Years & Years has officially been disbanded as Olly Alexander steps away from being the synth-pop project’s sole remaining member. During a recent performance under his own name at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, the singer and songwriter told the audience: “I used to be in Years & Years, I used to be Years & Years, and now I’m just me.”
In 2021, Alexander took over Years & Years as a solo act ahead of the project’s third album, Night Call. The shift marked the departure of founding...

Simone Hicks plans to “dominate this season” when All American: Homecoming returns — but fresh footage from the upcoming episodes has us thinking the season might dominate her.
In the exclusive Season 3 trailer embedded above, Simone’s renewed determination on the tennis court quickly gives way to a potential injury (“Something’s off with my swing,” she worries aloud) and a seemingly formidable opponent from another university. Plus, Simone’s personal life seems similarly complicated: Although we briefly see her in bed with (presumably) one of her two suitors from last season’s cliffhanger, the conversation she’s having via voiceover — “I did what you asked.

“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).
On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg keep it simple with the PG-13 horror movie Tarot. Instead of a cold open to hook audiences on the horror, Tarot launches straight into introducing the group of seven friends partaking in a party weekend at an isolated manor.
It’s there that they dabble with things they shouldn’t, setting in motion a curse that will pick them off one by one, slasher style. With an equal group of monsters to match, Tarot has the makings of a breezy gateway horror movie perfect for sleepovers, though it’s undermined by surface-level characters and storytelling.
The moment the beer runs dry, forcing the friends to seek entertainment elsewhere, birthday girl Elise (Larsen Thompson) insists that Haley (Harriet Slater) puts her tarot knowledge to good use when they find a mysterious deck within the house. Haley warns that it’s extremely bad luck to borrow...

Ginger Zee visited Philadelphia on assignment and was greeted with an unexpected welcoming gift.
The Good Morning America fan-favorite was in The City of Brotherly Love this week for the Rise and Shine tour.
The ABC News Chief Meteorologist even filmed from the most iconic spot in Philly, too – the Philadelphia Museum of Art stairs, where Sylvester Stallone ran up the steps in his famous scene in the movie Rocky.
Ginger shared photos taken alongside ABC 6 meteorologist and traffic anchor Karen Rogers from atop the steps as they posed with a gift from the Philly Pretzel Factory.
The soft pretzel chain went to great lengths to concoct a unique pretzel in Ginger’s likeness.
Ginger and Karen posed for a couple of snaps with the pretzel, and in the caption, Ginger wrote, “What do we think, do I look good as a Philadelphia pretzel?”

The ongoing Motörhead live recording series, The Löst Tapes, is being collected on a new eight-disc CD box set arriving February 23rd. In addition, a fifth volume in the series, Live at Donington Download Fest ’08, has been announced as part the box set and as a standalone vinyl release.
The Motörhead camp launched The Löst Tapes series in 2021, restoring previously unreleased Motörhead concert recordings sourced from cassette tapes discovered in the archives of the late Lemmy Kilmister.
“[Cassettes] were a standard part of every tour … Motörhead were certainly no exception, recording show after show,” read the press release for the box set. “They contain gold, pure aural gold, and had for many years sat hundreds of feet underground in a small cave Lemmy owned, guarded by small, hairy centurions in Roman armor with small spears and bad attitudes. Motörhead‘s 1983 album Another Perfect Day is receiving an expanded 40th anniversary reissue including rarities, demos, and a period-specific concert recording. “Climber,” the original demo for the album track “Shine,” can be heard now ahead of the collection’s November 3rd release date.
Another Perfect Day is somewhat of an outlier in the Motörhead canon in that it’s the band’s only album to feature ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian “Robbo” Robertson, who took over for Fast Eddie Clarke in 1982.
With the addition of Robertson, Motörhead took a more “musical” approach — in Lemmy Kilmister’s words — to Another Perfect Day. Rather than relying on flat-out speed and aggression as they had with Clarke, Lemmy and company hunkered down in the studio and crafted some of the most melodic and “produced” material to ever don the Motörhead name.
Robertson’s effects-laden guitar overdubs are the most striking difference between Another Perfect...

Baroness have unveiled a new song from their upcoming album, Stone. The track “Shine” is the third tune released from the LP in advance of its September 15th release.
“Shine” starts out with a quiet minute-long instrumental intro before singer-guitarists John Baizley and Gina Gleason kick the song into high gear with their dueling vocals and mighty riffs, as bassist Nick Jost and drummer Sebastian Thomson provide a powerful rhythm section. The six-and-a-half minute track takes the listener on a thrilling journey that’s both heavy and melodic.
The new tune marks the final preview song released ahead of Stone‘s arrival. It follows previous singles “Last Word” and “Beneath the Rose.”
Meanwhile, Baroness have beefed up the support acts for their already-stacked fall North American tour (tickets available here). Hoaxed, Destiny Bond, Spotlights, and Zorn join previously announced openers Jesus Piece, Portrayal of Guilt, Primitive Man, Ken Mode, Wayfarer,...

A version of this story about Greg Philinganes and Joni Mitchell first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Of the many musical-tribute specials that aired during the past Emmy season, few had the emotional clout of PBS’ “Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song: Joni Mitchell.” For starters, it featured a stellar array of musicians paying tribute to the pioneering singer-songwriter — among them Annie Lennox, Cyndi Lauper, Angelique Kidjo, James Taylor, Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, Brandi Carlile and Marcus Mumford performing songs that included “Both Sides Now,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Blue,” “Carey” and “Shine.”
But at the end of the night, it also included the 79-year-old Mitchell herself, eight years after a brain aneurysm that forced her to relearn how to walk and sing, performing an exquisite version of George Gershwin’s “Summertime” in a voice far different...

Joni Mitchell has shared her new live album At Newport, commemorating her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival.
Co-produced by Mitchell along with fellow Newport performer Brandi Carlile, the album features 12 live recordings. Throughout the performance, Mitchell and Carlile were accompanied by artists including Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. The setlist includes Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.”
Not only was Mitchell’s Newport set her first live performance in over 20 years, but it also marked a rare public appearance since she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015. Mitchell’s longtime friend, filmmaker Cameron Crowe, wrote about the magic of her return in the live album’s liner notes. (You can get the physical version of the album here.)

The past two years have shown that we all still really love Joni Mitchell. The legendary singer-songwriter made headlines last year when she appeared at the Newport Folk Festival completely by surprise. Mitchell was brought by Brandi Carlile, who has been a longtime fan, and performed multiple songs with her and other artists. The news broke quickly, and many were excited that Mitchell had decided to perform again after more than 20 years without giving a full concert. Earlier in 2022, Mitchell had also been honored with the Grammy Person of the Year Award, honoring her legacy. And now, in 2023, Mitchell is back with two major events: she had a headlining concert back in June, and she’s got a new live album of her Newport session coming to us this month. And trust, you should probably keep an eye out for it.

Banijay has taken full control of Endemol Shine India.
The move sees the Big Brother and MasterChef indie giant buying out CA Media’s 49% shareholding in Endemol Shine India for an undisclosed amount.
Banijay Asia CEO Deepak Dhar takes on the same role at Endemol Shine India, with the fate of former Chief Exec Rishi Negi not immediately clear at press time. Banijay Asia and Endemol Shine India will effectively become much closer and sit alongside each other under Dhar’s purview.
Dhar previously led Endemol’s Indian business between 2005 and 2018, before becoming the founder of Banijay Asia as a joint venture with Banijay. He now oversees the wider group’s content strategies, partnerships, new business and alliances. CA Media had owned 49% of Endemol Shine India since 2012.
According to Banijay, Dhar will “finesse the structure” of Banijay in Asia in coming weeks and create new group-wide roles and dedicated creative positions at the two labels.

Pink Floyd is best known as the band whose Dark Side of the Moon broke all records as the longest charting album in rock music history. Dozens of their songs are classic rock staples, the feature length film of their rock opera The Wall is a cult classic, and their sound is as instantly recognizable as their enigmatic back story. Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd is co-directed by Roddy Bogawa, the filmmaker behind Taken by Storm: The Art of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis, and Storm Thorgerson, a Pink Floyd intimate who started the graphic arts team which illustrated the band’s most iconic album covers. But the band’s founder and guiding light, Syd Barrett, dimmed in the glare of the spotlight, leaving the group after their second album, long before they achieved the stratospheric success their later work would bring. The...

Geoffrey Rush is one of the rare few who have achieved the triple crown of acting, meaning he has received an Emmy, Oscar and Tony Award (all three major acting awards) for his work (he refers to it as the Toe while waiting on his Egot).
Rush was an acclaimed actor in his native Australia for nearly two decades before the film “Shine” made him a known commodity in the rest of the world. He was 45 years old when suddenly his whole career changed and he was being considered for major roles in various mediums. That film about a pianist dealing with scars from his childhood won Rush the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award for Best Actor. Those awards and acclaim launched him into a highly successful international career. He has since earned even more Oscar nominations, with two as Best Supporting Actor for “Shakespeare in Love” and...

As the English summer settles into its brief annual pomp, so too arrives Greatest Days, the “official Take That musical”, adapted by Tim Frith from his own play and directed with a steady hand by Coky Giedroyc, and as wholesome, heady summer parties go you could do far worse. What could have been a jukebox retreade of some pop fluff here becomes a vibrant celebration of fandom’s sheer emotional transport. It’s very funny, very British, a little weird and extremely satisfying.
Aisling Bea is great as Rachel, a forty-something nurse who wins a golden ticket of sorts: a chance to see her teenage obsession, a nameless boyband, perform live in Athens. It sets in motion a reconnection with her old friends and themes, long since gone their separate ways since their time as screaming fans fantasising about life outside the seaside town of Clitheroe and living vicariously through some proper pop bangers.

Joni Mitchell staged her first publicly-announced concert in two decades at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington on Saturday.
The 79-year-old singer-songwriter initially made her return to the stage in August 2022 during a surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival. She subsequently announced a standalone headlining show as part of Brandi Carlile’s three-night concert event “Echoes Through the Canyon.”
With the assistance of Carlile and a bevy of guest musicians, Mitchell presented a 24-song performance that featured some of her most enduring hits. She kicked off the show with “Big Yellow Taxi” from Ladies of the Canyon. Marcus Mumford accompanied her on “Come in From the Cold,” and Blake Mills sat it on “Amelia.”

Since making his screen debut at age eight opposite his father, Lloyd Bridges, on TV’s “Sea Hunt,” Jeff Bridges has enjoyed an acting career that now spans a whopping 65 years. His resume mainly consists of film roles, but he has occasionally ventured back to the small screen, most recently as the star of “The Old Man.” Having already picked up Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his performance on the FX series, he is naturally one of the strongest contenders for this year’s Best Drama Actor Emmy. If his likely bid results in a victory, the Best Actor Oscar winner will join a distinguished group of leading men who were lauded by the film and then TV academies.

Joni Mitchell has officially announced At Newport, a live album immortalizing her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival. The project arrives on streaming services, CD, and 2xLP on July 28th.
Mitchell’s first live performance in 20 years came during Brandi Carlile’s set at the festival, so it’s only fair that Carlile would co-produce the live album with Mitchell herself. Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes also performed with the artists during the set, which featured Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.” Mitchell even performed a solo instrumental version of “Just Like This Train” on guitar.
At Newport also features liner notes from Cameron Crowe, who contextualizes Mitchell’s set — which followed a brain aneurysm she suffered in 2015 — with the earnest prose we’ve come...

The vibe surrounding Joni Mitchell being bestowed with the Gershwin Prize in Washington, D.C. earlier this month — as seen in a new PBS special — couldn’t have been more harmonious, from all accounts. And that’s a good thing, because under less loving circumstances, there could have been a turf war over who would get to sing “Both Sides Now,” the song that was Mitchell’s first hit in 1967 and might still stand as her signature song, if someone had to pick one with a gun to their head.
The victor, in this quiet, bloodless battle: the inimitable Annie Lennox, who performed at the tribute to Mitchell just months after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Eurythmics.

When Joni Mitchell finally took the stage near the end of an all-star tribute concert honouring her as this year’s recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, she opted to perform a cover rather than one of her own songs.
The 79-year-old music legend, who is the first Canadian and only the third woman to be honoured with the accolade, leaned against the piano Wednesday as she crooned a sultry version of “Summertime”, the popular tune from George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess”, an appropriate choice since the award was named after the composer.
But she wasn’t done. The evening’s other performers came to the stage and surrounded Mitchell as she launched into one of her more popular tunes, “The Circle Game”. Graham Nash, James Taylor, Ledisi, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Mumford, Brandi Carlile and others brought the crowd to their feet...

When he began working on his sophomore documentary feature, “Iron Butterflies,” in 2019, Ukrainian filmmaker Roman Liubyi said he was “making the film as a warning, before the Third World War.”
The film, which world premiered at Sundance, follows the Russian disinformation campaign surrounding the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 in Ukraine in 2014, a tragedy that was determined by a Dutch court in Nov. 2022 to have been caused by a missile supplied by the Russian military to separatists in Eastern Ukraine.
Many Ukrainians thought the tragic event, which killed 289 civilian passengers and crew, would serve as a wake-up call to Europe and the U.S., which had largely turned a blind eye to Russia’s meddling in the region, said the director. But the years dragged on and the long-running conflict in Donbas retreated from the headlines — until an increasingly emboldened Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale assault on Ukraine last year.

Two decades after he initially became a Screen Actors Guild Award nominee and 13 years after he won Best Film Actor for “Crazy Heart,” Jeff Bridges has received his first television acting notice from the organization. This Best TV Drama Actor recognition comes for his work on FX’s “The Old Man,” which constitutes the first regular small screen role of his 65-year career. If he succeeds on this bid, he will be only the sixth man to win individual SAG Awards for both film and TV performances.
Aside from his win, Bridges’ SAG Awards resume consists of four film nominations for “The Contender” (supporting), “Seabiscuit” (ensemble), “True Grit” (lead) and “Hell or High Water” (supporting). His challengers in this year’s TV drama actor contest are all, unlike him, also nominated in the corresponding ensemble category. Although his standing has been threatened in recent years by Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”), Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”), and Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), the record remains intact nearly three decades later. This year, however, he could finally be knocked down a spot on the list if Austin Butler (31) succeeds on his freshman solo bid for “Elvis.”
Butler is part of only the seventh Best Actor lineup in SAG Awards history to exclusively consist of newcomers to the category. He does have one Best Film Ensemble nomination under his belt, as do two of his competitors: Brendan Fraser and Bill Nighy. Fraser, who triumphed alongside his “Crash” cast mates, is currently nominated for “The Whale,” while Nighy’s first...

By amassing hundreds of film and TV credits over the past seven decades, James Hong has cemented himself as an indelible figure in the history of screen entertainment. Having just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last May, the 93-year-old is now reaping the benefits of taking on one of his most high-profile roles yet in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” His inclusion in the movie’s ensemble is expected to lead to his first Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, which would make him the oldest film performer ever recognized by the organization.
Hong appears in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” as Gong Gong, the irascible father of Michelle Yeoh’s lead character, Evelyn Wang. He, Yeoh, and Stephanie Hsu share a connection in that they have all voiced characters in the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise. Also included among Hong’s potential fellow nominees for Best Film Ensemble are Ke Huy Quan,...

Angus “Drummie Zeb” Gaye, who sang and played drums on “Don’t Turn Around,” “Shine” and other hits for the UK reggae band Aswad, died September 2. He was 62.
The band announced his death on its Instagram page but did not provide details. “It is with deepest regret and profound loss that we have to announce the passing of our brother Angus ‘Drummie’ Gaye,” the post reads (see it here). “Drummie was much loved and respected by both family, friends and peers alike. [He] has left us to join our ancestors and leaves a huge void both personally and professionally.”
Gaye and his bandmates Tony Robinson and Brinsley Dan Forde met at Holland Park School in London and released a number of singles that dented the UK chart before scoring big with “Don’t Turn Around” in 1988 (see the video below). The jaunty track penned by Albert Hammond and Diane Warren hit No.

Brittany Aldean, the wife of country singer Jason Aldean, has turned the controversy over her recent transphobic remarks into new t-shirts that incorporate references to Barbie and some favored right-wing slogans.
On Instagram Wednesday, Aug. 31, Aldean and her sister-in-law, Kasi Wicks — the sister of Jason Aldean and the wife of country singer Chuck Wicks — modeled the shirts, which read “Don’t Tread on Our Kids” in a bright pink Barbie-inspired font. Another completes the Gadsden flag reference of the slogan with an image of a coiled snake. (The flag dates...
