Never underestimate the power of toys and merchandising. Toys helped turn "Star Wars" into an empire — and got Harrison Ford mad. They also literally saved "Mobile Suit Gundam" from cancelation and turned that anime into one of the biggest Japanese media institutions, yet nearly ruined "Cowboy Bebop." Surprisingly, toys even helped bring Hideaki Anno's subversive and weird vision of "Shin Godzilla" to life.
"Shin Godzilla" is a fascinating experiment in how to reinvent a popular franchise, as well as one of the best movies starring Godzilla ever made. Anno, who also wrote and directed "Neon Genesis Evangelion," delivered a different take on the Toho icon that is more political, more satirical, and updates the nuclear analogies of the original 1954 "Godzilla" movie to modern times by drawing inspiration from the Japanese government's reaction to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. It additionally helped usher in a new golden age for the King...

When we sit and watch the first episode of an original anime, we truly don’t know what we’re getting ourselves into. There’s no manga to turn to, which creates an opportunity for us to formulate our own theories of what we think will happen next. It’s fun, but also excruciating when you can’t look up what happens after a particularly agonizing cliffhanger. I’m looking at you Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch From Mercury Episode 12. The late Satoshi Kon was amongst the most prominent Japanese animators, with his works transcending the world of anime and manga, thus creating a modern division of the genre, which chiefly addressed a more mature audience. However, he did not accomplish that via sex and violence, but through the profundity of his themes and a complex style of presentation. The former becomes evident in his nightmarish worlds of terror that are based on concepts like fixation, publicity and the perspective of reality and personal identity, while the latter is clear through the mixture of fantasy and reality in the surrealistic environments of his movies. Additionally, he was equally elaborative as a designer and animator; hence, his works amount to masterpieces, both visually and in content.
Satoshi Kon was born on October 12, 1963 in Kushiro, Hokkaido. Early on, he became a fan of anime and manga, chiefly “Mobile Suit Gundam” and “Space Battleship Yamato...

One of the less public-facing key talents at the most publicly scrutinized animation studio in the world, cinematographer Atsushi Okui joined Studio Ghibli in 1993 and has worked on nearly every film from legendary director Hayao Miyazaki since, among them Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and his first feature in a decade, The Boy and the Heron.
With that film now in wide North American release from Gkids, we caught up with Okui to gain insight into the particulars of his job title, the process of working with iconic directors, and whether Miyazaki’s reputation for technophobia might be (a little) overblown.

“Juvenile” marks the directorial debut of Takashi Yamazaki, one of Japan’s most popular filmmakers working today. While lacking originality, it’s charm makes for a commendable first effort. The project was conceived by Shirogumi, an animation and visual effects studio Yamazaki had worked for since 1986 and continues to collaborate with. Written and directed by him, it is his first collaboration with the visual effects company Robot Communications, who, like Shirogumi, he continues to work with frequently. While fairly obscure overseas, the feature was a hit for its native release and international premiere at the Gifoni Film Festival in Italy. The robot that appears in it, Tetra, has remained fairly popular in Japanese pop culture.

In many respects, the ‘80s are highlighted as a boom period for anime, something perhaps unwittingly foretold by Mobile Suit Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino in his famous “Anime New Century Declaration” — a promo event for the “Ms Gundam” compilation movie “Mobile Suit Gundam 1” that unexpectedly drew a crowd numbering in the thousands. The event was emblematic of that coming explosion — anime production reaching newfound scale, finding larger audiences in turn, and maturing as both a medium and an industry. It would be a decade that saw more confident spending, bigger original productions, and a much deeper roster as new creators.
In a retrospective piece about the moment, “Anime: A History” author Jonathan Clements wrote that while Tomino would become a figurehead, his “new world order” would belong to the next generation. It would be a dynamic new age defined by works like the famous Daicon III & IV Opening Animations, made...

Anime and manga are filled with stories that are supposedly anti-violence but still end up glorifying violence with undeniably cool and exciting fight scenes. Even heavy hitters like “Gundam,” which deals with heavy themes of war crimes, genocide, and the psychological effect of war on children, have pretty badass robot action that leads to huge toy sales of said war machines. According to “Vinland Saga” author Makoto Yukimura, it is “when a manga becomes so violent the artist wants to quit writing, that is considered a success in our industry.”
Yukimura’s magnum opus “Vinland Saga” and its anime adaptation by Wit Studio and now Studio Mappa were this way first, giving audiences exhilarating Viking fight scenes and gory battles. But that changed by the time of the Slave Arc, which the anime series’ second season adapts. That arc turns the entire story on its head, showing the futility, cruelty,...

Heavy spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" follow.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is a satisfying, funny, and rather emotional movie that gives us something rare in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: an ending. This movie provides a definite end to this version of the team, a great backstory for Rocket that was years in the making, and the closest we've got to a "We3" adaptation.
Going into the release of the film, the big question on most people's minds was who would live and who would die. It didn't help that James Gunn made a big deal about this being his last "Guardians" movie, and outright said some characters would die, while some actors like Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldaña stated they were done with the characters after this film. The trailers even teased dramatic moments, like Nebula carrying a motionless Peter.

Throughout the years, killer robots have dominated the silver screen And other mediums such as comics, video games, novels, and even album covers. From Mechagodzilla and Gundam to more niche names like Cyrax and Fulgore, and pleasant androids like C-3Po and the Urkel Bot! Robots have entertained us, frightened us, and given us some of the best friggin’ action us human counterparts could ask for. But there is no doubt that the two most prolific robots that hardwired our imaginations are the unstoppable T-800 from the Terminator franchise portrayed by the greatest action hero of all, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the cybernetically-enhanced police officer Robocop played by the fantastic Peter Weller.
In 1984, director James Cameron became a household name with The Terminator, launching Schwarzenegger’s film career into the stratosphere. James Cameron claims the idea came to him from a dream of a metal skeleton emerging from fire while he was sick with a fever.

The second season premiere of "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury" followed the action-packed first season finale by returning to the status quo at Asticassia School of Technology. The next episode blew it up, killing characters and breaking Asticassia beyond repair. Now in this third episode, we leave Asticassia for the most part. Nika and Miorine appear, Shaddiq chats with his (kidnapped) guardian, but the heroine Suletta is totally absent. It's another big twist in a season that's leaned on shock and awe, catching the viewer's attention with the right hand to hide what's in the left. These sorts of magicians' tricks only work so long as the viewer is willing to suspend their sense of disbelief. Thankfully "The Witch From Mercury" is generous. The staff is very good at conditioning the audience, predicting what they want and then giving it to them when they least expect it or most dread it.

The impact and influence of entertainment have been shown to further spawn an epiphany for creativity in the minds of the audiences observing. However, the motivation for formulating a piece of fiction goes beyond just making movies and tv shows. Imagination equally thrives in countless ways, such as the various forms of literature. The comic book industry has seen many people inspired by numerous renditions of media, giving way to folks creating their own forms of storytelling through writing and artwork. Beyond that, with the world being so unique and diverse, many comic writers have taken the opportunity to implement aspects that give their stories more layers to them. In the case of the comic series “Primal Warrior Draco Azul,” we have a successful blend of vibrant spectacle with immersive worldbuilding.

"The Mandalorian" just tied up the loose ends of its third season with a grand battle to reclaim Mandalore, and it had everything you could want out of a big "Star Wars" battle: lightsabers, blasters going "pew-pew," spaceships crashing into enemy bases, bad guys falling into shafts, and much more.
But as cool as some of the moments were, the finale overall felt like it wasted one of the show's core characters — Grogu. After "The Mandalorian" all but brought an end to Grogu's story in season two, he's been on the sidelines for most of this season. Not that the foundling is just sitting idly by on his little floating cradle all season, of course, but his part in the story has been reduced to just the cute creature he was when we first met him.
This is why Grogu getting his own mecha suit in last week's episode was so exciting.

Star Wars has always pulled influences from many places, including old serials, "Dune," and several of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's films. Because of this, Star Wars is both a specific vision and also a world that is recognizable everywhere. In more recent years, anime has deeply impacted the franchise far, far away and taken it towards new heights.
Whether it's "The Clone Wars" or even "Star Wars: Visions," the franchise has looked towards Japanese anime for aesthetic inspiration. But it wasn't until this year that we finally got a canonical display of one of the biggest and most iconic aspects of anime: mecha suits.

"The Little Mermaid" saved Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1989. It earned rave reviews from critics like Roger Ebert, who wrote that "the magic of animation has been restored to us." It won an Academy Award and a Grammy for the hit song "Under the Sea." Best of all, the film popularized animated musicals; not just animated films with songs, but films with songs that expressed motivation and character as aptly as the animation did. Lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken, responsible for the off-Broadway legend "Little Shop of Horrors," brought their hard-won expertise to a project that was floundering on the rocks. The results didn't just set the standard for the Disney Renaissance; they set the standard for its competition. For the first time in many years, Disney took the lead as opposed to ceding ground to challengers like Don Bluth. Not every film in the coming years would be successful,...
