The story goes thus: it was 1985, and Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan, having enjoyed nearly two decades of cinematic success in his native country, wanted to extend his reach into the United States. Chan had already tried to infiltrate America in 1980 with Robert Clouse's film "The Big Brawl," but while it was highly respected by martial arts fans, "Brawl" wasn't the massive hit Chan wanted. Chan had already directed four movies by 1985 but still felt that an American director could translate his fightin' sensibilities for a North American audience more accurately. So, he hired genre filmmaker James Glickenhaus to helm the 1985 actioner "The Protector."
Chan and Glickenhaus butted heads throughout production, as Glickenhaus refused to film fight sequences in a way Chan approved of. At the end of production, Chan merely re-edited the film himself and directed new scenes in the hope of salvaging the project.

Actors Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker collaborated on the hit comedy series Rush Hour. But when they first met, Tucker’s style of acting would sometimes throw Chan off his game.
Jackie Chan once had no idea why ‘Rush Hour’ was so successful Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Rush Hour is one of both Chan’s and Tucker’s most successful films. It earned $245 million worldwide on a very modest budget according to The Numbers. Its success inspired two more Rush Hour movies, with Rush Hour 2 being the highest-grossing of the franchise.
Many critics pointed to the chemistry and intriguing dynamic between Chan and Tucker as partially responsible for the film’s performance. The unorthodox pairing of the comedian and action star led to one of the most memorable onscreen partnerships in the buddy cop genre. But if you asked Chan himself, Chan couldn’t pinpoint...

Every kid of a certain age grew up wanting to be Jackie Chan. A legend in Hong Kong and most of the world from the late-seventies on, Jackie Chan also, at long last, became a superstar in North America after the release of his 1996 classic Rumble in the Bronx. Supercop, First Strike and more dubbed versions of his Hong Kong movies would follow, but it was 1998’s Rush Hour, which paired him with Chris Tucker, that made him a phenomenon in the United States. It was as if, at long last, the United States was let in on a secret the rest of the world already knew.
Jackie Chan emerged in the late nineties after a failed attempt to make him into a Bruce Lee clone. Never wanting to be a typical martial arts star, Chan opted to mix comedy and martial arts in a way that made him a...

"Halo" is a story about a super soldier known as Master Chief (aka John-117) who fights aliens in space over ancient technology. You might think from the description that it's a story you've seen many times before. Certainly, "Halo" wears its influences on its sleeve. But don't underestimate the world of the games, which has thus far been the subject of over 30 novels, several comics, and one season of a live-action television show. Bungie cut their teeth directing the "Marathon" trilogy of narratively ambitious first-person shooters. "Halo" was targeted at a wider audience, but its developers still took the time to flesh out the game's setting. Rather than the heavy metal mishmash of "Doom" and its ilk, this would be a world of alien religious sects, military jargon, and Gregorian chanting.

"The enemy has moved in." Gravitas has released a new US trailer for the crazy cool action film Vanguard, starring Jackie Chan - who is still making action films despite announcing he would retire. This time he re-teams with the Hk director of his classic action films Supercop, Supercop 2, Rumble in the Bronx, and First Strike - Stanley Tong. An accountant is threatened by the world's deadliest mercenary organization and Covert security company Vanguard is the last hope of survival for him. Of course. This is basically a Michael Bay film made by a Hong Kong director instead. Also starring Yang Yang, Miya Muqi, Lun Ai, Ruohan Xu, and Zhengting Zhu. As brainless as this movie will be, I must admit it looks like a massive amount of explosive action fun - with drones and lions and gatling guns and more. Might be worth a watch. Here's the new...

Note: This piece was originally published on May 30, 2017, but in light of The Defenders hitting Netflix this Friday, we thought it had some thoughts worth reiterating.
Marvel and Netflix have created something truly special with their four superhero shows: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. They've established a unique, ongoing, and shared universe that not only respects each character's source material, but also builds upon and expands their lore. Fans have clearly responded, as many media outlets report that these are some of the most-popular shows on Netflix.
Daredevil is heading into its third season, while Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are each preparing for their second, but what about the fate of Iron Fist? According to SuperBroMovies, Danny Rand himself, actor Finn Jones, will soon issue a Season 2 announcement. While that's certainly welcome news for the whole Marvel/Netflix enterprise, it's probably safe to say that Iron Fist...
