Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has launched development on What Kids Want, a new feature scripted by the Like a Boss duo of Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly, sources tell Deadline.
The film follows up the high concept comedies What Women Want (2000), starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt, and What Men Want (2019), starring Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan, both of which were distributed by Paramount. While the former centered on a man suddenly gifted (or cursed?) with the ability to hear the thoughts of women, the latter reversed the equation. The new film will, of course, involve a look into the minds of children.
Todd Garner will produce for Broken Road Productions, alongside Gina Mathews and Grant Scharbo for Little Engine Entertainmemt. Matthews comes to the project after producing What Women Want, along with such rom-coms as 13 Going on 30, All My Life (alongside Garner) and Isn’t It Romantic?...

Acclaimed Chinese film director Chen Daming is expected to direct “The Peking Express,” a book-to-film adaptation of the story of an infamous train robbery that took place 100 years ago.
The non-fiction book was written Beijing-based writer and lawyer James Zimmerman and was an ‘Editor’s Choice’ selection by the New York Times. It describes the raid on a luxury express train by Chinese bandits in Shandong Province in 1923 and the ensuing six-week hostage standoff that captivated the world. Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to return to the holiday genre with Amazon MGM Studios’ The Man With the Bag.
Adam Shankman is directing the family Christmas comedy that will see Schwarzenegger star alongside Alan Ritchson, whose involvement was previously announced. Allan Rice wrote the script for the movie that counts Ritchson, Lawrence Grey, Ben Everard, Reg Tigerman and Dan Spilo as producers.
The Man With the Bag centers on Santa Claus learning that his magic bag has been swiped, leading Old St. Nick to team up with Vance, a reformed thief and denizen of the naughty list, to get it back. The duo also enlist Vance’s daughter and a team of misfit elves to help them save Christmas.
Schwarzenegger, who captivated Oscar viewers over the weekend by reuniting with Twins cohort Danny DeVito, stars on the Netflix action-comedy series Fubar, which is set to return for its second season.

See if you can guess who recently said these words: “We went in over budget. It was a challenging project in that way. It’s like there could have never been enough money for the project. We didn’t have endless funds from a studio. This was a very independent project that I was self-financing.”
Did you guess global powerhouse multi-hyphenate Jennifer Lopez? She’s just the latest female creative to lament the state of Hollywood and its lack of funding for female creatives. Maybe it really is as bleak as they say.
While Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” made a billion dollars at the box office and shattered the record for both the highest-grossing film ever to be released by Warner Bros. and ever directed by a woman, studios are still gun-shy at providing funding for female-fronted projects. Why? Well, it’s all about the fallacy of what sells — doll be damned.

Mel Gibson is the Oscar-winning actor and director who has had his fair share of highs and lows, due in large part to several self-inflicted scandals. Let’s look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1956, Gibson and his family moved from New York to Australia, where he first came to prominence as an actor thanks to George Miller‘s original “Mad Max” trilogy, plus leading roles in Peter Weir‘s “Gallipoli” and “The Year of Living Dangerously.” He had equal success in the US, starring in everything from action films (the “Lethal Weapon” franchise) to romantic comedies (“What Women Want”).
He first hit the Oscar jackpot with the 1995 historical epic “Braveheart,” in which he also starred as Scottish warrior William Wallace. That film brought his wins in Best Picture and Best Director. He had similar directorial success with the controversial box-office bonanza “The Passion of the Christ...

Nancy Meyers has written a love letter to Cary Grant by recommending his screwball comedies and classics like North by Northwest and The Philadelphia Story as part of the December 2023 Turner Classic Movies lineup in her own TCM Picks video.
“He’s a brilliant prototype for a leading man in a romantic comedy certainly. And I would be lying if I said I didn’t think of him sometimes as I’m writing. You can picture him doing it and it makes you better,” Meyers, whose rom-com canon includes box office performers like Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and What Women Want, tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Her TCM movie picks follow Meyers insisting she has viewed most Cary Grant movies dozens of times, not least to study the iconic star’s slapstick humor and verbal sparring with leading ladies to see beneath his debonair looks and onscreen charisma, to the...

The premise of Nancy Meyers' 2006 romance "The Holiday" is rather high concept. Iris (Kate Winslet), a reporter in England, has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend. Amanda (Cameron Diaz), a Los Angeles native and showbiz impresario, has just done the same. By chance, the two heartbroken women discover a want-ad in the newspaper wherein they would swap homes for the holidays and live in each other's respective towns. Amanda, while in England, finds some unexpected romantic company with Iris' visiting brother Graham (Jude Law). The two decide to have a fling, but end up seeing each other more and more. Iris, meanwhile, settling in L.A., finds herself drifting closer and closer toward a friend of her ex, a charming and funny dude named Miles (Jack Black). The film also features Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Kathryn Hahn, and John Krasinski. Lindsay Lohan makes a cameo.

The Walt Disney Company has been synonymous with animation ever since Mickey Mouse's debut in 1928's "Steamboat Willie." Almost 100 years later and Disney is not so much a little mouse but an enormous whale lunging through the media landscape and devouring properties such as Marvel, Pixar, and 20th Century Studios.Disney's holdings are so vast that its catalog ranges from "Bambi" and "A Bug's Life" to "Predator," "Die Hard," "Family Guy," and "The Simpsons," but that doesn't mean the company hasn't tripped up. On the contrary -- many Disney films have been financial blunders, even beloved works such as "Pinocchio," the initial failure of which caused Walt Disney to be, according to his friend and colleague Joe Grant, "very, very depressed."
The fortunes of "Pinocchio" have changed since its release in 1940 -- numerous rereleases pulled its lifetime grosses to over $120 million -- but that can't be said of other Disney productions.

Film industry observers have been captivated in recent weeks by the ongoing negotiations surrounding Nancy Meyers’ upcoming romantic comedy “Paris Paramount.” The film, which is set to star Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Owen Wilson, and Michael Fassbender, was originally set up at Netflix with a reported budget of $130 million. But disagreements about the film’s final budget (Meyers and her team were reportedly seeking an additional $20 million) eventually led Netflix to scrap the project.
Now “Paris Paramount” is being shopped to other studios, with Warner Bros. reportedly in the mix. And if nothing else, the negotiations have attracted plenty of additional attention for the film. Meyers has been a reliable hitmaker for decades, directing smart romantic comedies like “What Women Want,” “It’s Complicated,” and “Something’s Gotta Give.” But if “Paris Paramount” is ever completed, it will likely be her highest profile project in quite some time.

A day removed from Netflix walking away from Nancy Meyers’ next film, which some reports pegged was shaping up to be the most expensive rom-com ever made, Warner Bros. Pictures is now circling acquiring the project, IndieWire has learned.
No deals are in place just yet and everything is in early days, but if it does go forward, it would almost certainly now be released theatrically. That would certainly help considering estimates that the film could be budgeted between $130-150 million (A source told IndieWire on Wednesday that the $130 million figure is inaccurate and that the film was greenlit for a different amount).
Though talent like Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Owen Wilson, and Michael Fassbender were all circling the film, which is tentatively titled “Paris Paramount,” it’s also unclear whether any of that cast would carry over on the project should it land at Warner Bros., or if that same budget keeps.

The Nancy Meyers movie that recently fell apart at Netflix over budget issues may be revived at Warner Bros.
After being set up at Netflix for over a year, Meyers’ long-awaited return to the director’s chair began to fall apart last week over disagreements about the budget. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warners, attracted to the idea of a ready-made hot project with an A-list cast and possible summer start date, may be stepping in to pick it up. Exploratory talks are underway, according to several sources.
Scarlett Johansson was attached to play the lead role in Meyers’ feature, with Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender also eying the project. Meyers will write, direct and produce the comedy, which is currently known as Paris Paramount, although it is not clear if that’s the actual title, a working title or a code name.

Netflix has “axed” a new Nancy Meyers romantic comedy following a dispute with the director.
The filmmaker has lined up her next project, which will be her first feature film since The Intern in 2015.
Titled Paris Paramount, the comedy, announced in April 2022, follows a filmmaking duo who reunite on set after a failed romance years before.
Paris Paramount is eyeing an A-list cast, including Scarlett Johansson and Owen Wilson alongside Penélope Cruz and Michael Fassbender.
According to Deadline, it’s this cast that may have contributed to Netflix canning the project, as Meyers is said to have requested a higher budget to fulfill an $80m (£65.8m) payment to the main cast members.
The film was originally budgeted at $130m (£106.9m), which is $100m (£82.2m) more than The Intern.
The streaming service was ready to commit to this price – but the outlet claims that Meyers wanted $30m (£24.6m) more, which has...

Update [Tuesday March 14, 11:14 p.m.]: Moviegoers agonizing over the breakdown of Nancy Meyers’ latest film (one that was meant to bring her out of retirement), don’t cry into your cashmere just yet. News hit earlier on Tuesday that Netflix was no longer developing the new rom-com from the iconic director, but sources with knowledge of the project said that filmmakers are looking into other options to get it to screen. The untitled film was reported to star Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender. Pending talent availability, the project will be shopped to prospective buyers as a package, one source added. Representatives for Meyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A new Nancy Meyers movie that was meant to go forward at Netflix, a romantic comedy that had actors such as Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Owen Wilson, and Michael Fassbender all circling and that had a reported budget of upwards of $130 million, will not be moving forward at Netflix, an individual with knowledge told IndieWire.
The film, which had a reported, working title of “Paris Paramount,” would’ve been Meyers’ first since 2015’s “The Intern.” But $130 million is a steep budget for a genre that usually costs way less. A source told IndieWire that the $130 million figure is inaccurate and that the film was greenlit for a different amount. As reported in multiple outlets, Meyers and the streamer reportedly could not come to an agreement on the scope of the budget. If it did go forward, it easily would’ve been the most expensive romantic comedy of all time.
Netflix had no comment.

Netflix is shutting down its Nancy Meyers movie, the star-studded romantic comedy that was expected to be her first directing vehicle in nearly a decade.
According to sources, Netflix and Meyers could not come to an agreement on the budget. Meyers is said to have asked for a budget of at least $150 million, but the studio did not want to go over $130 million. It was a steep price tag for a genre that is usually more in the midbudget range and one that could have made it the most expensive romantic comedy of all time. Meyers, who last directed the 2015 Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro feature The Intern, has commanded budgets on the higher end for the genre and is known for her work with big stars such as Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep. She is also known for her Architectural Digest-worthy production design.

Netflix has pulled the plug on Nancy Meyers’ $130 million ensemble comedy “Paris Paramount,” The Wrap has learned.
Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender and Owen Wilson were previously in talks for roles in the film which centered on an above-the-line filmmaking duo who reunite on set after falling in and out of love with one another.
“Paris Paramount” would have been Meyers’ return to the director’s chair since helming 2015’s “The Intern,” which starred Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway.

The filmmaker behind films like What Women Want, The Intern, and Something’s Gotta Give, Nancy Meyers, is assembling an A-list cast for her next movie. According to reports, Scarlett Johansson, Owen Wilson, Penelope Cruz, and Michael Fassbender could join Meyers’ next feature-length project insiders refer to as Paris Paramount.
We hear Johansson is circling the lead role, with sources saying the story revolves around a talented young writer/director who falls head over heels for a producer. After taking the entertainment industry by storm to do several successful projects, the couple ends their union romantically and professionally. Later, the duo finds themselves working alongside one another when a unique project crosses their path, forcing them back into an old routine plagued with complications and overbearing Hollywood personalities.
The plot shares similarities with Meyers’ Hollywood experience and her longtime romantic and professional relationship with Charles Shyer, another of Tinseltown’s writer-director-producer combos.

[Editor’s note: Grosses for films from 2019 and earlier are adjusted to approximate 2022 ticket prices, using 2019 ticket prices plus an estimated 20 percent increase to date.]
It all starts for real with previews that begin today at 2pm Ct in the U.S./Canada. In 14 countries, they’re already on day two; by the weekend, most other countries — including the critical China — will be screening “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney). It’s the most-anticipated film of 2022; more importantly, it’s poised to make everyone forget the theatrical doldrums or die trying.
Projections don’t guarantee the year’s biggest opening, but it should be in range. Its competitors are “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (187.4 million) and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (181.3 million). A year ago this weekend, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” opened to 260.1 million, second only to the 2019 “Avengers: Endgame” (420 million adjusted).
A pre-Christmas weekend as blockbuster launchpad is not a James Cameron invention, but he is a pioneer in the space. Pre-“Titanic,” the holiday seemed unfriendly to the traditional tentpoles. Too many movies.

When the Netflix series “Tiny Pretty Things” premiered in mid-December of 2020, expectations were high that this was certainly the next big thing from Netflix.
True to the hype, it didn’t take so long before the show claimed a top spot on the global ranking of Netflix shows to watch. The glory was short-lived — for just eight days — before it was unseated by another Netflix original, “Bridgerton.”
Season one of the show ended with tons of unresolved drama — as well as a cliffhanger — and for a show with such hype, expectations were that the show would renew for a second season.
It’s been months since the finale of the first season, however, and there is no news yet about a second season.
Where has the show gone? Has it been canceled or will it renew for another season? Here’s all we know about what happened to “Tiny Pretty Things.

Nancy Meyers is bringing her filmmaking talents (and her immaculate kitchens) to Netflix, where she’ll write, direct and produce a new feature film.
News of the partnership comes after Meyers and Netflix teamed to release the short film “Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish),” which debuted on the streamer’s social channels in 2020. The special project brought together the cast of “Father of the Bride” and “Father of the Bride Part II” — Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Kieran Culkin, George Newbern and Martin Short — for the first time in 25 years, with Robert De Niro, Florence Pugh, Alexandra Shipp and Ben Platt added to the mix. Meyers wrote and directed the Banks family reunion clip (produced by Reese Witherspoon), which benefitted World Central Kitchen.
Details about the new film are scarce, though the project is described as an ensemble comedy, a formula which Meyers has mastered over her career.

Michael Constantine, who played Gus, the father of Nia Vardalos’ Toula Portokalos in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” by far the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, died on Aug. 31. He was 94.
Constantine’s agent confirmed the news of his death to Variety. He died of natural causes.
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” scored a domestic gross of $241 million in 2002; No. 2 on the list is “What Women Want” with $183 million. The film drew a SAG Awards nomination for outstanding performance by the cast of a theatrical motion picture.
As Roger Ebert recounted, Constantine’s Gus “specializes in finding the Greek root for any word (even ‘kimono’), and delivers a toast in which he explains that ‘Miller’ goes back to the Greek word for apple, and ‘Portokalos’ is based on the Greek word for oranges, and so, he concludes triumphantly, ‘In the end, we’re all fruits.’ ”

The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Later on in the month, Mortal Kombat (Sept.
