In early January, comedian Katt Williams went on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast and took aim at Cedric the Entertainer for stealing “my very best joke.” The bit in question — which involved a pantomime of driving with music blasting — was first performed by Katt in a 1998 appearance on ComicView, then reproduced by Cedric (according to Katt) for his set in Spike Lee’s The Original Kings of Comedy. Cedric called the accusations “revisionist history” on Instagram.
We’ve been down this road many times before. For much of the 20th century, joke stealing was an open secret. “All comedians steal from all comedians,” the legend Stan Laurel once mused. Some of the biggest names in comedy did it. Milton Berle was so blatant in his joke stealing that he earned the nickname “The Thief of Bad Gags.” Richard Pryor admitted on The Tonight Show that he ripped off his comedy idols,...

After "Saturday Night Live" ended season 48 a little prematurely back in the spring due to the Hollywood strikes beginning, the late night sketch comedy show returned for season 49 this weekend. Despite the fact that the Screen Actors Guild is still on strike while negotiating for a new deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), SAG-AFTRA gave its full support for the cast of "SNL" to return to work, which meant former cast member Pete Davidson finally got to make his hosting debut.
While it might seem like a quick turnaround for Davidson to return as host so soon after leaving at the end of season 47, plenty of other more recent cast members have come back to the show as host just as quickly, such as Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, and Bill Hader. However, since Davidson wasn't exactly known for many recurring characters or impressions, it didn't...

Remembering The Comedians Of Comedy, Netflix's First True Original Production (A Quasi-Oral History)
If I asked you to name the first original production from Netflix, what would you say? An educated guess might bring you to "House of Cards" or "Lilyhammer," and that's a fair assessment. While the former was Netflix's first piece of original programming produced specifically for the company's streaming service (released in February of 2013), the latter technically has the honor of being Netflix's first original streaming production (premiering on Netflix in February of 2012), even though it was only partially funded by Netflix and actually premiered in Norway first under the TV network NRK1.
But what if I told you that neither of these was the first true Netflix original? What if I told you Netflix produced their first original production even before they created the now-defunct Red Envelope Entertainment? Yes, before streaming, Netflix had a film financing and acquisition arm that shuttered in 2008 after investing in more than 100 films and...

Wanda Sykes has some questions for police about their time management after learning just how many tickets they give out on a daily basis.
In her penultimate show as “The Daily Show” guest host for the week, Sykes devoted an entire segment on Thursday night to discussing how police across the country dole out speeding tickets. According to the host, 112,000 speeding tickets are issued every day, and she was blown away by that number — and also, a bit confused.
“Yeah, that’s a lot of tickets,” Sykes marveled. “I’m like, where do they find the time to shoot people?”

Exclusive: Former MTV topper Van Toffler is back in a formal relationship with the company where he spent almost three decades as an executive. MTV Entertainment Group has signed a multi-picture deal with independent studio Gunpowder & Sky, co-founded and run by Van Toffler, former CEO of Viacom Media Networks Music & Logo Group. The pact follows Mtve’s collaboration with Gunpowder & Sky on Comedy Central’s Hot Mess Holiday movie, starring Kal Penn, which was recently nominated for two NAACP awards, and signals a push in that area for the ViacomCBS division.
Under the pact, Mtve and Gunpowder & Sky, led by CEO Toffler and fellow MTV alum, EVP Development and Production David Gale, will develop comedic movies for MTV Entertainment’s portfolio of brands and platforms.
This is a familiar territory for Toffler and Gale who built MTV’s movie business with MTV Films, which Toffler launched and oversaw and...

Steve Harvey has no plans for another stand-up comedy special and blames “cancel culture.”
“The only way I can do one more special is if it’s at the end of my television career because it will end my television career,” Harvey told media on Tuesday during the TCA panel for his ABC series Judge Steve Harvey airing Tuesday nights at 8 p.m.
“We’re in the cancel culture now. No stand-up [comedian] alive that is sponsor-driven can say anything he wants to. Chris Rock can’t. Kevin Hart can’t. Cedric the Entertainer can’t. D.L. A biopic about the late comedy legend Bernie Mac is in development at John Legend’s production company, Get Lifted, the music star’s producing partner Mike Jackson said on Thursday.
Jackson made the announcement during a Q&a with Legend at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, saying that a deal had just been made between the studio and Bernie Mac’s estate that “John doesn’t know about yet.”
“Look at you, breaking news,” the seemingly surprised Legend said.
Bernie Mac rose to prominence on the Chicago stand-up comedy circuit before becoming one of the biggest comedic stars of film and television in the 2000s, earning two Emmy nominations for his lead performance on “The Bernie Mac Show.” On the big screen, he was best known for appearing alongside Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer and D.L. New year, and a host of new Netflix additions to match.
While subscribers are currently mourning the loss of Friends – after going dark today, January 1st, the beloved sitcom won’t be available until HBO Max arrives in May – Netflix has today rolled out a bevy of fresh TV shows and movies to keep us entertained, including some truly unmissable horror properties.
From Event Horizon to Cloverfield, The Amityville Horror to the Tremors franchise, Netflix’s horror category has officially been restocked. There’s plenty to choose from, too, including the 2002 rendition of The Ring, which only makes us long for a competent retelling of the Japanese horror legend to right the wrongs of Rings (2017). At least we have the upcoming Grudge reboot to look forward to on Friday (or January 24th if you happen to be located in the United Kingdom).

“The Neighborhood” star Cedric the Entertainer is set to executive produce an untitled multi-camera project in the works at CBS, Variety has learned.
The series follows two young women who, after repeatedly being turned down by investors, hatch an outrageous plan to raise capital for their new sports app. According to sources, the project had been in development under the title “How to Be a White Guy,” with the two main characters recruiting a white man to pose as the CEO of their company.
The project hails from creators Adrienne Rose White and Aliee Chan, who will also executive produce along with co-writer Christopher Case. Eric Rhone of Cedric’s A Bird and a Bear Productions will also executive produce along with Jon Thoday, Richard Allen-Turner, David Martin, Jakob Markovits, and Aaron Brown of Avalon Entertainment. CBS Television Studios, where A Bird and a Bear currently has a development deal, will produce.

Black people are wishful, and white people are hopeful.
This is the crux of one of Cedric the Entertainer’s best stand-up routines, in which he compares the two races and explains that white people hope for the best while black people anticipate — and even court — confrontation.
Although Cedric told this joke nearly two decades ago in the hit concert movie “The Original Kings of Comedy,” this same broad perspective finds its way onto the maladroit but promising new CBS sitcom “The Neighborhood.” On the show, which premieres Oct. 1, Cedric — who also serves as executive producer — plays Calvin Butler, a middle-aged husband, father and auto mechanic who has to address his feelings on race relations when a young white family moves in next door.

When “BlacKkKlansman” had its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the rapturous reception signaled one thing — Spike Lee is back.
So it makes sense that when the timely crime drama opened at the domestic box office four months later, it earned Lee his best debut since 2006. Twelve years ago, “Inside Man” launched with $29 million and went on to generate an impressive $183 million worldwide. In between, Lee has delivered a series of theatrical misses. Many of the films that he released over the ensuing decade and change — works such as “Oldboy” and “Miracle at St. Anna” — lacked the pop of the filmmaker’s previous efforts. Critics are saying “BlacKkKlansman,” an alternately satiric and horrifying looking at hate groups in America, signals a return to form for the director. Its $10.8 million start in North America trails only “The Original Kings of Comedy’s” debut ($11 million) as Lee’s third-biggest opening of all time.

This weekend brought some welcome news: Ben Affleck’s latest, “The Accountant” (Warner Bros.), came in better than expected. And though “Kevin Hart: What Now?” (Universal) grossed only about half as much, they both did well compared to their cost.
But the overall box office continues to lag against 2015’s peak record numbers, dominated by such fourth-quarter entries as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” a Bond film and the final “Hunger Games.” It’s hard to imagine that 2016 totals can beat them, even with Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” in early November, J.K. Rowling’s latest “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” from Warners and Disney’s “Moana” closer to Thanksgiving.

Alex brings an innovative eye to treating patients week to week while also balancing the complications of her professional and romantic life. I think it’s safe to say that Steve Carell is a master of physical comedy. This is the man who famously once waxed his chest hair on the big screen. So it makes sense that The Office star is an executive producer and one of the first celebrity guests on Riot, a new extreme game show premiering tonight on Fox.
“I have no idea what I’m getting myself into,” Carell jokingly told EW before filming alongside his Office co-star Andy Buckley. The show is based on the international hit franchise Slide Show and puts two teams of celebrities...

Most documentaries focused on comedians that hit the big screen are shaped as concert films, featuring a live performance recorded during a nationwide tour. Eddie Murhpy, Kevin Hart, Sarah Silverman, The Blue Collar Comedy Tour and The Original Kings of Comedy are just some of the successful examples, but there are plenty of stand-up specials out there that don't make it to movie theaters. Well, actor and comedian Kevin Pollak (A Few Good Men, The Usual Suspects) is looking to bring a taste of the comedian's lifestyle to the big screen with a documentary called Misery Loves Comedy, which he'll direct himself. Read on! You may not know, but Pollak has been doing stand-up comedy for years (watch a clip of him on "The Late Show with David Letterman" right here), and he hopes to open people's eyes to what drives these comedian's senses of humor and more. Pollak says:...

There was good news and bad news at the weekend box office as "Despicable Me 2" led the charge to a new holiday record, but "The Lone Ranger" stumbled badly and looks like one of the biggest bombs of 2013.
Easily finishing first for the frame, "Despicable" brought in an estimated $82.5 million for the three day weekend and a total $142 million since its Wednesday opening. Made on a reported budget of $76 million, the animated sequel shouldn't have much trouble topping its predecessor's total gross of $251.5 million and looks to overtake "Monsters University" as the top grossing animated movie of the year.
"Despicable" can also take pride in accounting for a huge chunk of the $220 million three-day weekend box office -- a new record for a Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Coming in second but causing a lot of noise with its disappointing performance, "Ranger" nabbed $29.4 million for the three day weekend...

"Despicable Me 2" and "The Lone Ranger" have received the lion's share of press over the last week, but it's "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" that has become a surprise box office hit. According to numbers released by Deadline.com, Hart's stand-up comedy film has already earned $7.4 million in ticket sales during its first two days of release. Per Variety, "Let Me Explain" could have $29 million in its coffers by Sunday night.
Should Hart's film -- which was filmed at a sold-out Madison Square Garden appearance last year -- reach that lofty tally during opening weekend, it would already become the fourth highest stand-up comedy film of all time, behind only "Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip" ($36 million), "The Original Kings of Comedy" ($38 million) and "Eddie Murphy Raw" ($50 million).
That "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" is a big success shouldn't be too much of a surprise. Hart's last stand-up comedy film,...

When four of the most popular Black comedians of the time came together for a stand-up comedy film directed by Spike Lee, a lot of people watched, and laughed. Continuing an established black stand-up tradition paved by Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy and Red Foxx, "The Original Kings of Comedy" (2000) saw Bernie Mac, Steve Harvey, Dl Hughley and Cedric The Entertainer reprise popular, controversial topics of race, Black family dynamics and religion with distinctly different twists. In one of his most hilarious routines, the late Bernie Mac gives new meaning to "Milk and Cookies" as he describes the unruly behavior of a niece and nephew who torment him with their requests. Disney-abc made the announcement this morning. Stand-up comedian and actor Cedric The Entertainer has been named the new host of the syndicated Who Wants To Be A Millionaire beginning with its 12th season this fall. Following some chatter during Natpe last week, I have learned that Cedric The Entertainer has closed a three-year deal to replace Meredith Vieira as host the syndicated version of quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. I hear the multi-million pact will pay Cedric close to what Vieira was making in the final years of her 11-season stint on the Disney-abc show, which she’s hosted from its launch in 2002. Millionaire, which tapes in advance, will continue to air Vieira-hosted originals through May and repeats through the summer, with Cedric expected to take over in September. The Millionaire gig won’t interfere with the actor-comedian’s TV Land comedy series Soul Man, which is slated to begin filming its second season in March. Cedric will shoot his first season of Millionaire in September. CAA-repped Cedric is the second member of The Original Kings Of Comedy standup troupe to be...

NBC is piloting a game show hosted by actor-comedian D.L. Hughley, teaming with ITV Studios on a program called "Who's Bluffing Who?"
