It took a long time, but mainstream cartoons are finally coming out of the closet. Now, we can only hope they stay that way.
When live-action television began making inroads for gay representation during the turn of the century, animation remained a frustratingly straight (if frequently queer-coded) affair. The reasons behind the medium’s slowness were obvious and, predictably, homophobic. Animation is too often seen as content made for kids, and same-sex attraction is regarded as an “adult” topic. So, pearl-clutching TV critics would argue, children shouldn’t be exposed to “adult” (read: gay) characters through raunchy cartoons.
That’s not to say that there weren’t LGBTQ people in cartoons before the 2010s; Japanese anime, in particular, was slightly ahead of the curve on this front, with ’90s classics like “Sailor Moon” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion” featuring explicitly queer themes and love stories. But that content was often mercilessly...

The Masked Singer keeps viewers guessing week after week, as each celebrity guest is revealed. Part of the fun is watching the panel of judges – which includes Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger, and Robin Thicke – try to solve the mystery too. Alas, no one on The Masked Singer figured out that Holly Robinson Peete was the fairy. Here’s why her time on the show was so important to her.
Holly Robinson Peete was the fairy on ‘The Masked Singer’
Peete made her appearance on the show in 2023. And she recently joined the podcast Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef to discuss her experience as the fairy on The Masked Singer. Peete revealed singing was her “first love” and loved the chance to share her passion with audiences. But she also revealed she “wasn’t expecting” to stump the panel of judges.

When The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder debuted last year on Disney+, it called back to the bygone era of Black TV sitcoms in which its 2001 Disney Channel predecessor shined. One where Black families, culture and people were not only celebrated on the small screens in living rooms across the country, but the central focal point of multiple simultaneously airing (though mostly live-action) series.
Its return on Feb. 3, however, pointed to a stunning reality. While the original series aired in the 2000s alongside a handful of animated kids shows also featuring Black leads, including Filmore!, Static Shock, Tutenstein and Little Bill, there has since been only a handful of animated shows aimed at non-adult audiences that explicitly center Black leads and, more specifically, their families.

Hollywood keeps pushing the envelope with Black representation, but breaking boundaries is ongoing work. Many of the most successful pieces of media centering Black stories are based in violence, grief, and trauma, either historical or imagined. As essential as these stories are to understanding centuries of oppression, part of unlearning racial bias is recognizing that everyone experiences joy, sorrow, love, disappointment, and everything in between — that we relate more than imaginable to people we perceive as different.
As crucial as it is to learn the world’s (and the United States especially) history of horrific discrimination, it’s also important for audiences to witness stories of Black triumph, survival, and just plain silliness. It’s also critical for the creative voices behind these works, because larger audiences for a movie or series show studios and distributors that there’s a demand for Black stories and talent. It's hard to overstate the importance of Bruce W. Smith's "The Proud Family." The Disney Channel animated series was one of the first animated shows with a Black creator and a majority Black cast, unafraid to explore subjects like race, class, and cultural differences in a way that young audiences could understand. The show originally ran from 2001-2005, with 52 episodes, and the film, "The Proud Family Movie," marked the end of the series. That is, until Disney+ came calling and rebooted the series for a new generation.
Now in its second season, "The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder" continues the saga of The Proud Family and their diverse community of friends, family, and colleagues. /Film's own Rafael Motamayor recently spoke with show creator Bruce W. Smith and longtime producer Ralph Farquhar about continuing the series and gave some exclusive insight into what it's like working for the House of Mouse.

The early '00s were a fascinating time for animated shows. You still had plenty of genre-heavy cartoons that followed in the tradition of Saturday morning shows and the kind of experimental and irreverent tones of early Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon projects. But there was also a wave of cartoon comedy-dramas about tweens and teens that took a rather grounded approach to telling stories, while still offering some cartoony weirdness that makes them stand out -- shows like "As Told By Ginger," "The Weekenders," "Hey Arnold," and also "The Proud Family."
"The Proud Family," in particular, was a big deal for its time. It was one of the first animated shows with a Black creator and a Black cast, and it tackled complex themes like race and religion. Like "The Simpsons," it created a world filled with memorable side characters and one-off characters that made the world feel lived-in.

2022 has been a devastating year for the world of animation. The Oscars kicked things off by relegating animated feature films to nothing more than children's fodder, Netflix is slowly disintegrating its entire animation department, an animated voice-over legend left this mortal plane far too soon, some of the best animated films of the year were unceremoniously dropped on streaming instead of being given the opportunity to shine in theaters, and HBO Max has absolutely obliterated its animation catalog, recreating the very problem that Cartoon Network was created to solve. Animators are continuing to fight for fair wages and better work environments while the industry as a whole continues to treat the medium with the same modicum of respect given to a wet newspaper.

Receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was never in Billy Porter’s wildest dreams! The Tony-winning actor got the coveted honour on Thursday and dished to Et about the “magical” moment.
“You know, I have to say, with as huge as the dreams have been for me, I wasn’t thinking about a star,” he tells Et. “It just wasn’t a part of the conversation, it’s so magical and it just came out of nowhere and that’s what makes it so beautiful and it’s just such a surprise.”
Porter credits a piece of advice that was given to him, for helping him on the road to success.
“Just be raw, be authentic,” he says. “And let the chips fall where they may.”
In attendance was Porter’s husband, Adam Smith, and several other family members, including the “Kinky Boots” alum’s sister, who...

Aldis Hodge is a 36-year-old American actor known for various roles like in the TNT series Leverage (2008-2015), Straight outta Compton(2015), and most recently, 2022’s DC Black Adam. If you didn’t immediately recognize this actor, you need a refresher because he’s been on our screens for most of his life. Although for most of his acting career Aldis Hodge has played supporting roles in both series and movies, he is now getting more recognition for his talent. Hopefully, we’ll get to see him in even bigger blockbuster films. Some honorable mentions include Girlfriends (2000-2008), The Proud family (2021-), Straight Outta Compton (2015), Jack Reacher: Never

"Kim Possible" was only the second animated series made for Disney Channel (after "The Proud Family"), and it quickly became one of the cable channel's most popular shows. It's easy to see why: It had action, it had comedy, and it had one of the coolest Disney pets ever.

In the animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, vain ghosts, egotistical demons and a hilariously haunted park are no match for human teens Barney and Norma and talking dog Pugsley.
Neither are TV animation’s traditional age demographics. Lil Nas X is heading back out to the “Old Town Road” for a throwback performance of his earliest hit, this time as an animated country musician named June Bug on the Disney Plus series The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.
When a normally disco-ified Bobby Proud joins June Bug’s country ensemble, the rapper-singer’s character pulls a brazen power move. “Nah cuh, I’m the only one who plays guitar around here,” he tells him, making him ditch his electric keytar for a washboard instead. “Give this a try,...

Keke Palmer is everywhere you turn, and she's not slowing down anytime soon. From starring on "The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder" to Jordan Peele's highly anticipated thriller "Nope," the 28-year-old has kept her foot on the gas. Palmer spoke to Popsugar about being a booked and busy actor, starring in Peele's upcoming film, being a fellow Virgo, and her partnership with Ciroc Vodka Spritz and Sean "Diddy" Combs.
Trailers and posters for "Nope" have left us with more questions than answers. We know Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya star as siblings running a business at Haywood Ranch with a family history of working in Hollywood. The trailer also makes it clear that we should be scared, between the screaming, running, and teases of people who may not be human. Peele has kept it all very vague. When I ask Palmer if she can tell me about "Nope,...

It’s been a grueling three months since Marvel fans had a hit of the MCU in the form of Spider-Man: No Way Home and even longer since the last Marvel Disney+ series (Hawkeye). Thankfully that unbearable drought will be coming to an end with Disney+’s list of new releases for March 2022.
This month is highlighted by the arrival of Moon Knight on March 30. Oscar Isaac stars as the latest Marvel hero, a man with a fracturing personality and awesome power imbued by the Egyptian god Khonshu. Tonally, this seems like a really divergent take from the studio and the trailers promise some compelling mystery and bone-shattering punches if nothing else.

‘The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder’ Creators on How Reboot Was Adapted for New Era’s Expectations
“The Proud Family,” which originally ran on the Disney Channel from 2001 to 2005, was a quietly groundbreaking animated series, focused exclusively on a Black family growing up in modern America. In the years since, the show has amassed even more of a following and taken on even more cultural relevance. Now “The Proud Family” is back (on Disney+ this time) and at the perfect time, too.
This new “Proud Family” contains everything that you loved about the first iteration of the series but this time it is infused with more maturity. The first episode opens with Penny (once again voiced by Kyla Pratt) discovering that her body has changed; now she is a woman. There are other changes that you’ll notice right away too – Michael, who was coded as being gay, is openly gay this time around and there’s another new character (voiced by Keke Palmer) who has two dads.
