“Well, this may seem like déjà vu…” wrote filmmaker Tamara Saviano on her Facebook page this week, alerting friends that her documentary about musician Guy Clark, “Without Getting Killed or Caught” was being announced Thursday as premiering at this year’s South By Southwest Film Festival… just as it was announced for last year. The good news is, this year’s SXSW, being virtual, can’t get canceled (at least short of dire societal circumstances even worse than a pandemic), so the doc is virtually certain to meet its premiere date this time.
Saviano made the tough decision last March to wait it out a year and submit it again in hopes that the festival screening committee wouldn’t have a change of heart. If a film about some of the most celebrated singer-songwriters to ever come out of Texas — Townes Van Zandt also being a primary subject — couldn’t premiere at SXSW,...

Sterling Archer has returned to the land of the living…finally.

Sometimes in films, there are truly great moments. There are amazing fight scenes in action movies, there are memorable one-liners in comedies, and there are terrifying sequences in horror. There are car chases. There are even some special motorbike chases. But one moment which stands out in any film is the impromptu music scene.
We see music scenes quite a lot in film, but mostly they fit in to the flow of the storyline, or form part of the narrative. If we’re watching a musical, then it can only be expected that there will be a music scene. If we’re watching a light hearted romantic comedy, music scenes often transition seamlessly within the plot. But some scenes break the mould. We don’t expect to see the main character break into song, or for a guitar to be produced from nowhere. Unexpected Jazz concerts or drum solos take us by pleasant surprise.

Plus, is Alec really innocent after all? This is madness.
The twins’ love lives got even more complicated on the Jan. 15 episode of The Lying Game, as Emma (Alexandra Chando) gave Sutton her blessing to pursue Ethan (Blair Redford). Like she really needed it. Meanwhile, Emma finally gave into her feelings for Thayer (Christian Alexander), which sent Ethan into a jealous/drunken stupor — and straight into Sutton’s bed.
Mads (Alice Greczyn) paid a visit to Alec (Adrian Pasdar) in prison, and somehow he was able to convince her he was merely “holding” the tire iron in the infamous photo, rather than using it to kill Derek. Even crazier, he might be telling the truth! Tyler and Theresa tracked down the woman who planted the tire iron in Alec’s bag, though she has no idea who paid her. Oh well.
Later, during a fit of bitch-fueled rage, Mads called...

Plus, a mysterious stranger arrives in town — and, of course, he has ties to Rebecca.
TV’s most complicated show — seriously, The Lying Game is like Lost meets Homeland meets a brain hemorrhage — returned for its second season Jan. 8, and it’s now more twisted than ever. With Alec (Adrian Pasdar) still in jail, Rebecca (Charisma Carpenter) spent the hour scheming with Sutton (Alexandra Chando) to win back the loves of their lives, while taking down their enemies in the process.
Sutton, of course, has her sights set on the grade-a man meat known as Ethan Whitehorse (Blair Redford). She tried faking an ankle sprain to get closer to him, and when that didn’t work, she resorted to plan B: honesty! She confessed that she’s still in love with him, and that she knows deep down — like, way deep down — he still loves her, too. Naturally, he rejected her,...

Thirteen years since Saving Private Ryan and six since his last ‘serious’ work in Munich, Steven Spielberg pulls out all the stops for his newest Wwi epic War Horse. Based on the 1982 children’s novel by Michael Morpurgo that was recently adapted into a Tony Award-winning stage play earlier this year, the title deceives as far as explaining the true subject of the work. While we follow Joey the horse from birth to the savage conditions of the Great War, he is merely the lynchpin connecting us to the myriad of tales enveloping him. Eventually fighting for the British and the Germans, this horse becomes a miracle beast signifying hope for all. Seemingly invincible, compassionate to friends, and as magnificent as old Ted Narracott (Peter Mullan) imagined when buying him for thirty guineas, Joey’s experiences on the battlefield and beyond serve as a riveting return to form for the film’s auteur.

Speaking of (or not, I'm not saying either way), check out today's Briefs Guy!The faboo Jami Gertz has been cast in that ABC pilot about a "family that moves into a highly desirable gated community in New Jersey only to discover that the entire neighborhood is made up of aliens disguised as humans." TV Line has a blind item about a "hit freshman...

After three episodes, The X Factor is turning out to be a little like that polarizing audition from Tiah Tolliver, the 19-year-old beauty with the cascade of bangs and tidal-wave pompadour who closed Wednesday night’s two-hour litany of tryouts from Chicago and Seattle.
In one corner, we had judge Paula Abdul crinkling her nose over Tiah’s sudden and not-exactly-welcome key changes during a cover of Shontelle’s “Impossible,” and in the other, we had Simon Cowell insisting that Tiah had true superstar potential. “I’ve got a real feeling about this girl!” he pleaded, worried Tiah’s X Factor...

Have a couple hot nights on the town when the Cinekink Film Festival shakes its groove thing on March 1-6 in NYC. With the exception of the opening and closing night galas, the fest will turn the venerable Anthology Film Archives into a red light district with sexy feature films, documentaries, shorts and more.
The feature films screening tell wicked tales of telepathic peeping toms (Sexual Radar), swingers (Open Invitation) and naive hedonists (Caged). Meanwhile, the documentaries chronicle the history of gay leather (Kink Crusaders) and porn addiction (Run, Run, It’s Him). And there’s all kinds of naughty offerings hidden in the short film collections.
While Cinekink is traditionally all about sex, the main film Bad Lit wants to recommend is all about not getting in: Robert G. Putka‘s hilarious and discomforting Hooka Face and the Virgin Boy. The fest also includes new short films by Bad...
