Jason Cloth, a Canadian financier with executive producer credits on dozens of films such as Joker, Licorice Pizza and the upcoming Mission: Impossible movie, is out as co-head of C2 Motion Picture Group as he fields allegations of fraud on a number of projects.
The announcement that Cloth stepped down, made on Tuesday, comes less than a week after a Florida jury found that he defrauded an investor out of millions of dollars for the production of a slate of movies, including Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Monkey Man and NBA docuseries The Pathway. Cloth, who didn’t mount a defense in the trial, was ordered to pay roughly $19.6 million. Since 2021, he and his former financing company Creative Wealth Media have been named in at least four lawsuits, two of which have since been voluntarily dismissed, accusing him of making false statements to solicit investments and loans that he allegedly failed to repay.

When we think about the world’s richest actors, Robert Downey Jr, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise are the names we cannot just skip. However, many would be surprised to know that the richest actor in the world has not been an active face in the industry for now. If you’re a fan of the Mission: Impossible franchise, you owe a debt of gratitude to none other than Steven Spielberg. That’s right, the legendary filmmaker, 77, not only inspired Tom Cruise to offer the directing gig to Brian De Palma for the first film in the series, but he also played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of Cruise’s career.
Mission: Impossible, which was released in 1996, is one of Cruise’s most notable films. This marked not only his first work as a producer, but also his first serious attempt at a major franchise. But above all, it is an exceptional flick that set the standard for the greatest franchise that continues to this day.

There are few actors as versatile and intensely arresting as Lakeith Stanfield. Since appearing in Destin Daniel Cretton's Short Term 12 upon graduating from high school, Stanfield has gone on to work with premier talents, including Ava DuVernay, Jordan Peele and Donald Glover. Most recently, he joined his contemporaries Jonathan Majors, Regina King and Idris Elba in Netflix’s thunderous Western The Harder They Fall.
Typically, Hollywood’s leading men have been charismatic but often hyper-masculine. That’s why moviegoers have historically gravitated toward everyone from Tom Cruise to Denzel Washington. The success of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes shows how, for almost 60 years, the series has managed to sustain audience interest
By pure hot-streak longevity, the most impressive feat in Hollywood franchising is the Mission: Impossible series, which began in 1996 and may – may – finally wrap up next year, after eight entries and nearly 30 years without a single continuity reboot. But true to the fictional history of the Planet of the Apes series, it may be the apes who ultimately inherit this title from the petty, small-minded humans. The original Planet of the Apes came out in 1968 – and based on first weekend box office and positive reviews for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the latest installment of a rebooted series that began in 2011, the series will probably remain when the first movie reaches its 60th anniversary in just four years. This may be the most purely resilient series in Hollywood.

The Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont opened up about meeting fantastic people in a callous industry like the film industry during a 2014 interview. He hated that the tabloids painted a bad picture of an actor like Tom Cruise without getting the full picture of how he is in real life. Darabont shared that people should ask his good friend Simon Pegg about the kind of human the Mission: Impossible actor was.

Tom Cruise has made one thing crystal clear when it comes to stunts, he’s practically invincible, and there’s nothing he can’t pull off. Yet, now that he’s seemingly conquered everything there is to be conquered in the stunt world, fans are itching for him to return to some of his villainous roles.

Revenge flicks are nothing new on the market, and while we’ve always had them, there was a proper little boom of such movies after the success of Liam Neeson’s Taken. Now, many have tried, some have failed, some have succeeded in making a good revenge flick, and while we don’t know if the movie we are reporting about is going to succeed or fail, it is certainly going to be one of the most original takes on the genre. Namely, legendary Oscar-nominee June Squibb (94) is probably the last name you’d think of when searching for a revenge flick star, but this year’s upcoming movie Thelma is going to deliver just that. The movie has just released its first trailer and you will be able to check it out below.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is a more typical summer movie season-starter than last week’s disappointing “The Fall Guy” (Universal). It’s a franchise film and it’s from Disney (which usually starts things off with a Marvel film).
It’s expected to open to over $50 million this weekend and become the first to gross over $100 million domestic. Industry sources suggest that over the summer, at least eight other releases (extending to early September) will reach this mark. A week ago, that guess would gave been 10.
The same sources pegged “The Fall Guy” as likely to gross over $125 million in the U.S./Canada. This weekend will clarify its fate, but the current trajectory suggests around $80 million. That’s a disappointment for theaters as well as Universal, which spent around $140 million to make the film before marketing.
“Apes” is one of several titles now projected in the $125-$150 million range.

[This story contains spoilers for The Fall Guy.]
After the many industry-wide challenges of the last four years, The Fall Guy screenwriter Drew Pearce just wanted to make a feel-good Friday night movie, and based on various metrics, the consensus among critics and audiences is that he and the rest of his collaborators succeeded. In ten years, the social framing around the David Leitch-directed movie won’t be that it opened to $27.7 million instead of a projected $30 million. Rather, the impression of a good action romcom will remain above all.
Pearce is no stranger to IP-driven films, as he’s officially written for Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3, the fifth Mission: Impossible film, Rogue Nation, as well as the Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. That also doesn’t include all the cups of coffee he’s had with other franchises in an uncredited capacity. So, compared to the aforementioned IP, the assumption is that The Fall Guy,...

One of the most purely enjoyable movies to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival found June Squibb on a mission for justice. Josh Margolin’s debut Thelma finds the nonagenarian actor in, shockingly, her first leading role (starring alongside Richard Roundtree in his final role) as a grandma who hunts down a phone scammer who pretended to be her grandson (Fred Hechinger). Also starring Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, and Malcolm McDowell, it’s arriving June 21 and Magnolia Pictures has now debuted the first trailer.

Magnolia Pictures has released a brand new trailer for "Thelma." This film may not be on your radar just yet, but after watching this trailer, it probably should be. Serving as the feature directorial debut of Josh Margolin, the big hook here is that Oscar-nominee June Squibb is getting to lead a revenge thriller at the age of 94. More than that, it marks the first time that Squibb has been given a leading role in a movie in her long, storied career. Check the trailer out for yourself above.
The trailer is impossibly charming, even though there is an insidious plot at the center of it all. Squibb's character gets scammed out of a bunch of money and, with no options left, she sets out on a path of revenge. It's not unrealistically action-packed or anything like that, but it comes off as quite delightful. Squibb is paired with the late Richard Roundtree,...

"We all have our good days and our bad days?" "And what's today?" "We'll find out." Magnolia Pics has launched their full official trailer the Sundance 2024 hit film Thelma, from writer / director Josh Margolin. It didn't win any awards, but it did win over the hearts of many Sundance viewers as one of the best of the fest (I wrote a glowing review). Inspired by a real-life experience of Margolin's own grandmother, Thelma puts a clever spin on movies like Mission: Impossible, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. Yes, she kicks some serious ass. With infectious humor, Margolin employs the familiar tropes of the action genre in hilarious, age-appropriate ways to tackle aging with agency. In the first leading film role of her 70-year career, June Squibb plays Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business.

Tom Cruise is known for his action-hero persona in Hollywood. The actor has played many roles which has allowed him to flex his acting muscles as well as enabled him to perform death-defying stunts. He has headlined major franchises such as Mission: Impossible, and Top Gun, and has featured in one-off action blockbusters such as Knight and Day.
Cruise was also part of the disastrous The Mummy reboot in 2017, which was a box office failure and officially shut down the Dark Universe before it even began. However, before he came on board the ill-fated franchise, he was rumored to be in the running for the original films starring Brendan Fraser along with Brad Pitt as well. Movie theaters can’t sell tickets if they don’t have a lot of new blockbusters to advertise on their marquees. And the actors and writers strikes that ground Hollywood to a standstill in 2023 left studios with fewer movies to release as 2024 got started. As the biggest exhibitor in the world, AMC Theatres certainly felt the lack of franchise movies and tentpole films as the year kicked off, but the company still managed to beat projections with its quarterly earnings. That was partly thanks to the March release of “Dune: Part Two” and “Kung Fu Panda 4,” popular sequels that helped off-set declining admissions in January and February.
Despite the late breaking entry of some must-see movies, revenues at the the theater chain fell to $951.4 million from $954.4 million in the prior-year quarter. However, net losses for the three-month period ending in March narrowed to $163.5 million, or 62 cents per share. That...

Getting ahold of Paramount-owned franchises could be a dream for Sony, but big regulatory issues stand in its way.
Sony has spent the last decade doing things a little differently than Hollywood-based entertainment companies. That makes plenty of sense, considering that so much of Sony’s revenue comes from other sources than its TV and movie productions; video game sales and hardware manufacturing are the company’s true bread and butter. But the company could be about to undergo a big shift, as it has joined private equity company Apollo Global Management to make a $26 billion offer to acquire Paramount Global. There are plenty of obstacles to clear before a deal can be made, but if the transaction does eventually go through, Sony will be able to evolve to a new level of content arms dealing that has made the company so successful in recent years.

Cruise’s celebrated action franchise created a legacy since the first Mission: Impossible movie was released in 1996 and Cruise’s titular character Ethan Hunt— an agent in the Impossible Mission Force (Imf) espionage agency lived on with a huge fanbase. Of course, the franchise has been a spectacle but the death of many characters over the years in the movie series definitely rattled some fans.

Jeremy Renner is the strongest real-life Avenger and there’s no denying it after his recovery from last year’s accident. The Hawkeye star was run over by his heavy snowcat when attempting to stop it from running over his nephew. While fans read about his broken ribs, legs, and other numerous injuries, one recent revelation from his Mayor of Kingstown co-star not only paints a picture of the horrible nature of the accident but also of the resilient Renner.
Jeremy Renner will return in the third season of Mayor of Kingstown
Michael Beach revealed that Renner clinically died when he was first admitted to the hospital right after the accident. The Dahmer actor has been consistently posting about his recovery process to his Instagram. He recently appeared in a Super Bowl commercial for Silk Protein Almondmilk.

Ian McKellen is one of the most respected and talented actors in Hollywood. Over the course of his lengthy career, he established himself as a force to be reckoned with, achieving so much through his acting career that he was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. His versatility knows no limitations, having starred in many different kinds of roles and movies from all genres.
Sir Ian McKellen as Gandolf in The Hobbit
Considering just how talented and successful he is, it is not surprising that the actor is offered many different types of roles. Sometimes that may be through lesser-known sources, and others they may be very high-profile projects.
It would seem that the actor was asked to be a part of Tom Cruise’s iconic film series, Mission: Impossible, being offered the role of Commander Swanbeck in the second movie. Interestingly enough, the actor rejected this offer due to one reason.

Whatever fate befalls Paramount Global after the smoke clears, one of the Hollywood Trivial Pursuit questions someday will be which heavy hitters have issued statements of support for Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Paramount’s holding company, National Amusements Inc. — and which didn’t.
Even as the Paramount special committee passed on the offer from David Ellison’s company May 4, sources say the Skydance-RedBird alliance has not given up. The premise, a source with knowledge of the situation tells The Hollywood Reporter, is that the rival Apollo/Sony Pictures offer now up for Paramount’s consideration will fail for multiple reasons, with Skydance still waiting in the wings.
So despite much Wall Street skepticism over a proposed deal that favors controlling shareholder Shari Redstone over other investors, “Skydance has been on an extremely aggressive PR campaign in the last month to convince everyone how legitimate they are,” says a prominent media mogul.

Monday Am: Universal’s The Fall Guy has tumbled to $27.7M, this after a lower-than-expected Sunday of $6.9M, -33% from Saturday. Global cume is at $64.4M, a $1M off. Some are worried as to what this lower than expected result means for star power, specifically for Gosling coming off Barbie. The 3x Oscar nominated actor did everything to promote Fall Guy, down to dressing up as Beavis at the Hollywood premiere of the film. Look, as we mentioned, Fall Guy is third highest opening of his career stateside, Barbie being an outlier. Moviegoers in a streaming age are far too sophisticated and deliberate before they leave the house and an original Hollywood stunt-set action film wasn’t worth their time. Perhaps Gosling as a different kind of astronaut than he was in First Man is worth the time in Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary. In the end, as of late,...

Henry Cavill has starred in multiple action films in his career and has even performed many of his own stunts. The actor starred in two action comedies this year alone, featuring in Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle and Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which saw him return to his action hero persona.
The Superman star also featured in Mission: Impossible – Fallout in 2018, which saw trade blows with Tom Cruise. The latter, who is known for performing dangerous stunts on his own reportedly inspired Cavill to do so on the sets of the film. However, he had to go through one obstacle before he was allowed to perform one iconic stunt that the Cruise-led franchise is known for.

Rebecca Ferguson’s unbound potential was explored and exploited long before she found an outlet in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films. Her authority over the craft made her a sensational and sought-after talent in Hollywood almost overnight after hard launching into the action blockbuster genre with Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation in 2015.

Show-stopping stunts have long been as important to the James Bond movie formula as gadgets, villains, and the appropriate amount of workday martinis. While the early Connery movies didn’t emphasize such stunts quite as much as future installments did, audiences soon came to expect in the 1970s to see Bond put his life on the line in some incredible stunt sequence for queen, country, and our entertainment.
While other action franchises have certainly raised the bar for film stunts since then, there is a charm to the best Bond stunts that can’t easily be replicated. They’re conceptually creative, they’re often done practically, and they have gradually helped shape the considerable mythology of the world’s greatest spy. They’re as stylish as an expertly tailored suit and as dangerous as an assignment from M. These are the best James Bond stunts ever.

Ever since the dawn of cinema, stunts have been at the heart of the medium. The very first motion picture, Eadweard Muybridge’s 1878 reel The Horse In Motion, captured a jockey riding a horse at speed — cinema’s first stunt! And ever since then, fearless stunt people have been engaging themselves in the ultimate game of one-upmanship, putting their bodies on the line and minds at work to help make movies soar higher, go faster, hit harder, and be bigger than ever before. Even if the Oscars still aren’t ready to recognise that just yet with a Stunt category, we don’t need an awards ceremony to pay tribute to the crazy folk who do this stuff for real.
To celebrate the stunt community – and mark the release of stunt-tastic action extravaganza The Fall Guy – take a look back over the craziest movie stunts that were actually done for real.

Paramount Pictures is in the midst of fielding offers from other companies as the legendary studio looks to shore up its future. Now, a new contender has emerged in the form of Sony Pictures as the drama continues to unfold. One of Paramount's most direct rivals in Hollywood has thrown its hat in the ring to buy the studio for $26 billion. If this is the option the powers that be decide to go with, it would represent a huge shake-up for the industry on several fronts.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony and private equity firm Apollo Global Management have submitted a $26 billion, all-cash offer to buy Paramount. Rather crucially, the deal would take the company private, whereas it currently exists as a publicly traded company. As a result, it would be a major change beyond combining two of the biggest studios in Hollywood under one roof, so...

Ostensibly a big-screen reboot of the 1980s television series of the same name, “The Fall Guy” is actually director and former stunt performer David Leitch’s love letter to both his wife, producer Kelly McCormick, and the undersung art of stunt work — only not always in that order.
Working closely with screenwriter and executive producer Drew Pearce, who previously scripted his “Fast and the Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” Leitch creates a clearinghouse of gobsmacking stunts (some truly record-breaking) while chronicling the tumultuous relationship between veteran stunt man Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) and first-time director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). It’s quick-witted (and quick-footed) fun that bridges multiple generations of Hollywood moviemaking, melding together rom-coms and bombastic action into one blockbuster package.
Since making his screenwriting debut on Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3,” Pearce has developed an aptitude for conceiving stories that maintain a singular yet cohesive tonal balance.

Amid Paramount Global’s removal of Bob Bakish as CEO and the ongoing uncertainty of a company sale, it was business as usual for the first quarter at the media conglomerate — which included a $1.3 billion charge for content write-offs as well as layoffs.
Paramount Global reported Q1 2024 earnings Monday, announcing Bakish’s exit and the installation of an unusual three-in-a-box “Office of the CEO”: CBS’s George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks, and Paramount Pictures’ Brian Robbins. The committee of three made brief remarks on the earnings call but didn’t take questions from analysts. The call, which lasted less than 10 minutes, concluded with the theme music to “Mission: Impossible.”
During the first quarter of 2024, Paramount Global took a total of $1.12 billion in content charges, including $909 million for the impairment of content to its estimated fair value as well as $209 million for development cost write-offs and contract-termination costs.

Josh Brolin contradicts previous reports that writer-director Christopher McQuarrie is involved in Sicario 3.
The plans for a third Sicario film seem to change with the wind, or at least change with the rather unstable foundations of film production, given how turbulent the last few years have been for the industry.
We first heard back in summer of 2022 that a third entry in the well-regarded series was on the way. One of the series’ stars, Josh Brolin, was out and about promoting his western/sci-fi TV series, Outer Range, and he had this to say: “It’s been written and it’s been rewritten. So it’s out there. We think it deserves a third one if we can make it in the way that we want to make it”.
However, a year later he seemed less optimistic about the film’s chances of happening, saying, “these types of movies...

George Cheeks, Brian Robbins and Chris McCarthy, the Paramount Global executives chosen to occupy the Office of the CEO as a replacement for the departing Bob Bakish, sought to reassure Wall Street on Monday that they have a plan.
The remarks, which took up just two minutes at the start of Paramount’s first-quarter earnings call, featured short comments from each exec, with the trio being played off by the Mission: Impossible theme. Cheeks began by thanking Bakish for his leadership.
“Paramount Global has the greatest content in the world,” he continued. “We’ve got incredible assets at this company.”
Equally as important, McCarthy said, is the fact that the three execs stepping in for Bakish are well-acquainted with each other. “We’re true partners,” he said, with a “deep respect for each other.”

Belgian rapper and filmmaker Baloji and French film actress Emmanuelle Béart have been announced as co-presidents of the Cannes Film Festival’s Caméra d’Or jury for the upcoming 77th edition, running from May 14 to 25.
The award for the best first film is open to all the debut feature films presented in Official Selection and the parallel sections of Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week.
The Caméra d’Or Jury has been co-chaired three times before: by actress Françoise Fabian and director Daniel Schmid in 1996, by Marthe Keller and Géraldine Chaplin in 2002, and by brothers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne in 2006.
Announcing the pair today, the festival described Baloji and Béart as “free spirits with no limits, who rely on their art to achieve creative freedom.” Baloji is best known for his directorial debut Omen, which debuted at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it picked up the New Voice Prize in Un Certain Regard.

In the "Star Trek" episode "The Enemy Within", Captain Kirk (William Shatner) beams up from the planet Alpha 177 covered in a mysterious magnetic dust. Unbeknownst to any of the Enterprise crew, the dust has fouled up the transporter and created a second Kirk inside its memory buffer. After Kirk leaves the room, the second Kirk materializes ... but displays an altered personality. It seems that Kirk has been bifurcated into a gentle version of himself and a cruel, aggressive version of himself. For much of "The Enemy Within," the Evil Kirk stalks around the halls of the U.S.S. Enterprise, startling the crew and accosting Yeoman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney). Gentle Kirk soon realizes that he needs his aggression back in order to be whole. Eventually, the two Kirks confront one another.

What does the future hold for Paramount Global? The odds of a seismic M&a event seem to be increasing: Private-equity firm Apollo Global has reportedly offered $11 billion for Paramount’s Hollywood studios. Short of carving up the “mountain of entertainment,” as the Paramount+ tagline boasts, analysts say the overture could drive up bidding for the entirety of Paramount Global — which is what Shari Redstone, who owns a controlling stake in the media conglomerate, is understood to prefer.
Given that backdrop, let’s consider what Paramount Global comprises — and the potential effect of selling it off in its entirety or in pieces. As it stands, Paramount Global, led by CEO Bob Bakish, is made up of three segments: filmed entertainment, TV media and direct-to-consumer streaming.
The company’s filmed entertainment unit, which includes Paramount Pictures, is its smallest, representing 10% of overall revenue in 2023. Last year, the segment generated revenue of...

Paramount has a new offer on the table, but Shari Redstone might not even get out of bed for this one. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that private equity firm Apollo Global Management (also an investor in “Dune” studio Legendary Entertainment) offered Paramount Global $11 billion for its film and TV studio.
The specifics of exactly which assets Apollo wants to buy (and not buy) are unclear, but the film and TV studios would include Paramount Pictures and the production capabilities at networks like CBS and MTV. Linear networks would stay behind, as well as distribution platforms like Paramount+ and BET+.
Also unknown is if the iconic Paramount lot is part of the offer, which houses so much of Paramount’s studio production. When reached by IndieWire, a Paramount Global rep had no comment. Reps for Apollo did not return a request for comment.

It appears Shari Redstone remains firmly opposed to breaking up Paramount Global.
Redstone, president of National Amusements Inc. — the controlling shareholder of Paramount Global — was “unconvinced” by Apollo Global Management’s $11 billion offer to buy Paramount’s film and TV studio, the Financial Times reported, citing anonymous sources. The reported price tag would be a premium over the market cap of the entire company. Instead, per the Ft report, Redstone is preferring to continue negotiating a deal with Skydance’s David Ellison, in partnership with RedBird Capital and Tencent, to sell Nai (and then merge Skydance with Paramount Global).
Shares of Paramount Global closed down 5.5% Thursday following the Ft’s report, amid an uptick in broader market indexes. That came after the stock popped nearly 12% following the Wall Street Journal’s report that Apollo had made an $11 billion offer to acquire Paramount Pictures and the Paramount TV studios group.

Paramount will have to seriously consider this latest bid to purchase some of its assets.
There’s seemingly too much smoke around Paramount and its discussions with other companies regarding mergers and acquisitions for it not to eventually lead to some fire. The Wall Street Journal is stoking those flames yet again by reporting that Apollo Global Management is offering $11 billion to acquire Paramount’s TV and movie studio, which is more than the market capitalization of the entire Paramount Global company, which also includes multiple TV channels, merchandising, and more.
Key Details: Apollo’s interest in Paramount was first reported earlier in March. Acquiring just Paramount’s studios would allow Apollo to sidestep regulatory concerns regarding CBS. Paramount is still mulling an offer from David Ellison of Skydance Media, as well. Get 30 Days Free $5.99+ / month paramountplus.com
