Horace Ové’s masterpiece “Pressure” is getting the spotlight treatment courtesy of Janus Films and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Bam).
“Pressure” will screen for two weeks as part of the museum’s ode to Black British cinema. The program, titled “Uncharted Territories: Black Britain on Film, 1963-1986” will take place from May 3 through 7, leading up to the new 4K restoration of “Pressure,” widely regarded as the first Black British narrative feature film.
“Uncharted Territories” features rarely screened work from filmmakers of African and Caribbean heritage based in Britain. The series includes “Burning an Illusion,” directed by Menelik Shabazz (1981), John Akomfrah’s “Handsworth Songs” (1986), “Territories” directed by Isaac Julien (1984), and more. The festival is programmed by Ashley Clark.
Screenings of “Pressure” begin May 10 and will continue through May 23. Herbert Norville, Oscar James, and Frank Singuineau star in the feature that follows a London-born teen (Norville), who is the son of Trinidadian parents.

Jada Smith has endured a rough phase of her life growing up. Her recent memoir Worthy, released last October, is the reminiscence of her that phase of life when she had to sell drugs in her teens. The actor has been vocal about the recognition of Black artists on global platforms.

While speaking with NPR, the Girls Trip actor meticulously discussed Black Gen X women celebrities, and her stance on this matter is prevalent in movies like A Different World, Jason’s Lyric, Menace II Society, and Set It Off. Kevin Hart has a very lucrative proposition for you. The multi-hyphenate comedy star is in the market for a few recruits. Anyone interested in stealing about 500 million dollars’ worth of gold? No pressure.
In the new film from director F. Gary Gray, a band of expert criminals is recruited to prevent a terrorist attack by doing what they do best — robbing the rich. It’s a simple Lift, nothing complicated. Other than the fact that the heist will take place on a plane in mid-flight. Call it some unexpected turbulence.
For Hart, Lift was an opportunity to stretch his wings (pun intended) — it’s a more dramatic role than the comedy superstar is typically known for. “Taking on the role of an action hero and heist boss like Cyrus has been a non-stop thrill...

Lift’s Cyrus Whitaker (Kevin Hart) is a master of the heist, a globe-trotting rapscallion who steals from the rich and gives to, well, other rapscallions. Director F. Gary Gray knows something about the subject. Over the course of his decades in show business, the Friday filmmaker has now made three heist films. In the ’90s landmark Set It Off, the target is banks in Los Angeles;in 2003’s slick remake The Italian Job, the loot is in Venice. And now there’s Lift, which takes robbery to a whole new level — 40,000 feet up in the air, to be exact.
“Since Set It Off and The Italian Job were made, criminal and law enforcement technology has improved significantly,” Gray tells Tudum. “In contrast to my earlier heist films in city settings, this heist in a massive plane at 40,000 feet introduces a whole new world of challenges.” Of course, Cyrus and...

Rappers Cardi B and Offset celebrated the new year together amid their ongoing relationship drama. However, they are not together as yet. After fans captured footage of the two celebrating New Year’s Eve together at a club in Miami, Cardi B took to social media to clarify the status of their relationship, since she previously confirmed their split in December, reports People magazine.
In a now-expired Spaces livestream on X (formerly Twitter) that fans recorded, the ‘Wap’ rapper confirmed that they did spend the holiday together, but admitted that she won’t consider their relationship to be reconciled until they work on their issues as a couple and individually.
As per People, the Grammy winner began the live chat by referring to the viral clip of her dancing next to the ‘Set It Off’ artiste, with whom she tied the knot in 2017. “I want to be clear to you...

With the lead-up to and release of his sophomore solo album, Set It Off, Offset is paying homage to his biggest inspiration, Michael Jackson. From his red carpet looks to the video for the single “Fan” — in which Offset sports looks that call back to such M.J. hits as “Thriller” and “Smooth Criminal” — the rap star and streetwear-meets-high-fashion trendsetter is looking to make his own “long-lasting” impression, he tells THR, by channeling the King of Pop’s legendary fashion through his own unique style.
“When I say ‘set it off,’ I mean blowing shit up — my career, the songs, the energy, the vibe, and creatively taking it to the next level where nobody has seen,” says Offset of his new album.
While the album’s cover shows the former Migos rapper, 31, dressed as Jackson during his “Billie Jean” era, the promotional cycle leading up to its Oct. 13 release found Offset wearing M.

It may be time for Jada Pinkett Smith to bring herself back to the red table.
For years now, the actress and personality — known for movies like “Set It Off” and “Girls Trip,” as well as for her high-profile marriage to Will Smith and family life — has traded on a sort of tactical openness. “Red Table Talk,” a streaming series in which she, her daughter Willow Smith, and her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris discuss personal matters, has, from its 2018 launch to its leaving Facebook Watch and going on hiatus earlier this year, helped rebrand a performer already recognized for her flair and edge as a say-almost-everything matriarch. And the vivid public life of Will Smith — including his dishy 2021 memoir “Will” and his turbulent 2022 Oscar night — has kept Jada’s name in headlines, too.
Now, though, Pinkett Smith seeks to thread a very narrow needle: Correcting a record that she has helped...

NBC wasted no time getting into the “why” of its exclusive sit-down interview with the polarizing Jada Pinkett Smith for Jada’s Story: An NBC News Special With Hoda Kotb.

More images of the slap heard around the world played before teasing the previously shared bombshells that she and Smith have lived separate lives since 2016 and that Chris Rock asked her out. Offset may be one of the biggest rappers at the moment, but at home, he's simply just dad. The 31-year-old musician, who is married to Cardi B, has five children, all of whom are from different relationships, the most recent being Cardi. Offset and Cardi have two kids together, daughter Kulture and son Wave, who join Offset's three other kids, Jordan, Kody, and Kalea. All five kiddos appeared in Offset and Cardi B's "Jealousy" music video, released in July, making it another sweet family affair.
From the looks of Offset's social media, his kids all get along with one another and even posed for the May/June 2022 cover of Essence together. Of blending their families, Cardi told the publication, "After we got married, that's when I first met his kids. I always wanted them to love me, and they really do. They tell me that. “Ask God why, I didn’t get an answer/Why I lose my brother to bullets/Why I lose my grandma to cancer,” Offset harmonizes on “Say My Grace.” Few could have imagined that the Atlanta artist who emerged as one-third of Migos a decade ago with “Versace,” reintroducing the concept of a rap group to the Zoomer generation, would settle uncomfortably into the role of husband to pop icon Cardi B, and become a target of internet gossip so pernicious that the phrase “Offset cheating” elicits thousands of Google search results dating back years.

Since mid-2022, heavy news and speculation have followed Offset. Rumblings of tension among his rap group Migos began when Quavo and Takeoff set off as a duo that May and continued even after Takeoff was tragically murdered last November. In recent months, things began to look lighter: He and Quavo reunited for a tribute to Takeoff at the BET Awards in June; in July, he dropped “Jealousy,” a jolting single with his wife, Cardi B, and released a cinematic self-directed video along with it; and in September, he joined Twitch...

Actress Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed that she and husband Will Smith have secretly been separated for the last seven years. In an interview to ‘People’ magazine, the ‘Set It Off’ and ‘Girls Trip’ actor, 52, has admitted that the pair, who tied the knot in 1997, are still trying to “figure out” what the future of their marriage looks like.
The couple share children Jaden and Willow, as well as Will’s son Trey, whom he had with ex-wife Sheree Zampino.
Jada admitted the pair were in fact living separately when Will Smith, 55, famously slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars in 2022, when the latter cracked a joke about his wife’s bald hairstyle. Jada suffers from alopecia.
She noted that no permanent decisions have been made about the future of her marriage.

Welp! That old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be. Kevin Hart recently learned a harsh lesson in the art of aging after challenging former NFL player Stevan Ridley to a 40-yard dash. During his attempt to do “young stuff,” Hart tore his lower abdomen and abductors. Calling himself the Dumbest Man Alive, Hart is recovering in a wheelchair after the incident. To control the narrative and perhaps warn his fans to respect their aging bodies, Hart posted a message to social media detailing his injury.
In the video, Hart says he argued with Ridley about who is faster. The duo agreed to engage in a 40-yard dash, and that’s where it all went south.
“We get out there, we go run the 40-yard dash,” Hart said. “40-yard dash. Guys, I blew all my s–t. Tore my lower abdomen, my abductors. I don’t even know what that is,...

It’s been a long time since Cash Money Records took over for the ’99 and the 2000, but Juvenile was sharp as ever during his highly anticipated NPR Tiny Desk Concert. During his nearly 30-minute set, the rapper was joined by his longtime producer Mannie Fresh and fellow Louisiana native Jon Batiste.
Fresh encouraged the crowd to cheer on Juvenile as the latter soaked in the enthusiastic response before effortlessly cruising through early classics like “400 Degreez,” “Bling Bling,” and “Ha.” With the backing of a full band and brass section, he continued with later hits like “Set It Off” and “Slow Motion.”
To close out the set, Juvenile was joined by a string section for his signature hit, “Back That Azz Up,” delivering a lively performance that saw the audience shouting along to the chorus. Watch Juvenile’s full Tiny Desk Concert below.

There's something to be said for a reliable craftsman like "Fast X" helmer Louis Leterrier. Few would try and seriously argue that the director of "Transporter 2," "The Incredible Hulk," and "Now You See Me" is secretly a visionary, but there's absolutely a consistency in quality to his work regardless of genre or budget. It's what also allowed Leterrier to quietly go from helming every episode of the virtuoso puppet fantasy series "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance" to establishing the template for the deft and quick-footed crime caper "Lupin" in the span of but two years.
Even with a plethora of experience under his belt, "Fast X" is easily the biggest challenge Leterrier has ever taken on ... as one would hope given its reported $340 million (!) budget. On top of that, it's a job that he stumbled into under pretty bizarre circumstances. As you may recall, he took over from...

The awards show will also be posthumously honoring former Sony Pictures Entertainment senior VP and music supervisor, Pilar McCurry.
Williams’ standards have been recorded by such decorated artists as Ray Charles, David Bowie, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, the Carpenters, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Luther Vandross and Willie Nelson, among others. He’s previously been recognized with six Oscars, nine Grammys, six Golden Globes, and two Emmy nominations.
“There is a strange, beautiful alchemy, that occurs when the perfect song placement transforms
both the scene and the song,” said Williams in a news release. “I have been graced with many opportunities to write music for picture in my career, and it feels like magic every single time.

The stunt world has lost a superstar. George P. Wilbur, the prolific stunt performer, coordinator, and double has died at the age of 81.
Film fans and critics seldom give stunt performers the love they deserve, but as "Once Upon A Time... in Hollywood" showed us, they're often the invisible pillars holding up entire productions. Without their high-octane mix of bravery and precise training, and with a generous dash of daredevil recklessness, we would never have gotten the death-defying, thrill-inducing, price-of-the-ticket justifying action that has made films like "Die Hard," "Escape From New York," and "Total Recall" such rewatchable classics. And Wilbur, whose resume was nearing a stunning 150 credits when he retired in 2013, did stunts on all of them.
Born at the height of the Second World War in Connecticut, in 1941, Wilbur would go on to enlist in the Navy before eventually finding his way to Tuscon, Arizona, where he worked...

Last week, “The Equalizer” star and executive producer Queen Latifah announced that the hit CBS series had been picked up for a third and fourth season.
The show, in which Latifah plays vigilante Robyn McCall, is currently the network’s No. 2 primetime series, behind only stalwart show “NCIS,” so the multi-season commitment is logical. But success is never a given, at least not in Latifah’s eyes, who told Variety she’s “never satisfied” with the status quo.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to have a film career where we were always coming up with new things. We’re always trying to push the envelope and be more creative, so I bring that mentality to television,” she explained. “How can we push it even further? How can we make it even more beautiful or more interesting?”

On March 8, 1991, Mario Van Peebles’ feature directorial debut “New Jack City” premiered at the Mann Village Theatre in Westwood. On Saturday, a little more than 30 years later, Van Peebles walked the red carpet outside the very same cinema — now renamed the Regency Village Theatre — for a special screening of his classic crime thriller, hosted by the American Cinematheque.
Van Peebles was joined for the special event by “New Jack City” star Vanessa Estelle Williams, plus his children — Mandela and Makaylo, who joined their dad onstage to record his introduction to the movie, as well as Marley and Maya.

It’s an on and off screen reunion for Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith and their characters when the latter guest stars in the very fun February 27 episode of The Equalizer. The actresses previously worked together in 1996’s Set It Off and 2017’s Girls Trip, while their characters’ past mission teaming up leads to some great banter. In “Legacy,” Robyn McCall turns to Smith’s master thief, Jessie Cook, when she needs help recovering a valuable painting stolen from a Black family during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Here are five things to know about the episode. Jessie’s Unpredictability Makes Her Entertaining … But Not the Best Partner “What’s the point of doing anything if you’re not going to have a little fun along the way?” Jessie asks at one point, and oh, does she have fun. Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith will share the screen very soon!
The real-life friends will reunite on-screen for an upcoming episode of The Equalizer.
Smith will appear on the CBS procedural as Jessie Cook, a well-known thief with an eye for detail.
She's unpredictable, devious, and amoral, which should make for an exciting episode of the series.
Latifah's character, McCall, has already worked with Jessie, so they go way back.
However, they both butted heads in the past, vowing never to work together again due to their very different beliefs.
Sounds fun, right?
The pair have worked together on several projects in the past, including Set It Off and Girls Trip.
No details have been revealed about when the episode will air, but the series is on hiatus until Sunday, February 27, due to the Olympics.

“A great man doesn’t seek to lead; he’s called to it.”
This is the line spoken by Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) to his son Paul (Timothée Chalamet) in “Dune,” Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic science-fiction novel. But it also underscores the remarkable journey that Mary Parent, vice chairman of Worldwide Production for Legendary and one of the film’s producers, took to become one of the most successful and respected executives in Hollywood.
