An expanded version of writer/director Ken’ichi Ugana’s 2021 short film Visitors, Visitors (Complete Edition) is probably the strangest feature to play at this year’s FRomford Horror Film Festival. And at sixty-one minutes, including credits, Visitors (Complete Edition) is probably the shortest as well. In other words, it’s a lot of weirdness packed into a short running time.
It all begins innocently enough as three friends Haruka, Nana, and Takanori drop in on their bandmate Souta who has dropped out of touch with them and everyone else for that matter. They find his house covered in old newspapers, fliers and other assorted papers. But when he finally answers the door he invites them in for tea. That was mistake number one. Over the course of its 50-year existence, Troma has helped launch the careers of filmmakers like Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Eli Roth (Hostel), along with countless actors who went on to long careers, but their biggest export by any internal metric — financial success, brand recognition, franchisability, fan base — is 1984’s The Toxic Avenger.
The film is preceded by an “extreme violence” warning. The gore is indeed graphic — the first kill features a kid’s head being run over by a car, firmly establishing that no one is safe and nothing is off limits — but it could use about a dozen more trigger warnings by today’s standards. If you can be offended, you will be offended by the boundary-pushing content that includes (but is certainly not limited to) racism, homophobia, ableism, and sexual misconduct — yet there is substance behind the sleaze.

Written and directed by Blair, the film is said to be a “contemporary reimaging” of Troma Entertainment’s successful 1984 low-budget action-comedy, Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will serve as producers.
Drawing parallels to an eco-friendly ‘Deadpool’, the original centred on a struggling everyman after he is pushed into a vat of toxic waste, he is transformed into a mutant freak who must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.

Two years after making his directorial debut with “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” Macon Blair is stepping behind the camera for Legendary’s “Toxic Avenger” reboot. The actor-turned-filmmaker, whose on-screen resume includes everything from “Blue Ruin” and “Green Room” to “The Florida Project” and “Logan Lucky,” will both write and direct. Variety first broke the news, including the fact that Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman and Michel Herz are producing and Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter of Legendary are overseeing the project.
The former two also directed the 1984 original, a midnight-movie staple that was followed by the sequels “The Toxic Avenger Part II,” “The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie,” and “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV”. “The Toxic Avenger” tells the tried-and-true story of a 98-pound janitor who falls into a vat of toxic waste (as you do) and, imbued with newfound powers,...

Macon Blair has been tapped to write and direct Legendary’s reboot of the cult classic “The Toxic Avenger,” sources tell Variety.
Legendary acquired the feature film rights in December and have quickly made the project a high priority at the studio. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment will serve as producers with Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter overseeing for Legendary.
Kaufman and Herz produced the original 1984 comedy, set in the fictional town of Tromaville, N.J., and centered on a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s chased out a second story window by bullies and lands in a drum of toxic waste. The chemicals cause him to transform into the Toxic Avenger, who has superhuman size and strength and stands up to bullies and corruption.

If you were a kid in the ’80s or early ’90s, then you may remember how we were graced with animated series and toylines pertaining to franchises we were probably too young for. Seriously, my toy box included the likes of RoboCop, the Terminator, Rambo and even some of the Toxic Crusaders, a child-friendly take on Troma’s cult classic, The Toxic Avenger.
So, whether you’ve been on board with the live action flicks from the get-go, or saw one as a kid thinking it’d be like its animated counterpart and were instead treated to an unforgettable learning experience, you may be thrilled to learn that Toxic Avengers 5 is in the earliest stages of development – even if a remake of the original is said to be on the way as well.

16 years ago today was (arguably) the beginning of the modern superhero movie era. Even if you give that distinction to Spider-Man or Iron Man, it’s undeniable that the first X-Men movie paved the way for the proliferation of caped heroes in Hollywood today. In 2000, the only other superhero movies released were negatively received comedies The Specials and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, and M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable — a superhero movie in a time before they could be baldfaced superhero movies. Now, everyone wants in on the superhero genre, which is now producing the buzziest and most lucrative blockbusters of 2016. The ninth and most recent X-Men movie, Apocalypse, ultimately delivered disappointing numbers in the ever-more-crowded superhero line-up, but that didn’t stop Fox from ordering a pilot for what looks to be a series based in the X-Men world. Other notable July 14 happenings in pop culture history: • 1966:...

Two outings for The Toxic Avenger and a surprisingly good vampire movie feature in this month's Bottom Shelf...
The advent of high definition technology has ushered in an era of unsurpassed quality in terms of the home-cinema experience. With TVs now able to match filmmakers' original visions closer than ever, the path has been cleared for the true maverick masters of cinema to shine on the small screen. Which brings us to Troma Entertainment head honchos Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, whose final two Toxic Avenger sequelsmake their way onto Blu-ray this month.
Not by any stretch of the imagination a pair of essential HD releases (you could argue the grainy footage of any Troma film is best viewed on ancient VHS), The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation Of Toxie and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV are what they are: both the best and worst of Kaufman...

Actor in talks to star in remake of 1984 action comedy about mutated man who wreaks revenge on bullies
Arnold Schwarzenegger is in talks to star in a remake of the classic 1984 cult film The Toxic Avenger, about a mutated hero who wreaks bloody revenge on his erstwhile tormentors, according to Variety.
Schwarzenegger's role remains unclear, but he will not be playing the title character. The Toxic Avenger is traditionally a seven-stone weakling who is transformed into a muscle-bound monstrosity after being dumped in a barrel of toxic waste by a gang of bullies. Lloyd Kaufman's original film was a flop upon release but subsequently gained huge popularity on the New York midnight screening circuit: three sequels eventually emerged, culminating in 2000's Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, and there has also been a musical and a cartoon spin-off.

Revenge is a dish best served cold … and sometimes without even knowing what the entrée is. In Chop, Will Keenan stars as a man being tortured — both psychologically and physically — by a mysterious stranger (Timothy Muskatell) who claims Keenan wronged him in the past, despite Keenan’s insistence that he simply doesn’t remember the dude. With no apologies forthcoming, Keenan is ordered to first dispatch certain family members, then pieces of his own body in Trent Haaga’s bloody horror comedy.
Chop is Haaga’s directing debut and, made in 2011, still his only directing credit. Also an actor, Haaga first worked with Keenan on the set of a pair of Troma films, Terror Firmer and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV. They learned well under sensei Lloyd Kaufman with Chop being reasonably described as Troma-lite with a fun manic and absurdist tone with some fairly gory sequences.

The horror-comedy. Perhaps the most difficult sub-genre of film to perfect. Most attempts at horror-comedy don't come off well. Either they're too scary without enough comedy or (more frequently) mostly humor with not enough horror. A lot of times they just come across as trying too hard and cheesy. But every once in a while a movie gets it just right. And when that happens, audiences embrace and celebrate the brilliant and elusive successful horror-comedy.
That being said, in celebration of the upcoming release of Trent Haaga's Chop, we did our best to put together a list of 10 horror-comedies (in no particular order) that we feel are the most impressive efforts in the field. Wocka, wocka, wocka!

Vampires and zombies. Cops and corpses. Murderers and mad scientists. All parts an actor might be called on to play-and all will likely put you in the vicinity of fake blood. Here are a few tips for working with this sticky, sinister substance.1. Wear your laundry-day underwear.Even if you're protected by a multilayered costume, there's no guarantee the stuff you've got on underneath will survive a day of pseudo-gore. Actor David Mattey sacrificed a few unmentionables while being drenched in 18 gallons of fake blood during a gory death scene in the cult-classic film "Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV.""The underwear I had on under my costume for that scene was pink for the rest of its life," he says. "Wear stuff that you aren't in love with, 'cause you may have to throw it out."2. Invest in a can of shaving cream.Your skin may also bear the brunt of.

Even though Troma Entertainment's Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead had a relatively small theatrical run at around three hundred theatres nationwide, it still managed to garner itself a #1 per-theater average. To say thank you to fans, the full movie has hit online, and you can now watch it for free! Take that, all you cheapskates out there!
"We've got millions of fans, but it's difficult for them to see our movies due to economic blacklisting," stated Lloyd Kaufman, President of Troma Entertainment and director of Poultrygeist. "For example, theatrical and home video hits like Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV and Trey Parker's Cannibal! The Musical have never played on any American TV stations – not even Showtime! Instead of taking a chicken feed TV deal that would put Poultrygeist in a chicken shit timeslot, we decided to just give it away so all of our fans can see it for free.

It seems that even B-movies are not immune from Hollywood's current fixation with rehashing and repackaging failed or forgotten franchises for a new audience. According to Deadline, Troma Entertainment's campy The Toxic Avenger is the latest movie property to be rebooted, courtesy of producers Akiva Goldsman, Richard Saperstein and Charlie Corwin of Corwin's Original Media. Deadline describes the new Toxic Avenger as "a green superhero for these environmentally conscious times."

One of the great, gory gems of the '80s was Troma films' <>The Toxic Avenger, the terrifically bad tale of a lowly janitor who falls into a tub of toxic waste and becomes an unlikely superhero. It spawned an unbelievable three sequels, all of them varying degrees of stupid and terrible, and was something of an underground staple for teenage horror/comic fans in the mid- to late-'80s (I never saw the fourth entry, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, released in 2000 -- well past its expiration date).
Believe it or not, The Toxic Avenger is coming back, with a vengeance. According to the fellas at Bloody Disgusting, Original Media has picked up the rights to the Troma character, and will begin releasing no less than four new movies, as well as an animated TV series and a series of comic books based on the character (not too unusual,...

The first time I watched my screener copy of Deadgirl, I silently took it out of my player, placed it in its case, and put it on my shelf. My thoughts after watching the film were so upsetting that I couldn't quite articulate my feelings about it. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I knew I had to watch it again to organize my thoughts, but for some reason, my hand refused to pick up that disc and put it back in the player.
And when I finally did watch Deadgirl again for the purposes of this review, I remembered what it was that was keeping me from watching. Her eyes. Deadgirl is on one level a perfectly functional zombie flick (and quite literal,...

What's this? A Toxic Avenger 5 ? Yep, Lloyd Kaufman and the team at Troma are collecting funds for another installment in the franchise. And as you can see, there will be two new additions to the family, "The Toxic Twins." No word yet on exact plot, but you can imagine where the plot turns with this motley brood you see below. The last film, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV , arrived nine years ago. Kaufman's past due for a new film, wouldn't you say?...
