In 1995, one year after the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy was enacted to protect closeted LGBTQ+ members of the U.S. military while excluding those who were out, Glenn Close and Judy Davis both won Emmys for playing Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer and her partner, Diane Divelbess, in “Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story.” This gave them the joint distinction of being the first actresses ever honored by the TV academy for LGBTQ+ character portrayals.
Nearly three decades later, Close remains the only such victor in the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress category. To find out which other eight women have earned nominations here for embodying LGBTQ+ characters, take a look through our photo gallery.
Although the corresponding male list is twice as long, this one still includes an even mix of lesbian, bisexual, and transgender characters that provide insight into over a century of the community’s history.

While making Do Revenge for Netflix, Camila Mendes felt like she was working on a theatrical, not a made-for-tv movie.

“There was more of a priority in the art of it, you know?” says Mendes (Riverdale) of the campy film that follows a pair of high schoolers who go after each other’s bullies. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and co-starring Stranger Things‘ Maya Hawke and Game of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner, the clever film penned by Robinson and Celeste Ballard had a “bigger budget than a lot of high school movies do.”
“There was more priority being placed in putting together these beautiful cinematic shots and making the costumes look really vibrant and character specific,” recalls Mendes. “I do think this movie is something that could have been in a theater, and...

Sylvester Stallone’s first regular television series role on the Paramount+ mob-themed series “Tulsa King” has put him in this year’s Emmy race. And while it’s not rare for a performer primarily or solely identified with features to find Emmy success, it’s significantly less common for them to generate it in a comedy category, where Stallone presently finds himself in 10th place among series leads in the Gold Derby combined count.
A longshot? Absolutely. But there is certainly plenty of precedent for movie stars shuttling to TV and earning Emmy recognition. Here are 10 examples:
Al Pacino – He won lead actor in a miniseries or movie statues for his portrayal of Roy Cohn in “Angels in America” (2004) and Dr. Jack Kevorkian in “You Don’t Know Jack” (2010). That’s double his number of Oscar wins, Pacino’s lone triumph being for “Scent of a Woman” in 1993. Meryl Streep – Streep...

Since her work on “The Dropout” has already brought her an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Critics Choice Award, Amanda Seyfried only needs a Screen Actors Guild Award in order to complete her major industry TV prize sweep. Based on the fact that no woman who has been nominated for all four awards and won the Emmy first has failed to win the other three, her path to victory is arguably clearer than that of any other 2023 SAG Award contender. If she is successful on this final bid, she will be the 12th woman to win both a lead Emmy and a SAG Award for the same TV movie or miniseries performance.

After many votes have been tabulated, Barbra Streisand and Meryl Streep are your top two choices to receive the 2022 Screen Actors Guild life achievement award. In our recent poll featuring 10 actress possibilities, these two Oscar winners were far and above the top vote-getters and finished in a very tight race. See full vote percentages below.
The SAG-AFTRA committee will most likely be announcing their life achievement award recipient in the near future for the ceremony next February. This event skipped the annual tradition in 2021 for a pre-taped, shortened ceremony. It was three men in a row for the most recent ceremonies, so our guess is that it will be a woman this time. All 10 of these actresses in the poll had two things in common with typical decisions by this committee: at least 65 years old with a history of charitable and/or humanitarian works.

Exclusive: Virgil Films has acquired worldwide rights to Surviving The Silence, a documentary revealing a long-hidden story from the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” era.
Directed and produced by Cindy L. Abel, the film revisits the case of Army hero Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer, who was expelled by Col. Patsy Thompson because she was a lesbian. What was previously unknown is that Thompson was also a lesbian. The way she handled the military trial, however, led to Cammermeyer’s re-instatement via federal court and eventual change in military policy.
The “don’t ask don’t tell” policy was instituted by the Clinton Administration in 1994. While it was intended as a progressive measure, the updated rule prohibited gay, bisexual or transgender people from speaking about or disclosing same-sex relationships during their time in the armed services. From the opening night film through the Orpheus Awards, which will close the event on June 9, women are front and center at the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival, taking place this week at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
Fest opener “Meltem,” a feature directed by Greek-French helmer Basile Doganis, examines the refugee crisis through the eyes of a young woman played by Daphne Patakia (pictured above). And opening night short “Patision Avenue,” directed by Thanasis Neofotistos, looks at a day in the life of a young mother in Athens.
Another feature screening at the fest, “Pause,” helmed by Cypriot director Tonia Mishiali, explores the margins of femininity as the heroine defies expectations and stereotypes.
“I Am Mackenzie,” an American short by Artemis Anastasiadou, tells the coming-of-age story of a teenage girl growing up in rural Texas. And short “37 Days,” from Nikoleta Leousi, tackles themes of pregnancy and the right to work.

If Glenn Close wins at the Oscars as we are predicting for her leading role in “The Wife,” she’ll become the 25th performer to pull off the Triple Crown of acting awards. She already has three Emmys and three Tonys. With this elusive Oscar, she’ll vault into a tie for first place with Maggie Smith for the most number of these awards at seven apiece.
Smith reaped her first bid for one of these prizes (an Oscar nomination) in 1966 and won the last of these three (an Emmy) in 2003 to complete the Triple Crown. That is a time span of 37 years. As Close first contended at the Tonys in 1980, it will have taken her just shy of four decades to run the Triple Crown.

For the fifth year in a row, the Triple Crown of Acting club might get a new member. Glenn Close (“The Wife”) would be the 25th performer to garner the most prestigious acting prizes for film, theater and TV if she does indeed win the Best Actress Oscar next month.
A six-time nominee, Close surged back to first place in our Oscar predictions after her Golden Globe upset on Sunday. Close had started the season in first place, but was overtaken by both Lady Gaga (“A Star Is Born”) and Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) in recent months. Her poignant, tearful Globe speech not only contained a powerful, topical message, encouraging women to put themselves first, but underscored her longevity and legendary status in the business (45 years!), which might be enough to get her that overdue Oscar.

We are recognizing Glenn Close for her excellent performances. Our Hollywood Film Tributes recognize films and talent for their excellence in the art of filmmaking. A six-time Academy Award nominee, Glenn Close made her feature film debut in George Roy Hill’s The World According to Garp, earning her awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review as well as her first Academy Award nomination. She was subsequently Oscar-nominated for The Big Chill, The Natural, Fatal Attraction and Stephen Frears’ Dangerous Liaisons (for which she was also a BAFTA Award nominee). Close stars in the title role of Jane Anderson’s film adaptation of Meg Wolitzer’s bestselling novel, The Wife, with Jonathan Pryce and Christian Slater for Swedish director Björn Runge, which opened earlier this year. Craig Zadan, the prolific producer known for his touch with stage, TV and film musicals including NBC’s recent return to live event productions and three Academy Awards telecasts, has died. He was 69.
Zadan died Monday night at his Hollywood Hills home of complications from a recent shoulder replacement surgery, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt announced Tuesday.
“We are stunned that the man behind so many incredible film, theater, and television productions — several of them joyous musicals — was taken away so suddenly,” Greenblatt said. “Craig’s distinguished career as a passionate and consummate producer is eclipsed only by his genuine love for the thousands of actors, directors, writers, musicians, designers, and technicians he worked with over the years. His absence will be felt in our hearts and throughout our business.”

“How could you not want to tackle that?” says producer Neil Meron about taking on the story of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, in the Lifetime original movie “Flint.” The film follows a “group of women who actually were the whistle-blowers” who helped expose the dangerously high levels of lead in the drinking water due to government cost-cutting. “They were soccer moms or just people with families that were economically challenged, and then having this put upon them inspired them to action.” Watch Meron discuss “Flint” in our exclusive video interview above.
Meron and his producing partner Craig Zadan have “taken on some social and political issues” in their work in the past. That includes “Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story” (1995) about a lesbian’s legal fight after being discharged from the military, and the controversial “The Reagans” (2003), about Ronald Reagan‘s family and presidency. “We do like...

The busy producing team of Neil Meron and Craig Zadan got a little busier recently when the duo, who head up Storyline Entertainment, were tapped to produce a little show called the Academy Awards next spring and the recent announcement that Seth MacFarlane would host created a stir in the Hollywood community.
But creating a stir is what Meron and Zadan do best, with high profile projects in film (Chicago), television (Smash and Bette Midler’s Gypsy) and theater (How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying). While riding the subway the other day, I was seated next to a young girl, maybe 8 or 9 years old, and her father. "Twenty-eighth Street is next. And then 23rd. And then 18th," she told me. Apparently, even she could tell I wasn't a New Yorker.
Then, as the train came to a stop at the station (sure enough, 28th Street), her attention was drawn to a gay couple who boarded holding hands. She quieted.
"Do those men love each other?" she asked her father.
This could be interesting.
As I held my breath waiting for him to answer, I saw her eyes widen as she excitedly blurted out, "Like on Glee?!'"
He laughed. "Yes, like on Glee." She took another look at the pair and smiled.

One of my favorite films of last year was an indie called Trigger, which followed two women who were together in a band during the 1990s reunited for a one-night only show present day. The film starred Molly Parker and Tracy Wright, the latter who tragically died shortly after filming. Parker attended the NBC TCA night in Los Angeles to speak about her new role in The Firm and I was able to ask about her experience working on Trigger, in which Wright's character was a lesbian and Parker's was a little more vague.
Parker described their characters' relationship as "not sexual and not romantic but really full of love. To me, that movie is just all about the way we love the people we first fall in love with. As girls, if they had been good they would have been so happy to be with each other. And they weren't,...

After almost 20 years, we are finally getting rid of the discriminatory policy of Don't Ask, Don't Tell within our nation's military. The rule that allowed for gay witch hunts is no longer as of today — and that is cause for celebration.
In the last two decades, there have been a lot of stories told about service members who were found out or who came out, only to be dishonorably discharged. Today we should think about them and about those who are finally able to serve in the military as the openly gay people they are.
And while many of the cases we hear about seem to focus on men, it's lesbians that were actually affected the most by Dadt. According to AOL, "lesbians accounted for 48 percent of 195 discharges under the don't-ask, don't-tell policy, even though women make up only 14 percent of the [army]. More than half, 51 percent, of those [in the air force] discharged were women,...

A Marine Story
Director: Ned Farr
Written by Ned Far
USA, 2010
Like Kimberly Peirce’s Stop-Loss, A Marine Story casts a highly critical eye over the Us Military’s treatment of its own personnel during the Iraq War. Peirce’s film was about the practice of shipping soldiers back to Iraq against their will — forcing many to live as fugitives. Here the equally controversial “Don’t ask don’t tell” policy has the perverse effect of kicking a decorated officer out of the Marines on the grounds of her sexuality. Well, no one ever said war was fair.
Writer/director Ned Farr’s film stars his wife Dreya Weber as Major Alexandra Everett, who returns to her home town in California in the summer of 2008. Despite her long blonde hair, Alex has the tattoo, the muscle tone and the steely look of a woman who means business. There’s also a wedding ring,...

Welcome to Back Stage's exclusive guide to this year's Screen Actors Guild Award nominees in film and television. Here, you will find a write-up of every nominee for SAG Awards in 2011. Be sure to look for continued coverage of the awards race at our awards blog, "Behind the Scenes." The 17th annual SAG Awards will be broadcast live Sunday, January 30, on TNT and TBS. Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Television Movie Or Miniseriesclaire Danes"Temple Grandin"Claire Danes so convincingly becomes Temple Grandin that it's almost inconceivable that the actor was the face of 1990s teen angst as Angela Chase in the short-lived but beloved "My So-Called Life." Danes is so brave and daring in her performance as the woman who changed the face of autism—singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" at her college graduation—it's no wonder the real-life Grandin felt proud to be affiliated with the HBO project,...

Glenn Close is offended when finding out that her image is misused in a raunchy video made by Navy Captain Owen Honors who was eventually relieved of his service on aircraft carrier USS Enterprise on Tuesday, January 4. She released a statement to clarify that it used to be a "seemingly innocent request".
The video made by Honors was shot aboard the carrier in 2006 and 2007 while he was second in command. It contains several attempts at humor but it includes as well homophobic remarks, simulated masturbation and partial nudity. Close appears at the very end of the video with a stuffed parrot after a shot of condoms and lube.
"I am distraught that my image has been used to perpetuate something that I abhor," Close told Washington Post via publicist Catherine Olim. "The cynical, unauthorized use of my image in this video is deeply offensive and insulting, and was the result...

When ABC Family canceled lesbian-written, fat-positive show Huge earlier this week, it appeared that they might be getting a little less queer. But now Deadline.com is reporting that the network is working on a TV movie about Constance McMillen, who famously was not only disallowed from her high school prom for wanting to bring her girlfriend, but saw the entire dance canceled just to keep her away.
Deadline writes:
The project, in early stages of development, hails from Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Sony Pictures TV who have optioned the rights to McMillen’s story. Ghost Whisperer creator/executive producer John Gray will write the script and is expected to direct.
They also note that the producers are openly gay and have won four GLAAD Media Awards for Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story, What Makes A Family and Wedding Wars.

I've known prodigious producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron since 1995 when I covered their important gays-in-the-military film, Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story. This is a team that puts thought into entertainment -- letting the story reflect back to America what might otherwise scream "social issue." Remember their casting of African American singer Brandy as "Cinderella" in that TV homage to hope and diversity? Or how about the racism at the core of their Adam Shankman-directed "Hairspray" about a chunky white girl with a black boyfriend integrating an American Bandstand-type TV show -- with John Travolta in drag playing the iconic character made famous by Divine in the original John Waters screenplay? Now I know the team is devoted to the musical (Chicago, Annie) so I'm sure their latest venture Promises, Promises with Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth -- set...

Patricia Arquette, 'Medium'Howard Hawks once said that a movie is "three great scenes and no bad ones." A good performance is a similar thing: Nail the important scenes and don't bomb the rest. A great performance, however, is found in the details.Allison Dubois is a wife and mother, as well as a psychic working with the Phoenix district attorney's office. Patricia Arquette plays not only these roles but also the spaces in between. Allison must remain confident in and dedicated to her ability, so as to withstand the skeptics, yet she also has doubts about the wisdom of her role. As a woman raising three daughters, she knows the immense danger she puts her family in and yet feels a calling to help that cannot be ignored. We may not all commune with ghosts and solve mysteries, but Allison's dilemmas are recognizable to anyone.Procedurals will...
