The dojo set was constructed in a space formerly occupied by a nightclub. In the manager's office, converted into the on-site production office, Polaroids of beaten bar patrons were tacked on the wall next to the mounted chains used to hold them.
The shooting of the opening party scene was shut down when neighbors complained about the lights and it was realized the permits for shooting in Phoenix did not cover the town of Paradise Valley (where the house was located).
The film was shot at Paradise Valley High School when the school was closed because of freeway construction interference. Another school was built nearby for the students who attended Paradise Valley High School. The school ended up reopening and the other school was named North Canyon.
The working title for this film during production was "Full Contact".
The retro blue and white sneakers worn by Billy (Billy Blanks) are none other than the Reebok D time pump. At the time of this film's release (1993), these were a popular sneaker and a signature item for NBA player Dee Brown.
