Pope John XXIII had a big impact on my life. I was born into the post World War II Catholic Church and my elementary school life was in the pre Vatican II type Catholicism, with its emphasis on rules and law rather than the spirit of love and freedom in Jesus.

Then when I was in high school, a Catholic one, Pope John XXIII brought about Vatican II and the our Sisters of Loretto were so enthused about it and helped us to appreciate what changes were coming into the Church ... it was a wonderful exciting time.

Seeing this show brought back that enthusiasm ..the remembrance of what was important in my faith... I loved this show. And I had it on tape and would show Catholics younger than myself what a wonderful Pope John XXIII had been... this pope is now Blessed John XXIII and Charles Durning's performance show why we will someday call him Saint John XXIII .. Durning brings out John's humor and love of Christ in a warm and authentic manner.

Durning was fantastic in the lead. He brought life to the man in a very believable way. I particularly thought the interaction between the Pope and the Cardinals was not only fun to watch, but brought out the strength of John XXIII's personality in an area not many people realized. Considering that many thought him to be just an elderly, interim Pope, he certainly had a great impact on the Catholic religion throughout the world. And it's still being felt. He had a lot in common with Pope Benedict XVI in his farsightedness and strength belying his age. PBS should show the movie again, sometime - now would be a good time with the recent visit to many countries by the current Pope.
