This year celebrates 25 years since the final year of the 1900’s. A year that brought about such classics as The Matrix, Fight Club, American Pie, and Office Space as well as my personal favorite movie of all time: Arlington Road. The year was so successful that 20 years later it would inspire a book titled Best Movie Year Ever.
With a vast cannon of films ranging from highly anticipated block busting prequels (Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace) to that years’ eventual Best Picture winner American Beauty and a movie that changed the meaning of twist endings forever (The Sixth Sense) 1999 truly was a year for the ages.
I will be honest, after compiling last weeks list for Best Movies from 1994 and now this list, I have to say 1994 was far more deserving of its own book! But that isn’t to say that 1999 doesn’t have a number of...

Roundtable Entertainment has announced that they’re teaming up with director Mark Pellington – whose credits include Arlington Road, The Mothman Prophecies, Henry Poole Is Here, The Last Word, The Severing, and Survive, among many other projects – for the adrenaline-fueled human trafficking revenge thriller Mom.
Scripted by Brent Jordan, Mom tells the compelling story of a single mother embarking on a daring cross-country rescue mission, piecing together clues in the search for her teenage daughter who has fallen victim to the horrors of human trafficking.
Casting Director Lisa Zagoria, who assembled the cast for the Best Picture winner Coda, will be handling the casting of this film as well.
Pellington had this to say about the project: “Mom is a fast-moving story of protection and revenge. The film explores the true price of violence and the cost of justice, when an ordinary mom is pushed to an extraordinary place. This is a muscular,...

The episode of Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie covering The Mothman Prophecies was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
“Mary Klein cannot be found by looking. You will see her in time.”
“Based on a true story” is a favorite of writers and Hollywood executives alike. It can be taken verbatim or tweaked and can live in many genres. When myth crosses over into real events, it can be difficult to discern what the focus of a property should be upon. The writer of The Mothman Prophecies was called and consulted about the book he wrote over 20 years after it was published, and he seems to really enjoy it. His account, at least in his eyes, is a very real and frightening story that happened to a people and its town...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we have the return of the great Mark Pellington! The filmmaker is back to talk about his new film Survive, now available on VOD. We also discuss his recent, experimental dance film The Severing (also on VOD). Plenty more is covered here, Pellington ever the open book to chat about the creative process, the business behind each project, and the motivation to work in every aspect of the film medium. Here’s a reminder that this is the guy who made Arlington Road and The Mothman Prophecies, some of the best music videos ever made, some of the weirdest, coolest stuff ever on MTV, and a slew of other interesting, powerful pieces of work.

“Pellington’s boldest and most audacious film to date, an unclassifiable dance movie that plays like a cross between Wim Wenders’ Pina and Saw…Pellington moves beyond the limitations of narrative to get at something primal and raw—but also ultimately transcendent and life affirming—that perfectly conveys the transformative effects of grief and loss.”

Like its Park City counterpart, the Slamdance Film Festival has pivoted to an all-virtual affair this year, but it will now get underway Jan. 27, one week after Sundance, its proudly DIY spirit intact. The 28th edition of Slamdance boasts 23 premieres — 13 world, six North American and four U.S. debuts — and sections such as Department of Anarchy and Experimental Shorts, along with Blockchain Fairy Tales, a collaborative storytelling experiment.
“On one hand you can say it’s bad and disappointing when we cannot gather in Park City, but we see the good — the opportunity to reenvision what a festival can be, what Slamdance can be,” says Peter Baxter, Slamdance president and co-founder. “Our new Slamdance Channel, which will host the festival this year, fits into the bigger picture of a decentralized media future.”
Buzzy titles include Clay Tatum’s comedy “The Civil Dead” and Kristen Abate and Steven Tanenbaum’s existential...

Film financier Peter Samuelson and showrunner-director Jonathan Prince have joined forces to launch PhilmCo, a production and distribution banner designed to produce socially-conscious movies and TV shows with a built-in philanthropic component.
Samuelson and Prince are working with private investors to fund the development of a range of projects that are about to be shopped to studio and network partners. The content backed by PhilmCo will focus on issues and causes that allow creative partners to build in calls to action to address the problems illustrated by the story.
Prince said issue-oriented content in the past has rarely taken the step of directly connecting audiences to charitable donations or social actions to capitalize on awareness. This will be a primary focus of PhilmCo which aims to knit together a network of appropriate nonprofit, charitable and philanthropic partners to help support each project and benefit.

What’s really disturbing about Arlington Road is how easily it could be translated into reality since let’s be honest, our government might make it clear that everything we do can and is sometimes being watched and recorded, but like any possible trap, there’s always a way out and there are always those that are watching those who watch. Someone will always come up with a way to beat the system, even if they have to use that system in order to do it. This is why this movie, as underrated as it is by so many, is inherently creepy and

February finally brings the long-awaited release of Golden Exits, but it’s not the only Alex Ross Perry film to be hitting theaters next month. The Queen of Earth director also penned the script for Nostalgia, the latest film from director Mark Pellington (The Mothman Prophecies, Arlington Road), and now the first trailer has landed.
Starring Jon Hamm, Catherine Keener, John Ortiz, Nick Offerman, Chris Marquette, James Le Gros with Bruce Dern and Ellen Burstyn, it tells a series of stories about memories and regret. It certainly looks more sentimental than Perry’s previous work and we’ll find out the first reactions soon as it premieres at Palm Springs International Film Festival this weekend.
See the trailer and poster below.
A mosaic of stories about love and loss, Nostalgia explores our relationships to the objects, artifacts, and memories that shape our lives.

The Academy Awards reminded actress/writer Jeanne Marie Spicuzza about what could be. After all, her screenplay “Breath of God” was a semi-finalist in the Academy sponsored Nicholl Fellowship, a prestigious competition that found sourced screenplays for films such as “Arlington Road” and Aqueelah and the Bea.” Having just finished shooting her second feature length film, “Night Rain”, in January, which aims for release later in 2017, Spicuzza is set to make “Breath of God” as a European co-production, eyeing a start date in 2018. For her Master’s degree in philosophy at one of the top two programs in the U.S., Spicuzza had spent seven years researching the life and work of Hildegard von Bingen, even traveling to Bingen, Germany, for that purpose, and made Hildegard,...

One of the trailers for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is the latest to ignite grumbles about just how much is given away in promos for movies.
This list looks at 25 films where the trailer has given away more than it really should in its promos - and it goes without saying that spoilers lie ahead for each of the movies. Don't read or click on individual entries of films you've not seen if you don't want to be spoiler sullied!
25. Jurassic World
Director Colin Trevorrow was amongst those who expressed disappointment at this one particular promo for Jurassic World. In it, we see Chris Pratt riding on his motorbike, alongside velcoraptors that surprisingly don't appear to be eating him. Presented out of context, the scene just looked a little daft. But...

The 50 Shades of Grey sequel is closing in on a director to oversee Christian and Anastasia's further big screen exploits.
House of Cards and Glengarry Glen Ross filmmaker James Foley is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Sam Taylor-Johnson on the erotic blockbuster sequel, 50 Shades Darker.
According to Deadline, Foley may also get signed up to direct the closing film in the trilogy 50 Shades Freed, and shoot both movies back-to-back.
Foley, who's also directed Halle Berry's Perfect Stranger, has emerged as the top choice for the job ahead of Mark Pellington (Arlington Road), Tanya Wexler (Hysteria) and Rebecca Thomas (Electrick Children).
50 Shades Darker will be written by Niall Leonard, the husband of series creator El James.
James is said to have clashed heatedly with Taylor-Johnson during the making of 50 Shades of Grey, leading to the director walking away from the follow-up.

James Foley looks set to direct the new Fifty Shades film, taking over from Sam Taylor-Johnson.
Well, help yourself to a few quid from the prize pot if you saw this one coming. Assuming there’s a few quid in there. Universal is keen to get up and running on Fifty Shades Of Grey follow-up Fifty Shades Of Darker early next year, but there’s the small matter of a new director to find.
Sam Taylor-Johnson, who helmed Fifty Shades Of Grey, opted out of the sequel, and all the pointers are in the direction of a not very happy working relationship with the book’s author, E L James. That notwithstanding, the studio has a working shortlist of three directors, and at the top – and apparently the frontrunner by distance – is James Foley.

The third season release of Major Crimes is hitting May 26th, and I’ve got your opportunity to win one of three copies of the DVD!
The show, a spin-off of The Closer, has been doing well since it premiered, and the third season was the #3 scripted drama on basic cable.
Moreover, despite not kicking off all that well, it’s a show that has grown into itself, and found a more solid base of existence. The quality has grown in many respects, and the cases were far more interesting in the third season.
Mary McDonnell seems more comfortable, due in large part to the writing giving her a broader base of character to work with.
If you aren’t caught up, now is the perfect chance to get ready for the fourth season.
Take a look at more info on the season, and enter to win your copy!

Spoilers for Gone Girl follow. Yes, I get the irony of that. Why do I need a spoiler warning when I’m about to argue that we’re currently enjoying an age without twists? Because I’ve been a ghost this whole time. But, seriously, that’s the kind of twist I want to examine for a moment. The Shyamalan Twist. The Turns-Out-It-Was-Man Twist. The kind of twist that makes you rethink everything that came before it. This is exactly the kind of plot twist that Gone Girl and a handful of other recent movies don’t have. That’s not a qualitatively good or bad thing, but it’s fascinating to see cinema toy — or in some cases move beyond — what has become an overly familiar formula. Executing a thrilling twist is near impossible (just ask Shyamalan, whose batting average has dropped over the years as a direct result of becoming known for twists), and it...

Our continuing look back at some of the biggest summers we've lived through takes us back 15 years to one of the best recent movie seasons overall. In honor of the 2014 summer movie season, Team HitFix will be delivering a mini-series of articles flashing back to key summers from years past. There will be one each month, diving into the marquee events of the era, their impact on the writer and their implications on today's multiplex culture. We continue today with a look back at the summer of 1999. It was the summer I became Moriarty. To be fair, I had been contributing to Ain't It Cool for a little while already by that point, and I had been slowly but surely embracing the potential of the website and the audience that I was reaching. I had already taken a few trips to Austin, including a memorable stay at the third Quentin Tarantino Film Festival,...

Though there are some spoilers sprinkled throughout this piece for some of the films, they are largely vague for readers who have not seen the films in question.
In his book Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America, journalist Rick Pearlstein posits that Nixon, one of history’s most reviled presidents, manipulated social trends, tense racial crises and even war to assume the office, and, perhaps inadvertently, created the way the Right and Left deal with each other in the present day. The scars of the seventies indeed still hang like a dark cloud over Washington, its internal systems ravaged by covert bugging operations and illegal payoffs. With Edward Snowden’s Nsa revelations and Wikileaks at the forefront today, America has once again regressed into paranoia, though nothing in contemporary cinema compares to the violent, bleak reactions filmmakers had to the Watergate scandal. The occasional modern conspiracy thriller,...

Disney just hired Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Ring, Arlington Road) to write the script for its upcoming live-action version of the 1941 animated classic "Dumbo." "Dumbo" tells the story of a baby circus elephant who is teased for his large ears. When his mother steps in to protect him and is locked up for it, he ends up on the road with a mouse as his companion. The mouse instills into Dumbo the idea that with the help of a magic feather, he can fly. The new take involves the adaptation of the original movie while adding a unique family story that parallels Dumbo's story. The studio believes that because of the current state of CG technology, a live-action movie featuring a flying elephant can be successful. Disney has turned several classic animated films into live-action movies, including "Maleficent" and "Alice in Wonderland." It's also working on a live-action remakes of "Cinderella,...

Maleficent has proven to be a roaring success for Disney, as it continues to turn classic fairy tales and animated movies into live action projects. The studio continues to strike gold too, with Maleficent following the hugely successful Alice In Wonderland and Oz: The Great And Powerful.
Disney already has live action movies of Cinderella, The Jungle Book and Beauty And The Beast in development. But it looks like it's now added Dumbo to its slate.
The Wrap reports that a live action Dumbo is set to be penned by Ehren Kruger for the studio. Kruger has previously penned Scream 3, Arlington Road and the last three Transformers movies.
Kruger will also produce, alongside Justin Springer. There's no word on a director or timescales yet.

So we've had Maleficent, Cinderella is dropping next year, and Jon Favreau is currently developing Jungle Book. Now, another Disney animated classic is getting the live action treatment, with the announcement of Dumbo. Unlike Maleficent, Dumbo is expected to be a straight re-telling of the classic tale of a baby elephant with oversized ears who learns to fly, with the massive cast of animals being brought to life by CGI. Screen writer Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Age of Extinction, Scream 3, The Ring, Arlington Road) has being brought on to write the script, which is said to have a "strong family component". Personally, there are alarm bells ringing for me. Kruger is a fine writer, but in recent years there has been a noticeable decline in quality in his work, with the latest Transformers, and its insufferable third act, being the latest example. via The Wrap...

When four 40-something college friends - Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven, Rob Lowe and Christian McKay - meet up for their annual reunion at California's Big Sur things start to spiral out of control. The exhilaration of cocaine-fuelled Porsche races in the desert gives way to self-doubt, self-pity, and worse as the trip takes ever darker turns. The guys might lose their cool but the alt-rock soundtrack never does as director Mark Pellington (Arlington Road, The Mothman Prophecies) takes a long, hard look at the mid-life crisis.

One of the most irritating things in life has to be hearing a spoiler about a movie or TV show. Even just finding out there's a twist in a film can be the worst, just ask Roy Trenneman.

The year 1999 was a significant year for film in many ways. Apart from being the year that George Lucas began his Star Wars prequels with The Phantom Menace, it also saw the release of The Blair Witch Project, a horror film which became one of the first to use the internet as a marketing tool, resulting in a massive hit. With The Wicker Man getting a 40th anniversary dust-off and re-release, it got me thinking again about how rare it is that a film (or indeed a film-maker) has the stones to really plumb the depths of despair in its finale. It of course goes without saying that plenty of films have dark and desperate moments, but since the general trend is towards the cathartic nature of upbeat endings and our perceived need to go out of the theatre on a high point, lots of the interim darkness is alleviated before the credits finally roll.
Take a film like Schindler’s List. It is hard to make a case for anything in recorded history being as dark and desperate as the Holocaust, yet the tale of rescue and redemption that sits at the core of the film becomes the prevailing emphasis at the end, as the surviving relatives of the...
