Obnoxious flatmates Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston and Kerry Fox get way more than they bargained for with the arrival of enigmatic Keith Allen and a suitcase full of cash
Rereleased for its 30th anniversary, the macabre black-comic crime caper is from screenwriter John Hodge with Danny Boyle making his feature-directing debut, giving us a hint of the turbocharged showmanship that always marked his style and which he was to crank up another notch a few years later with the zeitgeisty 90s hit Trainspotting. Shallow Grave is a bizarre Edinburgh noir, centring on cover-ups, disloyalty and incompetent corpse-management in the approximate spirit of Ealing, with touches of Hitchcock’s The Trouble With Harry and Orton’s Entertaining Mr Sloane. It’s also a kind of 90s young person flatshare entertainment, but closer to the BBC’s This Life than Friends.

The movie’s pacing plays a major part in its eventual perception by the audience. It gives the filmmakers the freedom of choice whether to stick to the usual narration or to speed up or, on the contrary, slow down the plot progression to create a special impression and to make their movies memorable.
We can recall the fast-paced Trainspotting (1996) or Fight Club (1999), with both of them becoming cultish features, definitive for the whole generation. However, there is a lesser-known 1990’s movie that is also quick to start and to throw a viewer into the heat of its events, appearing to be a brilliant must-watch.
Its plot revolves around the young Lola, who receives a devastating phone call from her boyfriend Manni. It turns out that he lost 100,000 Deutschmarks that he was sent to bring to his gangster boss, and he begs Lola to somehow find the necessary amount of...

As his dazzling debut, Shallow Grave, gets a 30th anniversary rerelease, here’s to an extraordinary career that ranges from Trainspotting to Slumdog Millionaire and that unforgettable London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony
Lancashire-born film-maker Danny Boyle holds a special place in the nation’s heart, having been responsible for not one but three defining moments in our recent pop-culture history. In 1996, his daringly inventive adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting changed the face of young British cinema, with star-making performances from the likes of Ewan McGregor, Kelly Macdonald and Robert Carlyle, and a magpie soundtrack that out-hipped Pulp Fiction. I was co-hosting Radio 1’s film programme when Trainspotting hit UK cinemas, and Mary Anne Hobbs and I immediately ditched our opening station jingles in favour of the thumping drum intro to Lust for Life, which remained the show’s theme tune in perpetuity.

Having won a BAFTA (and landed an Oscar nomination) for her role as Colin Farrell’s kind-hearted but cynical — and distinctly less donkey-friendly — sister in Martin McDonagh’s darkly comic “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Kerry Condon is back in her native Ireland for her next film role.
Set in the height of the Troubles in the mid-1970s, Robert Lorenz’s Irish Western “In the Land of Saints and Sinners,” which launches on Netflix Friday, sees the actress ditch all niceties to play a hard-nosed, mean-as-hell, extremely potty-mouthed and very violent Ira gang leader trying to lie low in rural Donegal following a deadly pub bombing. But it’s not long before she’s up against Liam Neeson, whose demeanor as a quiet widow and secondhand book dealer masks a secret identity as a local hitman for Colm Meaney’s village mobster. For several years now, Quentin Tarantino has been adamant that he plans to make a single 10th and final movie — which will no longer be The Movie Critic. Some of his fans were relieved when this news broke yesterday. The Movie Critic originally sounded like a nostalgic character study (“more epilogue-y,” as Tarantino once put it), while his fans particularly love the director’s more pulply, genre-driven fair. The result would have almost certainly been great. But would it have been great enough to be Tarantino’s last film?
More details about this decision are likely still to come. Still, one wonders: Would Tarantino have abandoned the movie if there wasn’t so much riding on it? His many statements about quitting film directing have suggested he’s extremely focused on protecting his legacy, which seems like a downright masochistic way of putting an enormous amount pressure on yourself. The couple joined the cast during season 3 of Noah Hawley’s series and played each other’s romantic interests. They first met on the set of the show in 2017.
Riley Stearns was Winstead’s ex-husband at the time, while McGregor was still married to Eve Mavrakis. The Fargo costars began dating shortly after their respective marriages ended. Exclusive: This year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) will unspool in close collaboration with Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Scottish capital’s historic performing arts event, under a new expansive partnership confirmed today by the two organizations.
As part of the deal, Edinburgh’s film programme will open in close proximity to wider Fringe events, including theatre, music, and comedy performances, using new venues across the city, including non-traditional cinema spaces in Summerhall and at the heart of the Fringe footprint.
This year, the Picturehouse-run Cameo Cinema on Home Street will be the film festival’s cinema hub. The century-old cinema is one of the original Eiff venues and has hosted some of the festival’s most seminal moments, including a 1953 lecture by Orson Welles.
Also expanding are the Eiff film strands. From this year, Eiff will mount a strand of Out of Competition films, which management said will...

It is easy to feel protective of Shirley Henderson on this gloomy winter afternoon. Is she warm enough? Shallow Grave and Trainspotting, from Danny Boyle, will both be back on UK cinema screens in May 2024.
Danny Boyle’s two breakthrough movies – Shallow Grave and Trainspotting – are getting UK re-releases, we’ve discovered. Both of them will be back on UK cinema screens in May of this very year.
The strike actions of 2023 have presented cinemas with a surprisingly sparse collection of films to show in 2024, as you may have noticed. That, though, is leaving lots of gaps for independent movies and re-releases to get some very welcome screen space. Park Circus, a company that’s been bringing lots of older films back to cinemas, has a couple more lined up. This time, those aforementioned two features from Danny Boyle.

While medical dramas have long been a favorite staple on German TV, a new series helmed by Alex Schaad, director of the award-winning fantasy romance “Skin Deep,” and penned by British writer Samuel Jefferson looks set to give the genre a bold, modern take.

Cillian Murphy revealed that when he landed his breakthrough role in “28 Days Later,” the actor didn’t consider it a zombie movie. Murphy, a first-time Oscar nominee for his work in “Oppenheimer,” discussed the 2002 hit film at a taping of SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Conversations program. In the nearly 90-minute conversation, recorded in December, Murphy talks about his lengthy career on stage and screen. That includes working with director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland on the film, in which he plays a man who wakes from a coma 28 days after a rage-inducing virus has caused society to break down.
“I wasn’t too aware we were making a zombie movie, to be honest with you,” Murphy noted, adding he hadn’t seen any of George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” series. “It was right around the time Sars happened and there was all this ‘air rage’ stuff going on.

A fresh set of actors are about to be enrolled in what the film series cast cheekily nicknamed ‘the Harry Potter Pension plan’. US streamer Max’s plan to re-adapt the Potter books into a TV show running for 10 consecutive years and starting in 2025/6 should keep the lucky new cast in greasepaint and copies of The Stage indefinitely.
But who will they be? Lead characters Harry, Ron and Hermione will almost certainly be played by unknowns, but the Hogwarts ensemble – Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall, Hagrid and co. – will be picked from the current crop of British acting talent, just like their counterparts were over two decades ago. Who working today could follow in the footsteps of Sir Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane and the rest?
While it’s too early for any solid cast news, there’s no harm in a bit of dream-casting at this point,...

The recently announced followup will be the first of two films that continue the 2002 story – let’s hope it can avoid Hollywood cliches
Perhaps the most intriguing thing about the news that Danny Boyle, Alex Garland and Cillian Murphy are to reunite on a long awaited threequel to the classic new wave zombie horror 28 Days Later, is that none of the above really need a career hike. When film-makers and movie stars return to the source for a belated follow-up, there is often a distinct whiff of greatest hits tour about it. Let’s get the old band back together for one last dip into the coffers before retirement. Who doesn’t need a second beach house in Malibu to hang out in when the glory days are over?

Ewan McGregor was “very reluctant” to play Obi Wan-Kenobi in “Star Wars,” he admitted.
“It wasn’t a done deal for me. I didn’t think it was at all who I was. I believed, at that point, I was a Danny Boyle actor. ‘The Beach’ was more important and I meant it, it wasn’t flippant. I did ask a lot of people for advice.”
“I am happy that I am this character for a lot of people, but when these films came out, they were so disliked. That was hard. The first one was panned and we still had to make another two! It was weird to be in a film that was hammered.”
He enjoyed making ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi,” though.
“I would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet. There is a lot going on at Disney.”

Bursting with unruly energy that practically escapes the confines of the screen, “Kneecap” is a riotous, drug-laced triumph in the name of freedom that bridges political substance and crowd-pleasing entertainment. The three members of the eponymous Irish rap group — Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, and JJ Ó Dochartaigh — play themselves in this liberally fictionalized reimagining of their origin story set in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Cornerstone to the trio’s artistic ethos is the use of the Irish language (sometimes referred to as Irish Gaelic), to which writer-director Rich Peppiatt (a Brit) remains faithful. The island’s ancient native tongue — once banned by the British and only recognized as an official language in the U.K. in 2022 — is intrinsically tied to the identity of the colonized Irish people, often seen as an emblem of their enduring culture and defiance against British imperialism.

There’s a fascinating Instagram account that digs up paparazzi shots of stars attending premieres and film events in the 1990s. The main attraction is the outlandish fashion, but also the randomness of the guest list and the questions the images throw up: why were Angela Lansbury and John Oates invited to the Untouchables premiere in 1987? Did Sidney Poitier really enjoy Predator 2? Why did Richard Harris decide to bring his dog to the 1993 Independent Film awards?
One that caught my eye recently was the premiere of Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting in New York. Metallica are there, looking wild-eyed and inebriated, as is a smouldering Ray Liotta. An incredibly young-looking trio of Jonny Lee Miller, Boyle and Ewen Bremner attempt to fit in.

Home theatre nerd that I am, I do love it when the Criterion Collection calls in its old laserdisc releases and puts them out in the modern label. Danny Boyle's 1996 culture bomb, Trainspotting, was immediately ported to the Collection as one of those unwieldy silver platters, back in 1997; now, twenty-seven years later (!), it re-joins the group as spine #1204. For one thing, it's a chance to get some of that archival material back -- not only is the original laserdisc commentary track included here, but so are the wild takes of Ewan McGregor recording the commentary's introduction, from back in the days when such tracks were novel enough to require them! Nostalgia is a big part of the overall draw here, for...

Of the many terribly interesting things touched on in Danny Boyle’s smart and skillful adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s 1993 debut novel, Trainspotting, it’s most tempting to contemplate facets that are only mildly developed. There is, for instance, the pointed, oddly chilling, and deeply funny monologue that Renton (Ewan McGregor), the closest thing that the audience is given to a hero here, delivers in opposition to his straight-arrow friend’s buoyant Scottish nationalism. As Renton barks at Tommy (Kevin McKidd), personal despondency is connected directly to lack of a unique cultural identity, which Renton is quick to see as a reflection of Scotland’s muddled ties to the United Kingdom.
The whole spiel doesn’t quite account for the astounding amount of heroin that Renton and his cronies pump into their corroded veins, attained through various burglaries and scams, but coupled with the dour, decrepit environs of Glasgow and...

“Kneecap” is the delightfully spiky story of an Irish-language hip hop act’s unlikely rise to fame. But it would be a lot better if it knew what to do with Michael Fassbender.
Despite its best efforts not to be, “Kneecap” is a film about conflict. The opening narration tells us that every film about Belfast is the same — cue grainy archive footage of cars exploding. This one, rapper and protagonist Naoise Ó Cairealláin says, will be different. In a “You Might Be Wondering How I Got Here”-style voiceover, he describes his baptism in a remote forest used by Catholics to practice their religion after it was banned in the Tudor conquest of Ireland. But his family happened upon an Ira training spot, and the light that symbolised Naoise’s entry to the family of God was actually a British chopper. As the priest, the baby, and his mother...

The Oscar-winning director and the 53-year-old filmmaker teamed up to helm and write the 2002 horror flick respectively, and while they didn't direct or pen the script for the 2007 follow-up '28 Weeks Later', the pair are set to join forces again for a new zombie thriller. Ewan McGregor is set to receive the Honorary Dragon Award at this year’s Göteborg Film Festival in Sweden.
The “Star Wars” and “Trainspotting” star will attend the festival to collect the honor and participate in an Actors Talk. He will also be present at the Nordic premiere of his latest film, Niclas Larsson’s “Mother, Couch,” and a retrospective of his most notable films will be featured at the festival.
“Ewan McGregor is an androgynous symbol of the Cool Britannia era, a romantic icon for the millennial generation and a saber-swinging franchise holder in the pop-cultural center of the galaxy. But above all, he is an incredibly skilled artist,” Göteborg Film Festival artistic director Jonas Holmberg said in a statement. “By mastering stylized extravagance, literary precision and nuanced realism with the same relaxed self-evidence, Ewan McGregor has shown that he is one of the truly great actors of our time.

In a previous piece for Gold Derby, I referenced how all but one Best Picture Oscar winner since 2008 came from filmmakers who had never directed a Best Picture nominee before. The only exception is Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s “Birdman” in 2014; his prior Best Picture bid was for “Babel” back in 2006. Let’s dig into the last 15 years of winners, shall we?
SEEOscars alert: Watch out for ‘Barbie’ scene-stealers America Ferrera and Rhea Perlman
In 2008 “Slumdog Millionaire” was the juggernaut of the film awards season, winning eight Oscars, which is still more than any film since then. It was directed by Danny Boyle, who at the time only made one other Oscar nominated film, 1996’s “Trainspotting,” which was recognized with a nom for Best Adapted Screenplay.
In 2009 the race famously came down to two films from directors who were previously married: James Cameron‘s “Avatar” and Kathryn Bigelow‘s “The Hurt Locker.

The power of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” stems from its restraint: a piano’s torch song, nearly Sinatra-like; the singer’s nasal-mush baritone, divinely. Strings with schmaltz and a gentle tension at the close: “you’re going to reap just what you sow.” Especially after its inclusion in Trainspotting, critics have read it as an ode to the rapture-wash of heroin as much as the accounting of a love affair. Obtuse even at his most generous, Reed denied the double-meaning: “That’s a lovely song,” he told NME in 1973. “A description of a very straightforward affair.” Of course it’s both; the regular is always sublime, and vice-versa.
Reed’s song once again finds itself informing the moving image, lending sentiment and name to Wim Wenders’ newest narrative feature, Perfect Days. With Neon releasing the film in December, a trailer is now available.

Warning: contains plot spoilers for Shetland series eight, episode two.
The Shetland islands only have a population of 22,000 – roughly a tenth of the number of people who go to Glastonbury Festival – so up there, you can expect to run into the same faces time and again. It’s no different for Scottish actors on TV. There are only a finite number, and in a long-running series like BBC One’s Shetland, sometimes cast-members get recycled from one role to another.
That’s what happened with Ann Louise Ross, the actor who plays farmer and widower Agnes Moffat in Shetland series eight. We first met Agnes in episode one, when (temporary Di) Tosh is investigating a series of livestock murders. Several of Agnes’ sheep have been found with their throats cut and daubed in their blood with a mysterious symbol.

Is January too early for the year’s best boxset? Criterion will begin their 2024 with a Chantal Akerman collection spanning her nascent days to 1978’s Rendezvous with Anna, plus––maybe most enticing of all––her unfinished, never-seen 1973 project Hanging Out Yonkers.
On the 4K side, the Apu Trilogy and Blood Simple will receive upgrades as Trainspotting and Lone Star enter the collection with 2,160 pixels. Meanwhile, Dee Rees’ Mudbound is freed from the Netflix confines in a new Blu-ray edition.
