A sly dig at the 'juvenile delinquent' genre
Islandia30 September 2002
A deliciously sly dig at juvenile delinquent movies and gangster films. The delinquents in this film are senior citizens, and the responsible ones are their grandchildren. The seniors all behave as if they've seen too many American gangster movies, which is very funny in the context of Danish retirement homes. The title of the film translates as "The Vacuum-cleaner Gang", and is a reference to their inventive use of an ultra-silent portable vacuum cleaner as an instrument of crime.

'The Vacuum Cleaner Gang' is one of the most amusing crime comedies of all times!

Warning: Spoilers
A group of old, respectably looking men and women form a gang of very effective thieves using among other things a disguised vacuum cleaner to suck up cash while the bank cashier is looking away. Let me give just one sample of the film's light atmosphere. NB! As this gives away a couple of the jokes, do not read on if you intend to watch the film and want to save the jokes for that occasion: At one point a guest sees what he believes to be bitter marzipan (wich he loves) and eats some of it without asking permission. Unfortunately it is really a plastic explosive, and one of the gang members reports the event to the woman in charge of the explosives (played by the divine Clara Pontoppidan). She - like a nice housewife - only replies, "Oh it doesn't matter, there's plenty of it!". The terrified guest leaves with the intention of going to a doctor, but shortly after a big explosion is heard from outside, and the gang members all take off their hats - "What a pity, he was such a nice man".
