. The series was similar to one of many shows featuring a space crew traveling to different planets, including Star Trek. But Fillion felt Firefly differed from the likes of Star Trek in a pretty grounded way.

On the surface, Star Trek and Firefly might look similar enough without any context. But beyond their premises of space crews exploring the galaxy, they couldn’t have been anymore different. Star Trek often features an altruistic space crew trying to influence the galaxy for the better. Firefly, however, was about individual characters with often vastly different views coming together and simply trying to get by.

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was a changed show in its second season. In its early days, the Marvel Television series suffered from an identity crisis. Season 1 started out trying to emulate co-creator Joss Whedon's previous work, yet it played as a pale imitation of shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and especially "Firefly," following a ragtag team of misfits on weekly adventures in their flying home base. However, the one-two combo punch of Whedon stepping away from the series and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" blowing up the Marvel Cinematic Universe's status quo near the end of season 1 proved to be just the creative boost the show needed.
Upon returning for season 2, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." had gained a newfound confidence. Its characters began to take on greater dimensions, it really embraced the idea of being a show about everyday people trying to keep the world safe, and it even started...

Perhaps in every genre there is the series that was unfairly closed at the most interesting moment. For fans of science fiction, Firefly became such a wound in the heart, and for fans of historical dramas, there is Rome, the return of which most connoisseurs of the genre dream of.
As it happens, Rome has only two seasons. But even that is enough to appreciate it.
Rome Was Game of Thrones’ Predecessor
Even before Game of Thrones, HBO and the BBC tried the "sex, blood and political intrigue" formula with Rome, which was released in 2005. And the historical period was more appropriate than ever: the Roman Empire just after the Gallic War...

Netflix has released dozens of sci-fi shows, but not all of them are worth watching. Therefore, Reddit users have collected only the best of the best – those that changed the rules of the genre and surprised with their unexpected plot twists.
1. Altered Carbon, 2018-2020
When acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis read Richard K. Morgan's cyberpunk novel Altered Carbon, she decided to turn it into a blockbuster. But the story did not fit into an hour and a half hours, so Kalogridis decided to turn the project into a television series for Netflix.
Altered Carbon is about a future world in which people can live forever, moving their consciousness from body to body and creating digital copies in case of sudden death or murder. The richer a person is, the better his immortality is guaranteed and the more often he can change bodies.
2. Dark, 2017-2020
2019, the quiet German town of Winden.

One of the most prominent TV series of the 21st century, the sci-fi drama The Oa, was canceled after its second season. And this is probably the worst decision made by Netflix since the adaptation of Winx Club.
The show, created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, is about a blind girl named Prairie who returns to her hometown after a mysterious seven-year absence. As the case unfolds, it is revealed that she has been held captive by a mad scientist who studies near-death experiences. Prairie gathers a group of people around her and initiates them into the mystery of her life, which she was able to comprehend after her clinical death.
The Oa Still Remains Netflix’s Main Hidden Gem
Unfortunately, The Oa remained a hidden gem of the Netflix collection – few people watched the series, but those who did were extremely enthusiastic. Critics called it the Twin Peaks of a new generation,...

So Help Me Todd’s cancellation news has the whole fan community raging over the unfair decision, but this time things may have gone a bit further than usual.
Apparently, over the course of its relatively short run of two seasons, the show conquered so many hearts and to such an extent that fans weren't enough with just calling CBS out on the social media.
All the fuss around the media actually makes a lot of sense. So Help Me Todd initially follows quite an original and compelling plot that revolves around goofy Todd who isn’t able to keep his life together when it starts falling apart after Todd is deprived of his investigative license.
Luckily, he’s immediately picked up by his own mother, portrayed by Oscar-winning Marcia Gay Harden, who finds him a place in her law firm. Todd’s mother has high hopes that he will...

TV shows have always been canceled, often suddenly. Being a fan of TV shows in general has always meant living in a state of constant readiness for disappointment.
The Internet is full of lists of "the TV shows canceled too early" dozens of lines long, and some stories have almost become legends, such as the cult Firefly, which the Fox network not only killed off in its infancy, but also shredded into pieces and tossed into the air in random order.

Actor Nathan Fillion has been leading the TV show The Rookie for soon to be seven seasons, now. But with Fillion playing officer John Nolan for so many years, the character hasn’t been a rookie for quite some time.
Fillion recently explained how the show lived up to its premise despite his character’s growing experience.

In the beginning, the show’s title The Rookie told audiences almost everything they needed to know about the series. Fillion played a middle-aged man who makes a sudden and severe career change when he decides to become a police officer. At 47 years-old, Fillion’s John Nolan became the oldest rookie in the LAPD at the time. Which was one of the main reasons why the Castle star was so attracted to the show.

Actor Nathan Fillion’s star power grew thanks to starring in shows like Castle and The Rookie. But before those two hit shows, he considered his sci-fi cult hit Firefly as the show that kick-started his career.

Fillion initially didn’t know he’d be able to make a living from acting. In an interview with Closer, he confided that he saw acting as more of a side gig when he went to school. But getting an actual acting job that paid decently changed Fillion’s trajectory.
“I was going to finish off schooling and four months before graduation I got a job on a soap and moved to New York City. I did three years there, moved to Los Angeles on the advice of Bob Woods, who played my uncle on the show.

Adobe’s generative artificial intelligence flagship is Firefly, a text-to-image tool that powers generative fill-in for Photoshop and text-to-vector in Illustrator. However, the 2024 Firefly model will power three AI video tools inside video editing software Premiere Pro: Generative Extend, Object Addition and Removal, and Text to Video.
Premiere already allows video editors to integrate Adobe creative cloud software like After Effects (motion graphics) and Audition (sound mixing). Today’s announcement makes clear that Adobe will take the same approach with AI. The company also announced that it is in “early explorations” to integrate video generation from OpenAI (Sora), Runway, and Pika Labs into Premiere.
Last week, Adobe demonstrated these new gen AI tools for IndieWire and shared examples (see video at the top of the page) of what will be available inside Premiere Pro before the end of the year.

A trailer made by fans for a Batgirl movie with Jenna Ortega has got more than 1.03 million views in less than five days. It’s made by Kh Studio and uses different effects, sounds, AI, and movie stuff. But it’s just for fun and doesn’t mean Ortega is really doing anything with DC. Still, people might keep talking about Ortega joining DC because of how many people watched the trailer.
We’re not sure if there are any plans for Batgirl in Gunn’s Dcu, even though the trailer shows Dceu characters.
When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as leaders of DC Studios last year, big changes were expected. Shortly after, the studio officially announced the end of the DC Extended Universe (Dceu) and introduced a new cinematic universe called Dcu, serving as a soft reboot. A fan-made trailer for a Batgirl movie starring Jenna Ortega has gained over 1.03 million views in less than five days. Created by Kh Studio, the trailer uses various effects, sound design, AI technologies, and movie analytics. However, it’s purely for entertainment and doesn’t indicate any real projects involving Ortega and DC. Despite this, rumors about Ortega’s potential casting may continue due to the trailer’s popularity.
Even though the trailer features Dceu characters, it’s unknown whether something related to Batgirl is planned in Gunn’s Dcu.
When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as CEOs of DC Studios last year, we knew nothing would be the same. Indeed, it didn’t take long for the studio to officially announce the end of the DC Extended Universe and the start of another cinematic universe, Dcu, that will replace it as a soft reboot. When 9-1-1 co-creator Tim Minear signed up on Twitter (now known as X), he chose a telling handle to denote his legacy as a screenwriter and director: @Cancelledagain. “I was sort of infamous for all of my thundering failures over the years,” explains Minear. “Firefly lasted one season, Terriers one season, The Inside one season, Drive went for six episodes. Everything was canceled, so I just called myself ‘cancelled again,’ which actually worked out for me because these are all beloved little cult shows now.”
With the seventh season of 9-1-1, which he created with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, underway and a milestone 100th episode premiering April 4, Minear now has a big, long-running show on his hands, plus a successful spinoff in 9-1-1: Lone Star, which will debut its fifth season in the fall. So much so that he’s considering a name change if he returns to the social media platform.

Rob Zombie has said that for every one film project of his that moves forward, there are five potential projects that fall by the wayside. We haven’t heard of quite that many unmade Rob Zombie movies, but we have heard of several over the years that never got off the ground… and unfortunately, most of them sounded pretty interesting. A little over a year ago, Zombie had said he didn’t know what his next movie is going to be, but he did know what it’s not going to be: he won’t be continuing his Firefly franchise, and he doesn’t want to make a sequel to The Munsters (which was poorly received). So while he figures out his next cinematic move, we we have put together a list of Rob Zombie Movies We Want To See!

No one confused early Sora demonstrations with art, but what startled filmmakers is these semi-professional and quasi-lifelike images introduced a doomsday scenario: Studios will use this rapidly evolving tech to replace them.
It’s a pervasive fear — with the notable exception of those filmmakers who are early adopters of generative artificial intelligence tools.

Fire Country has found immense success on Friday nights for CBS.
The firefighting drama stars Max Thieriot from Seal Team (Clay Spenser) and Bates Motel (Dylan Massett). He plays Bode Donovan (Leone).
The network has had lots of success with its NCIS Universe and the trio of FBI shows, so CBS wants to see if a Fire Country spin-off will work.
An upcoming episode of Fire Country is called Alert the Sheriff, and it is a planned backdoor pilot.
If CBS is happy with fan response and how the new characters work within the world of Fire Country, that episode will springboard into a new show called Sheriff Country.
This is called a backdoor pilot, where the characters from a planned show appear first on the primary show. Main characters for NCIS: Los Angeles appeared in a two-episode arc of NCIS, while Chicago P.D. characters first appeared on Chicago Fire for NBC.

Actor Nathan Fillion recently found himself cast in movies like The Suicide Squad and Superman: Legacy. But back before these roles, many were eager to see Fillion in superhero movies in some form. However, there was one role fans linked him to that Fillion just couldn’t see himself playing.

It seemed it was only a matter of time before Fillion did a superhero feature. He already had good professional relationships with two filmmakers connected with Marvel movies. He worked alongside Avengers director Joss Whedon in the cult classic show Firefly. He was also good friends with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, who he did Slither and Super with.
At the time, Fillion shared that he didn’t do a Marvel movie because he was tied up with another franchise.

Playing through Outcast: A New Beginning, immediately after playing the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection had me feeling like I was inadvertently taking part in a retro gaming week. The difference is that one of these titles was essentially a straight port of a game from 2004, and the other is a brand new 2024 release that is only available on current-gen platforms.
From reading that opening paragraph, you may be led to believe that I am going to spend the rest of this review bashing Outcast: A New Beginning for its outdated physics, and its sub-par character models, but in fact the opposite is true. Playing through this game feels like a love letter to a bygone era; the mid-tier.
Outcast: A New Beginning releases on March 15 and is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Actors Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic were once reportedly at odds with each other on the set of Castle. Neither have corroborated the reports. But if there’s one thing the two actors didn’t see eye-to-eye on, it was the relationship between the characters.

Back in the earlier years of Castle, the series was known to play up the romantic tension between Fillion’s and Katic’s characters. The two led completely different lives before crossing paths. Fillion’s Richard Castle was a crime novelist, whereas Katic’s Kate Beckett was a real-life officer. When Castle started investigating crimes alongside Kate, he sometimes proved to be a valuable asset to the police. This led to Castle gradually earning both the character’s respect and attention over time.

The search for the next "Suits" has begun! Aaron Korsh's legal drama series gained a whole new lease on life in 2023 thanks to Netflix, becoming the year's most-streamed show and giving USA Network's loyal middle-aged target demographic a reason to fist pump in vindication. The only question now is, what lucky show will follow in its footsteps? Surprisingly, an unlikely candidate has emerged in the form of "Resident Alien," a genre-blending cult favorite that's currently in the process of airing its third season on Syfy.
Anchored by fan-favorite performer and voice actor extraordinaire Alan Tudyk (the man who clucked his way into audiences' hearts as Heihei in "Moana" and wooed his own butt as Clayface in "Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine's Day Special"), "Resident Alien" has managed to climb its way into Netflix's Top 10 in the U.S. According to the streaming viewership aggregator FlixPatrol, it was...

Everyone has a TV character death that struck a raw nerve -- like Tara suddenly getting killed on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Or Cordelia abruptly dying on "Angel." Or Wash's shocking demise in the "Firefly" movie "Serenity." Being sadistic to his fans was kind of Joss Whedon's thing long before his fall from grace, is what I'm getting at.
Lance Sweets (John Francis Daley) being murdered on the orders of the corrupt Dr. Glen Durant (Jd Cullum) in the "Bones" season 10 premiere, "The Conspiracy in the Corpse," was another gut-punch of a TV death. Unless you knew what was going on behind the scenes, it must have come as a rather unexpected blow. It wasn't like he got offed in the lead-up to a season finale or at a point where his story appeared to be drawing to a close organically. Quite the opposite; things were going swimmingly for the boyish FBI psychologist,...

Okay, maybe the summer of "Suits" wasn't a fluke after all. Less than a year after the long-running USA Network legal drama took Netflix by storm, raking in some of the streamers' biggest viewership numbers in recent memory, NBC has ordered a pilot for a "Suits" spinoff set in Los Angeles (per Entertainment Weekly).
EW is reporting that the new "Suits" series -- which, in the style of many a procedural spinoff before it, is titled "Suits: LA" -- will feature a brand new character named Ted Black, and production on the pilot is set to begin in Vancouver next month. Original series creator Aaron Korsh is returning to write and executive produce the show, while EW also previously reported that cast members from the previous series could return at some point in the future.

"The Avengers" writer/director Joss Whedon may be long banished from the Marvel Cinematic Universe now, but his influence remains seeped into the whole enterprise. The screwball, genre-aware dialogue Whedon writes is now the McU's house style — if not a hindrance. Other writers have been aping it to diminishing returns ever since.
The behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Gavin Edwards, Dave Gonzales, and Joanna Robinson details how Marvel Studios first hired Whedon. His gain was another writer's loss; Zak Penn had already written a script for "The Avengers," but Whedon threw his version out and started from scratch. "There was a script. There just wasn't a script I was going to film a word of," Whedon said. This move is an early harbinger of how Whedon would make his style into Marvel's own.
As "MCU" notes, this wasn't the first time this had happened to Penn.

The origins of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" begin with the X-Men. A young Joss Whedon read their comic adventures, penned by Chris Claremont, and cites them as an influence on his work; teen heroine Buffy Summers herself is in the vein of Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat.
From 2004 to 2008, Whedon wrote the ongoing comic "Astonishing X-Men," teaming up with artist John Cassaday. Consider the timeframe: "Buffy" and "Angel" had wrapped as classics, "Firefly" was a freshly canceled-too-soon martyr, and Whedon hadn't cracked into the blockbuster movie mainstream with "The Avengers" yet, and allegations of his abusive behavior on set hadn't yet been publicized. His writing an "X-Men" comic felt like nerdy stars aligning.
Is "Astonishing X-Men" worth checking out? It's short and self-contained, which are rare blessings in superhero comics. Whedon also works overtime to repair the reputation of Scott Summers/Cyclops. In the concurrent "X-Men" movies, he was used only...

A history of the most underrated British science fiction of the 1970s is, largely, just a history of British science fiction of the 1970s. It gets a bad rap. Think “1970s British Sci-Fi” and your mind will be flooded with associations of dodgy special effects, less-than-perfect gender politics, and so much knitwear. That, and a certain time traveller with a predilection for scarves and jelly babies.
But the truth is the 70s was a golden age for British science fiction stories with ideas and ambition, completely unrestrained by any concept of production values. While even the most pedestrian attempt at modern science fiction telly feels it has to go toe to toe with the MCU’s latest CGI eyeball-blaster, a year after Star Wars was on our screens the Doctor was still routinely facing off against dressed like this, and it was better for it.
